October Dresses Up As January For A Halloween Party

8:04PM

Much of what is in the last post still holds. Some of the uncertainties spoken about are starting to work themselves out. Among these, earlier mixing and changing in some areas putting down a base of snow in areas more immediately in Metro Boston. This causes a very slight up-tweak in snow amounts there, and also in the hills to the west, where intensity was maintained longer earlier in the storm, with several inches of snow already occurring in some locations from the hills of Worcester County westward.

The most significant aspects of this storm will be power outages caused by a combination of heavy, wet snow and strong wind gusts.

Updated Boston Area Forecast…

TONIGHT: Snow still mixed with rain at times coast, eventually all snow. Snow elsewhere. Thunder possible. Accumulations of snow from an inch or two immediate coast building to around 4 inches 95 belt, around 7 inches 495 belt, and 8-12 inches in many areas outside 495 except slightly less in valleys and a few spotty higher amounts in some higher elevations. Low 31-36. Wind NE-N 15-25 MPH with gusts around 30 MPH inland, 25-35 MPH with gusts around 45 MPH closer to the coast.

SUNDAY: Snow ending early. Clearing from southwest to northeast. High 42-47. Wind N-NW 15-35 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH early, diminishing to 10-20 MPH with gusts to 30 MPH by noon and beyond.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Clear. Low 25-30. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. High 50-55. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT – HALLOWEEN: Partly cloudy. Evening temperature cooling through the 40s. Overnight low 35-40. Wind W under 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Partly sunny. High 53-58. Wind variable 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 33. High 55.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 38. High 59.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy. Low 38. High 53.

SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 33. High 51.

  1. TK two people from the BZ blogs are asking about joining the blog? Coastal can get an email from them and we can confirm them?

      1. Yes.

What are there handles and I need a question and answer to ask them to verify.

        Trolls are everywhere.

    1. Good luck, Vicki. Hope your power comes on soon. Wonder if Sudbury will lose power soon. Lights are still flickering at times.

        1. Vicki. Glad to see you’re having fun. I’m like a dog with my paws up on the window sill and my tongue out begging to go out and play in it. LOL. We are very sick and I love it:)

  2. The wind is very strong down here, gusting over 30.

I assume that heavy band of snow from NH into western Mass is what will slowly pivot into eastern areas during the very early morning hours for an hour or so and will contain some howling N/NW winds.

Thanks for the update TK !

  3. The coastal areas the wind is the big deal with this storm system and no surprise the high wind warning is up.

  4. Stay safe everyone! Couple inches in andover, was out a few minutes ago moderate snow, could hear branches coming down. Lots of pines. Power flickering one outage for a minute or so. Candles and flashlights ready! Wind seems to be picking up.
    Tja

  5. It is upon us now. The rain/snow line is crashing toward the coast. Many locales have already changed over to snow a few hours (and in some cases, several) earlier than predicted by the models. Evaporational and dynamic cooling with loss of day time heating as I have pointed out since yesterday are winning over the marine influence. Expect a solid 3-6 inches from Boston to the I95 corridor with more to the north and west with a foot plus central ma and southwestern NH. I actually think I was too prudent with plymouth county as I was only calling for an inch down there but even there I expect a couple/few slushy inches on the back side of this storm. 1.5 million people are now without power through the northeast and these numbers are climbing. Make it a very safe night folks and hang in there. The snow storm has really only commenced. Enjoy!

  6. Temp went up to 36 in Marblehead due to the lighter intensity of precip that TK pointed out earlier. I hope to get in the snow sometime just after midnight.

  7. I’ve been watching the blog all day – so thrilled this is all weather and no drivel here!!
Dedham has finally turned to all snow, temp 34 degrees, snow starting to stick to grassy surfaces. A friend in Foxboro is reporting power outages and Pete Bouchard just upped his totals – 4-8 inches for the metro area…..
Love watching a storm unfold. Safe night all!

  8. It’s been snowing in Worcester since just before 2pm. I’m in Holden for a Halloween party, and we’re all planning on staying the night because the roads are nearly impassable. Still have power but the trees are hanging very low and close to the powerlines…

  9. i really want to stay up and see how that band develops over us that’s crushing the berks now. i can’t wait to get amounts from there and the litchfield hills.

  10. I think places in the Litchfield Hills and Berksheire could come in at a foot or a little bit more than that.

    1. I feel that it’s possible that someone in the higher elevations of those locales could come in with close to 20″, a four on the snow index!

  11. Forward progress of the rain/snow line has slowed down over the past one hour. Seems to be hung up just east of the I-95 corridor (that wild card zone). Places like Attleboro, foxboro, norwood, dedham, newton and up and down 95 points west are all snow now. East of this line, the warm marine layer is putting up a good fight against dynamic cooling. Eventually over the next couple of hours, cooling will prevail as the low bombs out, and even places along the immediate coastline will soon experience heavy wet snow to the tune of a few inches except for the cape and islands. Way more just a few miles west of 128. It’s only going to get uglier out there.

    1. I really enjoy reading your updates – do you really think our area (Dedham/Stoughton) will reach 4-8 inches. We have no accumulation here.

      1. Kev,
If I had to put a number on it, I’d say that Stoughton will come up with totals closer to the 3 inches while Dedham could top of closer to 5. I think 6+ for these areas is stretching it. The marine layer is trying to pull out all the stops against this push of dynamic cooling. The latest radar trends are trying to slow down the forward progression of the rain/snow line but with time, snow prevails. Yet, I do not think it will result in more than 3-5 inches for Stoughton/Dedham respectively. It wouldn’t surprise me however if someone tops off around 6 inches in this corridor when all is set and done but look for those amounts within the I-95 belt to be in the newton/framingham area. Hope that helps and is just my guess:)

  12. Sounds like gunshots in woods behind our house because so many limbs are breaking. I am afraid what damage more snow will cause Have to stand on porch for service so can’t post much. Please be careful. I’m hearing explosions from transformers as I post

    1. i know that sound vicki…lost 40 trees in my yard alone in the ice storm and power was out for 11 days. took the national guard and a front end loader to open up our dead end street three days after the storm just so we could get out.

  13. i’m tired too coastal but my wife just poured me a drink which perked me right up.

I’m going to try and stick it out to see how that band works out for us.

  14. Wow. Even my inflated numbers that I have been forecasting since yesterday may be underdone. You will see what I mean tomorrow morning when you wake up. Goodnight everyone!

    1. I just don’t see 6+ in Boston I am sorry. Still raining here in hyannis, sideways. the wind has just been huge here. I am expecting to wake to the same with no snow.

  15. Still raining here in Hingham. Winds are really picking up and temps are hovering around 37. Should be an interesting night.

  16. Power went out in Holden around 10:30 but came back a half hour later. Won’t be surprised if it goes out again. It is so beautiful outside with all this snow frosting the trees! Dangerous, but gorgeous.

    1. I’m in west Woburn at a friend’s house, and there are woods behind her house and we just heard a tree fall in there. It was eerie.

  17. Power out in andover since 9. Very nasty out there. Listening to the trees crack. Looks like a long ways to go…

  18. I thought I heard over the radio that there have been 3 deaths so far due to the storm…I hope I heard wrong. 🙁

Also, some good news…the 14-day CPC outlook has well above normal temps for most of the CONUS! I guess this means that the regime change will not be arriving anytime soon?

  19. Strangest snow I have ever seen in Cambridge. I was convinced it was rain until it hit the ground as a white blot.

Wouldn’t be surprised of it was all gone by the time I wake up tomorrow.

    Thanks, bloggers!

  20. According to Harvey, the “accumulating” snow in Boston should last until 6:00 am and snow flakes ending completely by 8:00 am.

  21. So far, all the amounts are verifying nicely, with the exception of the top end amounts in the higher elevations. They are coming in higher than forecast. But we knew there would be surprises. I’m sitting at just under 4 inches in Woburn as of 2:00AM. The dry slot did impact snow amounts significantly.

  22. A few wet snow flakes mixing in as the precip is about to end. 🙂

Lost power for a couple hours in the middle of the night. That initial push of N/NW winds were far worse than what Irene brought. The local nearby airport shows nothing over 40, which surprised me. See the Cape is gusting to 50 and 60. Looking forward to a ride up to the seawall upon first light to see what happened with that 2am tide. I cant imagine how tall some of the waves must have been.

  23. Reporting 11.4 inches at Worcester. Crazy other amounts in certain areas.

Moderate snow by the 55F ocean in late October, unreal. Collecting a bit on the cars.

I’m so glad my Logan total for the season is 27 inches. Probably already down a couple inches already. 🙂 🙁

  24. I figure this kind of snowfall can only mean a run at record high temps is due sometime within the next 2 to 3 weeks. Long range GFS trends towards central and western Canada building cold air. Maybe a general pattern of trof in the west or central USA and ridge in the east ?

Hope not too many of the bloggers are without power. Watching ch’s 4 and 5. Seeing live reports from Worcester, Framingham and Natick. The snow looks unbelievable, but they are stressing how much tree damage there is.

  25. We got 2.7 inches Here N.Attleboro, not much on main roads but back roads are a little slushy, it’s football day, Football is #1 no matter what time of year, quick note for persons that don’t want to shovel just wait till this afternoon most will be melted by end of today

  26. Tom, I’m just a few miles west of you and we have a good coating where the snow has stuck. Roads are slushy with some small branches down due to the wind. I look forward to the sunrising to take some pictures before it all melts by noon. Does anyone know how much Boston/ Dorchester received?
    Good luck to all!

    1. Coastal, I’m thinking of taking a quick ride on Rte. 139 west towards Pembroke to see the snow before it melts…..Dont know how much snow the Boston area got.

      1. Good Idea. If there is now snow at 139/53 intersection I would simply go west on rte 14 or on Broadway a bit to see it.

        1. We saw some snow. 🙂 Hit a dusting before getting to Rte. 3 and went a bit further west to see the good coating you mentioned above.

  27. Stilll no word as to what Logan got for snow yesterday. I have a feeling that if they did break the record (1.1″ = 2005) it was done only by “tenths” of inches. It is probably more difficult to measure slush than straight snow.

I do know one thing…Vicki, you got 3.5 inches! 🙂

  28. Morning. No pwr here still. Heard cracking in woods behind house all night. Our forsythia are flattened. Neighbor has tree on his car. Reminds me of late march 1984 maybe 28th when all I could hear was breaking branches. Sky was lighting up with transformers blowing thru nite. Hope you all are safe

    1. Vicki, sorry about your power loss. I hope you get it back certainly by day’s end. It will probably be hard to “enjoy” that 3.5″ you have on the ground.

You stay safe as well today! 🙂

  29. Big time snows where they usually get it. The highest total was 27 inches that is being reported. Here in a JP a messy 2 inches at best. Wind is still swirling.

    1. Thanks Hadi. Those totals look accurate from what people I’ve talked to said. Its hard to tell with compacting but I’d figured 3-4 here. In January 27 inches would b a big deal. Incredible

  30. I haven’t officially measured, but I think I can safely say less than inch here in Dedham. Thinking of those folks out in Plainfield – WOW!

  31. The village of Brant Rock did fine. There are signs of a stream of splashover (sea weed, sand and a few rocks), but there is no trapped water in the village or any boulders………….The ocean is white with foam and there’ll be some good leftover surfing rollers in a day or two for the surfers.

Can see blue sky to the west.

  32. 4.7 inches in Woburn thanks to a final burst at 3:30AM.

Most areas in my 1-4 inch belt got 1 to 5 inches. The belt west of here (4-8) verified mostly, as did the 8-12. As I noted above, I did not anticipate the 18-27 inch amounts, but I’m not sure how forecastable those are anyway.

Minor to moderate tree damage in this area. Scattered power outages. We had surges here, lost cable and internet for a grand total of 10 minutes, never lost power fully.

The trees are mostly clear of snow already from wind and marginal temperatures.

Woburn’s giant Halloween Parade is ON. My son’s a sign carrier in it. This parade is a big deal for our city, and runs about as long as Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, minus the gigantic character balloons! 20 to 25 bands, 40 to 45 floats. It’s been colder than it’s going to be out there today, and windier. And we’re a tough city, so we’ll all be fine. Going to shovel, get my son to the staging area, have lunch, and then get myself down by the end of the parade route to watch and meet him after. Should be a fun time!

I’m going to toss a fresh blog up, just a quick update. Please go there and share the rest of your observations and thoughts.

Hope everyone that has no power gets it back soon!!!
