The Week Ahead

1:34AM

The Final Five: The home stretch of August has arrived. These final 5 days will be largely uneventful in southern New England, with only Tuesday being the day for unsettled weather, showers and thunderstorms as a cold front pushes through the region. Ahead of this front, a warm day starts the week today. Behind it, a cooler and drier day is expected Wednesday. Warmth returns to the region Thursday and Friday as high pressure dominates at both the surface and upper levels.

Labor Day Weekend: Obviously this 3-day period of September 1 to 3 is a little far away for great detail, but at this point it looks like it will start out on the hot side Saturday. Whether it stays that way all the way through the long weekend is uncertain, and will depend somewhat on what happens with the track of Isaac and the remains of this tropical cyclone, which is expected to hit the Gulf Coast in the next few days. See the comments below this entry for what will be ongoing discussion on this storm.

  1. Thoughts on Isaac: Just keeping it simple. My feeling is Isaac will end up more on the right side of “the cone of uncertainty” accompanying the official forecast track. I think we see the storm stay a little weaker with a landfall late Tuesday or early Wednesday in either Alabama or the western Panhandle of Florida. Of course, areas to the west of here in Mississippi and Louisiana should not let their guard down whatsoever.

For now, I think the worst of wind and storm surge will be on the Florida Panhandle Coast late Tuesday and early Wednesday as a Category 1 or weak Category 2 hurricane impacts the region. Hoping that it doesn’t rapidly intensify just before landfall.

  2. Thanks TK. I hear mandatory evacs have been issued in some coastal areas. I never understand why any area waits. SC did ok for Hugo but after was far more diligent.

  3. Anyone know what tall ship is in Boston or the area? We just saw one go by on the horizon. Sadly not under sail. Looked like a pirate ship. I’m thinking jack sparrow. Well a girl can dream right :)))

    1. Yes Matt, I see what you mean. It almost looks like two separate tropical systems right next to each other developing at the same time. Quite interesting to say the least. ❓

  4. As for Isaac, Henry Margusity this morning admitted it was a stupid idea that the storm was going to track to the east of Florida and up the east coast. He also said that the water temps just south of Louisiana are relatively cool so it will be unlikely that Isaac will come ashore as anything higher than a Category 1 hurricane.

Let us hope that New Orleans is much better prepared than 7 years ago…to the date in fact of Katrina. I would think they should be.

  5. Clouds moving in here from southwest. Breeze which was from E SE all morning has shifted to W slightly SW and stronger.

Any chance remnants of Isaac get here as rain and if so how far out

Matt can’t get your link on my phone 🙁

  6. These tornadoes with these tropical systems are weak EF0 EF1 and are rain wrapped so your not going to see the tornado. There also isolated but if it hits your neighborhood you will know it.

  7. Wed morning could get as low as 50 degrees in some of the normal colder spots, I think my house see’s 52-53 degrees, Boston looks like it could get down to 58-59 degrees, 🙂

  8. Recon plane : 982 mb, max flight wind 74 knots. Will be interesting to see the winds on thee advisory….probably bumped up to 70 and maybe even 75, making it a hurricane. We shall see.

  9. Can’t help it – w/all the colors, infrared radars and such, I still like looking at the old-fashioned satellite loops. Sometimes, to me anyway, they can show things more clearly. Whatever – just want to share this.

Isaac winds now at 70 mph and TWC forecasting storm to hit as a Cat 2 . I don’t know. Time will tell.

Around here, looks like some showers out in WMA.

  10. Sadly can’t see any links so will rely on commentary. Wind strong off land with heavier clouds moving in. May make for interesting sunset or a bust.

  11. Pete has an awesome seven day up. After small bump tomorrow , we warm up. I can’t wait till Friday. Charlie I bet we hit 90 someplace this week. That would be great , right pal.

    1. Ummmm out of curiosity i can’t help wondering why you’d want anything as perfect as the weather we’ve been having to change. It’s incredible

  12. There were hints briefly yesterday that there was a possibility of Isaac’s remnants would ruin our Labor Day. The current forecasts now have that scenario off the table. This is excellent news since it would be a shame to end the summer on a wet, nasty note. I am planning my farewell to summer BBQ as I always do. 🙂

    1. I agree. As a kid growing up in Marshfield, I remember labor day weekends as cool and overcast, just always seemed that way. I so welcome a warm one. I have huge plans of grilling, relaxing and I hope no company, lol. Well it is true.

  13. Anyone else think thats a small eye thats been in the last 15 to 30 minutes of satellite pictures on Isaac………..or……….dry air getting into the center thats giving that illusion ?
