  1. According to Dr. Fauci, children under 12 won’t get the vaccine until early 2022 and high school students (teens) sometime this fall.

  2. Received my second Pfizer dose this morning. Most of my coworkers and others I know who’ve gotten it have had worse reactions (fever, aches, fatigue) to the second shot than the first, mainly the day after the shot. We’ll see how it goes for me but I’m certainly happy to get it!

    1. I am going to try to hold out for the “one” dose J & J vaccine. No side effects at all as far as I know. I believe that brand will be the game changer for us all.

  3. The R0 value in the Netherlands has gone from 0.99 to 1.14 in a couple of weeks. That’s alarming. It’s mostly driven by the variants. The Netherlands is now 3rd on the EU ranking of national vaccination rates – climbing 15 places in 2 weeks. But, it’s not enough to prevent a persistent crisis.

A growing number of Central European countries are in severe crisis mode, including Hungary and the Czech Republic.

Our vaccinate rate is much better than the EU (somewhat shocking to me), but nearlynot as good as the UK. Still, our vaccination push may be what’s holding the variants at bay. At least this is what I’m hoping.

For those interested: My latest Forbes pieces are on the Biden Administration considering the possibility of establishing a national health technology assessment entity. It would look like the German IQWiG. https://www.forbes.com/sites/joshuacohen/2021/03/02/what-could-bidens-possible-bid-for-a-national-health-technology-assessment-entity-look-like/?sh=1edd88411a95

  4. Thank you, Joshua. I will read this evening. I did see Merck will be working with J&J to increase vaccine production. Nice to see folks working together.

      1. Hope so, but there are only 2 or 3 million doses available nationwide, which means that initially J&J vaccine availability will be sporadic.

By the way, Texas isn’t doing so great in terms of vaccinations; it’s ranked 48th in the nation. And yet the governor is opening everything up 100%. I find that idiotic. Keep in mind Texas loses hundreds of people to Covid-19 every day. It also has a high infection rate. And, in Texas the Latino community has been especially hard hit, also among the <65 age group (practically none in this age group are vaccinated).

  5. If I understood President Biden correctly, the J&J vaccine production will be 24/7.

Also, every American will have access to vaccinations by the end of May! 🙂

    1. Let’s hope so. Better to under-promise and over-deliver. Also, having an adequate supply does NOT ensure the vaccines will be used. 41% of Americans say they will not get vaccinated.

Europe is really in the thick of a battle with the variants and also vaccine hesitancy and a problematic rollout (except Finland, Denmark, and the UK). Besides Central Europe, France, Italy, and the Netherlands seeing increases in hospitalizations – especially in the 45-70 year groups (the older group has mostly been vaccinated).

I’m pleasantly surprised the U.S. is sort of dodging the bullet thus far. This said, hospitalizations have ticked up today for the first time in 7 weeks. In spite of the fact that the >70 age group is doing much better (vaccinations work!), the case fatality rate has been increasing slightly just like in Europe, which suggests to me that the more severe variants are here and are impacting that middle group that hasn’t been vaccinated nearly as much.

      1. I try to be positive. But it seems we have taken a bit more time than this to follow Europe. I sure as heck hope This is the exception. But we are predictably ignoring what is happening around us and loosening restrictions. Texas is a joke. But for the CDC to literally name Massachusetts and suggest we move slowly, speaks volumes. And baker isn’t listening…

    2. By end of May if they don’t live in Massachusetts. Some places today either cancelled second appointments or in the case of Gillette sent folks home because they overbooked.
