  1. Let’s start with the good news. We’re up at a 7-day moving average of >1.3 million vaccinations (single doses). That’s real progress in the last 10 days.

Case growth has diminished by 35% in the past 21 days. Hospitalizations have declined by 21% in the past 21 days.
Deaths have stabilized, though at a very high level. 4,200 on Tuesday and roughly the same number on Wednesday.

Germany has seen a dramatic decline in case growth, though hospitalizations and deaths have remained high. Similar in the Netherlands and UK.

Bad news is that France, Portugal, and Spain are seeing steady increases in cases and hospitalizations. Likely spurred by the B117 variant.

Also concerning is that B117 detected cases are rising in the U.S. steadily, and the P1 Brazil variant has been detected in at least 1 state, with South Carolina reporting several cases with the South Africa variant.

Let’s hope that reinfections remain rare, and vaccines are indeed effective against all variants. Otherwise, we’re in deep trouble.

  2. Vaccination levels are really improving, which is good to see.

But, nationwide, case growth has plateaued at a very high level. Not going down further this week (at least not yet), which is disappointing. In fact, I believe today’s cases will be more than yesterday’s, and yesterday’s were nearly 10k more than the day before.

Test positivity is around 9%, which is better than a few weeks ago, but still way too high, and not declining this week after 2 weeks of decreases.

Right now 107k patients in hospitals nationwide. It’s come down slightly this week, but the decrease has slowed a lot compared to last week and the week before.

I fear a slight rebound in hospitalizations soon.

And this is before a possible B117 or P1 or SA variant incursion. I’m not heartened by the data that suggests the P1 and SA variants are significantly reducing the efficacy of available vaccines, especially in high-risk groups like the elderly.

We must get cases down to below 50k/day, and test positivity below 4%. These aren’t magic numbers. Yet, we have to go in this direction. Otherwise we just prolong the agony.
