  1. Another day with many chillingly important tweets. I suspect most if not all school admins are familiar with Tracy’s name.

    https://twitter.com/tracynovick/status/1475301503216885765?s=21

“I’m sure it is challenging for those who fought for remote schooling to see the reporting on the harms to children.

In the future, I anticipate more support for those who do an about face on school closures than for those who try to apologize for them”

    1. Wow. I’m in tears. Every member of our medical community is a true hero…..although I almost prefer angel on earth.

I’m familiar with the doctors name, but not sure why. Mac had treatment at Dana/Brigham except radiation. He went to MGH at newton Wellesley for that. We adored his MGH radiation oncologist and still keep in touch occasionally. She may have mentioned Dr Schoenthaler

    2. Holy Crap Batman!!!

Finally someone writing what my wife and I have been saying for weeks now.

      THANK YOU for posting this.

      1. It occurred to me that we here are aware of what is happening weeks before it seems to trickle to media and frankly those who should know. The news on the restrictions in other countries still has not reached many in this country yet Joshua shared it a while ago.

Even for schools we are pathetically behind the eight ball…..people truly are not aware of the information in the NYT article and yet I started hearing it from every admin individual I know, SC members, etc several months ago. I suspect that is why parents insist on keeping schools open…they just don’t see what is happening. But frankly, parents should not be driving the bus….figuratively

  2. Another tweet and an important article from NYT. Philip, I do not subscribe but was able to read it. THIS is what I have been told by the administrators I’ve mentioned here who have said this year is far and away more difficult than last. Some say it is because the kids were not used to structure last year. But each individual has said what this article says fairly well. If has very little if anything to do with remote last year other than indirectly on several fronts.

This is what Tracy added. But please read the comments…following is a screen shot of a few

    Her added comment is….
“Just want to confirm that it can be true:
    •that kids are struggling;
    •that this is true regardless of how their education was delivered last year;
•that this is in no way indicated by the wearing of pajamas or staring off into space.”

Another view….JPD, this is what your daughter is facing. God Bless each and every teacher, administrator, and staff member.

  3. One more…..maybe two ….and I want to stop to read Joshua’s always important post.

JPD….I’m still hoping the powers that be get this. Since I worked remotely for 40 years, I know how productive / efficient it is compared to in office. I thank God every day for the far sighted president who made it possible for me to work from home after my first was born in 1980

    Boston globe…

“As the role of the office recedes, companies invest real estate savings into remote work
Research shows nearly a quarter of employers have reduced their office space since the start of the pandemic. And a few are downsizing drastically, investing the money they used to spend on square footage to strengthen their ability to operate with employees scattered far and wide.”

    1. I think working remotely is fantastic. I understand that
it is not applicable to every job out there, but if it is, employees should be allowed to work remotely.

  4. Down goes Frazier ….. and my wife. 4-4 in our household.

I’m starting to turn the corner, feeling much stronger today.

Judging by our daughters, it’s about a 3-5 day experiencing of not feeling well.

    1. I am so sorry. Happy the girls are doing better and you have turned the corner. Hope you wife improves very quickly.

      This variant is extremely contagious!!

      1. I guess so !

My wife is a day or so behind me, so she’s tired.

It’s been interesting to watch the person to person progression.

        1. By the time school opens after New Years, virtually every student and staff member will have it or had it. Just my thoughts.

  5. Maryland, like so many states, is in trouble. 130 hospitalizations added in just the last 24 hours. https://twitter.com/DrTomori/status/1475503877977948166

The President is speaking with Governors today on a Zoom call, but no call for mitigation of any kind. I do not understand this. Literally, every other wealthy, industrialized nation has policies in place to at least limit indoor gathering sizes, requirements for negative tests and/or proof of vaccination to travel, etc … Not the U.S. We’re just doing our thing, being the absolute worst at public health among our peers. No surprise. We’ve been really good at this for decades.

    1. There is blood on a lot of peoples hands. And it isn’t limited to those who lose their lives…..it extends to those with long covid and horrifically to the loved ones….many of who, are children…left behind. What the fudge is Biden thinking.

  6. What a cop out by Joe Biden today. “There is no federal solution to the pandemic. This gets solved at the state level.”

Remember, in 2020 Biden accused Trump of not having a plan. He said – verbatim – “Donald J. Trump does not have a plan to get this virus under control. I do.”

Well, no, Joe, you do not. It’s extremely disappointing that he delegates everything to the states, knowing full well that many states don’t give a damn about the pandemic, while others don’t have the resources to fight it.

  7. England update – waiting for the full UK update tomorrow – on admissions of children 0 to 17: Another 120 today. I don’t think there’s a doubt that Omicron impacts children far worse than previous variants. Until we know more, we should consider keeping schools closed until mid January. I am in definitely favor of in-person learning. Yet, one cannot discount these figures. The US is already seeing similar numbers. Suppose we’re at 120 * 5 (adjusting for our population) or 600 admissions per day (and of course it will go higher still as the curve suggests in England). That’s unacceptable risk.

  8. Article from 2014 on HIV, and how it affected the U.S. far worse than Europe, and that it still affects (in 2014 and 2021) the U.S. much worse than Europe. See link below. The article doesn’t emphasize enough the fact that public health officials in Europe were all over HIV from the beginning, much more so than here. I know. I lived in Europe then and spent summers and a few Christmas vacations here. The differences were stark in the 1980s. It was as if most of America was sort of in denial, while Europe was on top of it. Sound familiar? It should, because that’s the way it goes with each and every public health crisis, from opioids, to HIV, to infant mortality, to Covid-19. https://newrepublic.com/article/117691/aids-hit-united-states-harder-other-developed-countries-why

Sadly, we do not have a President with a bold vision for public health. We’re not addressing any public health issue head on. We’re mostly in ostrich mode.

    1. I’m still not sure why anybody thought things were going to be miraculously better by putting the current person in the White House.

My words were this: If/when he gets in, we’ll still be screwed, just in somewhat different ways.

      Guess I was right. 😉

  9. CDC shortening the quarantine period to 5 days—also saying people fully vaccinated but not boosted >6 months post 2nd dose are no longer exempt from testing and quarantine when a close contact

    1. There has been a cream cheese shortage for awhile; I know it sounds funny, but it’s really problem for NYers. What are they supposed to put on their bagels? You can’t get a bagel with a schmear. I’m not joking, although I do have lots of jokes about this. I have no idea why there would be a cream cheese shortage of all things, but there you go.

      1. Hahaha. But that was one reason I was looking for it and cream cheese, cuke and dill sandwiches for a choice in mew years Eve. We saw it a while ago. I was surprised it has taken this long.

  10. Worldometer reports almost 14,000 new cases in MA today. I hope that this includes some catching up from Christmas.

    1. Yes, it’s weekend numbers and today. All will be somewhat lower than what the `real’ number is. I expect tomorrow and Wednesday to see some data dumps.

  11. One SIL saw the 5 day moronic quarantine and asked what the point of laying off unvaccinated workers was if you will allow people who have Covid to work.

I’m hearing airlines want to end the mask mandate because it is upsetting s many

    We are so darned screwed
