Yeah, Not Quite Perfect, But Better

8:29PM

SUMMARY…
Basically what was said in the last blog applies still  here in this update. Low pressure east of New England continues to send lobes of moisture, mainly in the form of cloudiness, southwestward and southward into southern New England. This continues through Friday which will be the day with the most extensive cloudiness at least through midday. Some drier air working on from the northeast may break up the clouds later in the day. We’re still looking at improvement during the weekend but there will be some lingering cloudiness around on Saturday due to chilly air aloft, and additional development of clouds on Sunday from a small disturbance coming in from the west. But overall, the weekend will be favorable with a trend toward warmer weather. It still looks like a more widespread southwest flow will warm most areas Monday with the exception of the South Coast where the wind is still off the water even from the southwest. With cool air not that far away in Canada we’ll likely see a boundary sink southward into the region during Tuesday and push a little further south on Wednesday of next week. If all goes well, a warmer push of air returns Thursday as we  make an attempt to get into a pattern that features milder to warmer weather more often than the cool stuff. Time will tell…

Back Spin

10:33PM

SUMMARY…
Broad low pressure hanging around east of New England will continue to spin spokes of moisture back into southeastern New England, preventing the significant improvement of Tuesday from continuing through midweek. And just when this system finally pulls away, another will come off the Middle Atlantic Coast. This one is expected to keep most of its precipitation offshore, but the circulation should be broad enough to create cool and cloudy weather Friday. A steady improvement is expected over the weekend as this system pulls away to the east like its predecessor. Expect lingering cloudiness Saturday which is still likely to be a cool day, and less cloudiness with milder air Sunday. Finally, a southwesterly flow should warm much of the region up by Monday, but as is usually the case at this time of year, there will be a significant modifying effect along the South Coast as a southwest wind is coming over water that it still quite cool. There may also be a fair amount of high cloudiness around on Monday. By Tuesday, there are signs of interaction of a front just to the north with a disturbance from the west, so though the forecast will be for mild air, I would not expected perfect weather.

Tuesday Forecast Update

7:28AM

SUMMARY…

Low pressure offshore nudges just far enough eastward for some clearing today but throws another batch of clouds back at southeastern New England Wednesday. Another system takes its place late in the week with more cloudiness but for now leaning toward the bulk of any rainfall staying offshore. We’ll see how fast this second system departs as it is the key to the weekend forecast, in terms of the level of improvement. Will lean optimistic for now but keep in mind that if that low doesn’t get out of here fast enough, it will impact the weather at least for the start of the weekend. If high pressure sets up just right we could have a legitimately warm day Monday with the exception of the South Coast, but that is many days away.

The Week Ahead

5:47PM

SUMMARY…

The cool pool of air over the northeastern US will sink slowly to the southeast and allow a surface low to move southwest then south in the waters east of New England, keeping the weather unsettled through Tuesday. Some improvement is expected by the middle of the week as this feature moves away to the east and a very weak ridge of high pressure tries to move in, but is replaced by low pressure to the south by late in the week with a threat of more unsettled weather. The uncertainty of Spring means it is not clear how quickly the weather will improve heading into next weekend, but for now will go for steady improvement.

Friday Forecast Update

7:09PM

SUMMARY…

Yes, it can snow in April. Yes, Boston saw a few flakes early Friday morning. Nothing highly unusual. That was the result of some energy moving through the region underneath an upper level low pressure area, which will remain parked across New England and southeastern Canada into the weekend before drifting southeast and capturing a surface low offshore and driving it westward late in the weekend and early next week. This will turn the current pattern of clouds and sun with pop up showers into a more general overcast with a better chance of some wet weather by later Sunday and Monday before partial improvement takes place heading toward the middle of next week. But another low pressure area may be nearby or just to the south by the end of next week with the threat of additional unsettled weather.

Thursday Forecast Update

4:28PM

SUMMARY…

A cool pool of air aloft associated with upper level low pressure will create daily clouds and a risk of a few rain and even mix/snow showers in a few locations through the weekend. Though most showers will be in the form of rain, the mix/snow would be possible with some of the activity lingering into the nighttime hours and occurring in higher elevations north and west of Boston. By the start of next week, the orientation of upper level low pressure may be such that a surface low can back up and bring a more solid overcast and risk of some wet weather into the region. By the middle of next week, the cool pool should shift further east but with southeastern New England still under its influence.

SOUTHEASTERN NEW ENGLAND FORECAST…

THROUGH EVENING: Variably cloudy. Isolated rain showers. Temperatures cooling into the 40s. Wind W 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy. Isolated rain showers. Highs upper 40s hills, 50-55 elsewhere. Wind W 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Isolated showers of rain/mix/snow mainly hilly areas west and north of Boston early. Lows in the 30s. Wind NW 5-15 MPH and gusty.

SATURDAY & SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Isolated rain showers. Highs in the 50s both days. Lows Saturday night 35-45.

MONDAY & TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain/drizzle. Lows around 40. Highs 45-55, coolest eastern coastal areas.

WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of rain showers. Lows 35-45. Highs 50-60.

Wednesday Forecast Update

12:41PM

SUMMARY…

One more mild afternoon ahead of a cold front. This front crosses southeastern New England this evening with showers and possible thunderstorms, then a cool air mass arrives as we return to a pattern of below normal temperatures during the coming days. Upper level low pressure will provide some instability with a few showers possible each day through the weekend. A surface low offshore may back up enough to bring more general overcast and possible wet weather early next week.
