The Week Ahead

7:34PM

The weekend was a showcase of how changeable the weather can be in New England, no matter the season. We went from the chilly winds of Friday night to the frosty coldย  Saturday morning to the bright & crisp Saturday afternoon to the showers/rain of Sunday morning to the emerging mild sun and increasing humidity of late in the day Sunday.

Now looking into the week upcoming, there will be some changes again to occur, especially early and late in the week. Obviously the more certain part of the forecast is the early to mid part of the week. A cold front will slide across the region late Monday, preceded by variably cloudy skies, very mild air, a gusty wind, and an increasing chance of showers especially late in the day and at night.

Tuesday through Thursday will be dominated by high pressure with fair weather.

The late week and weekend forecast is tricky, with conflicting guidance. I’m going to go with a more progressive solution which will bring unsettled weather in on Friday but move it along and out of the region Saturday, setting up a fairly decent weekend. This part of the forecast is low confidence and subject to change as the week goes along.

Forecast for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH…

TONIGHT: Variably cloudy. Patchy fog. Lows 53-58. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Variably cloudy. Scattered showers in the afternoon, greatest chance late day. Highs 63-68 south-facing coasts, 68-73 elsewhere. Wind SW 10-20 MPH, gusts to 25 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Scattered to numerous showers. Lows 50-55. Wind SW 1o-15 MPH shifting to W.

TUESDAY: Partly cloudy. Highs 60-65. Wind W 10-20 MPH and gusty.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 44. High 64.

THURSDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 49. High 68.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy. Showers likely. Low 51. High 63.

SATURDAY: Partly sunny. Low 48. High 60.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 42. High 60.

  1. Thanks TK for the update and keep us posted throughout the week on the Friday/Saturday timeframe.

BB cost us 3 points at the end of the half. With 6 seconds left (and especially on the road) the FG should have been kicked instead of going for the TD. The AFC East is up for grabs yet again. ๐Ÿ™

    1. I posted on WBZ’s blog to Barry about being conflicted about late week and that I was going to go with the progressive solution for now. He’s going with the slower one. We’ll see how it pans out.

        1. TK…fwiw NWS has blended both models for now and have both Friday and Saturday wet. Is that solution on the table as well in your opinion?

          1. Yes. It is possible that at least part of Friday AND Saturday end up unsettled if the timing is somewhere in between what the Euro & GFS show. Hence my label of low confidence on that part of the outlook. ๐Ÿ™‚

        2. Occasionally. One of them made a comment on his post from yesterday. Basically the same post they make every time the forecast doesn’t work out perfectly. Whatever. They keep knocking on this blog but they’ll never get in. ๐Ÿ™‚

          1. It amazes me how you and your geek team have kept them out since you started this blog. Don’t ever post how you do it! That should always remain with you. ๐Ÿ™‚

            1. Not only do they not get in, I know their real names and where one of them works. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Since one of them posts from work, if they got in here it would be over in one phone call.

        3. i actually see almost no one over there… I think it would be a safe bet that we could go back over there and talk ๐Ÿ˜‰

            1. It’s amazing really. You’d think there would be more to life than trying to discredit others. If only the effort to get on here where the objective would be to discredit Woods Hill Weather were put to something positive.

              1. I am sure they will be out in full force once the winter arrives. I love that you are a human firewall TK and they can’t get past you!!!

  2. Agree with you both. But don’t forget the poor play of Tom Brady. He did things today that he usually never does. This is a real bad loss for this team. They should not be 3-3. Whatever. Warm night out there.

      1. At worst the game should have been tied at 26-26 at the end of regulation. If they had lost in OT I could have lived with that.

Don’t be surprised if the Patriots don’t even make the playoffs. Teams in the league no longer see them on their schedule as an automatic loss plus BB takes too many chances and at times doesn’t trust his players in certain situations.

        1. If they remain healthy, and get some things figured out, I suspect they will be in playoffs. Still have ten more games to play.

              1. The secondary is the worst it’s been in a long time. Brady looked beat at the end of yesterday’s game and it was evident with the 2 intentional grounding calls and the couple of times he bounced the ball in to his receivers.

    1. Assuming the warm front has long since passed to our north, am somewhat (pleasantly) surprised that dps are still in the low 50’s. However, they are edging close to 60 on the Cape.

  3. The discussion of Indian summer made me think of the term blackberry winter. I think it can be called dogwood winter too. I think it’s May-ish in the south when there is cold weather after the blackberrys bloom.

Again see how we’ll I go into denial by focusing on the trivial ๐Ÿ™

  4. this team reminds me of the 2001 team with a balance offense and also an ok run and pass rush. but that was not evident today. the defensed bended. Lets see if they can rebound against the jets next week. I do believe its a a good team just different than last year. also our defense is not that bad. 12 over all in the nfl. unlike last year and 11 forced fumbles 2 most

  5. woke up this morning and listened to the nfl channal and that seahawk defense guy trash talked brady and the patriots…How manytimes have they gotten into the playoffs compared to the patriots :O… this is just fuel for the pats to do better

    1. As AceMaster and I thought but didn’t say out loud……………they are punks ๐Ÿ˜‰ Their play showed it.

      1. i do not like that hit they did on welker and that cheap shot to gronk that i guess i was the only one that saw it. it was in the corner of the screen right after a play in the third Quarter. he went for the legs of gronk. Also we lost just by 1 point. all the games they have lost were really close. There were also some missed flags on both sides. That hit to welker was not a clean hit… i replayed that tape and one of the welker hits i was surprised he did not get seriously injured. A flag should have been thrown.

        1. Matt I agree with both comments. And even worse, on the hit to gronks back the guy who hit him then pushed off his back when he went to stand up. AND a couple of plays after Welker returned one of the seahawks (maybe 32 or 52) walked by Welker when he was on the ground after a tack and slapped him on the helmet knowing he could well have a concussion or at the very least some form of head injury. We watched that over a few times.

  6. A real nail-biter w/the Patriots – leading to a big disappointment. We had some friends over so while the guys were glued to the tv, us women were chatting about other stuff and playing with our cat. I kept running in and checking and at the end we all were watching. Kind of glad I didn’t watch the whole thing in entirety – would’ve felt worse. I kind of agree with JJ. I think they will make the playoffs but maybe not to the Super Bowl, unless they really get their act together. I guess you never know.

Summer has returned – it’s nice, I suppose, but looking forward to the cold weather to really settle in. One thing is that the sky and the light are very pretty – right now kind of a pinkish glow to everything and the sun has been up awhile. I hope we get some non-severe thunderstorms later on! Just to hold on to summer a bit longer, I guess! ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. I know I’m saying 2 different things – I want the cold weather to come and yet I want to hold onto summer a bit longer. Well, that’s because I love the weather, no matter what the season! ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. I love starting the day with a laugh. I was thinking the same thing this morning – especially about thunderstorms ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Did anyone watch Felix Baumgartnerโ€™s jump yesterday? I know it was not specifically weather related except for his fall through our atmosphere. We were at a small restaurant in Ashland with our daughter and her family. There were a couple of TVs broadcasting the jump. It was both thrilling and chilling to watch. Everyone in the restaurant was on his feet by the time it got close to jump time.

    1. I watched it Vicki and I was right on the edge of my seat just like Felix when he was just about to jump. I don’t know how his family could sit and watch it not knowing if the result would be a good one or bad one. CRAZY!!!

      1. I don’t either, Sue. The more I read the more I understand the value of his jump in how the body deals with exposure to the upper atmosphere. Also, it’s impressive that he was having a lot of trouble with claustrophobic type reactions to the suit he wore and how he worked through it. I also didn’t know the medical director’s wife was one of those who died when Columbia broke up on re-entry.

    1. Seems like a weekly question recently with the iffy weekend forecasts. I’m still cautiously optimistic.

  8. It was 62 in Boston during the early news this morning, I’m wondering what the tempature is now, it is really warming up here.

  9. It is amazing how a person’s body/mind deals with temperatures during different seasons. It’s 72 and somewhat sticky and in summer I’d be wearing shorts and a Tshirt. But it is fall and I have on slacks and a light long sleeved shirt and am comfortable. My only concession is that I’m not wearing socks – I hate socks ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. I find it somewhat shocking that TK and a few geeks can easily keep trolls away from here and yet a major CBS affiliate with hundreds of employees is unable (or unwilling?) to from their site. Anyway, it doesn’t matter since I can no longer post comments over at WBZ even if I wanted to because they no longer support Windows 7. I can still read others comments that are posted, however.

IMHO…WBZ should really get rid of the comments section entirely and just have the mets discussions which I do read on ooccasion, especially Barry’s. Any comments or questions should be sent to the mets e-mail accounts like the other stations do.

    1. Philip – I totally agree. I do a lot of blogging on BZ. I particularly enjoy political discussions and always end up learning from them. But there are always some that can hide behind their computers and just launch insults. What they do not seem to understand is, in their attempt to make someone else look bad, they are really only making themselves look foolish. As far as BZs weather blog, I find it really upsetting that BZ continues to ask the mets to post comments and then just accept the insults. What kind of a person gets a kick out of making another look bad – especially when the mets go to so much trouble to create the blog.

Ohhhhhhhh I’m back on my soapbox ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

          1. A few weeks ago I posted about keeping this blog politics free….I should probably amend that statement a little and say while I still don’t think it’s a good idea I do think that all of us out here are a different breed than some of the bozos that post their lunatic stuff (both sides of the political spectrum) on the BZ forums. It’s even worse on the CNN forums. So if I came across as being a bit pompous on that post I do apologize.

BTW it’s been very windy down here in the Hngham Norwell area today…seems to be dying down a bit now

            1. I definitely politics don’t belong here. You are right there are a lot of people on the BZ forums that are not nice but there are also some that are really interesting and respectful.

It’s been very windy here today too……We have tons of green leaves on the ground now. But even more on the trees. I’m thinking the trees may hold onto the leaves late again although I didn’t think so a few weeks ago.

  11. It’s funny usually I am annoyed by the weather when it is sunny and breezy because it’s like “sweatshirt on off on off on off” but today is really nice. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Emily I was thinking of you yesterday when I started wearing my flannel PJs to watch the game and then had to switch back to cotton. And then later back to flannel. “PJs on off on off on off” ๐Ÿ˜‰

  12. At what point do the Patriots have to begin seriously looking for a successor to Brady? He is in his late thirties…….

    1. Didn’t he set record second only to Brees for most passing yards in a season last year? I think he’s just 35 too. I will check but don’t think he’s close to needing to retire yet.

    2. M.L. – You just exposed the pink elephant that everyone knows is in the room. I think Brady has great years ahead but those years are numbered. They have no one in their system who is even close to being ready to take over the reigns. I would note however, they had no one ready to succeed Bledsoe, and out popped Brady who was a nobody. The rest was history.

          1. There is that but he led one of the most prolific passing offenses in college when he was there. SIL said they released foyer (sp) because mallett is growing up.

I know nothing but like weather am learning ;).

            1. Ur right Vicki, he had a great college career. Im sure Bill knew what he was doing when he drafted him and let a sure handed “safe” backup QB in Hoyer walk.

Weather is waaay more complicated than football. Ur doing a great job learning ๐Ÿ˜‰

  13. I might have a bit of egg on my face for my displeasure of the foliage so far. Just came home from the store and noticed some bright yellows and oranges popping out of nowhere. Looks mystical with the sun low on the horizon and the dark clouds forming to our west.

  14. Wow, 12z EURO 850 mb temps are WARM for next Tuesday/Wednesday (week from tomorrow) ……. With 14C to 16C temps. If this was midsummer, thatwouldbe a very warm to hot day. With the October sun angle and less mixing, could still be talking 75F to 80F. Now to see if this signal continues the next few days.

  15. Hurricane Paul rapidly intensifies to a Cat 3 Hurricane in the eastern Pacific, southwest of the Baha of California. Interesting to watch its ability to maintain its strength as it approaches the Baha.

  16. Sure looks like some heavy showers heading northeast from Providence towards Boston.

In a special statement from the NHC, Rafael has become a hurricane. Pressure down to 974 mb.
