Summer Before Spring?

3:56PM

Well here we go, 2 more very warm days coming, Wednesday & Thursday, as high pressure builds right over the region. High temperatures both days in most areas will be 80+. Concord NH has a chance of a 90 on Thursday thanks to a down-sloping WNW wind off the mountains, which compresses and warms. Let’s see if they can make it…

Again, the only precipitation threat comes as a very slight risk of isolated thunderstorms south of the Mass Pike on Thursday with some minor convergence of warm/dry air and warm/slightly moist air in the region. This is a very low probability but I still feel it is worth a mention.

A cold front comes through from the north Friday but without much fanfare. Temperatures begin their downward trend on this day.

The weekend will turn cloudier and much cooler and probably eventually unsettled with low pressure developing to the south and high pressure building to the north.

This should be beyond the region by early next week which will probably be dry and cool.

Forecast for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH…

REMAINDER OF AFTERNOON/EVENING: Sunshine. Temperature ranging from the 60s coast to near 80 some inland areas. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

TONIGHT: Clear except areas of fog inland valleys. Low 45-55, coolest interior valleys. Wind near calm to light SW.

WEDNESDAY: Sunny. High around 80, cooler in some immediate coastal areas. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Low 50-60, coolest interior areas, mildest at the coast. Wind SW 5-10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Only a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms south of the Mass Pike in the afternoon. High in the upper 70s to middle 80s, a few upper 80s possible interior valleys. Wind WNW 10-15 MPH except WSW near the South Coast.

FRIDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 50. High 60.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy. Low 40. High 50.

SUNDAY: Cloudy. Chance of rain showers day, rain or snow showers night. Low 35. High 45.

MONDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 32. High 49.

  1. Even when it cools back to normal at least it will look like mid may with all the trees and plants budded thanks tk

  2. All the trees are budding, never seen it this early wow, we need rain and I think we get rain late in weekend and into next week there’s a few showers possibly, like tk said temps come back to normal with highs in the mid 50β€²s and nights around 40

    1. I remember a few other years this early. Although I never remember an entire winter this overall mild. Also the fall was extended with leaves hanging on longer than I do ever remember. Pete B just showed a graph that has out past winter comparable to what Salisbury MD sees

  3. Seabreeze in Marshfield just disappeared and temp has soared. Might be interesting to watch Logan the next couple of hours.

  4. 3 reasons why it won’t snow in the Boston to Providence corridor. Ocean temps are running 3-5 degrees above average and yes I know Boston sea surface temp is a chilly 44.8 degrees but there are alot of warmer pockets out there between 48-52 degrees. 2. This consistent warm stretch that has warmed the ground is to much to overcome. Yes we have in a few instances had memorable late March early April snow events but ocean temps were slightly below average then. Have a great day πŸ™‚

    1. How does that compare to same factors last October? I know ocean temps were above normal all summer and well into winter. I seem to think it was relatively warm prior to the storm since we put windows in porch later than we have in 20 years sine we added porch.

      1. Good points Vicki…..

I’ve been amazed at the Mt. Washington temp lately for how warm it’s been. Well, in the spring, the reverse can happen. In a cold airmass, the strong sun can get an afternoon high to 45 or 50F in a relatively chilly airmasses, but Mt. Washington’s temp will be about 15F, showing how cold the airmasses is above. Put a southern tracking system, at night, into that airmasses and presto, it will snow, even to the coastline. I’m not saying that’s going to happen or is in the pipeline down the road, but it’s still definitely a possibility…….that’s why this warm airmasses has been incredibly amazing, watching how warm temps have been aloft.

        1. Don’t you love the autocorrect. Soon it figures out most of what you mean but I can come up with some pretty odd words when I look back. I do agree. In new England it is nothing can ever be ruled out. That’s why it’s a great place to live

  5. Thanks TK and happy summring everbody! Summer like temps to kick off spring 2012. The best part with this warm weather no humidity.

    1. Thanks TK for your thoughts about this spring in the long range…and Amen to no humidity! πŸ™‚

  6. Peyton Manning is now a member of the Denver Broncos! The matchup vs. Pats should be a good one to say the least…very much looking forward to it. No date has been announced yet. πŸ™‚

So now what happens to Tim Tebow??

    1. Philip, is that in Denver or Foxboro ? I know Tebow won’t like it, but they should keep him. After all the neck issues, what’s the likelihood Manning makes it through a whole NFL season not injured ?

      1. Tom, my understanding is the game is in Foxboro. If Manning stays healthy, I suspect that Tebow will see little or no playing time other than during the preseason.

        1. Foxboro…..excellent !! Broncos-Pats was pretty good during the late 80s (Elway vs Eason) and into the mid 90s (Elway vs Bledsoe). I seem to remember a game in the 90s in Foxboro and Denver was beating the Pats pretty badly and I think it was Shannon Sharpe who was talking into the camera on the sidelines talking a lot of trash about the Pats.

        2. Tebow will not be in Denver for the season, the coach has already said he would be traded. Elway never bought into TIM. He would have probably been in denver if manning had not come along. Also I guess his name is really taking a hit this week. Some saying he would be a better running back verse quarterback. Mark my word he is gone. And also elway is the reason why peyton is here, trust that.

  7. Boy, Logan is stubbornly holding to that sea breeze. All coastal locales just south of Logan have jumped into the 70s with a SW wind. I still think Logan may jump into the 70s at 7pm or 8pm.

    1. I remember Todd Gross used to refer to the “six o’clock” jump on his weathercasts. With DST Boston should get warm by 7-8 pm as you stated. It never fails. πŸ™‚

  8. I did some checking of photos. We drove to charleston SC every April vaca from 1986 until 2006. We never saw any sign of spring until new jersey where there would be weeping willows and then into MD we’d see the start of dogwoods. The azaleas in charleston would be just past when we arrived.

The daffodils on the side of our house that have been in full bloom for over a week never bloomed until after our return – late April. I have a picture of them under a foot of snow with the flowers peaking out because I uncovered them on April 29, 1987.

March hasn’t been unusual for them to bloom for 5 or so years. This year they are 2 weeks ahead of last year which may seem like a lot BUT I’d say the 6 or 7 weeks from normal from a few decades ago is a lot bigger deal. That normal would have been from the year they were planted 1979.

    1. I should add that the march bloom has been happening for at least 6 or 7 years and before that it was consistently a bit earlier every year

  9. Channel 4 today said that they expect the above normal temps to come back to average but average to slightly above average into middle spring.

      1. I onto CBS.com they have a written story on it, they say there that it won’t be as warm but expect average to slightly above average temps to continue into spring πŸ™‚ I knew I heard but then I found the article that they talked about, take a look πŸ™‚

  10. The sun begins setting after 7pm tommorrow night, the sun doesn’t set again before 7pm again until mid Sept.

    1. This creates the possibility that from midnight tonight to midnight tomorrow night, for that 24 hr period, that Logan does not go below 60F.

  11. I have been saying since last week, somebody hits 90 on Thursday. My wack job neighbor has her ac on. I am inside and have shorts on, and have quite the chill.

    1. My neighbor has AC on too but they both have awful allergies and warnings are out for anyone who does

      1. Lol……if its really 85F to 90F Thursday, then I’ll probably try to sneak the AC on too when my wife’s not looking. πŸ™‚

        1. Might as well Tom…I think I heard one of the TV mets say that someone “will” hit 90 come Thursday.

  12. It’s a cooler 80. I am not a fan of heat. I still had on slacks and a light long sleeve top today. It just isn’t like the summer 80s to me.

The only summer memories I’m getting at the moment are the four neighboring dogs who are left out to bark. I love dogs. I love my dog. I just do not expect my neighbors to love my dog – or listening to him.

  13. AC is already being used on some MBTA buses and subways. The subway station fans haven’t been turned on yet, but maybe on Thursday most likely. Actually the subway stations this time of year are the last to warm up and in the fall the last to cool down from summer’s heat.

  14. It’s 3 days of warmth then back to reality. AC should not be needed even if it’s 85 bc of low dew points.

TK any chance you can look at your crystal ball for Orlando starting Friday for 1 week.

    1. What a life you lead. My aunt also works for a travel company, not Sure what one. She is in aruba now.

  15. Hey guys,
I’m looking to purchase two new/used Ipad 2 16g wi fi. Please let me know if you are someone you know has one availible. Thanks.

    1. Just sold my iPhone 3GS on eBay for $217. Basically paid for my 4s or whatever the new model number is I love my iPad but would get the phone before iPad. John is right. Check eBay. I’ll ask around though.

  16. Todd’s evening blog says frost for next Tuesday morning!

Pete’s blog says more record temps ahead for spring into at least early summer with very few cooldowns.

  17. Dew points are in the low 50s in Boston at the moment, and may get near 60 tomorrow. So tomorrow will definitely feel like a summer day, with the threat of an afternoon thunderstorm.

  18. “Oh mr sunshine oh mr sunshine, you make me happpyyy when skies are grey. You’ll never know dear how much i love you….”

  19. Good morning everyone, is anybody still trying to say snow is POSSIBLY coming, the word possibly should be taken out of dictionary, I think its used alot in the wrong text, I’m still on the no snow bandwagon, never did see snow as a real possibility on the models.

    1. πŸ™‚ logically, of course, your right. But, yeah, for the next 6 or 7 weeks, it’s (a snowfall) is possible. πŸ™‚

    2. I’m on that wagon as well. Who would not want this weather. Just saying you still have that remote outside shot till April

    3. Charlie – I think if any word were to be removed it would be impossible since I don’t believe anything is impossible but that all is possible. We have to get you a new cup πŸ™‚

    4. I worked with the State Climatologist for nearly 20 years. He taught me early to never EVER discount a snow threat through mid Spring (i.e., early May), NO MATTER what the weather pattern has been like.

There’s a big difference between leaving the possibility open in the beyond-medium range when it’s still in the climatological timeframe, and saying we won’t have snow in the next 10-15 days because the pattern does not support it. None of us have any idea if it will snow after March 31. It’s too early to tell.

  20. If the GFS is correct, then there’s yet another 1, maybe 2 day surge of warmth returning to southern and even central New England about the middle of next week.

  21. John it might seem that I live a charmed life πŸ™‚ but the last trip was a work trip that I got for winning an award. This vacation is a family trip!!

  22. I know it seems like summer and all but the worms in my compost pile are still in a big ball. They must know something is coming! Of course it’s not a bad day for the first full day of spring.

  23. I can’t saw who but one of the area’s most loved patriots player from the past has checked into a local hospital. It is being kept secrete. He has phenomia.

  24. Saints took a hit for their bounty program. Of course I think anyone involved should simply be out of the game including the players but that’s me πŸ™‚

    1. I think some of the teams do it but can’t agree on all. Hadi I have never seen the Pats play dirty.

  25. Tebow just traded to jets as for now a backup. I suspect this may change as sanchez has not been doing good.

  26. Its not dirty but rather a style of play, I would gtd you that every team rewards players for big hits, just under the radar.

    1. The problem is Hadi is that the hits on Farve were not under the radar. They were blatant and they were horrific. I had to walk away from the TV and know many others – men and women – who did the same.

  27. Mt. Washington up to 52F !!! Northern New England, away from some of the cooler maritime air near the New England south coast is in the low-mid 80s and it’s in the mid 80s west of New England in most of Michigan. Tomorrow is going to cook !!

    1. I’ve been on top of Mt. Washington in early august and it was in the 30’s at the top…crazy!
