Tropical Toss

11:50PM

Well for a few days I’ve been calling for dry weather Monday and Tuesday, and for the most part that continues to be the case. However, a small tropical-type low pressure area will come northward in the western Atlantic on Tuesday and Tuesday night and scrape Cape Cod and the Islands with a shield of rain during this time. I’m not expecting this rain to make it all the way to Boston. It should stay just offshore. Watching it, in case…

As August gets underway, warmth and humidity will be the general rule, along with a daily risk of showers and thunderstorms, but this risk will not be too high, and much of the time any given location will be rain-free. We do, however, have to watch for the possibility of one more batch of tropical moisture near Cape Cod and the Islands late Thursday or Thursday night.

Updated forecast for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH…

OVERNIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 61-66. Wind light variable.

TUESDAY: Partly sunny to mostly cloudy. Rain or showers developing during the afternoon over Cape Cod and the Islands. Highs from the middle 70s to lower 80s, coolest in coastal areas. Wind variable to SE 5-15 MPH, becoming more E 10-20 MPH over Cape Cod and Islands late.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. A period of rain and possible thunder Cape Cod and Islands. Some rain or showers may expand across southeastern MA perhaps up to near Boston briefly. Lows 63-68. Wind E 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, mainly near 495 north of the Mass Pike through southern NH. Highs from the middle 70s to lower 80s. Wind variable 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Isolated showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Slight chance of rain Cape Cod and Islands at night. Low 65. High 82.

FRIDAY: Partly sunny. Isolated PM thunderstorms. Low 65. High 85.

SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 66. High 87.

SUNDAY: Partly sunny. Late-day thunderstorms. Low 67. High 84.

  1. Thanks TK !

Milky cloud over on the south shore.

Thunderstorms seem to have increased some around the central Atlantic disturbance. Will be interesting to see if this is just temporary or a trend.

  2. If today was the last day of January instead of July, the Cape would probably be in for some good snows with parts of SE MA getting at least some scraps. Unfortunately, those on vacation on the Cape could be in for some wet, lousy conditions albeit fairly temporary.

    1. sighhhh – I love the word SNOW

I don’t mind a good storm (temporary being the key word) when we are at the beach. I love to watch the ocean. It gets within feet of the house we stay in.

      1. any chance the storm continues to move straight north like it is doing right and effect most of eastern mass. or is it going to shift more of an east or northeast track

  3. Ace I think the nam as usual is probably overdone. The HPC mentioned that it was having issues 🙂

    1. I hope so, don’t want to have to put the umbrella in the golf bag tonight, its heavy!

  4. I think it rains just not as much as the nam is projecting. The euro also now brings in more precip to eastern areas.

  5. Starting to rain in Marshfield, after misting since about 4pm.

Kind of neat to look at a northeastern radar mosaic and see the coastal storm’s rains and only a few hundred miles west, see lots of thunderstorms in western NY State.

By satellite appearances, I think that central Atlantic disturbance has continued to organize and I wonder if the NHC will raise its chances of developing into a depression on its 8pm update.

    1. Yes, very non like July weather to end the month…..

That rain band setting up between Martha’s Vineyard and New Bedford looks pretty intense. Lots of moderate rain reports down there.

      1. seems like an early october rain storm raw and clouds for most but rain for eastern mass being possible been having an east wind all day temp did not get over 71 degrees i need 5 more 90 degree days in order for my prediction to be right

  6. Closing out July…… (climate data from Taunton NWS climate section)

Logan has had (10) days of 90F or higher…….by contrast….

Chicago has had (35) days of 90F or higher and some of those have been over 100F.

      1. Ugh for Logan as well. My bet is that the interior suburbs had a lot more than 10 days of 90+. Thank you seabreeze.

  7. I haven’t been around to update until now…

Obviously the rain made it to Boston. NAM wins for placement, but won’t win for it’s big amounts.

    Full update soon!

    1. Of course, NWS’s point forecast still calls for “a chance of showers, mainly after midnight” … Oops!

        1. Great sleeping night. I like the summer nights but most of all the early nights in fall feel like a warm blanket on earth. And I love seeing lights on in houses as everyone gets ready for dinner. Sappy I know 🙂

          1. As far as the earlier sunsets are concerned, the sunrises started getting later as far back as the end of June. 🙁

              1. Hahahahahahahaha. I’m doubled over here laughing. Can’t blame you tom. I always hated it when I knew my kids had to go back to school. This year my oldest grandchild starts school. I’m trying really hard not to think about that

                1. Vicki, you were very unusual. Most parents are counting down the days until their kids go back to school then keeping their fingers crossed for no snow days ahead for the upcoming school year. 😉

  8. Just looking at the latest radar, much of eastern MA would be experiencing a lovely snowy evening only if…..

Let us hope for a similar scenario 5-7 months from now. 😉

  9. I only have momentary lament about earlier sunsets. I just accept what is natural. All it tells me is that things are happening as they should be. 🙂

      1. I hope its ok that I answer….(I love this topic !)

Solar noon, the time the sun reaches its highest point daily is not the same every day.

Consider looking at June 25th and say it loses 12 seconds of daylight. It seems reasonable to expect then that on June 25th, the sunrise would be 6 seconds later and the sunset would be 6 seconds earlier.

However, on June 25th, solar noon arrives about 10 seconds later then it did on June 24th, meaning there’s a 10 second shift forward on the clock as to when you receive all of June 25th’s daylight. So….the sun rises 16 seconds later (6+10) and the sunset occurs 4 seconds later (-6 + 10). A net loss of 12 seconds, but still a later sunset after the solstice.

This happens other times during the year. Its why the earliest sunset is around Dec. 10 and why the latest sunrise is around January 4th. In August, the solar day starts coming earlier each day, which gives the sunset loss the double whammy of losing time due to losing daylight and the shifting of the day’s available light to an earlier part of the day.

  10. Pouring here in JP. Clearly the NAM was not far off in precip for the immediate coast. I would guess at least .75 so far.

    1. It was raining very hard at Fenway 45 minutes ago. The umpires tried to play thru, but the field was going downhill fast. Critical point too, as Tigers had bases loaded with 2 outs, with Sox ahead by 3.

  11. This would have been one of those surprise “storms” that no one saw coming. Starting as a few flurries then all of a sudden u look out and there’s 6″ of snow on the ground and it’s still coming down…

  12. .25 so far here in North Attleboro. Crazy that 20 miles east of here in Middleboro, amounts are going over an inch.

Lets hope for that winter repeat of something like this with cold air in place.

Hope the weather gets nicer for the rest of your time off Hadi!

  13. I heard 2-3 inches of rain on the south shore – you guys got walloped. Wow.

    Good morning everyone!
