  1. Several hundred demonstrators were outside the State House yesterday protesting the mandatory influenza vaccine for all students through college age. The tv reporter noted at the end of the segment that there were very few masks or social distancing.

I will bet also that these were Trump supporters as well even though there were no actual signs that I could tell.

    1. These folks know that their kids are already required to have certain vaccines for school admission. I understand some children have had severe reaction to some vaccines. I know this happens. My youngest had a serious reaction to the DPT. The mandate allows for medical or religious exemptions so where in heavens name is the problem.

As the mom of a child who could not have a whooping cough vaccine, I know how very important it is that those who can have the vaccine do exactly that to protect others (others being the key word here and not self). I do hope we can somehow get back to the day when are not so self serving.

    2. The anti-vaxx community is a bit more diverse than people think. It’s nNot just Trump supporters. There are some people on the left who oppose vaccinations – remember the fringe Democratic presidential candidate Marianne Williamson. But, by and large, the anti-vaxx community draws its support from people on the right who are opposed to government interference.

  2. Since March there’s been a discussion about classification of Covid-19 deaths. It’s unfortunately been yet another instance of politicization of something that really isn’t political. Under-counting and over-counting have occurred. The former occurred, for instance, when a number of nursing homes were wiped out early in the pandemic but practically no-one was tested for the coronavirus. Because they weren’t tested some states and countries to this day (eg, Arizona, Florida, the Netherlands) do not include these deaths as Covid-19 related. Then there is over-counting. For example, it’s been reported that there have been cases in which a someone who was shot to death, tested positive for coronavirus in the hospital, and was subsequently included as a Covid-19 death.

And now the political discussion is on how many people died solely from Covid-19. 6%, was the answer in a tweet yesterday that gained notoriety. This is a red herring. Worse than that, it’s nonsensical. The vast majority of people who die from any disease have co-morbidities. And doctors will tell you that they rarely if ever assign one cause of death: https://twitter.com/meganranney/status/1300460500392738816

Denialism is rampant. I think it’s partly the function of a mostly uneducated population.

    1. Good but sad read, Joshua. I am mentally debating your last sentence. Are people uneducated when they deliberately look for sources that support their beliefs….no matter the truth of those sources? What I’m wondering is whether you see this on both sides of the political spectrum. I’m aware that many on the right use the mindset that it has only been a small percentage while ignoring the horrific numbers that percent represents. But is the left inflating numbers also?

Some of the rhetoric makes me wonder about some blind attention that folks demonstrate when announcing that this entire thing is a hoax and will end if Biden wins. Is that uneducated or worse?

As you can see, your comments have me thinking. I like it when comments do that. But I’m at a loss to figure all of this out so am hoping you have some insight!!! Thank you!!!

  3. Vicki, I just read your comment. I think that I should have used a better word – ignorant – as this reflects what I believe afflicts both sides. A lot of the news we see on cable isn’t so much news as commentary. Unfortunately, many people only tune in to one side of a story. They refuse to be educated by trying to balance things out. I don’t blame Trump for this. We’ve had this problem for decades. It’s just that social media has made it worse.

On Covid-19, it’s hard to be nuanced, as either side will seek to undermine you.

I got vilified by several people on the left for writing about the possibility that more people are immune to coronavirus than we can verify by way of seroprevalence.

I’ve been harshly criticized by several people on the right – including siblings of mine who are very conservative – for being critical of the Trump Administration’s blunders on Covid-19.

On climate change, it’s hard to be nuanced, as either side will seek to undermine you. Either side searches for – cherry picks – data that provide them with comfort, if you will, that their position is the `right’ one. It’s no longer a scientific search for the truth. No, certitude is here and either side is convinced of its version of the truth.

    It’s sad, really.

Where’s Karl Popper when you need him. I love his philosophy of science, which essentially says every scientific theory must be refutable, or else it’s not science. Then, the point of science is to attempt to falsify ingrained ideas or theories that we’ve had for many years.

I constantly question my perspectives on many things. I adjust based on new data, or new theoretical premises.

But, nowadays that’s not what sells: Everyone, even many scientists, must have a `take’ and run with it come hell or high water.

    1. Wonderfully honest comment. I understand. I have serious problems with both sides. This is not a political forum so some is missed. I won’t apologize for my dislike of trump. He stands for everything that I find morally wrong. The end has never justified the means for me. I didn’t like Jrs policies but was comforted by his approach after 911 and know he cared for this country. I liked obama but feel he did serious injustice to our folks in law enforcement. However, I Believe he also loves this country. There is no one person who We will ever Be able to honestly say we agree with 100%.

All of that said…..I would truly like to have non like minded people comment here. Trump doesn’t have to be part of anything to do with schools or covid or many other things. We cannot learn unless we hear respectful views of others.
