A Summer Comeback

7:21PM

Well folks, I can’t deny it, another stretch of warm weather is coming. This one will not be as intense and long lasting as what we saw in March, but the peak day will probably be classified as a hot day, and the bad news is that it will coincide with the running of the Boston Marathon. This will remind many of 2004, and for those who were around for it, 1976 though not as hot as then when it reached the middle 90s in Boston! High pressure will be in general control for the next 3 days, building off to the south of New England. Temperatures will warm during this time. An interesting note is that some locations may see a nearly 40-degree diurnal on  Saturday (the spread between the low temperatures and the high temperature), as some valley locations that dip to the lower 30s in the early  morning recover to near 70 in the afternoon! A couple disturbances (Saturday night & Sunday night) will bring threats of showers and maybe even an isolated thunderstorm, but otherwise dry weather will rule. The scattered showers/storms of Thursday were not enough to provide widespread relief for drought conditions and high fire danger, so we will see this continue. A frontal system will remain to the north of the region until Tuesday, at which time a cool-down ans turn to more unsettled weather will begin.

Forecast for eastern MA,  southern NH, and RI…

TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Low from 32 in the valleys to near 40 along the coast. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. High 65-70. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Increasing clouds. Scattered showers and a slight chance of a thunderstorm after midnight. Low 50-55. Wind W 5-15 MPH shifting to SW.

SUNDAY: Partly sunny. High 75-80. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Isolated showers and a slight chance of a thunderstorm. Low 60-65. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY – PATRIOTS DAY: Partly cloudy. High 85-90. Wind SW 15-25 MPH.

TUESDAY: Variably cloudy. Low 60. High 74.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Low 50. High 64.

THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain. Low 45. High 57.

FRIDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of showers. Low 45. High 63.

Warmer. How Warm?

2:38AM

High pressure builds over New England with dry weather and a warming trend through Saturday. A disturbance will cross the region Sunday with a shower threat, though it will still be mild. The question then becomes, what happens with a front to the north versus high pressure to the south, as we get into Monday (Patriots Day / Boston Marathon day)? Yesterday, I was leaning toward a quicker frontal passage and a cooler solution. At the moment I’m leaning a little warmer. Beyond this, the warm air may try to hang on through Tuesday before a cool-down takes place during the middle of next week.

Forecast for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH…

SUNDAY: AM showers. Low 51. High 70.

MONDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 54. High 80.

TUESDAY: Chance of showers and thunderstorms. Low 57. High 74.

WEDNESDAY: Chance of showers. Low 51. High 64.

No Significant Rain In Sight

2:30AM

Broad low pressure will continue to control the weather in Southern New England through Thursday, before high pressure takes over for the end of the week.

The placement of the low pressure area, to the north, is keeping the region on the drier side, with no significant rain to lessen the high fire danger. With a warm-up expected to accompany the late week high pressure building in, fire danger may increase even further.

Forecast for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH…

THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. A slight chance of light rain showers. Daytime highs middle 50s to around 60. Overnight lows upper 30s to lower 40s. Wind NW-W averaging 10-15 MPH with higher gusts during the day, lighter during the night.

The Week Ahead

8:16PM

Upper level low pressure will be the main ruler in the weather for the coming 5 days. Variably cloudy skies will be the rule, cloudiest likely to be midweek when there is also the greatest shot of wet weather. Temperatures will not be all that warm, but should be sitting mostly around the seasonal normal, still feeling a bit cool compared to the very warm March weather we had here in southern New England.

By next weekend, early signs point to high pressure dominating, with fair and milder weather.

With no widespread soaking rain, fire danger will remain high throughout the week, with the possible exception of a brief period during the middle of the week.

Forecast for the week ahead for RI, eastern MA, and southern NH…

THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Chance of a few passing rain showers. Overnight lows 36-41. Daytime high 54-59. Wind NW-W 5-15 MPH at night, 10-20 MPH with higher gusts during the day.

THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain showers. Low 41. High 54.

FRIDAY: Partly cloudy and windy. Low 33. High 55.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 36. High 61.

SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 40. High 63.

Weekend Forecast Update

9:27AM

Here is  a quick update for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH. There are no big changes to the pattern that has been described in previous entries. A full discussion will be posted later Sunday.

THROUGH SUNDAY: Variably cloudy, sunnier intervals during both days. Highs 50-58. Lows generally in the 30s. Wind mostly N 10-15 MPH with some higher gusts at times.

MONDAY-THURSDAY: Variably cloudy with a daily chance of scattered rain showers. Lows generally upper 30s to middle 40s. Highs in the 50s, mildest Monday-Tuesday with more middle to upper 50s, coolest Wednesday-Thursday with mostly lower 50s expected.

FRIDAY: Partly cloudy and windy. Low 33. High 55.

More Dry, More Cool

8:26PM

High pressure dominates through Saturday. An ocean storm tracks northward just east of New England over the weekend then retrogrades back toward the area during Sunday. The thrust of this low will be north of the forecast area from late Sunday into next week. This pattern supports cool, mostly dry weather, so there will be some threat of showers starting Sunday into next week. Widespread significant rain is not expected. High fire danger will continue.

Forecast for eastern MA, southern NH, and RI…

TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear nights and mostly sunny to partly cloudy days. Lows in the 30s. Highs in the 50s. Wind mostly N 5-15 MPH, gusting 20-25 MPH at times.

SUNDAY: Increasing clouds. Low 47. High 59.

MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY: Variably cloudy with a daily risk of scattered showers. Lows in the 30s and highs in the 50s each day.

No Big Changes

10:24PM

Very Quick Forecast Update…

TUESDAY: Chance of showers. Low 43. High 54.

WEDNESDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 36. High 57.

Dry, Coolish

12:47AM

The overall pattern through late this week will be dry. A mild day today will be followed by cooler weather again as a couple cold fronts deliver some cooler air from Canada. In earlier posts, I’ve been talking about milder and dry weather through the coming weekend, including Easter Sunday, but I am starting to have some doubts about Sunday at this point. Though it is still several days away, there are signs that an ocean storm will develop and try to back in around that time, bringing at least clouds and cooler temperatures, and possibly some wet weather eventually. Check back for updates on this potential.

Updated forecast for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH…

Quiet Times

11:31PM

The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch for all but Cape Cod and the Islands for Tuesday. This could be upgraded to a Red Flag Warning for high fire danger, due to dry ground and brush, dry weather and very dry air, along with a gusty breeze. Use extreme caution with anything that could create a spark or small fire outdoors.

The weather will be rather quiet through the coming weekend as high pressure dominates, with one interruption coming in the form of a frontal system with lots of clouds Tuesday night into Wednesday. Temperatures will be held back from warming up significantly until probably Sunday, when it may break into the 60s. But it won’t be all that cold either, with most days in the 50s, which is not that bad for early April.

Updated forecast for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH…

OVERNIGHT: Clear. Low from the middle 20s inland valleys to middle 30s at the coast. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Sunny. High 53-58. Wind N 10-20 MPH.

SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 35. High 58.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 39. High 63.

MONDAY: Partly sunny. Low 35. High 54.

The Week Ahead

3:12AM

The upcoming week will be rather quiet across southeastern New England. Clouds will hang on in eastern areas for a while Monday morning as low pressure departs to the east. High pressure will be in control for much of the week, with the coolest weather early into mid week and the mildest toward week’s end. Only a slight interruption will take place Tuesday night as a moisture-starved frontal system whips across the region with some clouds.
