  1. Regarding the upcoming J & J vaccine:

Good news: One dose, little refrigeration required, effective against any variants. 85% effective.

Bad news: Only 3-4 M doses available.

  2. Remember, I have been worried about commissioner Riley’s honesty? Remember, he said in the presser last week that CDC recommends 3 feet for Massachusetts because our PPE, etc is in order? Remember, he said it may soon be less than 3 feet?

  3. Moderna shot 1 today. A bit lightheaded 90 minutes post—likely psycho-somatic….going to take it easy regardless….

    1. Very odd and unscientific that the 12% rule applies to both indoor and outdoor stadiums. Outdoor can be (much) higher than 12% and still be safe. I’d say 35% capacity, for example. Indoor should probably not happen at all until a much larger proportion of the population is vaccinated and Covid numbers are significantly lower; so, say, by April or May.

      1. The whole mess is odd and against the suggestions of our best scientists. Macs brother suggested listening to Michael Osterholm….I did and he is warning is that we have a surge coming.

Why should this surprise us? We have followed Europe all along. Maybe he is wrong…but what Baker is doing flies in the face of folks who know one heck of a lot more than he does.

        1. Indeed, we have followed Europe in almost every successive wave, except the sunbelt wave.

A factor in our favor compared to the continent of Europe is our better vaccination rate: 2 to 3 times better. That should blunt a surge in new infections. More importantly, it should stem a rise in hospitalizations. Nevertheless, the new variants are more potent, so their CFR – even among younger folks – is higher than the older variants.

I’ve been in touch with Osterholm. While he’s a bit gloomy and I’d like to believe he’s wrong, he’s been right more often than not. I do suspect he’s underestimating the vaccination countervailing force in the U.S.

But, we must be careful. Hungary is going through its worst 2 weeks of the pandemic right now. The Czech Republic is surging. Italy and France are seeing increases in cases AND hospitalizations. Sweden, the Netherlands and several others are plateauing in cases, hospitalizations, and deaths, at rather high levels.

Good news is that the U.K. continues to see progress, and that must be vaccine-driven, as its vaccination rate is even higher than ours; nearly twice as high according to some estimates.

          1. Thanks Joshua. I have mixed feelings re Osterholm also. He seems guided a bit more by politics than Fauci seems to be and can contradict himself. Yes…very good news re UK.
