  1. I have a friend in Scotland who is sick with what I believe is the Delta variant. She was fully vaccinated but apparently a case where the “less than 100%” protection turned out to be not enough for her. She’s lacking the ability to taste and feels somewhat lousy, but her symptoms are not severe and she seems to be turning the corner now.

    1. Breakthrough infections do occur. Thankfully, the vaccines ensure in most cases that the person impacted does not get severe disease. This said, those with breakthrough infections are likely to be contagious for a certain period of time. This keeps the ball rolling, if you will, from the virus’s perspective, as it can then be passed on to others and so on and so forth.

I wish your friend a speedy recovery.

    2. Hope your friends case remains minimal. I’m wondering if this is why our borders remain closed. The link from SClarke show a lot of states under 60% vaccinated. The SA border being open makes no sense to me though.

  2. Vicki had asked yesterday about whether there’s an association between different types of vaccines and breakthrough infections. It appears that there isn’t much of a difference across vaccines. Fully dosed people – whether AZ, Pfizer, or Moderna – have between a 5 and 15% chance of contracting the virus. It appears that Pfizer provides slightly more protection against severe disease, hospitalization, and death. But it’s only a very slight difference.

    1. Thank you, Joshua. It seems different vaccines in other countries are not doing as well or am I incorrect?

    1. Great article and what I’ve hoped to see outlined in one place. The only part I absolutely disagree with and it really has nothing to do with the big picture the article can be guessed by most who know me do I’ll let it alone

I will share this with my kids who are struggling with the decision for very legitimate reasons. Thanks Dave.

  3. According to Gov. Baker and the DESE, masks will NOT be required for students in the fall. I assume this is for all grade levels.

I wonder if this will lead to no more masks for public transportation, grocery/convenience stores, churches and libraries as well come fall? I believe those institutions are “the last frontiers” if you will.

    1. I just listened to a cdc dr …can’t recall her name….who has young children and is debating vaccination but absolutely believes many children won’t be vaccinated by fall and masks should be required. If the delta variant or any variant is still present, For us not to have masks indoors IMO is sheer negligence. Her four year old is at a summer camp that does require masks indoors

Frankly for Baker to say this definitely for what is months away would be inexcusable. Do you know where you read this. I haven’t listened to baker lately

      1. I heard him on last night’s evening newscast and again early this morning on WBZ radio. I hope it’s not too good to be true.

I get the impression that Baker and DESE are counting on continuing high vaccination rates for the summer, leading to herd immunity to make up for those remaining who are still not vaccinated.

        1. I have no use for DESE. As is the case with CDC and FDA and the academy of pediatric physicians, its politics have proven to be questionable at best.

  4. Vicki, the vaccines that have the most questionable efficacy are Sinovac, Sputnik, and an Indian vaccine (can’t recall the name). This doesn’t mean these vaccines are worthless, but it does mean they’re significantly less effective than Pfizer, Moderna, Astra Zeneca, and J&J.

    1. From what I understand, the Pfizer is the very best of all the vaccines. Glad that my particular vaccination site (BWH) made the right choice!

      95% effective!

      1. The U.S. made the right choices for vaccines, also in terms of purchases. We can thank the Trump Administration and Biden Administration for that. While much of the development occurred overseas (in German) for the Pfizer/BioNTech the Trump Administration made a calculated gamble and bought hundreds of millions of doses of the product before it even got emergency use authorization. That was a brilliant move. Also, it funded Moderna vaccine development as well as Janssen’s (though most of that vaccine was developed in the Netherlands). Recently, the Biden Administration has made additional purchases of all three vaccines.

  5. The Northeast continues to do very well. The Midwest and Plains are doing well, too, as is California. There are, however, some hotspots developing. One is Missouri:

Another is Arkansas. Also Utah appears headed in the wrong direction. Florida is seemingly in neutral, but it’s only revealing data periodically (not daily). I’m concerned about that state. I predict other Southern states, and Arizona, too, will see increasing cases in the coming weeks.

    1. The Deep South could be in deep trouble if those states don’t increase vaccination rates. I just don’t understand their stubborn hesitancy.

      1. I understand some but am afraid a good deal is political which I don’t understand. I may be wrong

        1. I also am puzzled as to why healthcare workers of all people displaying hesitancy. Awhile back on the tv news a number of them were demonstrating in front of a Houston hospital refusing to get vaccinated. Healthcare workers should be setting the example, if anything imo.

          1. They were protesting because the hospital was mandating they be vaccinated with a vaccine yet to be approved. I’d be surprised if that is legal but then it is Texas. Texas doesn’t mandate the flu shot.
