    1. If I read correctly, a school with 80%+ vaccinated can apply for an exemption. Unvaccinated would still need to mask. I’m hearing mixed comment with regard to the proof of vaccine process.

Joshua, do you know if there has been breakthroughs in under 18 age group?

  1. Vicki, I don’t know if breakthroughs have occurred in the 65 accounting for a large share of breakthroughs, and a disproportionate share of hospitalizations and deaths from breakthroughs.

Vicki, I saw what you wrote about school bus drivers. It’s incredible that they are not seen as close contacts. Nationwide we’ve lost over 160 to Covid-19. They’re frontline workers, if you will.

    1. Something went wrong in my post above. Meant to say I don’t know if breakthroughs have occurred in the 65 age group accounts for a large share …

      1. Happened again. Weird. I don’t know if breakthroughs have occurred in the 65 age groups accounts for a large share …

            1. Personally, I HATE Iphones. I have a work Iphone and I can’t stand it. I use my Android phone for everything.

          1. I figured out what you meant but that has happened to me and it is infuriating. I haven’t figured out why either but suspect it’s has to do with some combination of letters or numbers.

  2. Frankly, I still don’t understand this “breakthrough” thing. It makes no sense to me how a fully vaccinated person gets Covid-19 just as easily as an unvaccinated person.

    Can this be explained?

    1. Because the vaccine is not 100% effective. Although it was highly effective against the original strain, the effectiveness dropped with the Delta variant.

  3. An Arizona judge ruled that the states ban on masks in school is unconstitutional.

What is wrong with this country? These governors and the media sources like the meme JPD posted above need to be held accountable for every illness, every death, EVERYTHING. And we have to stop cow towing to the general public’s loudest voices. People who attend BofH meetings and are actually violent because they don’t want their precious child to wear a mask in school yet are perfectly fine with that same child giving covid to another person’s child need to be muzzled. Yes harsh, but I’m fed up with our inability to do what a best for all rather than grease the squeaky wheel.

      1. It’s a tricky read. He ruled the state ban on masks unconstitutional…..meaning Arizona cannot tell schools kids are not allowed to wear masks in school.

  4. This is DESEs definition of close contact. Imo it is also the definition of irresponsibility. So many things wrong with this. Clearly, DESE logic doesn’t work for buses. And asymptomatic don’t need to test because of course asymptomatic kids can’t spread covid. If I may, I had to chuckle at the combination of three letters in the Imgur link. Says what I was trying not to say

    1. BTW one town in middlesex county that was reported as zero school covid cases last Thursday has several full classrooms in quarantine. And they …..as well as others….still don’t have the tests. No one can tell me the powers that be didn’t know about the test shortage.

  5. I’ll try to answer Vicki’s question on breakthroughs in the under 18 age group without the system doing auto-deletions. I am not aware of under 18 breakthroughs, but am quite certain they do happen. Breakthroughs are most prevalent in the over 65 age group. Also, the over 65 suffer the worst breakthroughs.

I still see people downplaying Covid and acting as if it’s “just the flu.” Well, even if one is skeptical of the Covid death numbers, excess mortality worldwide tells an objective story. Covid is most definitely not the flu. The flu doesn’t do this, even in the worst of years. https://pandem-ic.com/cumulative-excess-deaths-per-capita-by-world-bank-region/

    1. Great question.

The percentage refers to either the number with at least one dose, or the number of fully vaccinated. In both instances, it’s the percentage of eligible folks in each country. This differs slightly from country to country; especially with respect to the 12 to 18 year old demographic.

  6. Long Covid is a mystery. Unfortunately, it’s also a major cause for concern. Covid-19 is known as a respiratory pathogen, but from the outset of the disease, first researchers in Wuhan, then in Milan, then London, then NYC, etc … noticed in some patients (severely ill, but also mildly and moderately ill) organ damage (and sometimes failure) in kidneys, liver, heart, central nervous system, etc … The patient registries for long Covid sufferers are very large. https://twitter.com/i/events/1442543738014900226

    1. Glad no reaction Did they tell you recommended time between second and third? Mgh/Brigham has still not cleared me and I might be over 65

  7. Something I’ve been talking about ad nauseum for several months – U.S. death rate being much, much worse than anywhere else in peer nations. in absolute numbers we’re in a league of our own. But, we’re also doing very poorly in relative numbers. in relative terms (so, our relative ranking compared to our peers), the situation has worsened since January (Biden assumed office), not gotten better. https://twitter.com/TheEconomist/status/1443005232938688516

    1. Thank you, Joshua. I was just reading some posts on Twitter that support this also and saw this. Dear heavens, just frightening
