No Major Cold, No Major Snow Remainder Of January

4:40PM

After a slight bit more persistence to the wintry feel last week, we have returned to the pattern of milder than normal, brief cold shots, and no major snow threats that I am pretty confident will last through the remaining 8 days of January.

A frontal system will push west to east across New England tonight and early Tuesday morning as its parent low pressure area moves across southern Canada. High pressure builds into the region for midweek with dry and chilly weather, but no major cold. Several disorganized low pressure areas will be around at the end of the week, and at this point I’m still not sure how things happen down to the letter, but it looks like we’ll be affected by one weak low bringing enough mild air for a light snow to rain event late Thursday night and Friday, a weak storm offshore but possibly close enough for light snow/mix on Saturday, and upper level low pressure from the west bringing a snow shower threat for Sunday. Check back for more detail on the end of the week and for now just take my low confidence forecast with a grain of salt.

Boston Area Forecast…

TONIGHT: Cloudy. Areas of fog. Periods of rain showers. Temperature rising through the 40s. Wind SE under 10 MPH shifting to SW up to 15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy early, then partly to mostly sunny. High 47-52. Wind SW 10-20 MPH with gusts to 25 MPH, shifting to W.

TUESDAYΒ  NIGHT: Partly cloudy with a slight chance of a rain or snow shower early, then mostly clear. Low 25-30. Wind W 10-20 MPH with gusts to 25 MPH shifting to NW.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. High 37-42. Wind NW 10-20 MPH.

THURSDAY: Sunshine, late clouds, light snow/mix late night. Low 22. High 37.

FRIDAY: Cloudy. Light rain early. Low 35. High 45.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of light snow/mix. Low 30. High 40.

SUNDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of snow showers. Low 25. High 35.

  1. Many thanks for the update TK.

    Btw, on a different note:

    Btw,

Drove down 95 through RI into SE Ct Saturday evening.
Could REALLY notice the accumulation build after about Providence.

Roads were AOK by the time we ventured out.

      1. Me too !! Didnt seem to happen as often in Merrimack Valley….but from east end of town to west end of town in Marshfield (about 5 miles) can be unbelievably different.

      1. At this point, I am thinking that the 3-4 inches we saw on Saturday, is the best we’re going to do for the ENTIRE Winter.
        Lol

  2. TK, thanks for the update. About what time would the snow be starting on Thurs.? I have to drive to Waltham in the afternoon. I know it won’t be a big storm but I am wondering if the roads might be slippery? Thanks.

  3. They cannot take these past 2 weekends away from us. I’m grateful for that. At least, it felt like winter. But, good gracious, another week with temperatures approaching 50 and yes, it looks like this could happen again at the end of next week. This is a winter person’s nightmare. I didn’t feel like running this morning. I’ll go tomorrow, reluctantly. But, I will sorely miss the clean, fresh, arctic air. By comparison, a bright and sunny 15 degree morning blows away a damp, gray, and dismal 40. I thought and hoped a pattern change was in the offing, alas, it appears that this was merely wishful thinking. I’m getting reports from up north (from my daughter) that business is way, way down at many of the ski resorts. They had some snow this past week, but today and tomorrow’s temperatures will melt that base away. Cross-country trails have been practically shut down all winter. Sad.

    1. That is the very very sad aspect of a virtually snowless Winter.
People’s livelihood depend on the Snow. At least if they get adequate snow
up North, it doesn’t matter too much down here. But this season it is no
good up North as well. Very very sad.

  4. CPC looks like they are starting to get bored of drawing the same 6-10 and 8-14 day outlooks every day. πŸ˜‰

  5. warmer week ahead then maybe back to normal temperatures.
weekend storm looks to be a no show but looks to allow temps to dip to normal.

  6. 85,96,01,03,04,07,11 Go Patriots!!! I’ve been a fan since 1985, the dynasty continues 2001- ????. What a great Sunday

  7. This is not weather related, but I have been looking at my posts lately and I have a bad habit of hyphenating a lot (e.g. It is sunny out – what a nice day.) If that is irritating to anyone let me know and I will try not to do it anymore.

      1. Thanks, TK! πŸ™‚ I really don’t know why I do it. No, I want to put a hyphen there but I won’t do it! πŸ™‚

        1. I’m not looking back at my posts. I hate to think what I do. I never pay attention to others other than what they say. I always enjoy reading your posts since we are “neighbors “

  8. Not here rainshine!! My typing on the iPhone drives me nuts bc overall I am decent speller but the phone makes me look like I need to go back to 5th grade!

    1. Thanks, Hadi. I have been hyphenating a long time but I just noticed it and it irritated me how I am typing – and I am on a desktop! I’ll try to change a little, anyway. And no, I don’t talk like I write! πŸ™‚

  9. winter wise……2 steps forward, 19 steps back. It feels like spring down here this evening….even have the spring mist falling. Snow is melting quick. One good part, we can park a car back on the street.

  10. Some sun stats….. (courtesy of Taunton NWS sun and moon data……

Tomorrow, in Boston, the length of day (for sunlight) increases by just over 2 minutes.

Every 4 days now, the sun climbs one degree higher in the sky.

Tomorrow, the sun will have climbed a total of 4 degrees higher in the sky since the solstice……With a rapid meltdown of whatever snow is left tonight…..mild starting temps tomorrow morning and some of that strengthening sun tomorrow afternoon, I wonder how far above 50F the high temps could go…….

  11. Tim Thomas was a “no-show” at the White House today…his choice. πŸ™

But what about the old saying…There’s no “I” in Team?

    1. I was surprised. Regardless of your political feelings, I should think you would show up with the team.

  12. I guess the OFA prediction for a blizzard next Monday and Tuesday is not going to happen. Rainorma for the coast and areas near it Thursday night Friday mixed wintry precipitation the further inland you are.

  13. I have plenty of typing habits. No need to edit your own. You probably have noticed I over-use smiley faces. But that’s a reflection of my real personality so for me it’s ok.

      1. Well no surprise, just another thing in common between Vicki and the admin of WHW. πŸ˜›

  14. Thanks for all the comments – because I am kind of a writer(still not published)I tend to edit my own stuff. Even when I was working at my job a few yrs. ago I would always double or triple check my work. Maybe I am a little too compulsive at times.

And I like using smiley-faces a lot, too. Definitely part of my personality, too – I love to laugh. πŸ™‚

    1. That’s astounding! I’ve been there (hiked up Tuckerman’s, Huntington, Boott Spur, and Lion’s Head) many times in July and August with the temperatures in the low and mid 30s. My daughter is in Bretton Woods where the normal low in January is 1. They’ve reached that low 5 times this month (just twice in December!) and will likely not revisit that temperature until February. 40 and sunny tomorrow in Bretton Woods. That’s just plain weird! I know I’m sounding like a broken record – and believe me, I know what they sound like because I still play records! – but this winter is just so incredibly bizarre. I hate it.

      1. It has been a broken record type of winter. I thought for sure things were turning a bit this past week. It is clear I am wrong.

  15. Speaking of mistakes I am the worst speller on here. And still don’t have that smile thing down. Just got in and boy that fog tonight is bad. Just driving home they were talking about the Thomas no show. I don’t know why he chose not to go. But unless he had a realy good reason, he should of been there with his coach and teamates. And one more mentoin of sports. There was alot of Monday morning Quarterbacking going on. The pats played a dog fight of a game. The kind of game where whoever has the ball last should win, in which Baltimore almost did. The pats earned there spot in the superbowl thank’s to there defense. Good teams pigyback off of each other, when one unit is not at its best the other needs to pick it up. That is what happened yesterday, defense won that game plain and simple. And that’s what good teams do they find a way to win period. I know the pats will bring there a game on super Sunday. This will be another dog fight game as Giants are red hot. But I don’t see It by 3, maybe by 10 pats.

      1. Thomas did not go reportedly for political reasons, but I agree he should have been there with coaches and teammates. As for the Pats, they will have to bring a better offense to the SB.

        1. Yes I am getting caught up with Thomas. Hate to say it but he caused a distraction to his team. Pats will show up trust me. Brady has two weeks to sit with his bad outing. History shows he always bounces back after a bad game. I am wearing my hat.

      2. John…now that the Pats are back in the Super Bowl….I am somewhat “torturing” myself by watching the replay of the Pats – Giants Super Bowl from 4 yrs ago which is on the NFL Network. The good news…with no disrespect intended to them, the Pats tight ends were Ben Watson and Kyle Brady. The bad news, the Giants have a much better offense this year. Better receivers and I think Eli is playing at a higher level.

        1. Giants are red hot Tom right now. But I truly believe the pats can win this game. You will be going insane if you keep watching that game. How many times will that be showing. Brady always bounces back. team in good health, revenge and two weeks of rest and film study.

          1. LOL…….Pats are about to take lead…I will turn it off then and ignore the end of the game……I certainly think Pats can win. Imagine they beat Eli on Peyton’s home field.

    1. I’m glad I can turn down an invite and not get grilled on the radio for it. πŸ™‚ An invite is an invite, I don’t care if it’s from the President, who we elected, Bob the Builder, my uncle, or the pizza delivery guy. It’s always up to me whether or not I accept it. Tim has his reasons, and I respect his decision.

      1. I agree TK. But he should have zipped it as to why he did not want to go. You know I love Thomas, but he caused a distraction
        to his team.

        1. I meant ‘we’ as a country… πŸ˜‰

And I’m glad he didn’t zip it about why. He just made himself a perfect example of what this country was founded on: Freedom.

The Bruins organization can be disappointed in his decision but the are also obligated to respect it. And if they don’t, shame on them. Tim Thomas caused NOBODY any harm by making the personal choice he did. And as it turns out, I read his statement as to why, and completely agree with him.

          1. And how is it going to distract the team? The game of hockey, as their profession, has nothing to do with the choice Thomas made. The only distraction will come from the media swarming around like bugs with nothing better to do.

            1. I agree with all that you said, and do agree with what he said. The media is going to have a field day, we have the pats though so should not last long.

          2. Tim gets the freedom to make that decision and I am thankful we live in a place where we get that freedom. I question the wisdom of that decision and I am thankful we live in a place where we get that freedom too.

            1. Longshot I also am thankful we live in a country where we have the freedom to do as we want and to exchange opinions πŸ™‚

      2. I disagree put ur team 1st, he didn’t have to talk to president, put ur opinions to the side and go with your team,:)

  16. Greg Norman told about his initial invitation to play with then president Clinton. He’s not American but didn’t agree with Clinton politics. Norman called h w bush. H W told him to respect the office of president of the united states above all else. Norman and Clinton are now close friends and Norman openly says his most important lesson was not to judge. Tim Thomas IMHO is an incredible disappointment

I tempered that BTW. I might have been banned from the blog for my original thoughts. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ :). Still smiling πŸ™‚

    1. I respect his decision…..I wonder if, as time passes, when he looks back, he may view it as a missed opportunity of a lifetime. Not many get a chance to be honored for an accomplishment at the White House, especially considering that he was the centerpiece of this particular accomplishment.

      1. I view it as a major failing in this country. Respect

I grew up steeped in politics. There wasn’t s member of the republican party who was not a family friend from volpe to Brooke to kissinger. Kennedy was a name didn’t exist in my families vocabulary. However when invited to a Kennedy dinner it was accepted by my parents with honor and pride. Etiquette is a dying art. When Thomas accepted celebrity, he also accepted responsibity. He sets an example for kids and adults. Does he only attend functions where everyone agrees with his views. Sad. One of the things we hold dear as a country is the fact that we all can believe as we want. To dishonor the highest office in the land because you do not agree”……… Well I’ll go with H W on this because like him it’s what I was raised to hold dear – respect

And that’s my soap box and now getting back to weather

        1. Vicki, you always have interesting things to say about you and your family’s past. I think you should write a memoir. πŸ™‚

          1. Thanks Christie. I have written all down for my kids. I wish my parents had for me. There is a lot I’ll never know

      1. I think maybe Old Salty. I’m on my soap box and need to add that it’s my opinion and no better or worse than anyone elses. Just a different era maybe.

  17. I might be a minority here but declining an invitation from the President whether you agree with the politics or not is disrespecting the office of the president. Thomas should have been there with his teammates.

Now on to more important things like the weather:) it does at least look cold next week.

  18. I have to disagree with you TK. My bet is if Kim Kardasian was invited as well, TT would have swallowed his pride or whatever and found a way to be there. πŸ˜‰

  19. I think it’s so great everyone here can voice their opinions, weather-related or not, and be civil about it. Great blog.

  20. I come from a country that the government does not respect people so it’s sad for me see a star behave that way.

    1. Hadi I’m trying to find the words to say how important your words are but can’t seem to phrasebit any other way than to simply say it. Freedom isnincredible until we start to take it for granted

And I’m sorry if I get too passionate. My mom was the one in politics. I never had an interest much to her dismay until I got a lot older. Apparently her passion rubbed off though :). The one thing I always try to do – no matter how strongly I feel – is understand there are always to sides to a discussion and then learn from it

And on that note I’m off to sleep. Night everyone. TK phenomenal blog and to everyone – just plain great people!!

      1. One of the reasons I want to organize a gathering for people to meet, and have a chance to put faces to names.

I have met 3 of the regular bloggers in person, but would love to meet more of you.

  21. Vicki & OS…Amen!

I am curious as to if many celebs over the years have turned down invites to the White House or if it is actually somewhat rare. I would hope it is the “latter”.

  22. I agree TK. Let’s pick a date say Feb 18th? How does that sound?

Just crazy that it is 49 degrees at 5:45 am!!!

    1. That (Feb 18th) would work for me……

Yes, yet another time where an overnight mild surge officially gave 2 days exceptionally high temps.

Its still 30F on Mt Washington, 42F in Albany, there’s downsloping westerly winds…..Who knows where these morning temps could get to before the cold air advection kicks in later.

  23. I hope the GFS is wrong this morning……

Look at the wound up storm for Super Bowl Sunday ! With those pressures, thats power outage city. Could you imagine ?

    1. Power outages for here or at SB? I remember being on the summit of Washington in August and having temps hover around 30. Crazy weather

      1. New England….Indy, by this solution would be on the extreme western flank of a powerful inside runner.

It should change. I just figure with the way winter has been this year, this scenario of a wound up, windy storm that day would be the icing on the cake.

      1. The invitation by Obama to the White House was not for political reasoning’s or gains. Every team that wins their respective champion has the honor to go to the white house. Its an American Tradition. Thomas made it into a political issue when he declined the invitation and then released a statement. A very Un-American move and poor decision on his part.

I also feel the need to acknowledge that because he lives in this great country that he has every right to decide not to go. No Class.

        1. I just came upon the conversation this morning, but based on what I’ve read so far I agree that the Patriotic thing would be to attend, but as you very well point out… he has every right, a right that this great country has afforded us with, the choice not to attend. Couldn’t agree with you more Coastal that it is a classless move.

  24. I think the the euro has the more valid solution due the placement of cold air that feeds into the system. My guess the GFS will come around but to what extent. The euro from what I can tell delivers a nice storm area wide.

  25. I agree with you coastal–it was a non-political event and he should have gone. I’m not a fan of this president either but you’ve got to go. It’s not like by going, you’re endorsing him.

Longer term GFS looks like a more favorable pattern for storms. Let’s see if it holds!

  26. I don’t know one bird from another but the song birds were out this morning. It ‘sounded’ like April. (and felt that way too)

  27. SATURDAY AND SUNDAY…
24/00Z GFS AND ECMWF HAVE ALTERED THEIR MID-LEVEL FLOW PATTERN
DURING THIS PORTION OF THE FORECAST. CONFIDENCE IN THE DETAILS
REMAINS LOW AS A RESULT. BASED ON THE LATEST GUIDANCE AND MODEL
TRENDS…INTRODUCED THE CHANCE OF A LOW PRESSURE PASSING CLOSE
ENOUGH TO IMPACT SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND LATE THIS WEEKEND.
SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES REMAIN TO BE RESOLVED…WITH THE GFS TAKING
A MORE WESTERN TRACK THAN THE ECMWF. USED A CONSENSUS SOLUTION FOR
NOW UNTIL THE DETAILS CAN BE BETTER DETERMINED.

  28. Hadi’c comment is spot on. As a political gesture on the part of Tim Thomas it is an insult to the Office of President. Teammates, all of whom are from outside the United States, must be scratching their heads at Tim’s decision. First, they must be wondering – “so, what did Obama do to you that makes you this angry?” Second, they have to be perplexed by the paradox that has the only American on the Stanley Cup roster not accepting the White House invitation. Outside the hockey rink, Tim Thomas deserves no respect at all anymore from anyone, regardless of one’s political stripes. We have an elected President in this country. And that person is Barack Obama, whether we like it or not. He is our head of state. Thankfully, we do not have what so many countries in the world still have (including some players on the Bruins) – unelected heads of state who are neither held accountable nor removable. President Obama is held accountable and is removable. Nevertheless, he is our head of state and deserves the respect that being President of the United States of America confers. Tim is a great goalie, but a spiteful, misguided person.

    1. Not being a big hockey fan Thomas was my fav player, now his qualities r in doubt, PUT THE TEAM 1st!!!! Not yourself, Bellicheck would let him go tommorrow πŸ™‚

      1. I don’t see a Canadian Hockey Coach letting go an American Player because he did not meet the President of the United States of America. πŸ™‚

  29. Sorry about the typo’s, and any confusion my last message may cause. I meant to start by saying: “Hadi’s comment is spot on. As a political gesture on the part of Tim Thomas [this gesture – not Hadi’s comment!] is a an insult …”

  30. I still think mostly rain for Thursday night Friday and the weekend storm POTENTIAL is still up in the air. Will see what the 12z runs have to say about these features.
Winter is not over. We have had some big storms in February the blizzard of 78 and The Presidents Day Storm of 2003. I would be shocked if my 40-45 inch snowfall prediction happens. Right now I am thinking 20-30 inches for the season. I still think we get one MAJOR Noreaster before the winter is out.

  31. Euro still has some snow for us, Thurs Night/Friday. Other models NOT.
I don’t get it. There has been so much model divergence this Winter.
    My gut says RAIN. lol

  32. Old Salty I am trying to be optimistic and you got to have some hope. I agree with you on the rain for Thursday night and like I said earlier will see what the 12z runs have to say.

    1. I have lost any ability to remain optimistic. We just can’t buck the persistent
      trends of this Winter.

  33. I wasn’t a big believer in snow storm filled winter this year right from the start but don’t give up yet guys. I think February is going to be different. The winter will still end up below average for snow but there’s a punch or two yet to get us and I think it’s next month.

  34. Here comes the sun. Interesting to watch temps next 2 to 3 hrs. Mt Washington at 28F, so cold air advection is very, very weak still.

  35. It’s 54 here according to my weather app. Mac said his car said 52 when he left at 5:15. I have the windows open and can hear the gulls singing. I even have some clothes on the deck to dry. We are planning hot dogs on the deck for dinner and perhaps a fire on the beach. I love this………….I know I love winter but we’ve had a taste of everything this month and I can’t imagine it getting better than this!

    1. As you can see – takes very little to make me happy. Hmmmmm, rainshine was it hyphens you said you use a lot? I seem to use hyphens, smiley faces and ……………………….. πŸ˜‰

      1. Yes, I have been known to use “dots” (is that what they are called) a lot too! πŸ™‚

Glad you have been having a great time at the beach! Lots of great memories with family. And experiencing nature’s wrath, too! πŸ™‚

        1. Thanks rainshine – my daughter said it is gorgeous there as well and she has all of the windows open in the house.

  36. 12Z GFS much close to a nice solution, still slightly offshore, but maybe its starting to see something.

    http://mag.ncep.noaa.gov/NCOMAGWEB/appcontroller?page=Image&prevPage=Param&image=..%2FGemPakTier%2FMagGemPakImages%2Fgfs%2F20120124%2F12%2Fgfs_namer_102_850_temp_mslp_precip.gif&fcast=102&imagesurls=&model=GFS&area=NAMER&storm=&areaDesc=North+America+-+US+Canada+and+northern+Mexico&cat=MODEL+GUIDANCE&rname=SFC-LAYER+PARMS&pname=850_temp_mslp_precip&cycle=01%2F24%2F2012+12UTC&imageSize=M&currKey=model&scrollx=0&scrolly=0&nextImage=yes

  37. That is close to something good on that run. Just a slight shift and we might be talking about accumulating snow.
I would like to see what the 12z EURO says about Thursday night and the weekend storm POTENTIAL.

  38. Some mets were saying possible snow Sunday. We are supposed to head home Sunday and I hate to cut the time here short. Does anyone have thoughts on the possibility of a storm then and how large and timing? I know it’s a ways away. Thank you.

    1. Vicki,
We need to see the 12Z Euro and to a lesser extent the 12Z Canadian.

They’ll be ready somewhere between 1:30 and 2:00 PM.

  39. 54F at Logan at noon….airmass, I think, also feeling the effects of a late January slowly strengthening sun.

Vicki…..as of right now, majority of odds say your Sunday travel plans are ok, especially with the way this winter has been going.

  40. I have the opposite feeling about Sunday vs. Tom, something is brewing and it could be very interesting. Let’s see what the 12Z EURO has to say. Seems like Dejavu from last week!!!

    1. hmmmmm – well now I don’t like the sound of that. Sorry I’m going to have to wish for a miss since I really don’t want to go home sooner than necessary – especially since my older daughter and family will be here this weekend and they haven’t been able to come until now

  41. Model inconsistency is the norm this winter. Probably every winter to a certain degree, but this winter we’ve seen more of it, I think. One tidbit of weather news that is interesting, but will have little bearing, I believe, on our weather, is that a blocking High over Scandinavia is forming, which will steer East winds into Western Europe for the first time this winter (prevailing wind, of course, is southwest for most in Western Europe). Once this High establishes itself (which itself is an uncommon occurrence, though it happens at least once or twice a year), unlike the Highs that move from west to east over our continent, it tends to stay put for 1-2 weeks, effectively blocking Atlantic Lows from making forward progress over the UK and the northern tier of the European continent. So, expect some cold temperatures in northwestern Europe next week, and very dry weather (much to the relief of many, as it has been miserably rainy and gray over there all winter). I don’t think any of this will impact us. Our blocking mechanism over Greenland continues to be awol, as Lows are just zipping through the lower and middle tier of Canada over the Labrador Sea and through Greenland. While the termperatures in this lower or middle tier of Canada are above normal, snow totals are above normal as well. Many sparsely habited places that are usually “too cold for snow” by now (mostly, too dry) are experiencing daily snow events with temperatures in the teens and 20s (too high for this time of year). I’m thinking of places like Labrador City and Schefferville, Quebec.

    1. dinner on the deck for us – I think the Sox are in town and believe the pro am is taking place in Norton…………………

    1. Hadi – I am confused by this run. 540 line is up in Canada and its an inland track, yet it seems to keep the entire state of VT as snow for the duration of the event with 6″+ in most areas. Doesn’t see right though I am not an expert reading the models. I’m just curious what to expect up there as we are heading to Okemo on saturday. Hoping that verifies and we have some fresh snow.

  42. As I said earlier like an early spring day. To me what we are seeing is a March pattern with snow then a few days later it melts and we get rain with mild temps. Will see if the pendulum swings back to winter this weekend.

  43. Models’ temps are having a tough time adjusting from Climo and are unable to reconcile the impact the anomalously strong 850 S/SW low level jet will have on temps on Thursday Night and Friday. It is going to get warm and warm fast!

Both 12z ECWMF, GFS, have Sunday system as a no go. Their ensemble means are closer, but not close enough for anything significant.

    1. Thanks JMA. I’m actually hoping for that as my driveway is still a compacted ice mess from two weeks ago.

  44. One more question. My son is heading to Rangley ME to ski on Friday and returning to MA on Sunday morning Any problems up that way with drive? Thanks again.

    1. Vicki, looks like more snow/frozen precip up at Sugarloaf on Friday but it will clear out by Friday night. The later in the day he leaves, the less chance he’ll have to be driving in that.

  45. In the end, Joe Lundberg was correct in his projection (his assessment) 7-10 days ago of this week’s temperature anomalies as being “incredible,” particularly given the consistently high temperatures recorded over the past 3 months. He was right. This is astounding, folks, especially because we’ll be right back at 50 or above on Friday. How can that even be possible in mid winter? That would mean that within a 9 day span, in which it did get cold and snowed by the way, we would be recording above 50 degree temperatures on at least 3 days, above 45 on another 2. I sincerely can’t remember ever seeing this happen. Mild days always happen during winter. But, the usual state of affairs is that after a mild day – say a SSE rain storm – we get a strong cold front on the back side that often produces a few stray snow showers and really cold temperatures. That just generally isn’t happening this year.

  46. Mark yeah I think its way warm with that track for Thursday. I can’t believe what it showed as well. And nothing for Sunday on the 12 Z EURO.

JMA I saw the ensmebles as well and nothing to write home about.

  47. It’s a real embarrassment to the bruins that Tt didn’t go, he put politics and himself before the team, kick em off the team or have a meeting with him, he was my fav, now I could care less about em

  48. No surprised at mid-upper 50s today given warm start, lots of sunshine and not much cold air advection. Mt Washington has only dropped from 30F this morning to 23F now…….

Have to wonder, if this pattern goes into the spring, what kind of warm sector temperatures are we going to see and will we susceptible to severe weather episodes ?

    1. In regards to severe weather it was a little surprising how far north the tornado, hail, and damaging wind reports were the
other day. In January severe weather is near the Gulf Coast.
I said as one of my bold weather predictions for 2012 we would get 2-3 big thunderstorm days but no repeat of what happened
      June 1st of last year.

      1. I saw that some areas had a rough (Sunday night ?). Thats a good point about the area affected being further north than climatological norms.

          1. Thanks…….I wonder, if Thursday night/Friday storm is now trending further inland and warmer, how far north a severe weather threat there is for portions of the mid-atlantic and southeast with this system.

    2. Good question. But, my gut feeling says that the pattern will change; too late for winter to set up shop, but not too late for 4-day cut-off lows, cold or at least cool temperatures in both April and May. I predict a very cold – nonexistent – spring. Not that we ever have much of a spring, but this year may be worse than normal. We may have a situation in which even a sunny, 56 degree day like today may be very hard to come by in April or May.

      1. I sincerely hope that you are dead wrong!!! Perhaps we’ll have
a wild and wooly Feb-Mar and have a beautiful warm Spring
        afterall.

        1. I also hope for a colder, more normal February (could still happen) and March. I’m with you. I like seasonal temperatures.

  49. Can only wish for the end of today’s GFS runs to verify…Here is a sample.

  50. From Brett Anderson at Accuweather… (some hope, maybe?)

Even though much of southern Canada and the northern U.S. may not see much in the way of sustained cold over the coming weeks, the type of pattern that the ECMWF is predicting is one where we could see plenty of mischief (meaning several, slow-moving storms with just enough cold air around them for decent snowfall)

I suspect February is going to be an especially challenging month for weather forecasters.

  51. AceMaster left his email and sounds like he is interested in commenting on the blog. I think he would be a great addition and I would like to see him invited.

  52. I’ll send him an email if it okay with TK. From his comments he does not sound like a troll at all

  53. For anyone who is interested in eagles, the web cam at Norfolk Botanical Garden is up and running. The female was killed by a plane last year after her three eaglets were born. I think the entire world watched as they removed the eaglets for fear the father could not keep them alive and then released the eaglets into the wild in the fall.

  54. I have 7.6 for Logan snow total so far this winter – Longshot still holding on but much more and Charlie will take the lead πŸ™‚

  55. Todd on BZ calling for “wintry mix” on Thurs nite with mostly rain in Boston. (There is something I don’t like about the phrase wintry mix.)

  56. You should not like wintry mix because that could be anything from snow sleet to freezing rain and ice is the worst type of winter weather we could have.

    1. Ace Master is not a troll in the least. He would be an excellent choice for this blog…he really knows weather!

Jimmy…by all means, contact him ASAP! πŸ™‚

    1. why??? We have the experts and then we have me who knows nothing except for a love of weather. I ask and re-ask and I find that every single person explains to me in a way that only makes me want to learn more and never makes me feel as if I shouldn’t continue to ask.

Please tell us why you don’t feel as if you belong because if that’s the case we need to make it right.

I’m speaking for me but will be very surprised if everyone doesn’t feel the same.

    2. Hi- Speaking on behalf of my friends here, not sure why you would say that. It does not matter if you blog here everyday or once in a while, everybody is welcome here and respected. Your posts are very good, and you know your weather. Most of us here have been blogging for a year here now, we feel like friends who have just not met yet. There is a meeting being set up and if you can you should go. Speaking for everyone here you are most welcome here and you do fit in, again you don’t need to blog everyday. As you can see this site is not at all like WBZ. This site is very, very civil. And that’s what makes this site so good. We love weather, we love sports. We trust the people here when maybe we have a situation going on in our lives and we need to vent. Trust us when we tell you that please don’t feel that way. As long as you do not attack anybody here you are so welcome. Again relax, blog and blend in because my friend you are with friends.
      Fondly,
      Your friends from WoodsHillWeather.
Where every day is a good day.

      1. I really don’t know as much weather as most here. I just enjoy it even though I take care of patients for a living. Just find that no one really responds to my blogs albeit I’m not on here as much as I’d like. Don’t pay any attention to me. Just having a moment, lol. πŸ™‚

        1. Have you been drinking LOL. I can’t even read a weather map. You had me fooled by your posts, you know your weather. Glad you will be staying and glad you vented. Next time you post I will post seconds later LOL.

        2. If we have not responded then we need to be more aware. I am sorry. I tend to post randomly as you may have noticed I’m really glad you spoke up

    3. You very much belong. More than I do, for goodness sake. I loved your expert analysis last year on the snowstorms. Please stay on the blog.

        1. Very good. Now for honesty. I think you are far more knowledgeable than I so was somewhat intimidated.

I’ve always believed it’s best to speak up if something bothers you since it usually is not what you think

              1. Me?? Oh my. John you have to know I am like popeye. I yam what I yam. I am currently sitting on the couch in sweats that are 100 years old dancing (and I don’t dance) to a song on Last Man Standing. Nothing about that can be intimidating.

Are you going to tell me that didn’t mean me?

                1. I am sorry. Thats the problem with blogs You just see words. Oddly I always felt asmif you and in had more fun non weather related talks

                2. Pete had nothing to say tonight so I could not post anything and you could not come to his defense LOL. I am 100% only playing with you. I love the conversations we have here. And we have formed a nice friendship.

                3. Whew. I should have figured that out but I rend to get really upset if I think I’ve upset anyone

Now I’m going back on the deck then watching state of the union. Night all

                4. I so much enjoy are conversations. We have a ton in common. You should know by now I like to have fun. Sorry If I had you going. But I did want to get a rise out of you LOL. Enjoy the address.

    4. Arod, you might not post everyday but we know your reading. You are most certainly part of this blog! πŸ™‚

  57. The best part of this is all you have to do is love “weather”. When it comes to the technical stuff I just read and check out the links and hope some will sink in to this old head. But there’s a camaraderie here too because of a mutual love for every single event and also for the anticipation for the event.

  58. I’m sure Logan will fall a handful of degrees before midnight…..but, as of right now..the departure from normal for today is……………..+22F.

  59. Just throwing this out there, the idea is very interesting, and rather consistent.
    http://mag.ncep.noaa.gov/NCOMAGWEB/appcontroller?page=Image&prevPage=Param&image=..%2FGemPakTier%2FMagGemPakImages%2Fgfs%2F20120124%2F18%2Fgfs_namer_372_500_vort_ht.gif&fcast=372&imagesurls=&model=GFS&area=NAMER&storm=&areaDesc=North+America+-+US+Canada+and+northern+Mexico&cat=MODEL+GUIDANCE&rname=UPPER+AIR+PARMS&pname=500_vort_ht&cycle=01%2F24%2F2012+18UTC&imageSize=M&currKey=model&scrollx=0&scrolly=0&nextImage=yes

      1. If the other two leave their email addresses like AceMaster did I will do it and if I see them post I will mention it.
That was not the real BaileyMan who posted today.

        1. You would need to mention it to them again. I think BM will come over now. He seems to be getting hit by trolls. Like you said not his post today.

  60. Now for one of my random posts. It could loosely be weather related but more sentimental musings. My mom called the crescent moon Gods fingernail. It was glorious tonight over the south river behind the house. Humarock is a special place thanks to my parents making it possible for my brother and me to spend summers here. Today would have been their 64th anniversary so to be here with the crescent moon and sitting on the deck was very special

    Sorry. Had to share πŸ™‚

    1. Why are you sorry, thats great. Vicki it sounds like to me you have found a place that you like a real lot. You should check out the prices of homes.

  61. Let’s see, I have 3″ and Charlie has 23.9″ so the midpoint between the two is 13.45.”

What is the Logan total right now, about 4.5″ ??

  62. If it snows exactly 5.85″ more at Logan, Charlie and I tie for the winter. More than 5.85″ and I lose. I don’t like my chances very well because there is a long way to go (And especially because I forecasted a storm between Feb 7-10th. ).

As far as being the winner, I would categorize myself as a Longshot.

  63. Checking on the 18th on my calendar…

alisonarod: Don’t you dare go anywhere! πŸ˜› You were one of my favorites coming over from the WBZ blog! You belong.

    1. TK, if you are talking about getting together, I think the 2oth is President’s Day. Some may take a 3 day wknd.

      1. Some people have talked about meeting up on the 18th. I know there will never be a date that works for everybody but if we can get a good amount at one we can always plan another.

  64. Earlier tweet from Matt noyes

If u missed it on @NECN last night, here are my thoughts for 8-14 day forecast – more typical winter weather returns: mnoy.es/wvsbUS

  65. Good morning – what a lovely sunrise!!

It will be difficult for me to find a weekend in Feb or even March between family birthdays and my sister-in-law visiting – also catching up from being away for a month. Once you all plan a date and location I plan to see if I can at least figure a way to get an hour or so to say hi – if not the entire time which of course I’d prefer.

  66. Thank you for some other informative web site. Where else may just I get that kind of information written in such a perfect manner? I have a mission that I am just now running on, and I’ve been on the glance out for such info.
