Tuesday November 1 2022 Forecast (7:00AM)

DAYS 1-5 (NOVEMBER 1-5)

After an October that started cooler than normal then shifted to a mild pattern, and a brilliant foliage season peak for much of the region, we enter November still in a mild pattern with the now ongoing “rustic peak” of foliage. The brilliant reds and oranges are past peak, but many of the trees that are at peak now in our region produce deeper golds and browns, which in my opinion are quite nice to look at as we move into late autumn. The weather in the coming days will be quite nice to be outside looking at such sights, or shifting your focus to cleaning up the leaves that have fallen – I know I gotta do that soon! First though, a little speed bump as we start the month with a disturbance moving through, producing some rain showers this morning. This activity will push out this afternoon though clouds will be somewhat stubborn. It will be mild though. Only a very slight cool down occurs for mid week as high pressure first to our north and west provides a northeasterly air flow briefly before the high settles to the south and we get a southwesterly air flow by later in the week , warming it up quite nicely.

TODAY: Mostly cloudy. Scattered rain showers through midday. Highs 61-68. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 40-47. Wind shifting to NW up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 58-65. Wind shifting to NE up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Clear. Fog patches interior lower elevations. Lows 38-45. Wind variable under 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Sunny. Highs 60-67. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Clear. Fog patches interior lower elevations. Lows 36-43. Wind calm.

FRIDAY: Sunny. Highs 66-73. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 45-52. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Sunny. Highs 68-75. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (NOVEMBER 6-10)

Fair weather and above normal temperatures continue through November 6 to finish off the first weekend of November. Watching for a cold front to move through with little fanfare, maybe a few rain showers, on November 7, still a mild day, but leading to cooler/dry weather for the middle of next week.

DAYS 11-15 (NOVEMBER 11-15)

This is the period of time we watch for a potential pattern change. Again, guidance has been inconsistent in details of how this happens, but the general idea right now is that we will start with high pressure holding on for a dry Veterans Day, a potential unsettled November 12-13 weekend as we watch both low pressure to the south and a disturbance from the west, then a shift to cooler/colder air as the trough which had been out to the west moves into the Northeast. Confidence is only moderate at best with this scenario, but this is the idea to work with for now, then adjust as needed. Some guidance has thrown some snow at us in its forecasts for some of these days, but it’s nothing to really lock into yet – just something to monitor as really more an indicator of a shift to colder weather at some point.

    1. Not sure we end up with a warm Nov, despite the warm start. Long way to go. Big changes may be coming by mid month.

  1. TK, Marshfield drew Woburn for its 1st round football playoff game this Friday. 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 Woburn at Marshfield.

      1. No. Playoffs are before. Super bowls are after.

There are not enough weeks to do high school football from December to January. 😉

      1. If that verifies, Worcester is going to get a good head start on Boston for the seasonal snowfall, as usual. Here’s hoping for consecutive “victories” though. There’s a first time for everything. 😉

        2021-22:

        Boston 54.0”
        Worcester 53.6”

  2. Good morning. Joshua and I have exchanged a couple of emails. TK and I have been chatting and with his encouragement and Joshua’s permission I would like to add an update.

Sadly, Joshua’s son is still struggling. His son’s mom and sister were here to support both Joshua and his son but have had to return home. I cannot even begin to imagine how difficult this time is for Joshua and his entire family. Joshua said he is continuing to use twitter for business purposes but is not sure if he will able to return to WHW.

Joshua, please know that to a tee, every person on this blog is always here for support. We miss you and are all hoping for the very best outcome soon

  3. This morning Matt Noyes issued his monthly outlook which features above normal temps and below normal precipitation for us.

The only exception is for above normal precipitation for the South Coast. TK – Does this mean we could be scraped by some ocean storms perhaps?

  4. Thanks, TK!

Joshua, know of my prayers for your son, you and your family,

Philip, most high schools play an eight-game regular football schedule, seven games from mid-September to the end of October and then the traditional Thanksgiving game. The first records from the first seven games are ended into an complicated formula that even God doesn’t understand to rank the state schools in Divisions 1-8, one being the largest schools.
The top 16 teams makes the playoffs in each division which start this weekend.
The teams that are not in the top 16 and the losers of the playoff games are paired up in “non-playoff” games by the MIAA for so all schools can have an 11-game season.

The finalists in all 8 divisions play at Gillette the first weekend of December for their respective state championships. Mr. Kraft now allows all 16 teams to play at Gillette with a special breakfast during that week where the captains, head coaches, ADs, principals, drum majors and cheer captains can visit the stadium and go down on the field.

In addition, all MIAA tournaments in all sports are now state-wide, meaning there are no longer sectionals All teams across the state are ranked for pairings and brackets.

In D-4 football, Middleborough is hosting the Spartans of East Longmeadown in the first round of the playoffs.

Hope that helps, Philip. Study tonight for the test on all of this tomorrow morning! 🙂

  5. Can you believe we are in mid-semester exam week already? End of Term 1 is Friday and grades are due November 10. November is a very choppy month for teaching and learning with Election Day, Veterans Day and three days off at Thanksgiving. Lots of starts and stops.

But no Snow/Weather Days so far, right, Tom? Unlike last year, we got through October unscaved!!!!!!!
I am in your camp, Tom. Full steam ahead till June 20!!! 🙂

  6. You can tell I have unexpected free time this afternoon. I haven’t had time to post lately. Someone recently mentioned Thomas Dolby here. I don’t know his work other than “She Blinded Me With Science”, except that Thomas played keyboards for David Bowie during Live Aid in 1985.

Here is an incredible version of “Heroes” with Thomas on keyboards from July, 1985:

    1. It was probably me. I have been a fan of Thomas since the early 1980s. It’s funny – “She Blinded Me With Science” is a great pop song, but taking into account his pretty extensive body of work, it’s not very high on the list of “best” songs, but it’s the one the pop crowd wants to hear. Don’t get me wrong, I love the song. It’s a signature of 1983’s summer for me, along with many of his other early tunes. 🙂 That song wasn’t even included on the original UK version of the album, “The Golden Age of Wireless”, which is his debut. But the record company in the USA said “you’ll have to write a couple candidates for pop hits if you want to get played in this country on the radio” so he wrote “…Science” and another song called “One Of Our Submarines”, which is probably the better of the two songs. But the former was chosen as the single for the US, and it was a hit of course. The record company was right – but that’s kind of a shallow thing as far as Thomas in concerned. He was not really in it to get “the hits”. He was in it for the love of music.

He went on to have several more albums, all with a distinctive personality – 1984’s “Flat Earth”, 1988’s “Aliens Ate My Buick”, 1992’s “Astronauts and Heretics”, a couple albums that were film soundtracks, “Gothic” in the late 80s and “Gate To The Mind’s Eye” in the early 90s.

After that he took a fairly lengthy hiatus from the music business to focus on a company which was responsible for a lot of the sounds that cell phones make, among other things.

He’s a professor at a US college now, and also has done a series of tours as both a one-man-band and in a small group of musicians for various things, including a film he made about a dozen years ago and went on the road to show it and perform the soundtrack live. I was at that show, in fact on November 1 2013, 9 years ago today, with a VIP to meet Thomas after the show. 🙂

He released a couple live albums from these tours, and a new studio album that was put together from 3 EP’s that were part of an online game. The album is called “A Map Of The Floating City” (it was also the game’s name). There was a bonus track on the album called “I’m Not Your Dog” and that is the song that was recently re-worked as a collaboration between Dolby and Todd Rundgren on Todd’s new album. 🙂

Another fact about Thomas Dolby that some people don’t know, besides being in Bowie’s band for Live Aid, he is also the keyboardist responsible for the ethereal sound of the intro and throughout the hit by Foreigner, “Waiting For A Girl Like You”. He explained the process of creating the sound for that song in one of his concerts in which he broke down and reconstructed a bunch of his own songs, but also touched on that one for a bit. 🙂

He’s a great guy and a remarkable musician!

    1. That would be close to normal for Logan (49.2”).

I’ll take that as a “successful” winter! 🙂

  7. Correlation: I believe Matt Noyes had “near normal” precipitation for the South Coast compared to below normal for the rest of SNE.
