Forward Then Backward

3:17PM

Temperatures and weather will go forward (cooler Autumn-like air for the last couple full days of Summer) and backward (warming up as Autumn begins Saturday) in the short term, and the longer term as well (additional cool shot early next week, then another warm up as we wind down the days of September). Weather systems going slowly forward right now will also slide backward a little bit before too long.

With the strong winds and heavy rain of Tuesday night and early Wednesday now a thing of the past (except for lingering damage cleanup and the last of power being restored to some areas that lost it), a shot of chilly and dry air is moving in and will last through Thursday. The front that caused the problems is lingering just offshore and will back westward toward the coast on Friday, tossing some clouds back at these areas, including the chance of some light rain or showers over at least Cape Cod. For now, I feel any shower activityΒ  mayΒ  just lick at the coastline of eastern MA and Seacoast NH but should stay offshore for the most part.

By Saturday, a large scale trough will be digging through the Midwest, but it will remain there into early next week, sending only a frontal system eastward into New England, bringing a warm up ahead of it Saturday, showers Saturday night and early Sunday, then a cool-down later Sunday.

A peek into next week shows a cool shot for Monday, a bit of a battle at midweek, and an eventual warm up.

Forecast for eastern MA, southern NH, and RI…

    1. I’m optimistic, but it’s still 4 days away. NWS keeps a shower threat through Sunday night. I think things are more progressive than that.

      1. Thanks Tk. The town turned 300 this year. There have been events all year. This parade is the most anticipated. Going to be like 100 floats, and like 60 bands from all over. The morning starts with a 5k road race.

        1. That’s a big one. Woburn’s Halloween parade on the last Sunday of October every year is usually around 20 bands and 40 floats. Some years it manages to be bigger. It takes about 90 minutes to pass so I can only imagine how long that parade is going to be!

          1. Hi Sue- starts sunday afternoon at 1pm. starts up by high school on learning way and ends at the town green, that is located across from the big white church, its called first church. roads are closed from 1-4pm. sue if your going I would go early. This has been the talk of the town since spring, I heard it is going to be huge. They have 80 registered floats but think it will be 100.

  1. The up an down temps do make sense for this time of year to end September and begin October. I am noticing some trees in and around Boston getting ready to burst into color. I have a good feeling that foliage overall will be much earlier compared to last year. It will be interesting though if foliage in general from now on will always be a bit later than in years past.

  2. According to Brett Anderson’s blog, much of Canada will have unseasonably warm temps through mid-October. From my perspective, one has to wonder where our cold will come from this upcoming winter. IIRC from his past blogs, it is suggested that well above normal temps will dominate for the forseeable future.

    1. We don’t need a cold winter for a snowy one. I do though have the cold as part of my winter forcast.I really believe my forcast Will hold.

  3. Antarctica has been undergoing near record cold during their winter. So far, September has been averaging nearly 7 degrees below normal.

This is why I can’t jump on the global warming bandwagon just yet.

    1. I Agee with the cycles but have trouble believing all of the harm we have done to this planet and to our atmosphere has not had an effect. Maybe we havnt done enough harm and i aure hope we have not but if we do not stop it I firmly believe we will destroy what we have. All of it of course is opinion and one opinion is always as valid as the other

  4. Hi Vicki, I just read your post asking about the puppy on the last blog. She is doing better. Two days after we got her, she developed kennel cough and then we found out she had some stomach issues too! Poor thing is on two antibiotics and one other tablet too. She she is finally on the mend. She is doing great at night training, she is just having trouble during the day.

    1. I’m so sorry to hear about the problems. I feel as if stomach issues are becoming so common. Night is key You can deal with day of you have sleep. Good luck. It is a special time.

  5. I saw Shelby Scott’s name mentioned in the previous post. I haven’t seen or heard her name in a long time. Does anyone know if she still amongst the living?

IIRC she wore different color knit caps on-air depending on the type of storm…I don’t recall which colors though. I vaguely remember Shelby when she started out on the noon news at the anchor desk with Jack Chase in the mid-1960’s.

  6. I find it interesting that it is just as cold if not colder in Antarctica and yet in the Arctic icebergs are melting like crazy.

    1. the difference is that the arctic is all sea ice while in ANarctica alot of that ice is on land. alot of the ice on the water down there is also melting. It is also their “spring” right now so they just came out of winter

  7. Pete’s evening blog says that there is no frost anytime soon for SNE. Based on TK’s forecast I certainly concur. Hopefully NNE will be able to elimate EEE tonight in some areas.

    1. Philip I’m curious. Do you know what happens to mosquitoes in climates where there is no frost ? I’m so frustrated. As I’ve said before I love sitting outside. And this time of year especially sitting on the deck with a fire in the fire pit is a treat. But we don’t dare go out. I should not complain because we have the porch but I’m guessing mac will not be pleased with me of I light a fire on the porch

      1. Vicki, I have no idea for sure what happens in those warm climates…I can only assume the mosquitoes just keep buzzing away spreading the virus constantly. I really doubt anything other than freeze and/or frost can kill them, unfortuately.

      2. they become huge and if you are bitten by one it actually hurts instead of it just being itchy believe me i know. when i went to st johns one bit my mom and it was painful and then a hugered bump formed where the bite was and it was at least 2 times larger than what a mosquito does up here. I am having not problem in my back yard i hope it is because the marsh. and like philip said diseases

  8. There is no doubt that global warming is real. Don’t be fooled into thinking that’s it’s not. Just ask the polar bears in the Arctic:). It has never been this bad, period!! Warmest year on record to boot. The artic ice shelf is shrinking at a pace unlike any other time.

  9. JJ there is no balance in our world climate. Don’t only look at what’s occurring here in the US. Trust me in I travel the world and talk to people who travel the world and there is no question that we are at perilous point. Look at Sub-Sarah Aftrica for example.

    1. Hadi, how do you explain the Antarctic remaining cold? I always assumed that both poles would start melting during the global warming phase.

      1. We’ve discovered polar ice-free periods long before man. Cyclic warming and cooling have taken place since the beginning of time.

Besides, we don’t want to see the climate in balance. If it was, it means something is drastically wrong with the interaction of our atmosphere and the sun. πŸ™‚

        1. The difference is TK is that before man there was no one to pollute and destroy the earth and atmosphere. I agree with Hadi. I believe we are seeing cyclical changes but I worry that they cannot rebound to normal levels because of what we have done and continue to do. IMHO that is the catch 22.

          1. Vicki, another very important item that we must discuss with this issue, one that holds a lot of weight is that before man we had no satellites. πŸ™‚ Man has not been on earth long enough to register long term patterns (10,000 years at a time). No doubt we have done damage but there is no way to gauge this. Yes the snow pack (glaciers) are melting, yes we have seen some change in our modern era but what happened 10,000 to 100,000+ years ago? Why is there oil in northern canada / artic? Is it cold there? How is oil created? Climate change is inevitable but it takes a long long time. Global Alarmist is simply a trendy thing now a days. One that is backed by $$$$

            Good day all!

            1. That’s the problem, Coastal – we have no way to gauge the harm we have done, yet we continue to do it. Doesnt make sense to me since we know we are harming our earth. It’s all backed by dollars – the concept of global warming and the refusal to stop doing harm. Remember the lobbists/special interests who will not allow alternative fuels/energies to be produced.

  10. Some “coolness” in Northern New England this AM…..

    Whitefield, NH … 31F, Berlin, NH .. 33F, Houlton, ME…31F, Presque Isle, ME… 32F

Meanwhile, with a light wind off the water, Marshfield is 57F

Of course, its quite possible at 2 pm this afternoon, the four locations in NH and ME have a warmer temp than Marshfield as I doubt there’ll be much of a diurnal temp rise along the coast today.

  11. Hopefully will have a wonderful display of fall colors to enjoy. Last year the foliage was not that great. I have noticed some leaves have started to change colors.

  12. This is when I come in and say I don’t believe there r many 80 degrees left, u can never rule them out until mid to late oct but they r numbered, another 3-4 weeks and 70+ will be numbered πŸ™‚

    1. I think we have ONE 80+ left. πŸ˜‰ But we will still break 70 a number of times, especially next week and early October.

  13. Fall is one of my favorite seasons. The only issue are the later sunrises which are currently at 6:30 am. In a few weeks, it won’t rise until the local tv news ends.

        1. Thanks, Charlie – sorry for having to ask for a specific number πŸ™ The four guesses so far have been right around the same area.

  14. I’d like to thank all of you for keeping things civil here, despite obvious differences of opinion (global warming, snow amounts, etc.) … This was one of the main visions for this blog. Discuss, agree, disagree, somewhere in between, but always remain civil. Obviously there are some people who would probably not be sending each other birthday cards or hanging out if this were in person, but that’s fine. Keep it up everyone. πŸ™‚

    1. Imcant think of a person here I would not send a birthday card to :). I agree about the discussion. It’s fun and it as if we are sitting in the same room. I think that’s not typical for most blogs where people say things using a keyboard they would never say face to face. As always thank you TK for the opportunity

      1. HAHAHA I know you’d send one to everyone. Just alluding to the fact that not everybody “gets along famously” but for the most part we manage to coexist here. πŸ™‚

  15. Bio test tomorrow english paper due tuesday, sociology debate tuesday math test thursday well here goes my weekend. I wanted to bike i guess not.

    1. Sometimes I miss those days, then I come to my senses, lol. Good luck Matt, it will all be worth it πŸ™‚

        1. They have at least a year before they can pay of enough school loans to buy a house. And he has to find a permanent job. Right now in this economy he’s happy to have been hired for a decent job right away. They really really want to settle in Pembroke but only time will tell

      1. Neither won – both were awful in what i hoped would be a great debate although brown was better which isn’t saying much

    1. Not knocking anyone’s political viewpoints here (and I’m not a Mitt supporter at all and I’m only lukewarm toward Obama) but I run a few radio lists and forums and two topics we stay away from are politics and religion. Someone always ends up ticked off, words fly and a general feeling of nastiness pervades. So we always try to nip it in the bud. Just my humble two cents on this subject.

        1. Not trying to deny anyone their freedom of speech. Just my experience on forums and lists. IIRC the BZ boards turned pretty ugly when stuff like that happens.

          1. It’s good advice Keith and I totally agree. I think the global warming topic is a related topic to weather but as far as politics and religion it can and does get nasty. I enjoy blogging but some things have their place as you have said.
