Sunday July 25 2021 Forecast (8:47AM)

DAYS 1-5 (JULY 25-29)

It’s easy to get up and look out the window this morning to showers moving through and thinking to yourself we haven’t changed weather patterns at all. But, we have. We’re in a pattern now, while still “active” in terms of regular systems passing by, they are doing just that, passing by, and not sitting on us for several days at a time with excessive rainfall amounts. Right now, we’re in the midst of the passage of a disturbance (low pressure passing to the north) which will drag its warm front across the region today and then its cold front during tonight. This does mean an unsettled weather day, but most of the rainfall we see is with the warm front this morning. Once we reach midday and afternoon, we see less rainfall around, and largely rain-free time with just the chance of a few showers and thunderstorms developing in a somewhat unstable and humid air mass. A final round of showers and storms may visit some areas with the cold front tonight, and this sets us up for a great summer day Monday as high pressure over the Upper Ohio Valley stretches toward New England. But it appears in this “things keep moving along” pattern we’re due for a frontal passage about every other day, and we’ll watch for something coming along later Tuesday and again, based on current timing, during the day Thursday, with shower and thunderstorm possibilities, with high pressure between the 2 systems providing a nice day for Wednesday. Again, none of these look like all-day rain events, though Thursday’s may be a bit more “spread out” as opposed to Tuesday’s more concise and shorter-duration impact event. As always, fine tuning will be done as we get close to each of these…

TODAY: Cloudy with periodic rain through mid morning tapering off from west to east by midday. Mostly cloudy to partly sunny midday on with isolated showers and thunderstorms possible from mid afternoon on. Highs 77-84, cooler in some coastal areas. Dew point climbing through 60s. Wind S up to 10 MPH morning, SW 5-15 MPH afternoon.

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy with isolated to scattered showers and possible thunderstorms. Patchy fog. Lows 65-72. Dew point upper to middle 60s. Wind SW 5-15 MPH shifting to W toward dawn.

MONDAY: Partly cloudy to mostly sunny. Highs 81-88. Dew point falling through 60s. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 60-67. Dew point upper 50s. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Partly sunny. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms possible. Highs 78-85. Dew point rising into 60s. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers and thunderstorms in the evening. Areas of fog. Lows 65-72. Dew point upper 60s. Wind SW to variable 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Partly to mostly sunny. Highs 75-82. Dew point near 60. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Clear evening. Increasing clouds overnight. Lows 57-64. Dew point middle 50s, rising toward 60. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Variably cloudy. Episodes of showers and possible thunderstorms. Highs 77-84. Dew point rising through 60s. Wind S 5-15 MPH shifting to W.

DAYS 6-10 (JULY 30 – AUGUST 3)

Every-other-day pattern continues with a west northwesterly flow and best chances for showers / t-storms July 31 and August 2. Temperatures slightly variable but mostly near normal with no lasting significant heat.

DAYS 11-15 (AUGUST 4-8)

Similar pattern relaxes a little bit, tendency for warmer to hotter weather increases a little and shower / t-storm chances remain limited at first, but may have to watch later in the period for a slower-moving frontal boundary in the area with an increased chance of wet weather

  1. Thanks, TK—thoughts on Sox starting on-time at 1:10? Taking my son to his first game today….

    1. How exciting. I honestly still remember my first time walking down that ramp at Fenway. And it was way too many years ago to count. Enjoy

  2. Thank you, TK.

Dave, your son will love his first game at Fenway. Enjoy!

I will never forget my first experience in 1970. For some reason, I liked Joe Lahoud. Maybe it was the name. I also liked the pitcher Sonny Siebert, who could hit. Smacked a double that day. But Gates Brown of the Tigers hit the game-winning hit in the 9th.

  3. TK, you are so correct about this NOT being the same pattern. Some sprinkles, yes. But torrential rain, no. Disturbances are moving on through. We’re also getting back into a normal July pattern of seeing the sun more frequently. I did miss the sun, and really enjoyed it yesterday.

  4. Just had a fast hard shower here in Swampscott … now steady rain. Should pass through shortly. I have not watered the plants on my balcony this month.

Had a terrible fall while hiking in the White Mountains this past Thursday. The trails were wet and the rocks slippery from rain and I was somewhat dehydrated I believe. Fell off a trail ledge. Fortunately fell backwards and my backpack provided a “cushion.” Still got a small fracture in L1 vertebrae. Only time will heal it.

I should ask the doctors whether wine will help it heal faster. I’m pretty sure it will. 🙂

      1. There must be a direct link between Cabernet and healing the L1 vertebrae.

I will say: 1) I was definitely tired from what was already an 8 hour hike 2) I have been on 7 climbs this summer and the rains have definitely made the trails muddy and the rocks slick.

I climbed Mt Washington recently and was invited to climb it again up the Huntington’s Ravine Trail … acknowledged as the most difficult and dangerous trail in the Whites. I am passing on that excursion.

        Skies are getting brighter.

    1. I am so sorry to hear this. I noticed you were not here and worries because I thought I recalled you going to P town. I was happy to see your name here till I read. Prayers for a quick recovery.

        1. Ugh. That isn’t easy. I’ve been having gout issues which is not close to as painful as what you are dealing with so have been on the couch. I am burning through books and hallmark Christmas movies but struggle not to be bored. I wish you the very best

  5. Downpour ended a short time ago, now a light but steady rain.

I bet Logan gets closer to 11.69”. It won’t be because Mother Nature ain’t trying. Still 6 days left.

  6. Thanks TK.

On and off showers and sprinkles here today in Riverside RI but nothing heavy enough to impact the softball games. Bombers are one inning away from going to another championship game if they can hold on here.

Longshot, sorry to hear about your fall and I hope you have a speedy recovery. The trails on that mountain are never to be taken for granted, especially when the rocks are wet (which is more times than not). It’s so easy to misstep, especially when you are tired. Been there before but am fortunate enough to never have had a serious fall. A bottle of Josh and some painkillers will hopefully do the trick!

Which trail were you on? I’d definitely steer clear of Huntington Ravine.. that trail is borderline climbing!

  7. Longshot, Huntington’s Ravine trail is a beast. Steeper than many Alpine trails in France I’ve climbed (not sure about the Rockies; haven’t hiked there). Did HR trail once. Never again.

      1. Comcast “Sounds of the Seasons” music channel was doing Christmas in July this week. 😉

  8. Dave, your son’s first game at Fenway is turning out to be a thriller. Not over yet, but wow, the Sox turn the tables on the Yankees in the 8th. Yesterday, the Yankees stormed back in the 8th and eventually won. Today, the Sox stormed back to take the lead in the 8th. We’ll see if they can hold the lead. Listening on the radio, the ballpark sounds alive and well. Loud.

      1. It’s actually been quite a nice afternoon. The sun doesn’t have to be shining for the weather to be nice. It’s been rain-free since noon-ish, a little humid but breezy to counteract it, mild (not hot). Great day to be outside walking, for example.

          1. It’s rather gray, as Philip alluded to, but, as TK and Vicki said, it’s a nice day for a stroll and a great day for photography. The wild flowers are spectacular this year, with all the rain. The colors are so vivid against a gray sky.

            1. I love photographing color on cloudy days. One of my favorite things to do with photos. 🙂

  9. Thanks, TK!

Dave: What a game for your son! I hope y’all were able to make it through the bottom of the eighth inning! Best win of the season for the Sox. They are a fun team this year and it’s going to be a great second half of the season!

I can still remember how green Fenway Park was when I entered the park for the very first time as a little boy. I had only seen Fenway Park on a black and white TV and newspaper photos up until that point.

If I remember correctly, my Dad had to take me to the bathroom in the ninth inning and he missed a walk-off win! 🙂

What a treasure we have in Fenway Park in that each generation can introduce the next to it. My Grandpa brought my Dad, my dad brought me and my brothers and I have brought my sons. I love the new stadiums, too. I have been to the new Yankee Stadium and to Camden Yards.

Longshot, I am so sorry to hear about your injury. He’s hope your recovery is quick.

I hope everyone who is on vacation has happy and fun times and is able to recharge. I think SSK and TK are among those on holiday.

We are now at 9.25″ for July, 2021. The July mark is 9.37″ set 100 years ago. We had 0.53″ Friday afternoon in a gully washer that moved us very close to a new record.

    1. * Here’s hoping your recovery is quick! (I am out of teacher-correcting mode!) 🙂

  10. We’re #2!! = 9.54”

TK – Would you say 10.00” is still on the table for Logan?

    1. 11.69”
    2. 9.54”

    1. With 6 days to go and the possibility of showers and t-storms About 3 more times, it’s possible. Although it’s a rather insignificant number. The only one left is reaching or exceeding the #1 spot.
