  1. Good morning.
I believe that Worldoneter counts probable cases as well as reported cases . The only thing that comes close to the discrepancy.

    1. So what is a probable case. Here is what I found:

A COVID-19 case is an individual who has been determined to have COVID-19 using a set of criteria known as a case definition. Cases can be classified as suspect, probable, or confirmed. CDC counts include probable and confirmed cases and deaths.

The case classifications for COVID-19 are described in an updated interim COVID-19 position statement and case definition issued by the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists. A probable case or death is defined as any one of the following:

Meets clinical criteria AND epidemiologic linkage with no confirmatory laboratory testing performed for SARS-CoV-2

      Meets presumptive laboratory evidence

Meets vital records criteria with no confirmatory laboratory evidence for SARS-CoV-2

Any cases and deaths classified as probable are included in CDC case counts. The same applies to any cases and deaths classified as confirmed.

We should probably be counting the probable cases as well.
Or at least it seems we should.

    1. These numbers are HORRIFIC and it does represent
the highest single day total since the beginning of
      the pandemic.

    1. Yes, my daughter is supposed to pick up her test kits on Sunday.

Sad part of it all, they are NOT NOT NOT going to test
      the students!

      !@_#)(!@*#()*!@)(#*)!(@*#)(!*@)(#*!)(@*#)(!*)(@#*!)(@*#)(!*@()#*!)(@*#)(!*@#)(*!)(@#*)(!@*#)(!*()@#*!()@*#)(!*@#)(!*)(@#*()!*#@)(*!)(@#*)(!*@#)(*!)@(#*)(!@*#()!*@()#*!)(@#*()@!#()@

The school administrators and government officials
have their heads up their ASS!!!

I am SICK to death of these DEADLY policies!!!
      @)!(#)!*@)#(*!)(@#*)(!*@#)(*!)(@#*)(!*@#)(*!)(@#*)(!*@#)(!*)(@#*!()@*#)(!*@#)(*!)(@#*)(!*@#(!*@)(#*!)(*@#()!*@#)(*!

      1. I could not say this any better than you have. They are indeed deadly policies and the game is being played with our youngest children.

        1. My wife and I are just frustrated to death over this.
We are also bitterly disappointed that friends have ignored all of this and elected to travel anyway! makes no sense whatsoever.

        2. Ohhhhhh one thing. School admins have very little say. Riley has pretty much authoritarian rule. We are losing exceptional school admins just as we are teachers. This and all these decisions sit squarely in the lap of DESE. Sadly, few know that so the school admins are taking the blame.

  2. It is clear from the figure below – see tweet – that states with higher vaccination rates have much lower fatality rates than states with lower vaccination rates. Some of the states with low vaccination rates have so-called “pro-life” governors who have actively undermined efforts to vaccinate. They are frauds. They are not pro-life. https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1476556224594427907

    1. And you know who would agree with me? Donald J. Trump. I dislike him with a passion. But, it’s obvious from his recent interviews on vaccines and boosters that he has lost his patience with the anti-vax crowd (even if they support him), including Candace Owens and others.

    2. Fascinating. Thank you Joshua.

I have yet to meet a “Pro-Lifer” who was truly pro-life.
Pro-fetus perhaps, but after birth it is PRO_SCREW_YOU!!!

      1. Well I take that back. There are individuals who are
TRULY pro-life. It is virtually all of the Pro-Life
Politicians that are PRO SCREW YOU after birth and many individuals as well.

  3. My instinct tells me, re: schools, that over the next 7 to 10 days, that changes will come in the middle of next week. I don´t know what the changes will be.

But, after 2-3 days, where student absences will be large and faculty absences will be large (and difficult to cover), the chaos to adjust to those realities will force adjustments.

But, its going to take that first, I just don´t think DESE is going to budge, for now on its stances. But, wait til parents and guardians and school staffs see the Covid chaos next week.

Parent frustration can help to change policy.

    1. A very realistic take on this. Thank you.

I see nothing but chaos next week as well.

It is amazing how STUBBORN and STUPID DESE is being!

      1. Well, I think bigger institutions can be slow to react when something changes really FAST !

I think the purchase of 200,000 tests for staff seemed a big reaction and workable maybe a few days ago, but suddenly today, seems like it is only now a good starting point, but needs to be accompanied by even more.

There will need to be more policy changes to catch up to the reality of the spread of omricon.

        1. You are right about bigger institutions. But….you knew that was coming eh?…..Riley is DESE and we have seen this coming since last summer. Heaven knows I have yet to shut up about it not will I. These are our children.

      1. Well, I give him a little understanding in that, the best place for kids to be is in school.

I never thought this winter would be as stressful as last winter and yet, seemingly, here we go to tough decisions for parents, guardians, staff, principals, etc and a very challenging, upcoming week.

        1. I agree and admire you for supporting a body that determines what happens in your school. I also agree that the best place for some kids is in school. Not all. His decisions are supposed to be in the best interest of all. With 60,000 covid positives, that safe ship sailed for all a while ago. To deny remote for schools that had to close full classes or entirely due to covid pretty much showed how unreasonable he is.

But the larger picture is that he has chosen authoritarian rule. Decisions for schools has always been up to the school committee folks we elect and who know their town far better than he. He removed that right.

          1. I firmly believe that our schools are currently NOT
healthy and safe for the children, therefore the ONLY
choice at this time is REMOTE. Period, end of discussion. To think otherwise is Foolish, Dangerous and potentially DEADLY.
            Why don’t people see this????????????????

          2. I kind of wonder about the remote option and how much that Reilly knew got push back from teacher unions.

Having the full in-school and remote going simultaneously is unrealistic to accomplish for teachers unless everyone is switched to the hybrid model, which then opens up some planning time for teachers to do both. But, if a teacher is teaching 8-2:20pm because the majority is full-time, then when do they have the time for the remote kids.

More staff cant be hired due to budgets.

I kind of think something like, the week of Jan 3rd thru the 7th, nothing new will be covered. Only review. Drop attendance taking for the week. New learning will resume Monday the 10th. Put out guidance to parents/guardians that if you are sick at all, stay at home. Make all the days 1/2 day dismissals, where those students and staff who go to school can have some review on the handful of units that have been covered so far and lets see where we all are on the 10th.

            1. I agree and always have. However, he could have put another remote option in place in the form of home schooling. The only one he approved had to be signed up for last April and barely anyone knew it existed.

Funny thing and as an aside, my grandkids who are home schooling are a bit ahead of their in-class peers. Sutton admins have been amazing by keeping in touch and answering questions. Their parents are fully invested.

But with the large picture is that with the absences and lack of substitutes, what we are left with is not a quality education. And that is is absolutely NO WAY due to the tremendous effort made by all teachers and staff. The stress, not to mention illness, is wreaking havoc with the kids. The numbers of those struggling emotionally are staggering. We were worried about the emotional toll and sadly safety of kids who were not in school. Then we increased both.

I didn’t think we’d get to 2000 a day mostly because I didn’t think anyone would let it get to that. If we climb higher, I truly think some who are making the decisions to willingly allowing should be removed.

Tom I absolutely understand your view and agree. It has always been that a solution for some and not all that has me furious. Another layer is added now because we are putting all children at tremendous risk…..as well as staff.

              1. Absolutely.

The good news is we care about the kids and so we have the same common goal at heart. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Keep them healthy and keep their education moving forward at a high rigor, stress free experience.

                1. Absolutely. And we care about the teachers, admin and staff. I honestly cannot say enough about the support my daughters have from their school admins and their kids teachers. One teacher cried when she knew a granddaughter was being home schooled. She will be tutoring that grand after the holidays.

My appreciation also extends to our bus driver who is beyond exceptional.

    1. Haha. Coming around. We all experienced improvement around late day 3 to day 4, but I would say my wife and I have plateaued at a level that’s not back to fully healthy.

Ie ….. taste is largely absent, smell is affected and an occasional cough.

But throat is great, strength is back for everyone.

  4. Tom I hope you all feel better soon.

3rd straight day in CT with a record for positivity as it is now 20.3% New numbers won’t be released until Monday.

  5. Tom, I hope y’all are better real soon. I get the feeling we’re in big trouble for the next two week in schools. My colleague texted in our group text that everybody who she celebrated Christmas with last Saturday are positive. As of this afternoon, her boyfriend is positive. My friend can’t find a test kit. I have already taught (covered) one of her classes this semester as she was out after testing positive.

I also get the feeling that winter sports (MIAA) will be on hold stating Monday.

  6. Vicki as I mentioned the other day CT had for the longest time the lowest positivity rate in the country. I was thinking we could reach 10% with this surge but I never thought I would see a 20.3% positivity rate. I am glad I am getting my booster tomorrow to have extra protection.

    1. Here’s why. https://twitter.com/MaxCRoser/status/1476661032865173510

Moreover, UK reported 332 deaths today (likely some backlog, but still).

I’m seeing hospital admissions rising everywhere across the U.S.

It’s perplexing how little I am seeing Governors or the President.

I am seeing a lot of Rochelle Walensky. Although she is very intelligent (and quite beautiful, too), I’m sort of tired of seeing her.

  7. Interesting to see that France, Italy, Belgium, and several other countries are issuing OUTDOOR mask mandates.

  8. 21,137 newly reported cases in MA today!!!! With an additional
    949 probable cases.

    Will this ever end?

Oh, but get those kids to school! That is plain WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. I caught a clip of the secretary of education Miguel Cardona and he is saying when it comes to schools we got mitigation strategies in place and we opened schools with the Delta surge.

  10. Netherlands booster campaign got off to a slow start last month, but is now in Ferrari mode. 254,000 boosters yesterday. They expect to have done 260,000 today. That would be well over 5 million in the U.S. We’re not even close to that. Many days we’re under 1 million, and some days less than 500,000. Is there any sense of urgency? In state governments? Federal government? Does anyone even know what’s going on regarding testing? Testing reimbursement – promised by Biden, very unclear when it will happen? Mass vaccination centers? Vaccination requirements for domestic travel; or at the very least rapid tests at airports? Any capacity limits, anywhere? Any discussion of temporarily halting pro sports leagues? Any discussion of extending school vacations by a week?

  11. I just saw on the news a doctor from Yale New Haven Hospital saying he would recommend our governor put in place indoor mask mandates as he feels this is only going to get worse in the next 6-8 weeks. As I said earlier three straight days now we have set a record for positivity and people in the hospital is now up to 1,151.

  12. Now the question is Vicki will Governor Lamont do this? There were 3 million at home testing kits that were suppose to arrive today but have been delayed by a couple days due to shipping problems along with 6 million N95 masks that which cities and towns will distribute.

  13. I just caught the news. Someone mentioned that we might need to start thinking about remote in MA. I didn’t know whether to laugh or groan. My daughter walked through and just said….”gee, I never would have thought of that.”

  14. Vicki to answer your question about remote learning in CT they got rid of remote learning when last school year ended. There is no mention of remote learning but if these schools have staff shortages and there is no coverage I don’t see how they could continue with in person learning.

  15. Increase of 106 hospitalizations in Massachusetts in one day. Yet, nothing changes policy-wise. Not even a whisper from the top. To reiterate, I ain’t asking for much. And certainly not a lockdown. But, we’ve got to reduce the sizes of crowds in restaurants and indoor venues; also capacity limits and distancing in supermarkets and stores would be welcome. They’re way too crowded right now. College sports ought to pause. The NBA should pause, as the NHL did (and should continue to). This is less for the players as it is for the general public, as fans are stuffed and crammed in indoor facilities with poor ventilation. Remote learning should be an option, at least for the first week or two of January.

    1. That’s NET hospitalizations, by the way, so the actual number of hospitalizations today was higher than 106, but was offset by some who were discharged or died.

  16. I have a New Years wish. If we are allowed to make New Years wishes

My wish is that the Christmas break allowed kids cases of covid to settle; and when they return, number will drop from the last report

    1. As a Natick parent I can attest that we’ve received a similar head׳s up every break since last fall—no disruptions to in-person learning this far. Natick has handled things very well—kudos to those teachers and administrators
