Snow Day

9:26AM

Not too often you get a snowstorm fitting neatly into a calendar day, but today is one of those times. A wave of low pressure moving west to east and passing south of New England is the cause.

As of 9AM, the heaviest snow has already fallen in some locations north of the Mass Pike and outside Route 95, though it will continue to snow there for several more hours. Light to moderate snow will continue elsewhere with the 2 to 5 inch amounts easily reached in most locations. Some 6 to even 7 inch totals are still possible mainly in areas south of the Mass Pike where heaviest snow lasts longer, and where some enhancement takes place from moisture off the ocean (especially closer to the South Shore). To the north, under 2 inches will fall near the MA/NH border. This is a light and fluffy snow for just about everybody (except a little wetter over Cape Cod). This should be a done deal by tonight as the wave of low pressure heads into the Atlantic and high pressure again builds north of New England.

The remainder is from the previous discussion followed by an updated Boston area forecast.

Sunday, high pressure will continue to hold on to the north of the region, sending a northeast wind into southern New England. This may produce some ocean-effect snow showers. As the high pressure area slides more to the southeast an approaching warm front will provide focus for moisture and warmer air to ride over New England, and with lingering cold air at the ground, the setup for some icing will be in place as rain breaks out due to the warming air aloft. Icing may linger into Monday morning over inland areas where cold air can be tough to dislodge. Areas closer to the coast will warm sufficiently so that plain rain will be falling by Monday morning. Eventually, all inland areas will warm to above freezing so that Monday turns into a rainy day for just about the entire region. Once a cold front crosses the region from west to east Monday night or early Tuesday, drier weather will move in, but this may prompt someone to argue the definition of a cold front since Tuesday will probably turn out to be the warmest day of the next several days. A secondary cold front late Tuesday will introduce colder air for the middle of next week.

  1. Thank’s TK- What time would you say is the height of the storm and heavier precip to move in here. The snow here is coming down light right now, though everything is covered. If it is to snow light like this I would think tough to get the higher amounts as forcasted.

    1. It depends on where you are. There are several moderate bands (typical for this kind of setup). I’ve had moderate snow here for almost 2 hours and will soon be closing in on 2 inches.

It looks to me like the storm, overall, is at peak now. Trends on radar already show a slight SE nudge to the snow area, though light snow extends quite a way back upstream so I believe snow will continue to fall for another 5 to 6 hours.

      1. Pembroke TK on the south shore. Tom or coastal your thoughts.
I thought it would come down harder than this.

        1. The heavier bands have been all around you. Pembroke has been in a slight snow hole. πŸ™‚ Another moderate to nearly heavy band is passing north of you in the 10AM hour.

          1. I thought i saw a hole way back when I first looked at the radar at 7:00. It has picked up a bit here. Wind seems to be from N NE.

  2. Thanks for the update TK. Be careful for anyone who has to travel this morning into the afternoon with those slippery road conidtions. Least snow in the north. Most snow in the south. In a normal winter this would not be that big a deal but considering the winter we have had this is. Rainorma Monday but watch for some icing inland and maybe mixed wintry precipitation late next week.
Does that blizzard prediction the OFA predicted for the 30-31st of this month have any chance of being right???

    1. I would not put any money on that OFA forecast for the end of the month. And I hope it’s wrong anyway. I am bringing one car to the mechanic on January 30 and a second car on January 31 to take care of regular and minor maintenance. πŸ™‚

  3. Snow went from moderate to light here in Woburn. One more enhanced area trying to move up my way but I believe we have seen the heaviest in the NW suburbs already.

  4. Thank you TK. John how is your wife today ?

I’d it snows for 5-6 more hours like this it doesn’t seem to me we will be near what was expected. It’s taken 3 hrs to get to somewhere shy of 2 inches (that’s a guess as to amount)

    1. This never looked like much, hence the 2-5 range carried throughout, with minor tweaks made for N & S closer to event. I’m figuring to come in around 2 or just over that here (Woburn) when it’s all done.

    1. we’re going to be on the extreme northern edge of that band the next couple hours. Looking at the radar loop, the green echos are trying to get into our area. I wonder if, though it doesnt look like greens to our west, that the south shore will fill in the next couple of hours. Visibility down some the last half hour with fairly moderate snow in eastern Marshfield.

        1. True……it looks nice though, I’d say about 2 inches new and close to 6 on the ground from Thursday night and today.

        2. Makes for a fun lazy day and it’s great to watch. May not be a blockbuster but I’m having a blast :).

Are both playoff games tomorrow? I know pats at 3:00. Is other at nite?

  5. Decided to venture out in the car. Pike not all that clear — slick. Main city streets — slick. Side streets, not even plowed yet.

    1. Husband was going to head out but we don’t know how they plow here and it’s not like being home so I discouraged it. Interesting that pike isn’t clear

      1. Pembroke does a decent job, I’m sure scituate does as well. Vicki both game tomorrow. Second game should be going by 6-6:30. I believe they change every year for the time AFC/NFC. Yes lazy day I just lit fire. Nice to be not working the storm.

        1. SUVs? Sorry to those who have 4 wheel drive. I know not one person on this blog has the “I have four wheel drive and am invincible” mind set since everyone here truly appreciates weather. But…….

Now sliding down off my soap box

  6. Wimporama!! lol

Well so much for that. Looks like sun is trying to peek through. Fairly bright out.
Have not been out to shovel yet, so can’t say how much has fallen, but it doesn’t look
like much. Hadi had mention about 3 inches? Doesn’t look like it to me. Looking like
2 tops here. I’ll get a measurement after lunch when I head out for errands.

  7. I think We can all agree this thing was a dud, even more on south shore. Snow is falling lighter now. This storm was way overdone for here. But even this morning we were to take the hit down here, just not sure how it turned out this way. I think the only thing that went right was the start time.

      1. Just a guess I would say maybe 2inches. Before you say anything I know It was in the 3-7 zone. But even this morning
most mets were saying should at least get 6inches here. Snow here is light now. Never really saw an intense burst come through.

        1. You were in a 2-5 zone according to me. Everybody was (with the isolated heavier amounts south of the pike). You’ll get about another 1/2 inch.

            1. maybe on someone’s, but I had broadbrush 2-5 with locally 6 (added 7 later) south of the Pike.

  8. Southern CT and Long Island who have winter storm warnings is where the bullesye is for this storm system.
Cold dry air from the north pushed this low pressure system a little bit further south.

      1. Deepest snowcover and best refrigerant in far southern New England. πŸ™‚ Looking forward to Monday and seeing this surface cold air – impressive warm surge battle.

          1. It does have access to our area vs the ocean…so I think Cape Ann, Boston, south shore and Cape will get into mildness. But inland, I dont know……some of the mild air is going to be used melting the 6 inches of snow on the ground down here.

  9. I would not be surprised to hear 6 7 inch amounts coming out across parts of Soutern CT.
Anyone knows anyone with travel plans into Atlanta its going to be no picnic with a tornado watch down there and a tornado and severe thunderstorm warning inside that watch box.

  10. Next Friday……the 27th. Ideas of some energy breaking off the Northwest US/western Canada coast…..coming over a slight ridge out west and then southeast through the Great Lakes and towards the northeast. I dont know how that will turn out, but I think its a Watcher !!!!

  11. New Bedford and Newport, RI ….. 1/4 mile in S+…….. Many other reporting stations on immediate south coast 1/2 mile in moderate snow.

  12. I know the a few days ago the NWS was saying that storm system for late next week could be similar to the one we are having right now. For sure keep an eye on that one. Monday is a rainorma but could be a little icy for the interior before the transtition to rain.

  13. Rte . 95 in southernmost CT must be a nightmare. That thing is slow, packed and hard to drive in good weather.

  14. OS it’s not heavy but it’s adding up since I cleared its about another 1.3. I have measured twice now and I would close to 4 total.

    1. Very…..gone is the groundhog day warm surge, replaced by general trofiness. If that Alaska cold and trof could retrograde a little more to help build the downstream ridge some in the western US….we might be in serious business…….. As early as next Friday….intensifying clipper south of us ??

    1. Yes !!!! NYC is reporting sleet and I wonder if a few of those yellows might be reflections off of sleet pellets. With that said, many reports of S and S+ down there.

  15. Keep seeing pulses of very light snow, then steadier snow. Right now in steadier snow, with lower visibility. Its a very, very fine snow….almost like thick drizzle and the wind has come up towards 10 mph, so getting some flying off the roof as well. Very unusual to see powdery snow here.

        1. I was just going by the tv mets for down here. We may be closing in on 3 but they seemed to think higher amounts down this way.Snow has picked up a bit more.

          1. Yes, increasing in intensity and gotten darker as well. Getting close to heart of warm air advection snows (I think) which may help to intensify snow a bit to the north of the main band in far southern areas.

  16. This could have been alot worse, storm went south by 30 miles, I was in the 4-7 inch zone and I have about 2 maybe 2 in a half inches, the snow will end over the next hr or 2 max

  17. It does appear the storm went just south enough to put the heavier snows along the coast of conn and RI, the back edge is coming through Worcester and pressing south and east

  18. I have just under 3 inches as of 1:00pm and snowing lightly, we will end up here in Bristol cty of between 3-4 inches

  19. I think there may be one more burst for the Boston area. Northeast, CT is back in the green echos and there’s a band near Springfield to Worcester that seems to be getting a little bit of life to it. Sustaining steady, light snow in Marshfield….of greater intensity the last 30 to 45 minutes.

  20. I take that back, we have just over 2 inches here, we will end of with around 3 inches, snow will end around 2 pm 3pm the latest

  21. Contrast our weather with that of central Georgia…which has a line of intense thunderstorms, temps in the 70s and dewpoints just south of the cold front in the mid 60s.

  22. Snowing in Newton still. Not heavy but steady.

Thought next Friday would be a rain event, now I am not sure.

  23. it has been a steady light snow and i have about 2 inches of snow. Looks nice out there I have about 4 to 5 inches inches out on the ground now between the two storms. The hill has powder on it again there are more kids than I though would be using it today. there was no wind this time around so the marshland did not make more snow fall in my back yard which it usually does in storms. sadly all of this will be gone by tuesday or wednesday. I am heading to wachusett to have some runs tonight with the fresh powder.Does anyone know how the roads are like rt 2

  24. heat mizer has been winning this winter and I guess snow mizer has won out until monday. then heat miser wants in. I do not think he will be in for long. He will just melt all the snow that snow miser has gave us this past week and today. Possible storm friday looks interisting. LET THE BATTLE BEGIN!

  25. Seems wind has picked up considerably – snow blown off driveway and deck and road in spots. Still snowing lightly but steadily. We will go for a beach walk soon but we are watching Moneyball – GREAT story.

  26. Snowing as hard as it has all storm, bigger flakes in with the fine stuff too. Last hour has been very productive and next hour looks good for south shore too. Thinking were going to end up with btwn 5 to 6 inches, and close to 10 on the ground.

  27. 12z Euro right now shows a good 6″ snowfall for SNE on Friday…another fast mover with a similar track to today’s storm. Definitely something to watch!

Disappointed w/ the snow here in northern CT. Just measured 2.5″ and it has pretty much tapered off. Some towns literally just 10-15 miles south of me have come in with 6-7″!

  28. And look at 2 or 3 days later…it takes another clipper and bombs it out off the coast of Maine….986 to 974mb up in eastern Canada.

I wont get caught up in the details….but, its the general big picture idea its painting today that I like. Hopefully that big picture idea gets repetitive runs the next couple of days.

  29. NAO is now neutral and is expected to go negative for next week, which would help slow down any storms.
The AO is also supposed to tank, and the PNA is going positive.
Signs are that there will be another episode of sudden Stratospheric warming in the next 10 days.
All those signs make the current model outputs quite reliable.

  30. Snow has just stopped, about 3.5 inches here in N.Attleboro, was in Foxboro they got about 3 inches, jackpot seems like Providence and southward were up to 5 and 6 inches fell.

  31. Very light snow falling in Sudbury – you have to look hard to find it. We went out for a little walk earlier, when it was snowing moderately. It was nice. Couldn’t make a snowball because snow is so light and fluffy. Rain or snow, it appears that the weather pattern has changed in the past few weeks. And, if there is still a good snowpack in places, no matter how mild it gets on Mon., will any precip. turn to all rain?

  32. Tried a beach walk but it was short lived – wind is whipping out of N/NE and drives snow into your face. Still fine moderate snow. I’d say about 3.5-4 inches here but don’t have my board or even a ruler.

If you do not know the story behind the movie moneyball I would strongly recommend you DO NOT read about it. I suspect it would ruin a good portion of the movie. If you do know the story, it is still a great move – IMHO. It’s what baseball should be.

  33. Last of the snows pushing into the eastern parts of SNE. Looks like Friday is a watcher for POTENTIAL wintry weather.
The 36-37 winter of 9.1 inches I more confident will stand as the least snowiest on record.

  34. Just came in from errands. Had to drive over to Newton. Rt. 9 was clear.
most roads fine. Some side roads slippery.

Measured 3.25 inches here in JP. Did a bunch of measurements. Had ranges from 3-3.5, so took 3.25 as a reasonable amount.

BTW, took a drive by Jamaica Pond. STILL only about 25-30% Ice covered.
    Not there yet.

  35. Wind is really picking up – blew some chairs off deck that withstood the wind last week. We just opened the door against the wind to pull my husband’s beer off the deck and he had to push hard to even get the door open.

  36. Well, the area that got the most snow…..probably has the best chance at getting into the mild air later Monday and with some rain, can it be long before the flood watches are hoisted ? I ask that somewhat seriously, because I’m guessing there’s about .75 to 1 inch of water equivalent on the ground south of Boston btwn Thursday night and today….though I do suppose it has been somewhat of a dry autumn and early winter.

    1. Hi Tom – do you know if the tide is expected to be higher than normal tonight? The ocean is really churningup – I think low tide was somewhere around now or maybe a bit ago.

The snow is literally going parallel to the land – now this is FUN

      1. Hi Vicki. Normal tide tonight, with big waves. Fairly large astronomical tide tomorrow morning….10 am. Large midday tides thru Wednesday with new moon Monday.

I can hear the wind outside. I’ll bet its even more ferocious right on the water. Must be a good snowdrift down there somewhere and places where the snow has been completely blown away.

        1. Oh good. Morning is a fun time since we can see it. Thanks Tom. Tons of drifting. Can’t tell if it’s still snowing but there’s no way to measure since it’s all blown. I’ll be only one enjoying it mon thru wed. Mac has thurs and fri off tho and we go home on 29th πŸ™

            1. Not really. It’s been long enough that it’ll be nice but it’s been so nice being here. I do love this area of yours

                1. John I didn’t recognize the name. We went to statuit tavern several times last summer and enjoyed it. I would like to do this next year. There is a peace about this place. And it has many memories of my parents and brother – it’s all special

    1. Your right. And those southern parts of Plymouth. I did not measure but I would guess we had maybe 5inches, I suspect you may agree Coastal. I still thought we would get the seven here as most were thinking closer to the six inches even this morning. Did you hear the same Coastal. For some reason Tk thought 2-5 but I always saw the 3-7 I think.

      1. When we melt all this down, the errors were not large at all, at the ratios that took place today.

          1. Oh trust me I do not always do a fine job. πŸ™‚

I was decently happy with this, but disappointed in missing the South Coast slam.

            1. I thought you had said a potential south coast large amt. I suspect 5ish here too. They just plowed. Go figure. My daughter said the plow went over our very short street at home six times Friday morning and haven’t plowed at all today. That’s framingham.

              1. I had an all time favorite in Scituate and I am sure you have been plenty of times, Pier44. That was a great place to go.

  37. Pete is not sold yet on next fri/sat storm. But said he will keep the chance of precip rain/snow in forcast. Also said the cape was a surprise no one saw that coming.

  38. TK and BB did a great job forecasting this storm. I feel good about the general 2-5″ the call 3 days ago that this was not a big storm for Boston Metro, the call last night to delay onset of precip. I completely blew the synoptic bands down south. Just did not see it happening there. The location of these mesoscale features are the hardest thing to predict in any type of event. I just totally failed here in that regard, but overall the forecast for the vast majority of New England verified.

  39. I just spoke w/ my brother in Yarmouth and he said they received close to foot. Lucky him!! He also mentioned w/ temps were right around 32ish, treated roads are down to pavement.

  40. A missed forcast is not the end of the world. All of you who say you missed are very, very skilled at keeping us informed. Thank you.

      1. Huh? I was just on deck. No snow here. But with the wind could have blown right by. Tide pretty darn high. My husband laughed when I was sitting on deck. Thinks I’m certifiable. he’s right

  41. TK and JMA I thought you both did a really nice job with the forecast, not one person thought we would exceed a foot in places so that was missed by everyone. Fair haven came in at 12.5!! Lucky dogs!!

  42. JMA I thought BB was behind the eight ball on this storm, he tweeted last night about how little snow we would get.

          1. A colon and close parenthesis. : )

No space between. As far as seeing whose awake. I tend to get even πŸ˜‰

  43. So I see PeteB on news tonight saying he doesn’t have much confidence in a storm next weekend, which is fine. But this is the same PB who told me on twitter 2 days ago that is was going to rain today bc he was looking at off run of the nam. Like they say on MNF “come on man”.

  44. With the final total at Logan of 2.9″ brings Boston’s total snowfall so far at 7.6″.

    1. 7.6″ = 2011-12*
    2. 9.0″ = 1936-37
    3.10.3″= 1972-73

I had to work today so I could not really enjoy the storm. It was tough walking going and coming home. That snow was impressive in terms of sticking to surfaces almost immediately. I underestimated the amounts and did not wear boots…quite stupid of me. I shoveled when I returned home in no time at all thanks to fluff factor.

      1. If we did a season to date color analyzed total snowfall analysis….including the October storm, there’d be a little shade of color representing the smallest amount of snow to date and it would go right over
Boston and its western most suburbs…..who didnt quite get the full effects of either the October storm or the last 2 events (Thursday night and yesterday).

  45. 1:55 gain today on daylight in Boston. We are 30 days beyond the winter solstice and have used up nearly all of the very short solar length days. Light gain will be very noticeable going forward.

  46. January 22nd and July 22nd are climatologically the coldest and warmest days of the year and these last 2 dates have not disappointed.

    July 21 and 22, 2o11 : High at Logan of 97F and 103F respectively.

January 21, 2012 : Temp spends day mostly in the teens with snow.

  47. Both the EURO and GFS are trending towards jet stream phasing next weekend but have different takes on how that would effect storm track. Will be fun to watch their take on that during the next 3 to 4 days.

  48. Is this the Patriots’ blog? I’m in the right place, aren’t I? It’s 7 am and I am already a trainwreck — and the game doesn’t start ’til 3.

  49. Nice Sunday to get out and enjoy the snow because a lot of it if not all of it is going to wash away with the rain tomorrow.
Would not be surprised if a winter weather advisory is up for parts of the interior overnight into Monday morning since there could be some icing. It won’t be a lot of icing but it does not take much to make things slippery.
Two more POTENTIAL storm systems after that. The Thursday night Friday looks like a weak storm system with mixed wintry precipitation and the second one a lot of questions marks but at this early stage I would favor mixed wintry precipitation.
I think the Pats Ravens game is going to be close. If Brady does not get any pressure from that Ravens defense it is going to be a long game for the Ravens. I have said Baltimore was the best team in the AFC and I can’t back down now. With that said I think were looking at 20-17 game. On the NFC side weather looks to be a factor. It is a much different Giants team this time that came into San Francisco in November. On the other side Alex Smith came through big last week against the Saints and the 49ers have confidence. I am thinking a 27-24 game.

  50. 424 AM EST SUN JAN 22 2012 HIGHLIGHTS…
    * COLD FRONT THRU THE FCST RGN FOR MON NGT WITH BLUSTERY CONDITIONS
    * HIGH PRES AND DRY WEATHER TUE THRU WED
    * WEAK STORM S OF THE FCST AREA THURS NGT INTO FRI
    * A STRONG STORM SYS FOR THE WEEKEND?
Is there possibilty of another weekend snow event? I sure hope winter is finally beginning to settle in for the duration. Then again, with temps almost in the 50’s this week, it’s a long shot.

  51. I would say temps around 50 only in Tuesday. A little cooler in wednesday, I do not see prolonged 50’s this week at all.

    1. Poor wording on my part, Hadi. I meant only for a day or two. I sure do hope the temps go down and significantly, too! Hopefully… in time for the weekend event.

  52. What a beautiful morning. Sun and clouds and huge waves and wind blown snow – doesn’t get better on a winter Sunday morning!!! Good morning everyone πŸ™‚

    1. Agreed !! Just outside moving cars so friend can plow our driveway. There’s quite a bit of snow on the ground !! Tomorrow night and Tuesday are going to be slush city !!

Trust your looking at quite a high tide right around now.

      1. Very high tide. Active waves. Snow blew off our car and driveway. Mac said that’s how it should always work

  53. We got about 2 or 3 inches here in Billerica. we have about 4 inches on the ground right now. its all goingto melt monday night and tuesday. Many areas will keep there snow pack until later in the week and by then there is a chance of an other storm that looks to make a more northerly track to give you guys that got slamed durring the last storm a mix while areas up here could get the most snow. πŸ™‚

today sunny highs in the low 30s
tonight cloudy with lows in the low 20s
monday cloudy chance of morning ice( sleet and freezing rain) then a chance of a few showers late highs in the upper 30s
monday night cloudy with evening rain lows in the upper 30s
tuesday sunny, breezy and warm highs in the upper 40s
tuesday night clear lows in the low 30s
wednesday sunny highs in the upper 30s
wednesday night clear lows in the mid 20s
thursday sunny highs in the low 40s and upper 30s
thursday night mostly cloudy with lows in the upper 20s chance of snow and sleet
friday a chance of snow ,sleet and freezing rain mainly in the morning highs in the mid 30s
friday night cloudy lows in the upper 20s
saturday Possible nor-easter /possible major event interior.mostly cloudy chance of snow, freezing rain, sleet and rain highs in the upper 30s. (watch it closely)

I also went skiing last night and it was pure powder. If anyone else is on here that goes to wachusett, i highly recomend going today as this week will probably kill it. Also My Dad ,2 brothers and myself got free ski lift tickets. The main lift broke down and someone took my brothers skies but left there own which is in better shape.

  54. A quiet weather day here today but could be the first big severe weather outbreak of the season for parts of the south today.

  55. The GFS has backed off on next weekend’s storm, while the 00z EURO showed an inland runner. Fasten your seat belts, these model runs are going to be wild.

  56. UGH Meter low at a 2 since so much could change. Will see what the 12zEURO has to say but clearly a classic battle of the models.

  57. 12z EURO shows a decent snowfall for next weekend, much colder than the 00z EURO.
Way too much uncertainty at this point as the models are all over the place.

  58. EXACTLY one hour until kickoff! I believe “technically” 3:05 pm is when the actual kickoff takes place. The networks are always in complete control as we all know. πŸ˜‰

  59. Philip I hate this waiting. I remember years back during the playoffs the game was 1 and 4. Now its 3 and 6:30 for championship Sunday and 4:30 and 8:00 for the Saturday divisional games and wild card games on Saturday when those used to be 12:30 and 4:00 games.

    1. I hate that the super bowl is so late. It’s tough for us to have friends who live a ways away. Just makes it too late to drive home on a work night. Here we go. I’m a wreck

  60. Patroits on the board 1st with a field goal. There defense looks good so far. Very fortunate with that penalty on the Ravens otherwise that would have been a turnover for the Patriots.

    1. That was just bad luck with the schedule, for the 2nd week in a row. And even worse luck that both games for the Bruins are road games, or you can be sure the time would have been changed.

    1. The one thing last week you had a rookie QB with the Texans who made some rookie mistakes.
      Tie game.

      1. and the Texans punt returner…..who fumbled the punt return with Texans up 3-0. Gave Ravens the ball on like the 15 yd line.

  61. This start is a little reminiscent of last years Jets-Pats games. Pats kind of dominated 10 minutes of both games and couldnt get a substantial lead.

    1. Green Ellis is incredible. He was very lucky the helmet came off too. Cld have been seriously hurt. No idea why they keep giving it to woodhead. Where is Ridley. Nice that green Ellis tapped MLK patch after score

  62. Pats won toss and deferred to get the ball at the start of the 3rd. Would be great if they could score on this drive.

    1. That’s actually painful. I’m a wreck and just watching one game. Brady needs to get his act together

  63. The Week Ahead will be out soon…

    Teaser for now:

Icing inland tomorrow morning but saving grace may be just drizzle instead of rain. Slippery surfaces but no big accretion on trees/wires.

    50+ Tuesday?

    Chilly midweek.

Unsettled end of week, maybe a snow threat or 2.

    Go B’s! Go Pats!

    1. Also, faithful readers who may be interested in meeting up sometime, let me know what location and day of week / time of day might work. I want to set something up in the not-too-distant future.

  64. First our defense forgot to come back from half. Second. What was with guy who scored TD holding onto the pats players face mask. How does a ref miss that.

  65. freezing rain advisory up from midnight tonight to 10am for freezing drizzle and light freezing rain. until 10am.

        1. Never heard of it. But one possibility. We won’t really come up with a date until we hear from everyone interested in meeting up.

      1. Tom as y9u know Williams was a friend of my family. I know you all all think I’m off my rocker – maybe somewhat – but in 2004 I had an overwhelming sense that he was watching over the Sox and there was no question they’d win the series. I sort of thought my mom had a hand in it too. When green-ellis touched his MLK patch I had the same weird sense about tonights game with Myra watching as I did in 2004. Guess we can smile and credit our moms in both cases! Well – also a great team πŸ™‚

  66. How about that almost touchdown with 15 sec left that got ripped out of the Ravens receiver’s arms and……

Come on Giants !!! Got to have another shot at them.

    1. I’m rooting for SF. My SIL said months ago bowl would be SF and Pats. Also BIL lives in SF. Of giants win won’t mind since I’d live to face them again. I’m glad to just relax and enjoy this game

      1. Don’t be sorry. TK loves sports. Being able to also talk sports
here makes this blog great. Many sports fans here.

      2. Vicki… I have no issue with the sports talk on a day like this! It was great. πŸ™‚

        We’re a family here.

        1. That’s why I told her to not be sorry, I knew you would come back with that. And I agree with your last words. Keep up the good work. Who was in net for bruins.

          1. I am also rooting for SF. Not sure why, I did love montana as a kid. But In the end pats made it so we play who we play.

      1. OK, back to the weather everyone. In the Boston area, do you think the freezing rain will affect the morning commute? And what about that tornado warning down south–it extends to New Orleans–I’m a Katrina survivor so I watch their weather as well.

          1. It was crazy–we were getting my son settled in at Tulane, because Katrina was hitting Florida and there were no worries. And the rest is indeed history. It took us 5 days to get out, but we landed on our feet.

        1. Echoing John, don’t think it’s a big issue except a few sidewalks, stairs, and possibly secondary roads.

  67. Some potential severe weather down south this evening.

Wonder how bad ice will be around here in morning.

I am interested in a meet-up at some time. I know Hadi has mentioned it – is anyone else interested?

    1. I am interested too.

TK back to weather. Will ice be bad on the rt 3 to 93/95 commute into watertown. The stress od being here is worrying about a commute we are not familiar with. John was great and got mac on 3 by 5:20

      1. I don’t think the highways will suffer much, because it looks more like a freezing drizzle than a heavier freezing rain, and with some advanced warning I would bet those roads are pre-treated.

I think it’s only sidewalks, stairs, and some secondary roads over inland areas that may be a bit dangerous for the first half of the morning.

  68. The Indy stadium has a retractable roof. I assume we might need a weather forecast for 6:30 PM (EST) on Feb 5th.

  69. Great game earlier. Billy Cundiff field goal try looked like my golf shot to the left. It reminded me of the Colts kicker Mike VanderJact and I probably did not spell the last name right kick who was way too the left in a playoff game against the Steelers. Congrats to the Pats. Hopefully we have a great NFC championship game and a great Super Bowl.

  70. Wow! What a day! I am drained…

Not sure if I want a NYG rematch or not…

Hoping for a quiet commute tomorrow.

    Tj

  71. I would not want the giants with that D right now. Pats were downright lucky to get that win today.

About meet up I picked legacy place bc it’s right off the hwy and central location from north or south.

    1. Works for me. Where is it. Do we bring spouses? I’m a chicken driving to places I don’t know. This from someone who owned and raced muscle cars. Darn it’s tough getting old πŸ™‚

    2. Both teams made plenty of mistakes today. In the end Baltimore made more. I am glad thing’s worked out. But that game should have went into overtime, that was an easy kick for a kicker who has been around.

    1. In the NFL, you have to make those kicks. You just have to make critical/key plays when they come up. The league is so competitive that the margin for error in all games especially playoff games is small.

Agree with Hadi, the Pats had some luck on their side.

  72. My son’s friend had a question last night. What year did the NFL start. I know this will be the 46th superbowl, is that when it started.

  73. John, it started in 1920 with another name and then it changed its name to the NFL in like 1923 or so. You can probably Google it.

    1. I believe good teams find a way to win. As JJ said the defense put pressure on the kicker. Brady was off today, and in his own words he sucked today and defense saved them. The defense made some very good key plays today. The defense as we know is not that good, but have been making the key plays at the right time.

      1. Very true. The defense is ranked at the bottom, but despite that the Pats’ D has been stingy with points; very stingy in the Red Zone; and somehow makes the big play on critical downs.

        1. Last thing I say on the pats tonight heading to bed. Pats win the superbowl this year. I think they match up well
against either of these two playing now. If they play Giants the pats very good at getting even/payback. Also
we know the offense was off today, when that happens they almost alway’s come back on fire. Go Pats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
