The Week Ahead

9:03PM

The first full week of Autumn 2012 is underway.

These will be the players: Disturbance tracking west to east across the region Monday, high pressure building quickly overhead then offshore Tuesday, cold front approaching and crossing the region from west to east Wednesday, high pressure building in from the west Thursday then offshore Friday into the weekend while disturbances try to approach from the west and south later in the weekend.

This is how I expect it to play out for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH:

OVERNIGHT: Clear. Lows from near 40 deepest valleys to lower 50s urban centers. Wind NW under 10 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows upper 30s deepest valleys to near 50 at the shore. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 68-73. Wind SW 10-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Low 56. High 72.

  1. I see you listed the players for the season 😉 What’s the game? Well…we know it’s not Hockey…not if it’s the Bruins 😉

  2. Thanks TK.
North I clicked on the site for the tropics and I was surprised to see Nadine still out there. This system has been out there for close to two weeks.

  3. Did anyone notice the stupid calls and think the new refs should be replaced or even better get the original refs. That field go was not in it was out!!Those refs were against us. those ravens got out of so many things. We got called out for stuff that was nothin.Even with all the bogus calls we should have still won since that ball was out. Now we are behind the jets and Buffalo!!!!!!

    1. Matt it’s hard to tell if the ball was out which if I understand correctly makes it nonreviewable. That being said, it’s also my understanding that the refs only demand is their pension plan is continued and not frozen. I could be wrong but if not, it doesn’t seem an unreasonable demand. As far As Belichick (sp?) grabbing the ref…………..ugh. Tom is right. We absolutely have to win next week.

    1. yes…its milder in Barrow, AK and warmer further east on the extreme northwest Canadian coast (near the Arctic Ocean). Very interesting………

  4. Thanks, TK. I did visit your friend’s blog – she has a great future as a writer! Actually, she is already a great writer! And from a “wannabe writer” like me – I’m kind of jealous! 🙂

Really chilly out this morning. Did anyone see any frost? I don’t think the temp. got cold enough for that around here.

Not going to make any comments about the Patriots. Just this one – 🙁

    1. Thank you rainshine! (I am the “friend” with the blog) No need to be jealous! I’m sure you’re writing is great! I’d love to see some of it!

      1. Thanks, Emily! I thought it might be you but I wasn’t sure. I have tried writing through the years but some people say I use too many adjectives, too much description. When I was in high school I took a writing course and wrote a story about mannequins that came alive in a department store. But my teacher said my story was too childish. I think by now someone else has written a story like that! 🙂 Anyway, keep up the good work, Emily! I still like to write for my own enjoyment – but I think you definitely have the potential to be a great writer!

        1. Rainshine. Just listen to you. My high school typing teacher told my mom to never let me do anything with typing. I believe I said I went to Gibbs. I graduated with a top certification in my class in typing having taken the minimal tests I love the idea of your story and if that was high school can only imagine your ideas now.

I didn’t see the blog address Emily. Can you post it if you have a minute please. I love your sense of humor and now see where it stems from. Thanks

  5. There needs to be an agreement with the regular officials ASAP.
Back to weather the only bump in the road is on Wednesday but other than that a nice boring weather pattern shaping up.

  6. I absolutely agree with Tom and Vicki in that the Patriots need to win next Sunday or the AFC East will be pretty much gone and it also won’t be much longer before their playoff chances go down in flames as well. Before you know it, the holiday season will be here. I consider the “holiday” period from Halloween to New Year’s.

All NFL personnel and players should stop whining about the replacement refs, IMHO and just play the game CLEANLY and my bet is no flags will be dropped.

    1. Philip – it seems to me that there were far too many really, really bad calls last night that didn’t have to do with playing cleanly. It was throughout the league and not just the Pats. At this level of play the incompetency seems to me to be unacceptable.

      1. These refs making the NFL look bad. Replacement refs and regular refs. Something has to end this because its horrendous.

      2. and when they were not playing cleanely cough cough the push that guy did to wilfork. wilfork got pelentilized for unsportsman like conduct even though he did not lay a finger on that guy. this was after a 3 down conversion failed its on youtube.

        1. So did gronkowski He kicked a guy. If you watch the replay the guy he kicked was twisting his ankle. Ravens are a more than nasty team.

  7. Strange NFL rulebook: 1. Can’t review a kick that goes over the uprights, but can review one that goes between (or appears to go between). In both instances, referees are making a subjective call, so why can one be settled by a review, while the other cannot? 2. Presumption that a ball that goes over an upright is `good.’ No matter how one views yesterday’s kick it was either going slightly wide right or would have hit the upright (imagine an 25 foot extension of the upright), and probably the right side of the right upright: Why then does the rulebook grant a field goal to a kick that would at best have hit an imaginary extension of the upright? That doesn’t make any sense to me. Since when is hitting the post a goal in hockey or soccer?

Back to weather: Glorious stretch of weather. It’s why there is no better place to be on earth (I’m not exaggerating) than NE in fall. I lived in beautiful Europe for many years, but so missed fall in NE. My friend and colleague in Northern Europe could not understand why I hankered for fall. I quickly found out why the first year I was there. Fall in Holland is wet, dismal, dreary, very windy, often raw, and downright depressing. A little bit like our early spring. Their version of March and April is much better than ours. I’ve never seen a good meteorological analysis of this: Why fall in the Northeast, and generally across North America, is so much nicer than fall in most of Europe. But, the inverse holds true in Spring. TK, any thoughts on this?

    1. The simple answer is the prevailing winds, more westerly in Fall, and not the majority of time but more frequently easterly due to blocking in the Spring. This would explain the character of those seasons in those locations.

      1. Thanks, TK. I think that does explain it well. We don’t tend to get cut-off low’s during the fall, but we do during the spring. Obviously, that’s a recipe for many days with an easterly wind in March, April, and even May. The prevailing wind in Northern Europe is westerly (about 75% of the time). Does not vary much from season to season, so that doesn’t account for the more tranquil spring season. I’ll look into that.

  8. According to Brett Anderson’s morning blog sea surface temps are at record highs off our northeast coast from the Gulf of Maine to Cape Hatteras NC. The average temps are at 51 F above the 30-year normal of 48 F.

Henry Margusity believes that the upcoming winter pattern is now set up near the Great Lakes and that big snows are expected for us and the Midwest.

Personally, I can’t even go with near normal snowfall right now. I am going to need a good chunk of October to be comfortable with a specific number but I am still leaning towards below, if not well below normal. I do at least have double digit amounts in mind, however.

    1. I think by the third week of ocrober, you will be hearing more from the mets on the upcoming winter. I feel very confident you will be hearing more lean with what henry is saying. But henry does nothing for me, but he is on to something. Take care.

  9. Oh my …….. I just got a bird’s eye view into why people believe mets do not do a good job. I had a service person here who said “it’s a beautiful day —- I thought it was supposed to be cold.” My comment was that it sure is beautiful and that while I hadn’t check the temp recently I had understood it was supposed to be a high in the mid 60s.

He huffed and said “I wish I could be paid as much money as they are to be wrong all of the time.”

Of course the temp here is 66……………..as promised 🙁

  10. I didn’t realize this earlier, but I heard on WEEI radio that these replacement refs are from Division 2 and 3 colleges which the games are played much slower. I had assumed that these were at least big time Div. 1 college refs. It is no wonder…now I get it. Still, bad behavior can’t be tolerated from coaches and players either. Both sides need to cut each other some slack during any disputes.

If the real refs don’t return then the Super Bowl should be “interesting” to say the least. 😉

  11. These officials are missing so many things and then there are plays I am trying to figure out why a penalty was or was not called. We are not going to stop talking about this topic until the regular officials get back on the field.

  12. Well let’s try. I suspect another chilly night Down here on the southshore. After a chilly start tomorrow, the tempature should hit 70. I believe this may be the warmest of the week. Maybe rain for weekend.

    1. John, I didn’t get a chance to post yesterday. I just want to say that I am glad the parade yesterday was a success. You had great weather for it, too.

      1. Thanks rainshine. Perfect day. You should see my face, big time burnt. People at work were like what happened. My friend who was the Santa thinks 20,000 lined the streets. I know there’s only one Santa, I know.

  13. Temps are crashing quickly….

Taunton lost 14F in the last hour, falling from 63F to 49F. Marshfield is down to 54F. Both locations are reporting calm winds.

  14. As an objective viewer of the Pats game, the field goal was good but terrible calls accross the league including the pats game.

Very chilly morning and with a young baby at home the heat got turned on today 🙂

    1. I agree Hadi. And my husband is jealous. I still have two windows open I our room. He wants to know if he can borrow the baby. I’ll be curious to know if my daughter turned their heat on for her 6 month old

  15. Yea gas heat:) forced hot water. We changed 3 years old ago to gas from oil and what a savings it’s been. With the young kids they have no way to regulate body temperature so the heat goes.

  16. Updating the blog now…

    -Warm Tuesday!
    -Showers Wednesday
    -Dry and cooler Thursday
    -Warmer than model forecast Friday
-Optimistic the weekend is slightly unsettled but not washed out
