  1. I was thinking king last night that typical snow days involve power outages for many towns. I’m not sure how they can be avoided. Even today would be a snow day for the towns that don’t have power. Since Wednesday is a day for schools to clean for many, perhaps that will be the saving Grace this time.

  2. The `debate’ last night touched upon several Covid-19 topics. Moderator Chris Wallace did a terrible job. If you’re going to ask questions about a topic, intervene if what you hear is untrue, or, if you need clarification, ask for it. This applies to both candidates.

Trump’s promise of a vaccine next month gives false hope on many levels. First, it’s unlikely there will be any vaccine approved next month, even for emergency use. Second, even if there is one approved for emergency use its utilization will be extremely limited. Widespread vaccination will not occur until spring or summer of 2021. Period.

Trump’s defense of packed rallies (indoor and out) and the fact that he violated no rules and no-one got sick is patently false. He violated dozens of state and local rules. And, in addition to Herman Cain there are probably instances of dozens, if not hundreds, of transmissions occurring due to rallies: lack of physical distancing and mask-wearing.

Biden’s silly quote, which people somehow like, on Trump being responsible for the coronavirus (impact) because “you [Trump] are who you are.” Wallace should have intervened and asked Biden to explain. These throwaway lines bother me so much. They’re nonsensical garbage. Sure, Trump bears responsibility, but explain it, Joe, don’t just toss out an inane sentence.

Biden’s comments on the Affordable Care Act and pre-existing conditions deserve further scrutiny. Democrats insist wrongly that a conservative dominated Supreme Court will definitely overturn the ACA. It is highly unlikely that will happen, because the case for overturning the ACA is very weak. Even conservative justices will not overturn existing law if the arguments to do so are flimsy.

I want facts at these `debates,’ as well as arguments. If they fit into a nice zinger, great. If not, stop the dumb one-liners.

Trump also said an obviously false thing: Drug prices under his executive orders would go down 80-90%! Wallace did not intervene. Should have, because what Trump said was a blatant lie. I’ve analyzed his EOs extensively. At most – and under HIS Administration’s rules! – they would go down 30%. That’s a floor established by the Trump Administration!

Of course, there was the Proud Boys moment, which made me feel ashamed to be a bearer of a US passport.

Chris Wallace: “Are you willing, tonight, to condemn white supremacists and militia groups and to say that they need to stand down…” Trump: “Proud Boys, stand back and stand by!”

Good God, what country do we live in when a sitting president, during a debate which millions are viewing, says that an extreme para-military group should “stand back and stand by.”

The silence from Wallace was deafening. I would have said, “Mr. President, you do know who the Proud Boys are … are you defending and requesting assistance from a para-military group?”

    1. I think Wallace did indeed do a bad job. However, I also believe the president had no intention of being stopped. It is a shame that his microphone could not be turned off. To me, putting the lion’s share of blame on Wallace is tantamount to saying the president of the united states cannot behave unless he is handled properly. Liberal and conservative folks who have the microphone are in shock. As far as Biden clarifying things. I wish he had done more. There were several times I yelled at the TV that Biden forgot to mention this or forgot to mention that. But then with Trump deliberately talking over nearly every word, I wonder how he could have done better than he did.

I absolutely understood Biden’s comment “you are who you are.” Did anyone not anticipate every single move Trump has made with regard to Covid? I’d say hold on for a horror show in November. ACA and women’s rights are not the prize the president has in mind if he gets his appointment.

      1. Perhaps it would be best if the remaining debates be canceled since it is obvious neither candidate can behave themselves. Just let them run their respective campaigns and may the “best” man win on Nov. 3 (or whatever later date).

        1. You are good SClarke. Although with friends in other countries I know the world is watching in horror and fear. But these comments are chilling.

Following that with the parrots was genius It had me laughing out loud.

  3. This is the first week back in school full time for the kids in Coventry after going the first 4 weeks of the school year hybrid. So far so good although its early. Our neighboring school district to the south, Andover, has been going full time since the start of the year and Tolland to the north is also switching from hybrid to full time. South Windsor is ramping the elementary schools up to full time but keeping junior and senior high schools hybrid for now.

Fall sports are moving forward with practices this week and an abbreviated 5 week season. My daughter is running cross country and son is playing soccer. They are botching playing fall softball and baseball on the weekends as well. It is nice to have a sense of normalcy again!

  4. Connecticut is also moving to Phase 3 of its reopening plan starting next week on Oct 8. Restaurants will be up to 75% capacity indoors. Economy will be 99% open at this point with one of the few exceptions being bars/night clubs.

While there has been a slight uptick in positivity rate and hospitalizations in CT the past few weeks, it has been just that – a tick and not a surge. Overall rates continue to be quite low (<2%) and there are about 100 people hospitalized in the State.

    1. Your state has done very well, Mark.

I’m so happy for you and your children that they have a sense of normalcy during this difficult time.

Locally, the Hill House on Beacon Hill, which offers after school programs and summer camp, has done well. When I walk by the Hill House, I’m happy to see the kids in their normal routines.

    1. If you don’t follow Heather Cox Richardson, I find her daily emails straight forward and all encompassing. I’ve read a lot of takes in the debate. Of all, I believe hers is the most accurate. She is on FB. If you are interested, I can email you a few if you don’t have FB access
