DAYS 1-5 (MAY 30-JUNE 3)

It’s transition day! Today, a cold front crossing the region will bring an end to the early-season warm/muggy episode and introduce a much drier air mass from Canada, but it’s a slow process taking most of the day today to occur. With the front not completely across the region yet, we still run the risk of a few showers and even a brief thunderstorm popping up through about early afternoon. Most areas will likely escape the activity, but if a line should get itself together the coverage, while brief, could be more widespread for a portion of southeastern New England. But odds are against this, so if you have outdoor plans, go about them and just keep an eye on the sky. Tonight, a secondary trough will push through the region from west to east with some clouds at times, but most shower activity that fires up during the day in NY State should not make it much further than the Berkshires or Connecticut River Valley before dissipating. What you will definitely feel tonight is cooler and much drier air. And this dry air will be in place for Sunday, along with a gusty breeze, sunshine and passing clouds, as high pressure moves across the Great Lakes and toward the Ohio Valley. The position of this high and the upper level air flow will allow a disturbance coming out of southern Canada to cross New England on Monday, introducing more cloudiness, a possible passing shower or two, and even cooler air. But this fast-flow pattern means quick changes and by Tuesday we’ll already be seeing the next disturbance approach by later in the day, after a mainly dry day, clouds return and a risk of some insignificant wet weather at night, putting us into a warmer and slightly more humid sector of air for Wednesday with mainly dry weather – just a minimal shower threat.

TODAY: Variably cloudy. Slight risk of passing showers and possibly a brief thunderstorm favoring areas west of I-95 morning and I-95 eastward midday to early afternoon. Decreasing humidity. Highs 76-83, cooler South Coast especially Cape Cod. Wind SW shifting to NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 53-60. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Highs 68-75. Wind NW 10-20 MPH.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 50-57. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Variably cloudy. Risk of showers. Highs 61-68. Wind N 10-20 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Clearing. Lows 45-52. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Sunshine then increasing clouds late. Highs 63-70. Wind variable 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Risk of rain. Lows 53-60. Wind S up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Slight risk of a shower. More humid. Highs 72-77. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (JUNE 4-8)

A passing shower otherwise mainly dry and cooler June 4 as a cold front moves through. Warm front approaches and brings clouds back with a rain threat at some point June 5. Warm sector June 6, warmer and more humid, risk of a shower or thunderstorm. Frontal boundary hanging in the area makes for a tricky temperature forecast and allows for at least lots of cloudiness and perhaps some scattered rainfall in the June 7-8 time frame.

DAYS 11-15 (JUNE 9-13)

Leaning toward slightly cooler than average and drier than average during this 5-day period.

    1. Thank you, TK. For your forecast and for the song I now have playing in the background while I type. I have always been a fan of Chuck Mangione.

      1. His obvious most popular song is “Feels So Good”. There was an edited 4 minute version for radio back in the late 1970s, but I prefer the full version, over 9 minutes. 🙂 Who says you can’t get too much of a good thing! 😀

  1. Thank you, TK.

Thank you for the upbeat instrumental.

And now for something completely different, as John Cleese used to say. A live version of “Machine Gun” from an epic concert 50 years ago by a short-lived but legendary group called The Band of Gypsies (led by Jimi Hendrix). For those who don’t own the one and only album produced by the band, I highly recommend it. The talent on display that evening (New Year’s Eve 1969) at the Filmore in NYC was electrifying. Jimi’s intro to the song reminds us a bit of how history repeats itself in certain ways. His electric guitar imitation of an M16 is not only classic, it is haunting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2cjMjJaEzA

    1. Excellent stuff. I will add that to my playlist today. Was just talking about him at work the other day. Apparently when Dylan heard his version of “All Along The Watchtower” he said something to the effect of “That’s the version. I don’t need t play that song myself any longer…” … XTC has a good cover of that tune.

  2. Want some dry air? The dew point should be between 28 and 36 across the region for about 24 to 30 hours from midday Sunday to sometime Monday afternoon.

If, for some reason, Sunday night were clear, calm, and the dark was about 4 or 5 hours longer than it is at this time of year, some areas would experience a hard freeze.

      1. Oh there is no threat of damage at all. We’d need another 4-5 hours of darkness which we won’t have, simply because it’s the time of year that it is. Everything would be ok outside now.

          1. No threat of frost either. Air too dry, temps too high. Hope for a good growing season. A lot of watering is going to be needed this year!

          2. Good to know. They are up to just under 2 hours hardening. We have a bit more to go and then in the ground they go.

            1. Best of luck! I always think of my dad and how much work he put into his gardening efforts. I am no gardener so his old garden is now grown over with grass and just becoming part of the lawn, but his compost pile pit surrounded by blocks & a fence and hidden from the street by a side garden of flowers, small bushes, and a bird bath, is still there. 🙂

            2. Thank you. What wonderful memories. Mac and I had a garden when first married. But not elaborate. My oldest has had one for Seven or so years….complete with a sink inside of it. It’s nice when your husband has a plumbing company.

She doubled hers this year and is guiding us. My SIL here built a very nice garden and last bed was completed yesterday and filled with dirt. He is now adding an outdoor shower ……not for the plants 🙂 🙂 🙂

  3. Thanks TK !

A few scattered cumulus, dp around 60F, watching to see if one of these clouds grows into a quick shower in Plymouth.

    1. Thanks SAK!

Redesign phase 1 of WHW begins Monday.

From having talked to you already about some of what’s in this blog post you did, I urge everybody here to give this a thorough read!

        1. I just hope your “redesign” isn’t too fancy with a lot of bells & whistles, so to speak. I like this same format as I’m able to get into it quickly and read or post. I remember the Todd Gross site (I forget the specific name of it) took forever to load up. Even the current WBZ site has its issues somewhat.

          1. We had a lot of trouble with Todd’s site. It wasn’t the site but something to do with hosting it on BZs platform. I can’t recall exactly since it has been too many years. That won’t happen here since it is a different animal.

  4. Keeping a close eye on the weather for 2 events…

    1) SpaceX launch. If they don’t go today, they will get it in tomorrow. There are isolated showers in the region and a slight risk of thunderstorms too close for launch today. Tomorrow, they should be threat-free.

    2) A very good pass of the ISS tonight. Monitoring the trough to the west to see how many clouds may be in the sky to potentially inhibit viewing this.

      1. Now we have two great ISS passes (tonight & tomorrow night). Tonight’s is iffy for sky condition but is a pass directly overhead.
Tomorrow’s is perfect for sky, a little lower but still relatively high at about 54 degrees elevation in the NE sky, but will be a pass of the capsule & ISS docked. 🙂

  5. Logan dp = 50

In spite of the nice dp, it definitely feels hotter today than it did yesterday with the high humidity. Maybe it’s just me? or some meteorological explanation?

    1. I’m going to sample the different layouts. It won’t change the ability of the site to load or the ability to read the information on it. I tried this once before but was met with some negativity so I canned the idea. But I’ve been running this blog for 10 years on WP with all kinds of options that I have restricted myself from using, and I feel it’s time to start exploring them. Actually, it was time a long time ago!

      1. Explore away. Your site and we will support whatever you choose. Have fun with it. I’m looking forward to what you come up with

        1. There are about 8 existing themes added to my site. They have offered me a new one every year since I started the blog. One of them is broken and one other is missing, so I think we have 8 total besides the current version, which is called “2010” (how original).

I have previewed all of them and there are a couple I REALLY like a lot, but I am going to get everybody’s opinions before I decide which one (or more than 1) I use going forward.

  6. We have tons of baby dragonflies. Far too many to count and the little critters won’t stay still log enough to be counted anyway 😉

  7. With all this violence and pandemic stuff going on, it was nice to see science get at least a couple of hours of attention 🙂 Family and I were in the same living room that my dad watched the moon landings. I have to be honest, seeing Astronauts being launched off of US soil has a good feeling to it. Now for NASA to get its act together and get on those moon and mar’s projects which is why they privatize/partner with spacex for these.
