2 Snows Then A Rain

This portion added at 10:25PM …

Even though below I indicate the most snow from 9PM to 5AM, the heaviest band of snow will cross the Boston area between 11PM and 1:30AM with up to 2 or 3 inches. Roads will be slick as the snow falls but will improve when treated and after the snow tapers off overnight. Additional snow may occur through 5AM but it appears the heaviest will be concentrated into the short period of time indicated above. Please use caution if you have plans to travel during and shortly after these times.

Remainder of this post is from early evening…

5:53PM

We’ll continue with an active weather pattern, chilly in the short-term including 2 snow events, moderating thereafter with a rain event (may start as mix/ice) following these.

A small area of low pressure will cross New England tonight laying down a covering of snow, not very deep though with 2 inches being about the maximum potential amount (outside shot of a few 3 inch amounts). Most of this snow will take place between 9PM and 5AM. Right at the tail end there is a chance for a brief heavier burst of snow which could briefly reduce visibility and impact roads in a few locations for very early commuters.

During the day Friday, a gusty breeze but otherwise quiet and cold weather is expected. Not far behind is the next storm system which will pass south of New England on Saturday. Enough cold air will be around for snow, but amounts will be held down by the fast-moving nature of the system. This looks like a dawn to dusk event for the Boston area.

Another in-between day is expected Sunday with quiet weather. Temperatures for the Patriots/Ravens playoff game at 3PM should be in the middle to lower 30s with a slow fall expected during the game. Winds should be on the light side from the north and for now I am going to leave the threat of any precipitation out of the forecast.

The next storm will arrive Monday, and cold air trapped at the surface may mean a little additional icing inland as it begins to rain due to warmer air coming in above us all. This warm air will win out and a milder, wet day will result. The parent low pressure area should pass northwest of New England by early Tuesday and we should see southwest to west winds sweeping into southern New England with mild air and a few rain showers. Cooler air will eventually move in, but it will be a slow process, leading to a dry and chilly day for Wednesday of next week. The next threat of unsettled weather follows later in the week, and to be honest that’s so far away that I really have no idea how that is going to evolve yet.

In the mean time… the forecast for the Boston area and its neighbors goes this way:

TONIGHT: Cloudy. Snow of up to but mostly less than 2 inches especially between 9PM and 5AM, with an isolated 3 inch amount not out of the question. Low 21-26. Wind light E becoming variable and eventually W.

FRIDAY: Clouds may linger at the coast early otherwise mostly sunny. High 30-35. Wind W increasing to 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.

FRIDAYΒ  NIGHT: Increasing clouds. Low 15-20. Wind W diminishing to near 10 MPH and shifting to N.

SATURDAY: Cloudy with snow likely. Early call on accumulation 2-5 inches. High 25-30. Wind NE 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Lingering snow flurries early. Low 20-25. Wind NE around 10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny. High 35-40. Wind N under 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Cloudy. Ice to rain. Low 29. High 50.

TUESDAY: Variably cloudy. Scattered rain showers. Low 40. High 49.

WEDNESDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 22. High 38.

  1. tonights front coating to 2 inches.
satursday day a big question mark with amounts
models have been saying areas north of the pike will be snow but areas south of the pike will be dealingwith a snow and rain line. It will depend on the exact track.
snow starts out for everyone saturday early am. before 9 am. then comes the tricky part how close does this storm the closer the storm gets the highest amounts around 495 ( which i want) or south with the hieviest in interior southeast mass
Northern track : 0-2 for cape and islands, 2-4 inches interior southeast mass and northwestern mass up into southern new hampshire with 4-8 in northeastern mass Including boston possibly.
more southern track ,areas in southeast mass 3-6 inches with up to 3 inches else where. i want the first one but that is if i am lucky and i am not

    1. I am going with number 2 now storm way to south. areas south of the pike get ready for advisory level snows areas in ct get ready for winter storm watches

  2. Funny always less snow down this way, now we may be in the heavier area, Northern areas not expecting as much.

  3. I think we need to wait and see what happens after this clipper as I think it will influence Saturdays storm.

  4. Sat storm is possibly significant with over 6 inches for areas that usually get less snow get the most, it’s still early but right now it appears Boston west and north get around 3-4 inches while place south of Boston receive again over 6 inches, immediate coast a mix

  5. Thanks TK !!

I’m looking forward to a winter scene tomorrow morning, hopefully it will work out tonight.

I was thinking that about last Sunday evening/Monday morning…the early weather concensus for this Sunday’s game and weekend in general was a warming trend, with low 50s for the game.

Well, obviously, thats not going to happen. Its not the deepest snowcover in the world coming, however, I am skeptical about any future warmups. Outside of Cape Cod and a few miles near the coastline, I think getting warm sectors into New England are going to be a big, big struggle from here on out.

  6. There’s an interesting little area of enhanced snow developing over the eastern tip of Long Island, extending into southern Connecticut. Wonder if thats something to watch.

  7. A nice little snow event tonight. Be careful for anyone who has to travel for slick spots. Saturday I am still sticking with a 1 on the Snow Index since most areas might I don’t think exceed that 4 inch mark. I would not be surprised if winter weather advisories are posted for parts of SNE for that Saturday storm system. Rainorma for Monday with the storm going to our west. Later next week COULD be some wintry precipitation but long way off. The weather will certainly not be boring over the next week.

    1. Saturday should be fun ! I enjoy watching it snow. With work tomorrow, I cant stay up tonight and watch it. So, the idea of snow from mid morning to early evening Saturday sounds good to me. Sit back, watch the grass disappear and everything get covered in white. It should be good.

      1. Mac and I are here Saturday on our own. I won’t have to worry about the kids driving to get here. So we can relax and just watch. I also love just watching.

  8. Right on Tom!! I can’t wait to go out and play! I will take some video and post!!

Big run of the NAM coming up, let’s see where that QPF is at.
JJ if that nam comes in with same QPF as earlier I think we might up to level 2.

    1. Here too Hadi, two kids will be out in the yard. πŸ™‚ Me……nice cup of hot chocolate with the camera.

  9. From Willimantic, CT to New London, CT on the Taunton radar is expanding green radar returns, even a few dark green returns. Maybe a report of moderate to heavy snow on the 9pm obs somewhere…..and a chance at that in the Worcester to Providence corrider around 10pm ?

          1. Oh…..thanks. πŸ™‚

Taunton NWS…….on main page, under radar imagery….. click Taunton, MA…..its showing up on that one nicely.

    1. In the last 23 minutes, Willimantic, CT has reported 4 obs. (Usually, they do 1 per hr). They have had visibility at either 1 mile or 3/4 mile. That is a snow falling at a decent intensity.

  10. And the radar echos are interesting. If one looks at the green echos coming into radar range around Bridgeport, it almost looks like they are moving west to east. But the echos on the CT/RI border are moving north to south. Its almost like there’s a little rotation to the echos. Maybe a mini low ? I thought the models hinted at a second low developing off of the Mass coastline.

    1. Willimantic, CT……1/2 mile, moderate snow….like their 6th or 7th special ob in the last 35 minutes…….Another green echo popping up over Providence……….Interesting, watch out interior southeast Mass….the next few hours could be very interesting !!

    1. Yes…… that area is slowly intensifying and solidifying and from the Willimantic ob, we know its real and reaching the ground……..If you look real close, theres an echo northeast of Willimantic with even a little bit of yellow……

Is it possible we could get a quick 2 or 3 inches around 11 to 1 am ?

  11. That B’s game was very much like the last one in NJ. Spot them a goal then take over later.

  12. ooz NAM for Saturday

    Springfield .30, Worcester .31, Boston .31.

    21z SREF for Saturday

    .25-.29 for the same areas

  13. Worcester and Springfield…which appear to be on the northern edge of that steady precip area…..have 1 mile visibility in light snow….Also, down around Long Island, a few more echos popping up that have some yellows and almost look a bit convective…

    1. Hopefully! the roads will have been treated so your drive won’t be “too” terrible! Good Luck, and stay safe.

  14. Thanks for the numbers JMA. Do you the 18z was too high with QPF? Looks like we are locked around 4 inches in the city for Saturday.

Tom those echos are interesting down in long island. Seems a little further south than I anticipated.

    1. what about south of the city. Is it still looking like it will take the brunt or the storm. Going on to bz now to see if BaileyMan is around.

  15. Providence, RI…..0.75 mile visibility…and I think destined to be under 0.5 mi with a report of moderate or heavy snow soon….

Wouldnt be surprised by a report of a flash of lightning/clap of thunder in southeast Mass next 3 hours or so.

Work tomorrow, heading off. Looking forward to seeing what evolved overnight.

  16. 1.5″ in Coventry, CT and still snowing very lightly. About an inch fell in an hour when the heavier band of snow came through.

0z GFS still looks cold and good for a general 3-5″ Saturday.

  17. Still snowing nicely in Dorchester…landscape beautiful. I got home from work just in time before the “heavy duty” snows moved in and to watch Harvey’s forecast. He is the best when Barry isn’t around.

heavy duty =LOL, but it is considering this winter. πŸ™‚

  18. A few flurries about, but this looks to be about an inch or inch and a half at most in Sherborn. A nice white blanket to fall asleep after. Good night.

  19. Thanks for the reports everybody!

Hope you had fun and stayed safe. Visibility is up big time here in Woburn – the last of the flakes falling now. Heading out to take care of the driveway (easy task this time) and measure in a few moments.

Will probably clean up the forecast and advance it to a new blog entry before I retire for a few hours. πŸ™‚
