Heat Flash Friday / Top 10 Weekend

4:26PM

I could write a repeat of yesterday’s blog, because nothing has really changed in the outlook at all. So the forecast will be almost a carbon copy, minus minor tweaks. Let’s summarize and look ahead a bit in short-format before updating.

Friday: Hot & windy but not too humid.

Labor Day Weekend: Cooling trend, great weather!

Isaac: Spinning down over the South, and all we will hear from it is some remnant moisture in the form of showers next Tuesday.

Kirk: A hurricane that will stay way out to sea and we’ll never hear from it.

Leslie: A tropicalΒ  storm, eventually a hurricane, but another fish storm,Β  probably never even making it as far west as Bermuda.

Did they skip J? No, Joyce already happened, but nobody noticed… πŸ˜‰

Back at home next week: Maybe a brief shot of very cool air around the middle to end of next week but the overall pattern will still feature above normal temperatures during the next 2 weeks.

Forecast for eastern MA, southern NH, & our dear friends in RI too. πŸ™‚

  1. There appears to be some high altitude smoke in the sky this evening. Not really sure where it’s coming from but there are fires upstream in the northern Rockies and Canadian Prairies, and a closer one in Upstate NY. It’s giving the sky a hazy “1970s” look on this summer evening.

    1. You were just saying how the sky looked in past years with all the haze, and where it went, you were heard.

  2. Thanks TK…it has certainly been a great week for vacation. We went to Canobie Lake Park yesterday and could not have asked for a better weather day. We also did a whale watch on Monday and I was surprised at how rough the seas were. There was a pretty strong southwest wind out on Stellwagon Bank and our boat was rocking and rolling. However the whales must like the wind because they were EVERYWHERE!

    1. Sue I’m do glad you saw whales – lots of whales. It sure had been a perfect vacation week – two really.

  3. Thanks tk, I said 2 weeks ago no more 90 degree days, well I will be off 1 day,, tommorrow, after that going into the 2nd week of Sept with temps in the upper 70’s, I’m just thankfull it’s not hot anymore I dislike 90 degree days alot and it seemed like it was around 90 the whole much of July and early aug and then it started to change thankfully, hope all is well πŸ™‚

    1. I am not a fan of 90’s either Charlie. I was just telling a friend that I am sad to see summer go but do look forward to sweathshirts, football, and Sunday dinners consisting of stews and casseroles!

  4. I am not a fan of the heat and humidity. I look forward to those cool crisp autumn days and then the season that follows winter and hopefully we get some good Noreaster’s.

  5. As I said yesterday I hope AccuWeather and The Farmers’ Almanac are right with their forecasts for the upcoming winter calling for above normal snowfall.

    1. Brett Anderson predicts above normal temps for much of northern and eastern Canada for the upcoming fall. Only extreme western sections of Canada will have below normal temps. To me, this may not bode well for us in NE for the upcoming winter yet again. Where will our cold air source come from should this verify??

So far, I do not have much confidence even for “normal” snowfall.

      1. It’s going to be real bad this winter Phil after a very warm fall. 100 inches is my call for Boston starting second week of december, file this.

  6. Kevin Lemanowicz said that Leslie “could” be a threat to the east coast next week. I had my fill of hurricanes with Irene last year.

  7. Whew eeee. Wind is literally whistling they here tonight. Off the land. We were able to have a beach fire and roast marshmallows earlier πŸ™‚

  8. I do believe we are in for below normal snowfall and average to slightly above average temperatures, If I had to guess right now I would guess 17.4 inches of snow, and 2/3’s of it will fall in late Jan early Feb, have a good night πŸ™‚

    1. I think it’s very possible that this year we could have 55-60 degree ocean water on Thanksgiving which would be 8-10 degrees above normal to that date πŸ™‚

  9. Most if the overnight/morning guidance now has Leslie moving west of Bermuda and in a very interesting location off the east coast. I wouldn’t count out Kevin’s prediction just yet. The remnants of Issac will be well out of here by then and the trough has been slower to progress east with each run. I wouldnt rule anything out at this point

  10. Brett Anderson mentioned in his latest blog that he believes that it will be a “weak” El Nino going into this upcoming winter. What does this mean in terms of snow and/or cold for us?

I used to think I pretty much understood La Nina and El Nino but with so many different extremes the last few years I can’t tell what future types of weather is expected from season to season anymore.

      1. This time last year they were predicting a snowy winter. I’m holding out for longshots prediction πŸ˜‰

    1. It’s because El Nino and La Nina themselves do not determine a season’s weather. They are just part of a large collection of factors.

  11. El Nino is just one of many things to look at when trying to figure out what kind of winter we are going to have.
We need the NAO to be negative and the northern and southern brances to phase and track to the benchmark aka the sweet spot to get big time snow events in SNE.
I still think Leslie is a fish storm but I will still keep an eye on it just in case the track changes. Look what happened with Issac we went from an impact on the east coast of Florida to the west coast of Florida to the panhandle and it ended up in making landfall in Louisiana.

    1. JJ is correct. And it’s not only just ENSO’s phase and NAO but AO, PDO, QBO, PNA, among others. Keep in mind we are not in solar min anymore, and this will be a factor against lots of snow this winter. You’ll have to hope that enough other of the indicies are in the right phases if you are hoping for a snowy winter.

      1. Tk of course this is my oppinion, but I think we have a record breaking winter this year. Like the ones we had years ago. I just have this funny feeling. On another note cant believe the pats cut branch.

        1. My “official” winter forecast will be out sometime after November 1. I’m going to be speaking to Barry Burbank in person in late October and I’d like to compare ideas with him before I venture down that road.

I blew last year’s forecast so badly I’m not letting that happen again.

              1. I need to email him anyway to thank him for keeping the storms away while we are here. TK a special thanks to you too πŸ™‚ πŸ˜‰

  12. It would be nice if some of our local tv mets chime in here on the blog on occasion especially when major winter storms are on the horizon. In fact, I would go so far as consider it an honor. Pass the word on to them TK! πŸ™‚

    1. I would as well. I can send link to Pete. Not sure if he has it already and know they are all busy but can’t hurt

      1. Harvey is a very friendly guy in person. Unlike Al, he’s very much as he appears on TV. Al Kaprelian is a very shy and quiet man off camera. He’s friendly, just quiet.

        1. I met Harvey at parties multiple times in the 80s. He is a close friend of the dad of one of my oldests best friends back then. I totally agree that he is as he appears. No airs.

    2. I can tell them about it. The entire WBZ weather team knows about it. I’m not sure if some of the stations have policies prohibiting the met’s from commenting on blogs such as this. That may be the case.

  13. TK didn’t say one word till tonight. As I’ve said I am
Somewhat superstitious id say even better than a top 10 weekend that it’s been a top 10 two weeks.

      1. Haha. Mac too. Orange and all. Must be a golfer thing. He’s mentioned several times this week he’s drinking blue moon for a good reason πŸ˜‰

      1. Hey John, Thanks! That job will keep a crew of guys working for a year, which is a great to know they will be able to provide for their families. My new job has me leaving the house at 5am and returning home at 5pm. Those are my short days. I am going to class two nights a week for my electrical journeyman license. Those nights I don’t get home until 9pm. Tough cause I don’t see my kids those days but I’m doing it for them so it will be worth it in the long run.

        1. It will be worth it. My short day is leaving at 5 and returning at 5pm. Long day leave at 2am And home at
5pm. Good luck with the studies. That and plumbing really good fields.

    1. Hows the baby Hadi? Growing too quickly I bet. My oldest is here this week with her three year old and the new baby who is nearly six months.

  14. Happy meteorological fall! Usually I am a little depressed to see the summer end. Not this year. In my opinion, we had enough of the hazy, hot and humid weather to make it feel like a real summer. Now I am looking forward to autumn and all the trimmings: colorful foliage (wonder how that will turn out this season); cold and frosty mornings; the Patriots; Thanksgiving. Then onto winter. Here’s hoping we get sufficient snow this year – we watch Ice Road Truckers on tv sometimes. At one point I said to my husband as we watched it on tv – “doesn’t all that snow look nice?” Yeah – I know. Shoveling the snow and our heating bills aren’t fun – but we missed a winter last year. We need a good snowy winter this year so we can welcome next spring! πŸ™‚ Enjoy the rest of the wknd., all!

    1. You too Rainshine. Fall and Spring are my favorite times of year. My favorite type of day is low humidity and in the mid 70’s. I agree this summer did have its fair share of hazy, hot and humid. Enjoy this beautiful weekend before the rain that we are now in need of gets here on Tuesday and Wednesday.

      1. Thanks, North. I love all the seasons – for all their changes. Can’t say what is my favorite season – it varies. But I s’pose it probably would have to be Fall. Besides it makes the best hiking and walking weather (for me, anyway – will have to get back to hiking again) it could be still memories of my youth when school would start and everything seemed brand new. Enjoy the wknd.!

      1. Vicki – didn’t mean to take anything away from you – just wanted to say hi to Hadi. Glad you had a good vacation.

        1. Hah. You are so kind. Please never worry. We are on our way home. It’s always sad. We talk more and more about looking for a small place down here – ocean view but not where it can be swept out to sea. Not sure there is such an animal!!!

  15. Update posted!

I’ll be checking in periodically throughout the weekend. Staying local for the most part. A trip up to Gloucester for food, a lighted boat parade, and fireworks this evening, and to Newburyport Sunday afternoon and Hampton Beach for fireworks Sunday evening.

Hope everybody has a great weekend!
