  1. We have a many discussions on school calendars.

I found out that all of the schools in Rhode Island will be on the exact same calendar for 2020-21. They will all start and end on the same day, have the same vacations and holidays. There will be three religious holidays, one Jewish, one Muslim and one Christian. All professional days will be uniform. All Rhode Island high schools will hold graduations on June 4.

Massachusetts’ plan for school reopening in the late summer/fall should be out next week.

    1. It seems other than coordinating calendars that RI is not doing anything differently? Or is this just a bit of its proposal

  2. NY, CT, NJ now have 14 day quarantine for anyone coming from the states with spikes. I wonder if baker will follow suit

How amazing that the states that were doing the worst are now doing the best.

  3. Just a few weeks ago, my cousin had to fly to Florida twice for family emergencies. She lives in MA. The first time she flew from RI and had to agree to a 14-day quarantine when she got to FL. A few day later, she flew from NH and there was no such requirement. They based it on where the airplane came from and not where the people lived! And now, the tables are turning.

    1. Correction, she flew from CT when the quarantine was required. That is one of the states implementing quarantines now.

      1. Surprises me FL made her quarantine.

Macs cousin owns a vacation home in Stowe. They just take food and stay in the house.

Most important…..I am So sorry your cousin had to fly twice for emergencies. How horribly difficult even under the best of circumstances.

  4. I agree what the governor’s of CT, NY, and NJ are doing. The tri state area was hit the hardest with COVID 19 and they don’t want to go backwards after the tremendous efforts that were made to stop the spread. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called the measures we took draconian but when you look at the data coming out of these states the draconian measures worked and look where Florida is now. I keep seeing headlines Florida next epicenter for this pandemic.

    1. Baker mentioned it and I missed what he said. I don’t have the sense he will implement but wonder if someone heard his response

    1. Omg. I said the other day that my mantra was that it cannot get worse. I switched to not only is it worse but there is no longer a bottom

  5. Realistically, how can a state legally enforce a quarantine for people who arrive from an infected state?

I wonder if, technically, it could be challenged in court?

    1. Macs cousin that I mentioned quarantining in VT is a lawyer and has worked with Bush, Obama and Warren. I do know that the governor is within his absolute right to order masks and stay at home. Loosely, he has complete responsibility for keeping the people in his state safe. I would think this would fall under that but will ask.

  6. Add California to the list of states not having a good day today
    Tweet from Jon Passantino
California sets three new coronavirus records today: New daily reported cases, hospitalizations, and patients in intensive care. The statewide Covid-19 positivity rate is now above 5%

Here is the situation in Houston, TX from Zach Despart
For 11th time in 13 days, #Houston region has set a COVID hospitalization record, with 2,251 patients.
@TXMEDCenter reporting 98% ICU capacity used
    – At same rate, system projects base ICU full as soon as tomorrow
    – “Sustainable” surge ICU exhausted by July 6

    1. I can’t recall if I posted LA county is blowing up with cases but as my youngest said ….have they ever stopped. They shut very little down …if anything. But Macs brother said yesterday that they are even seeing a tick up in San Francisco area.

If we have the worst states now doing the best in the country…..HOW DOES ANYONE still disagree with the approach?

  7. The Houston situation is really sad, as are the situations in many locales across the South, Southeast, and Southwest. Deaths are increasing, as are hospitalizations. I saw this yesterday, and am seeing it today. Deaths are also occurring among a younger demographic. It’s not just more new cases. What makes it especially difficult to bear is that this was definitely preventable. One could say that everyone was blindsided by the virus as first: From the Chinese to the Italians to the Americans. But, more than 3 months after it hit the Seattle area, Northeast, and parts of the Midwest hard, you’d think policymakers would have learned a thing or two. Alas, they haven’t. Or, they fetishized reopening. What I mean to say is certain policymakers and officials – remember Lt. Governor Patrick in Texas, his comments in late March on the need to reopen – have been obsessed with reopening from the moment the decision was made to shut down. In their desire to reopen, they did so recklessly. They made reopening a binary switch. It’s not, or at least shouldn’t be. To have an economy fully recover or even function normally, you must address the virus first, contain it, and use evidence as your guide to reopening in phases. No economy should be as open as Texas is at this moment, with practically no ordinances in place for physical distancing, masks, or gatherings. Reopening must proceed cautiously and guided by data, not simply the desire (fetish) to reopen come what may.

French President Macron put it well. He said that reopening is occurring in stages, but will not be completed for 2 years. It’s only in 2 years time, bar a very efficacious vaccine, that France will be totally normal again. And what this means is that precautions must be in place for 2 years. Not draconian measures. Just common sense, such as 25-50% restaurant capacity, same with school classes that will have to be spread out as a result, working from home for those that can, masks indoors, physical distancing in all indoor places, no large gatherings or conferences indoors whatsoever. To this end, the French government is ensuring that those affected by temporary or permanent job losses get paid up to 84% of their salary (and up to a certain ceiling) for 2 years. To pay for this, defense budgets will be cut, among other things.

    1. Wow. I have had to read this twice. So much amazing information and common sense to absorb.

May I share this with a few friends ?

    2. Speaking of France, the Eiffel Tower will reopen tomorrow. GMA on ABC-TV will broadcast from there in the morning.

      1. And thank you Joshua for your valuable contributions on this side on the blog. It helps considerably in these trying times. 🙂

  8. You can’t make this stuff up. It borders on criminal negligence:

Trump, Feb 28: “It’s going to disappear. One day, it’s like a miracle, it .”will disappear.”
de Blasio, Mar 1: “Go about your lives, go about your business
Cuomo, Mar 2: “We are fully coordinated, and we are fully mobilized, and we are fully prepared to deal with the situation as it develops.”
Pence, Apr 24: “We’ll have this coronavirus epidemic behind us by Memorial Day weekend.”
Ducey, Jun 11: “The virus is ongoing, but the world needs to keep turning”
Abbott, Jun 16: “No reason to be alarmed today.”
Trump, Jun 18: “Coronavirus is dying out.”
