Unsettled Stretch

9:34PM

A wave of low pressure will deliver rain to the region Friday. Upper level low pressure will sit and spin just to the west of New England this weekend before moving northeastward into southeastern Canada early next week. Unsettled weather will hang on through the weekend and into Monday as a result (though it will not rain all that much during the weekend). Lower confidence on the forecast for Tuesday as we watch a wave of low pressure offshore – may be close enough to bring at least clouds and possibly rain back into some areas. It still looks like warmer weather by the middle of next week, but always stay tuned in this wildcard zone known as New England.

  1. Trees may be a little early but I don’t think Boston sees a frost until after Halloween, mid Oct looks like mid 70’s 🙂

    1. I don’t tend to forecast high temps 2-3 weeks in advance, but I’m sure we’ll see a few very mild days in October, as usual. 🙂

    1. I thought 2 was far too early for rain. At 2AM I was outside and still seeing stars through the clouds at times.

  2. TK, I know you do not like to look to far out into the future but could you take a guess for the conditions on October 6th and 20th. On the 6th I am taking my family apple picking in Harvard and then taking Route 2 west to the Yankee Candle Factory in Deerfield. We make a little pit stop at a bridge that is very high. The past two years we have experienced wet weather while apple picking. October 20th is Pumpkin Fest up in Keene, NH 🙂

    1. I go to that bridge as well!!!!!!!! Its awsome. verry nice stream with the fall foilage. head out there a few times a year.

  3. raining here in Billerica with fog. and its only 48 degrees. I do not think the temperature does not go above 55 degrees today. To better topics anyone seeing 80s next weekend 😉 I know its far out but its already getting my hopes up for one last dip in the pool

  4. Down in Westport cleaning up Horseneck Beach for a team building event for work. Shocked at the things people leave on the beach. Not a drop of rain here yet, even some peeks of sun. Hope that continues!

    1. Did you have your tournament? For some reason I thought it was today. Nice that you are taking the time to clean up the beach and I hope the weather holds out for you

    1. good area of rain heading northeast in NY – just into CT – not sure how far east it will be by time it reaches here. Drizzle now here with .14

  5. Was is it this year with these intense showers/storms down in far southern CT/Long Island area ? It has been the hotspot for flash flood warnings/tornado warnings, etc.

    1. Rough coastlines in close proximity (Long Island & southern CT) make for localized convergence zones and low level wind sheer at times. That is why we see intense downpours and sometimes tornadic storms down there.

  6. Pretty substantial area of below normal temperatures forecast for the Midwest/Great Lakes in the 8-14 day period by CPC. One of the larger below normal areas I have seen forecast in quite some time. You don’t usually see much blue on these maps anymore.

  7. When was the last time we had a pretty much all day rain. Is kind of nice listening to the sound. We are up to .45 with more moderate rain.

  8. 2 friends in town 1 from Atlanta and the other from Chicago and its so frustrating that when we drive in to town everyone always says “looks like things never change” the empty eye soar that the delipated jolly Charleys on rt 1 has been vacant for 30 yrs yet proposal after proposal comes in only to be turned away by the town, ya wonder why deval said no money to this area, it’s takes this town years to build a Cumberland farms plus ya can’t build anything bigger or taller than a target, just saying deval was smart not to invest here and spend the money closer to Boston 🙂

      1. I figure my kids deserve to be someplace ripe with history. That’s why we are here among other reasons. My sister in law is currently living in Atlanta. She has been a flight attendant nationally and internationally since 1969 and lived in and out of the US. She absolutely loves Boston. My husband as you know lived in sweden, south africa, paris, rome among others and learned that each is remarkably special for what it has and all are unique as they should be. With all the relatives we have nationwide there has never been one visit who does not love Boston. We all have different perspectives and I really do hope you find a place that is special for you.

          1. Yeah they didn’t shut it down bc it went out of business either, people were sick of traffic and instead of widening or making traffic improvements it was just easier to shut them down, that’s what they do here, I swear when I lived in Texas they would have all got together and worked out something to improve traffic conditions, nope just shut it down, 🙂

          2. I was thinking if Boston had the terrist attack on the Hancock instead of the people erecting a freedom tower that glistens in the sky, Boston would have just built a small 5 story memorial to replace the Hancock god for bid this ever happened but I’m just saying what’s up with us 🙂

    1. Ah Jolly Charley’s, havent heard that name in a looong time. My parents used to tell me about the days when they used to go there. It is an eyesore and I agree, its a shame they havent turned it into something or at the least torn it down and cleaned up the area. Its only been 5 years since ive lived there but ur right, not much has changed

      1. Nothing ever changes, the problem is I’m a hard core new Englander if there is such a thing and I love it here, but it’s ashame and sad that we would rather leave an eye soar bc the older crowd always fights anything it doesn’t matter, people fight there own people to leave hence look at Cambridge downsizing?? Huh?? History fine but let’s move forward not stuck in neutral or in some cases backwards in some small towns, hope all is well 🙂

      2. It doesn’t bother people that there’s an eye soar on rt 1 of up to 50 or 60 back end 18 wheelers always just sitting there but the whole town will come out for a reconstruction permit for dunkin donuts, it’s crazy!

          1. And if I go to another restaurant that has a sign saying on vac be back in mid oct I’m gonna go crazy, you don’t see that anywhere but here and again frustrating, prolly won’t go back there , have a good day everyone, sorry for the rant, I just get so frustrated with the old ways

            1. I love the family owned restaurants. We find they have the best food and even better they know you by name when you walk in the door. An easy trade off if they need to close for a bit of time off. We sure do have different perspectives and Charlie that’s what makes the world go round.

      1. Hey Charlie, there are other parts of this town to love. I really like it here. It’s one of the few towns that you can be in a nice residential area and then have all the shopping you want in minutes without the two getting in each others way. There is also a lot of history here too!

        1. C’mon history? Jewelry? Yes at 1 time it was a thriving community, now it’s a bedroom community where you go out past 900-930 and there telling me hurry up and order bc the kitchen closes at 10pm, I’m sorry been here forever but I want change 🙂

          1. Understandable. You are entitled to your own opinion! I don’t go out late, so I do t run into that problem. :).

  9. Morning Tk. What’s the deal with the rain. It has been raining in pembroke since I got home from work last night at 5pm. We had thunder and lighting also last night. Is it still moving out this morning. Thanks.

    1. I think it was another wave of low pressure that threw its rain shield into southeast Mass (Boston to Providence…points south and east). In a way, with yesterday’s heavier rain more inland, I think this morning’s rain helped to equalize rain totals across most of the region. Mist continues in Marshfield.

    2. It went pretty much as foreseen. As I stated above, there are always a few areas that see more or less.

  10. I thought it was supposed to rain this morning and then leave but hadn’t heard an updated forecast. Little rain here now. We’ve had just under an inch so far. No apple picking this morning – hopefully next week.

  11. Okinawa hit yet again this tropical season by a formidable typhoon. I dont know a lot about that region’s typhoon averages (I’m guessing its a much more active region than the Alantic, Gulf and Caribbean), but this year seems to have produced many strong typhoon’s. I wonder if its been above average as well, and I wonder if there’s anything relationship to that region’s tropical activity and following cold season weather patterns. I did see on Accuweather something about a typhoon tracking as Jelawat is supposed to usually results in a trof in the central/eastern US with cooler air within 10 days or so.

    1. They showed the different water temps between the Atlantic and the western Pacific on the weather channel the other day. There is a huge amount of warm water there, compared to here.

  12. Good afternoon all!

Going to be some tweaks again on the next update later. I am on the way to Logan Airport to pick up a friend, so the update will be later.

Synopsis though… Still wet at times this weekend. Monday looks better, and mild! Tuesday/Wednesday unsettled. Improving & warming again late week. Cool shot next weekend depending on timing of front, etc.

  13. With a dry afternoon my son and I were just able to put his Halloween air blowns out. In addition to that the farmers porch is decorated as well as the inside. Now I havto look at it till Nov first.

        1. We have the gas fireplace on. We need to cover the wood. It’s wet. So wont have a real fire for a bit.

I can’t believe it’s dark at 6:30. I know the cloud cover makes it darker but not that much

        1. I wish Framingham were north shore but we are metrowest. It was a hugely busy work week and with rain I haven’t been out. I’ll try to remember to check tomorrow

    1. Well…….to answer that I’ll actually talk about the EURO and very slowly, it keeps holding back the cool air into the Great Lakes and Plains states with each day that goes by. I think today’s CPC 6 to 10 day outlook reflects that by keeping the cooler than normal temps west of New England.

So, I just hope as we get closer to the long weekend, it doesnt end up being unsettled with cool air in the great lakes, warm air just east of New
England under a strong western Atlantic ridge and us in the battle zone, right in the middle. Not great camping weather.

        1. You have time. Above you say. We must be reviewing the same information. Let’s just say it will be one wild ride.

    1. Hadi when my kids were little and when I was young we planned out Halloween costumes around wearing heavy winter jackets under them. We haven’t had to do that is a long time. Is normal now above what it was?

        1. The little ones can’t control their body temp do we have to do it for them. I think this Halloween jackets will be out.

If you look at the GFS it has some snow in our area by Oct 7-8th. Not happening, it’s overdone in terms of temps. It will moderate as Tom eluded to above.

            1. Even with snow on the ground and no power Halloween was not cold. I sat outside in the dark in a sweatshirt. The next few days were quite warm. I don’t typically equate snow with cold early or late

  14. Amazing how much more the trees have changed in this area and even east of here into Weston and newton border since last weekend

      1. Say what. We have very few leaves down. And it isn’t close to over. I’d say maybe 1/3 there. Maybe not even

        1. You totally misread that. You were talking about the change in your area And others. And I was saying its all over, meaning the change. Yes my front lawn is covered with with leaves. I am also seeing more and more leaves falling at work.

          1. I’m not sure how I read. I took it to mean you are saying we have peaked. Boston was green when we were there today. Here it isn’t close to being over. Just beginning – first third Not sure what you mean

            1. I tried to read again. You mean it’s all over the place and not all over? As I said nearly nothing in Boston but big change this week here. But fee leaves in the yard yet. We had a lot of totally green leaves last week tho

  15. Those cool nights we had earlier in the week really helped with those colors coming out. I just hope we don’t get a big wind and rain storm before peak color happens.

    1. Agreed JJ. We picked our son up in Brighton today and he too was amazed at difference even a little outside of Boston. We may have a real fall foliage season for the first time in a bit.

      You watching Ryder cup?

      1. I am watching the Ryder Cup. U.S. in great shape up 10-6 going into the final day. Ian Poulter very impressive
with 5 straight birdies to finish. Interesting the U.S. team in 99 at Brookline came back from a 10-6 deficit on the
final day to win the Ryder Cup. With that said I think it is going to be very tough for the European team to win
this with the talent on the U.S. team.

        1. I was watching that a bit this morning. That is golf I will watch. I forget exactly who it was, maybe Bubba Watson…encouraging the crowd to cheer while he hit his drive.

        2. Mac completely agrees. We had a family party today so he just finished watching. Tomorrow is pats game at 1 so he’ll watch golf later too.

Tom I agree. I love the fun in the Ryder cup game.

      1. That’s what I had always thought. Thanks TK. I was trying to remember what it had to do with our horses and it is also the main factor for their winter coat.

    1. One renegade 18z run. Snow if you take only the zero line into account. Completely gone from the 00z run, as expected. 🙂

It was fun to look at though. 🙂

      1. The MA State Climatologist always said that his stats showed that over 70% of the time we had measurable snow in eastern MA in October, the winter’s snowfall was below normal.

That stat actually shows a correlation. Whether it’s completely coincidence or not, I’m not entirely sure.

  16. Nadine !!! As strong as ever……

Speaking of the tropics, thinking southeast Mass, at least, has a shot at 65F to 70F dewpoints when this next system tracks west of the region in the midweek timeframe.
