  1. Two tidbits for the day:

First, the importance of being or getting vaccinated is underscored by this recent outbreak that killed two Manatee county (Florida) workers under 60 (both were unvaccinated): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5K22KEcUniM

The Delta variant advance is being monitored by the University of Minnesota, an excellent resource for all things public health, by the way. https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2021/06/multiple-nations-battle-covid-19-surges-delta-variant-advances-israel

  2. There is good news to report. Nationwide, U.S. cases are falling (as are hospitalizations). There was a plateau for a while, but that ended about 10 days ago and we’re gradually seeing fewer cases. We’re not quite to 10k per day but certainly getting close. Let’s hope the Delta variant doesn’t mess things up over here. We do already have about 10 hotspots in the country that are showing the effects of the Delta incursion. Thankfully, none of these hotspots are anywhere close to New England.

      1. Yes, Thanks Joshua. I wonder if geography has at least some factor into the Delta variant not penetrating much into the U.S.

We do have an entire ocean between us and Europe/Asia keeping us at “arms” length if you will.

        1. Yes and no. As mentioned we don’t seem to see much evidence (yet) of the Delta variant in the Northeast, but we are seeing evidence of it in Arkansas, Utah, Missouri, Florida, and Mississippi. What do the latter states have in common? Well, lower vaccination rates. They’re just as far, if not farther from the source of Delta (overseas) and yet because of their lower vaccination rates Delta has been able to penetrate there deeper than it has here.

For the U.S. as a whole the case numbers keep getting adjusted. This is because some states are reporting late or only reporting every other day or just once a week. Still a downward trend, which is good, but yesterday’s cases were 11,005 and have now been revised upward to 13,103. I’m hoping today’s numbers stay below 13k. I’d like to see the U.S. have case numbers – 7-day average – well under 10k by the 2nd week of July.

I don’t think Massachusetts numbers will rise as dramatically as we’ve seen in the UK, even if Delta gains more of a foothold. But, I have been wrong before. I also thought the UK was near herd immunity. It clearly is not.

Let’s hope that our total lack of mitigation doesn’t bite us in the ass, so to speak.

  3. Here’s an interesting article in The Guardian about rising case rates causing 250,000 children in England to miss school last week due to COVID infections, quarantining, or school closure. Note that the school year in England ends in July, about 4 weeks from now.

I have read that there is a higher rate of long COVID in children who have been infected with the delta variant than with other variants. Even in children who had asymptomatic infections. I think I read it’s about 8%… scary if true.

It all makes me wonder if the scale might be tipping in favor of vaccinating children… Vicki? Joshua? What do you think?

    1. Wow. That is sad. I am really on the fence re vaccinating youths. But that is because we just don’t have enough information. This surely is something in the pro vaccine column. I’ll share with my kids. Thank you so much

      1. I read the article. I need to think about it a bit. It is an excellent and telling article. Thank you for posting. I would have missed it
