Drier Heat Today, Humidity Returns Sunday

8:53AM

You’ll notice a difference today. A hot day, but much drier than yesterday, and with a nice breeze from the west. But humidity will be back Sunday and Monday as we remain on the northeastern edge of a major heatwave and disturbances riding along it play with the “humidity switch”.  By Tuesday, expect to be back into some drier air again, and a little less heat, lasting through midweek and including Independence Day. Disturbances are most likely to cause shower and thunderstorm threats early Sunday morning and during the day Monday, based on current timing.

Updated forecast for eastern MA, southern NH, and RI…

TODAY: Sunshine but filtered to dimmed for a while later morning through early afternoon by a period of high &  middle clouds. Hot but not that humid. Highs from the middle 80s Cape Cod and Islands to upper 80s and lower 90s most places, a few middle 90s interior areas mostly north of the Mass Pike. Wind W 10-15 MPH gusting 20-25 MPH.

TONIGHT: Mostly clear then partly cloudy later. Low 60-65.  Wind W 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY: Partly to mostly sunny. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are most likely before 11AM with only a very slight risk of a few isolated thunderstorms late in the day. Hot but more humid. Highs middle 80s (Cape Cod) to around 90 most locations. Wind WSW 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Partly sunny and hazy. Scattered showers & thunderstorms. Low 66. High 85.

  1. Thanks tk. Is it to early for a bermuda forcast. We will arrive on sunday and leave i think on tuesday night. Also this is a cruise so how should the ride down be. Thanks.

      1. Its location makes it a difficult forecast this far out. Let’s try for an outlook early to mid week so we can nail it down. Remind me. 🙂

      1. I believe that technically temps have to stay below 90 degrees to be considered a Top 10 day. However, with the dewpoints much lower maybe we can make a rare exception. We will see as the day wears on.

        1. Are there really parameters for a top 10 day. I just call any day that feels great a top 10. I love learning new things here

  2. Hi Vicki…. I saw your question on the previous blog about a drecheo. It is basically a widespread damaging wind event. It started in the midwest yesterday afternoon and traveled all the way and affected parts of the Mid Atlantic. In the state of Virginia this the biggest power outage that is not hurricane related. You got to feel for those folks who could be without power for several days and add to that temps up in the 90s close to 100. Using the thunderstorm index this was a level 3 thunderstorm outbreak since the impacts were widespread. Some of the areas in the Mid Atlantic affected last night could once again be impacted with another cluster of storms that once again could turn severe with damaging winds the main threat.
Up here thunderstorm index just at a 1 for tomorrow since I don’t expect severe weather.

    1. I just Read about it after I read your great explanation JJ. Thank you. How do the winds in differ from a hurricane. And what makes the entire event different from a severe Line of storms crossing the nation. I hope you don’t mind the questions.

      1. In some cases like what happened last night you saw those winds gust to tropical storm and even category 1 hurricane strenth which is why you see all the damage that has occurred. This did not happen as a result of tornadoes touching down and to me when you get these straight line wind damage or a derecheo as was the case here it could do similar damage to an EF 0 EF 1 tornado. To me what made this event different was the number of people it affected and the widespread damage that happened from parts of the midwest all the way to parts of the Mid Atlantic. I heard a number that close to 2 million people were without at power at the height of this.

        1. JJ CNN is saying 3.6 million with 1 mm in VA alone. Don’t know how accurate that is but the number is staggering. We are trying to reach my sister in law in Atlanta. From what I read I think she is south of this but we are not sure if she is flying and if so to where. She’s a flight attendant for delta

Thank you for answering all of my questions

          1. Wow! If she is flying into the D.C. area late night tonight that area could be affected once again by another thunderstorm complex. Watching the the golf tournament from Bethesda, MD over 5 hour delay to clear the trees from the fairways and greens. There off to the side so the tournament could resume.

            1. My husband just started watching – he records and misses commercials. I came on to post the mess there. They can’t even have spectators. The course is a mess

  3. The high/mid level clouds are occurring as expected, mainly north of the Mass Pike. Not really hurting the very nice summer day, just dimming the sun a bit, which is ok with me as I set up this water fight and BBQ about to take place.

    1. Hahaha. Do you use squirt guns. Water balloons. Hoses. Buckets or all of the aforementioned 🙂

    1. Happy early birthday Matt! Thats a day before mine actually. Love having a July bday, and with fireworks to boot! 🙂

  4. A few weeks back I think I went with 17 days of 90F at Logan…….

    which brings us to today…..

Now yesterday, at ob time, no ob was higher than 87F and yet, somewhere in between one of the obs, I guess it got to 89F, which I think is in the books as the official high.

Thus, today, with about 3 straight hourly obs of 89F, I think I will have to protest if somehow, the thermometer did not touch 90F in between one of those obs. 🙂 🙂 🙂

      1. Hmmmmm………..

        Tom for President.

Thus, when elected, I will use executive privilege to make the official high 90F myself.

                1. Sure..throw it in the shed, good to start the first fire with in September or whenever it cools off.

  5. We found my sister in law and she is in atllanta so safe from the storms but it is 106 outside her apartment. I equate that to our winter where we stay inside to be warm and now they stay inside to stay cool

  6. A severe threat for that same area today with some small cells popping up with tstorm warnings attached.

  7. A bit cooler than I had forecast for today, but I think that was for the better. The EURO is an ugly mess for July 4th at the moment…

    1. Ugh. That is not good news.

Scott I’m so glad you enjoyed your orientation. I am looking forward to your posts this fall.

      1. I will be jealous Scott when ur posting about getting snowed in while we get rain and sleet here. I went to college in upstate NY and always got all the good storms while it rained here.

  8. One thing to remember about the summer it rarely rains all day. Reading the NWS discussions it looks like a chance for afternoon or evening thunderstorms. I am not cancelling my cookout but if thunderstorms are still forecasted on the 4th I will keep an eye to the sky.
Virginia getting hit once again with severe weather with severe thunderstorm warnings and even a tornado warning which includes the city of Williamsburg where I will be vacationing at the end of July beginning of August.

  9. Ok…I guess I will call today a Top-10 day even though Logan officially hit 90. The 50 degree dewpoints and deep blue skies saved the day. Todd Gross usually considered a Top-10 day only when temps were between 70-80. He did make a few exceptions if temps were a bit higher (up to 85) as long as dewpoints were held in check. I don’t know what he would have thought about today, however. That 90 might have been a bit tough for him to swallow.

If I had a choice between a 95 temp and 52 dp vs. a 75 temp and 68 dp…I’ll take the former. Of course my “ideal” summer temp would be 76 temp and 50 dp. I can dream can’t I? 🙂

  10. After watching the national evening news, I will call my relatives who mostly live in Virginia tomorrow or Monday to see if they are ok. I had no idea it was so widespread and destructive there. This morning I was left with the impression that mostly DC was the only area affected. I guess it is like our June 1st was last year. 🙁

  11. Philip in Virgina it is the biggest power outage in state history not related to a hurricane.
More severe weather tonight in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia which is in the southeastern part of the state. Thankfully the tornado warning has been dropped but still severe thunderstorm warnings are up there.

    1. Jimmy, I noticed on radar that the most storms currently are located on a line from Richmond to Norfolk…right where my relatives live. :-0

      1. After looking at Accuweather’s radar, the storms are definitely severe. Intellicast doesn’t depict them nearly as well. Hope my relatives will get through ok.

        1. There is a whole Line of them from Richmond to Norfolk I’ll keep your relatives in my thoughts. Please let us know

            1. Ill keep an eye here and on the radar.

I hadn’t heard about the storms until Tom and JJ posted. Then we saw the damage at the PGA tournament in MD

              1. Great job by the grounds for getting that course ready to play after the mess that
was left. Despite a nearly 6 hour delay to the third round everyone was able to finish.

  12. The storms get more impressive throughout eastern Virginia as time goes on…scary.

This is why I hate nighttime thunderstorms the most.

    1. That’s what I was thinking about last night. Even I don’t like them severe at night. You can’t see what’s happening

  13. Thunderstorm Index today at a 1 for the areas that see thunderstorms fire since I don’t think they reach severe levels. Best chance to see a storm southern CT, RI, and MA. This certainly is a not a widespread event and I would not cancel any plans.
July 4th could have storms in the afternoon but as I said last night it rarely rains all day during the summer months. I am not cancelling my cookout but will keep an eye to the sky if I need to.

  14. Heading to Portsmouth NH for the air show today. I’ll be updating this evening with a few tweaks to the forecast but no big changes.

Very warm to hot week ahead.

Hopefully any t-storms are not ill-timed in terms of outdoor activities.

  15. AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

What is NOT a name for July’s full moon?
    A. Thunder
    B. Hay
    C. Sturgeon
    D. Buck

  16. We were at Rexham Beach this morning at 6am. It was a beautiful morning and the water was warmer than expected. We experienced the same thing in York Beach last weekend too. The water was much warmer than we have experienced in past years in August. I wonder why?

    1. Nice ! We went to Rexhame at noontime yesterday and struggled to find a spot, which I’ve never encountered before.

I agree, the water is very nice ! On Friday, I thought the water might be warm because there was a Seabreeze, which will direct a warm layer of water right to the beaches. However yesterday, the water was still pretty nice in spite of a strong land breeze, which usually causes upwelling and colder water……when we were camping last week, we met another family who were taking day trips to Rye Beach in NH and they were saying how nice the water is…..so, whatever is going on, the ocean has surely warmed up a lot in the last 2 wks along the Mass coastline.

    2. My kids were at Humarock and said the same thing. It was warmer than usual last August and then through the entire winter so I’m wondering what this August will bring

    3. Coastal…any of that nasty invasive seaweed that everyone is talking about down at Rexham? We go to Rexham quite often and imho it’s one of the top New England beaches. I’ve heard some horror stories about this seaweed that’s been showing up on New England beaches.

      1. Hi Keith, we noticed some seaweed but nothing unusual and none of the red seaweed I’ve heard about on the news.

  17. Last 5 June 90F days at Logan ( data from Taunton NWS climate section )

    June 2008 : 4 days
    June 2009 : 0 days ( a great summer of weather, eh ?)
    June 2010 : 4 days
    June 2011 : 1 day
    June 2012 : 4 days

    1. Thanks Tom. So we are right on average It’s funny how I don’t think of 90 and June.

    2. 2009 was crazy. Thunderstorms every day that summer until mid to late July and then I remember heat in August finally.

      1. Tom…I noticed something “interesting” in your stats and that is the following winters of June 2008 and 2010 were both snowy (65.9″= 2008-09 ; 81.0″ = 2010-11) and the following winters of June 2009 and 2011 (35.7″ = 2009-10; 9.3″ = 2011-12) speak for themselves. Is the trend a snow lovers friend? 😉

  18. Today (July 1) officially begins the 2012-2013 *snow* season! 🙂

    1936-37 = 9.0″
    1937-38 = 50.6″

    Will history repeat itself?? 😉

  19. I will start contacting my relatives in Virginia later today. I believe that if something really serious happened, I would have heard by now. Hopefully that is a good thing.

    I will keep everyone posted.

    1. Virginia once again the slight risk area for severe weather again today. Nasty line of storms last night wen through the Hampton Roads area and there was even a reported tornado in Hanover Virginia yesterday.

  20. 90F at Logan at 1pm. (#5 of the season already). Would we have thought that many by July 1st two weeks ago when the daily highs along the coast were struggling to get to 60F ?

The 12z GFS is out and I’m interested to see the 12z EURO. At 500mb on the GFS, the pattern looks essentially the same to the one we have today, out to mid July.

The 850mb temps are forecasted to be consistently around 15c, with one or 2 days being around 12c and one or two days being around 18c.

The implications…..a lot of days where the thermometer is going to be close to 90F. We may be headed for a high seasonal total of 90F days……

See a severe thunderstorm watch out for CT and cells starting to pop. Also cells starting to pop in northern New England.

    1. It might be interesting to see how they hold together and what might pop further east…..

Looking at the surface winds….there’s convergence in the Mass Pike area…as south of that line, the surface winds are a bit more west/southwest and north of that line, they are a bit more west/northwest.

      1. There are a few warning Boxes with the CT storms and a cell that popped up in the SW corner of MA.

        1. Huge dark towering cumulus cloud, taking up 1/3 of southern sky, headed for maybe Duxbury. Surprised something not showing on radar.

          1. There it goes on the radar…..it is developing so quickly !!!! we can hear thunder and it is amazingly dark to our south.

  21. Everything just south of us so far but sky went from blue with white clouds to overcast about 45 minutes ago

  22. Just got off the phone with my uncle in Virginia and everyone is fine. None of my relatives in the state lost power or suffered any damage. There were more big boomers last evening. However, a cousin who lives in Maryland lost her power and not expected to get it back until next week. She and one of her sons are staying at a hotel for now. Eventually they will hook up a generator. It seems MD and NJ got hit pretty hard as well. My relatives will still have to go through 100+ degree heat but at least they have A/C.

    Thanks for everyone’s concern! 🙂

    1. Glad to hear that Philip. Thank you

Thunder south of the pike but nothing heading in this direction

    1. Dark here in Hingham too…with rain and storms not far south of me. A good size storm blew up over Plymouth in the last 20 minutes or so.

    1. I know from having horses it’s time for the second cut for hay and thought the sturgeon ran in the fall. Or is it spring. Thunder is now but I wasn’t sure about buck either somi guessed I love quizzes. We watch jeopardy every night and 90% of my answers are guesses . Thanks for taking the time to post the quizzes

  23. went to the beach and it was really nice the car measured the hight to be about 90 at salisbury. Also anyone have a list of towns that are having fireworks.

  24. Little off today with the thunderstorm prediction when parts of RI and Southeastern MA saw level 2 thunderstorm activity.
Keeping an eye on Wednesday as there will be plenty of instability around. If the sun comes out and the front comes through during peak heating then mother nature could give us some natural fireworks for the 4th.

    1. My grandson is at the age where he hates loud noises so chances are he’d be happier with mother nature than manmade. I hope for all of those who have holiday plans that mother nature is kind

  25. Good morning everyone!

Fantastic day at Portsmouth NH for the air show yesterday. Not only did I get to see the show but I was able to view the thunderstorms developing over southern Maine, moving into the Portland area, as well as the cloud shield from the severe storms over far southern New England (sky did darken visibly to the south even in the area I was in).

As most of you know, I’m also a pyromaniac (read as I love going to fireworks displays). Anyway, the Braintree display on Saturday night was the best one I have seen there in 3 years, and last night I found myself in Carlisle MA, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Old Home Day. Insane fireworks display finished that off about 10PM. My fireworks plans for this week take me to Danvers Tuesday, Boston Wednesday, Lexington Thursday, possibly Brockton Friday if I feel like driving that far south of Boston after a day at Hampton Beach NH, and Middleton on Saturday. Weather should pan out for most of these. Boston does theirs rain or not, only postponing in the event of severe weather (1992 is the only year they waited until July 5). A little stat: The last time July 4th was on a Wednesday, Boston’s fireworks were set off in a steady, soaking rain that night. Here we go, Wednesday again. Hmmmm. Maybe this time won’t be quite that bad and any showers/storms around will be gone by then. Let’s see what nature has to say about it.

The blog is now updated. Thanks for being patient with my updates as I roam around southern New England this week having a grand old time. 😉
