  1. While I am not in favor of the U.S. withdrawing from WHO – there’s just too much to lose; WHO does a lot of good in the world – the organization did make an egregious mistake. Should not have accepted China’s version of events in late December through the middle of January.

The post below from Reddit is from January 2, 2020. It discusses a 23 year old Chinese man from Wuhan who’s been battling pneumonia for 22 days. He talks about his struggle with the novel coronavirus, as well as patients he’s seeing in the ward in the Wuhan hospital.

    1. They certainly were in error. I’m thinking that and other questionable steps should be and will be investigated once we have moved past this. Being a novel virus, we surely will have a lot to learn.

Trump cutting ties with WHO is both laughable and careless. It is his way of once again deflecting from the horrific errors he made and continues to make. WHO admitted to a mistake in late January IIRC…There is no excuse for the errors he has made since, the many times he has stated it will just go away…simply disappear.

It is ALWAYS the fault of someone else. Always.

      1. In all fairness, there is a lot of blame to go around, including the entire medical community early on. Not blaming the front line, just the “experts” who temporarily misguided the public in the early stages.

        1. Agree, Philip. And, I agree with you, Vicki.

WHO is in a difficult position. It is after all a U.N. agency. So, it must be politically neutral and diplomatic. However, as Maria Van Kerkhove (American scientist at WHO – brilliant person) said, “I believed in my gut from the first report on December 31st that there was human-to-human transmission.” That gut feeling should have been communicated to the world. It would have upset the Chinese, who were trying to hide the epidemic at the time.

          1. But Joshua….I knew. I dug out my list I’d made of things to do during SARS and started ordering meds in mid/late December. My first search on amazon for masks was January 3. They could not be found even then. I’m not psychic. I just listened. Every darned leader we have should have known then also

I didn’t think it would go this far. I thought it would end before I got past page 2 of my 4 step list just as the others had. When I got to page 4, I knew we were in deep trouble

We don’t need who or anyone to tell us what common sense dictates. And I can promise you I was not alone. I’ve heard many say the very same. So somewhere along the line the gut feeling was communicated. Too many just didn’t listen

  2. One thing the models have not accounted for, and will have greater impact than the cautious reopening we’ve seen, is the massive protests going on with tens of thousands of people in dozens of cities on an almost daily basis. I guarantee this will cause a spike in cases. In fact, I’m a little surprised the media isn’t talking about this. There is a lot of bandanna wearing, but people are within inches (if that) of one another.

  3. The 7-day moving average in new U.S. cases is ticking up slightly, with numbers of tests flat (in many states lower than last week!). Not thrilled to see this. California (Southern) is seeing significant growth.

  4. Joshua I was thinking the same thing you are with all these protests going on and people gathering in large groups and not social distancing there could be spikes in COVID19 cases in some areas. I hope we won’t see a spike.

    1. I wish the media would mention this. The media jumped all over the reopen folks for protesting, in part because there was no social or physical distancing. I’m critical of aspects of both sets of protests. Regarding the Lloyd protests, while I understand the anger and I’m okay with peaceful protests, violence and vandalism aren’t honoring Mr. Lloyd or appealing for justice in an appropriate way. Moreover, with no physical distancing going on the protests are going to have negative externalities in some of the communities most affected by injustice. Regarding the reopen folks, it’s okay to protest, but I was appalled to see the armed militia storming the Michigan capitol. I believe they also did so in North Carolina.

      1. The media has mentioned the danger of protests. And I am sure you all know that the violence is from groups such as white supremacists egging this on. The guard needs to move in and put a stop to it now.

I’m hoping everyone listened to Gov Tim Walz today.

        1. Watching coverage now on ABC News and it was just mentioned nine states have called for the national guard.

  5. Unfortunately were seeing another nights of these protest where there is violence and vandalism going on in several U.S. cities. It has been a horrible stretch for our country with COVID19 killing over 100,000 people and now the death of George Floyd and what were seeing with these protests.

  6. JJ. Are you still listening to ABC. I don’t know who Pierre Thomas is but wow his words need to be replayed and replayed

God Bless a voice of reason. Put yourself in the shoes of other from police to those who are discriminated against.

  7. It’s really bad tonight. Out of control. While a large number of protesters were peaceful, too many opportunists have resorted to violence and looting. It’s leaderless anarchy in some places around the country. Dr. King would not have condoned that. Furthermore, the fires, torching of cars, destruction of property, do nothing to heal the nation. They sow division. Granted, our president is a master at that too. But, we’re better than that. In the words of Michelle Obama “of they go low, we go high.” The moral high ground is where victory can be attained.

On top of all the misery, these protests are going to cause a significant spike in coronavirus cases, mostly among minorities who have suffered the injustices over the years. It’s not that the young protesters or opportunists are likely to die from it, it’s that they’ll be carriers and bring it into the community, to their parents and grandparents and others who are vulnerable.

As I said last night, I fear for our country. I really do. 2020 is America’s annus horribilis.
