The Week Ahead

7:11PM

A freezing start to a fantastic finish? That may be how the next 7 days play out, with some changes as we go from beginning to end. These changes will be brought about by these features:

– Frost/freeze early Monday with high pressure, centered to the north, extending down across the region. Frost and freeze advisories are posted for the South Coast of MA and RI for overnight and early Monday.

– Low pressure drifting northward and passing just east of southern New England late Tuesday with raw & cloudy weather and perhaps a little light precipitation (which may even include snowflakes if we should get a period of precipitation with any intensity).

– A cold front approaching Wednesday pushing milder air in ahead of it.

– The cold front having trouble clearing the coast and a possible low pressure wave which may cause some unsettled weather as it starts to cool down again.

– High pressure moving in but upper level low pressure nearby so a little unstable Friday, meaning at least some clouds and not even ruling out isolated showers.

– A weekend that should see mostly fair weather as weak high pressure builds in but should be just strong enough to hold low pressure off. This is subject to change as there have been some indications that low pressure would arrive sooner and Sunday would end up not-so-nice.

But wait there’s more!!!

Tonight! Under a clear sky look for Lyrid meteors, up to 10 per hour away from city lights, especially from midnight to about an hour before sunrise. Bundle up if you go out there. It’s gonna be quite chilly for April!

Updated forecast for southeastern New England (southern NH, eastern MA, and RI)…

TONIGHT: Clear. Lows from upper 20s inland valleys to middle 30s cities and coast. Wind light variable.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 50-55. Wind E 5-15 MPH.

50.1 degrees watching sunset, I’ll let ya know if all my flowers and plants die from the freeze warning, put your bets in, I say no
    Reply Thanks tk

    1. About $400-500 worth of flowers and plants all around the house, I think it gets down to 33-34 degrees here

      1. Is it possible to verify those warnings, with temps getting to 31F or 32F, but not killing the flowers ?? Does it need to get more towards 27F or 28F to really cause problems….

With that said, clear skies, light winds and low dewpoints, I wonder how cold it could get in low lying locations in SE Mass.

        1. I would agree there have been times in past years it would even get down to 29 or 30 degrees but nothing happens, I think the warm ground or mulch keeps everything close to ground a little warmer

          1. You are probably right about the mulch, or ground that gathered heat from the sun. With the shorter nights, there isn’t as much time for damage to take place even if it gets below freezing. And it really needs to be under 28 to really kill things off anyway.

    2. Are you on south coast? Your temp and mine are about the same. I’ve been on deck with fire most of afternoon and evening. Family locked me out cause I smelled like smoke. 🙂

  2. dewpoint 13 here – ouch. My plants are near the house and protected on an inside corner – should be ok.

  3. The CPC now has above normal temps from coast-to-coast with the exception of the Upper Midwest (Minnesota especially) with still below normal temps through early May.

Hopefully Mother’s Day (May 12th) will feature sunny & warm spring conditions for all. 🙂

  4. The people of Minnesota really would love to be in that above normal temperature category. More accumulating snow up there with 1-3 inches for Minneapolis. Ken Barlow who used to work at BZ now is a meteorologist in Minneapolis is missing out on spring so far which is his favorite season.

  5. I know this is probably more for the gardening section, but is spring the best time to aerate a lawn? My future father-in-law tonight was telling me fall, but everything ive been reading says spring.

    1. yes spring and fall are good times to do it. Just do not do it in the summer and you will be good to go

    2. My dad always had a magnificent lawn. He mowed it with a push mower and always wore golf shoes. Not sure if it made a difference but it sure didn’t hurt.

  6. Cold this morning ….. however, I did notice that when I looked out the window around 5:45am, it was very bright, which was nice. Car windows were coated in frost / frozen dew.

    1. Thanks OS – I read some quickly and bookmarked the article to read more later. I didn’t realize they used the aircraft for winter storms as well. Very interesting.

  7. Acemaster the best time to aerate and oversees your lawn is fall, I do not recommend doing a spring seeding as when you’ve applied your fertilizer and crabgrass pre emergent it will not let the new seed germinate for 6-8 weeks, YOU WILL GET BETTER RESULTS IN FALL, have a good day ace master

    1. Thanks charlie. We just closed on a house and I wanted to get the lawn going this year. Its in terrible shape as the old owner didnt touch it for years. I guess ill have to wait till next year.

  8. The beauty of living in St. Paul, Minnesota:

    http://www.weather.com/weather/today/Saint+Paul+MN+USMN0664:1:US

My daughter just emailed me to let me know that a WSW has been posted, with at least 6 inches on the way. Probably more. They need the precipitation, but for spring lovers it’s got to be a nightmare. I did warn Lisa about the long, long, long winters. She loves Minnesotans (as I do), and really likes Macalester. So, all is good, despite the cold and snow. I told her it should all be over by July 4th. …

        1. The average snowfall for St. Paul is 50″ not all that much more than Boston’s 44″ which quite surprised me when I looked it up. Hopefully the Red River will experience slow snow melt.

        2. I don’t believe any one period can either prove or disprove global warming. I believe that there is a natural cycle and our constant abuse of our earth is hurrying it along.

  9. Hello all….I haven’t been online much as we just adopted a kitten and things have been busy here. My boys are just a little excited. Hope everyone is enjoying the bright sun today!

      1. Kevin has named her Mittens. I am starting to fear he may be allergic to her though. I sure hope not!

        1. Oh boy. We got a kitty years ago. Sweetest darn cat you could ever have and most of us were allergic. Maybe it’ll wear off. Ill keep my fingers crossed

    1. I was wondering about that this morning. Thanks. There is a lot of flooding but I’ve been so far removed from the news I don’t know where. I thought some was in the worst drought areas but really have no clue.

  10. Chilly,Raw,and damp out today…Looking forward to tomorrow with highs near 70! Have a good day everyone!

  11. Well today is the cold one of the week. BB has the high today at 44 and o.1 to o.5″ of rain for B-town. More rain as you go out to the Cape with the eastern end of the Cape getting 1-2.” Tough conditions at Fenway tonight.

    1. Oh my goodness….so exciting. Can’t wait to hear about the new arrival! Praying for a quick and safe delivery!

  12. I hope the day 6-10 period on the 0z EURO is a trend that will hold. I dont think there’s an 850mb temp below 0C to be found on it. Even the northern plains, well into central Canada, perhaps up to 60N Latitude show significant moderation. That certainly would lift the snowcover well up into central Canada and make the airmasses coming out of Canada even more milder. Only cold source left would be the ocean and ice filled Hudson Bay.

  13. Thanks, TK.

Sorry I haven’t been on much lately – family issues and dr. appts. still continue. Plus the events of the last 2 wks. Although I don’t know anyone personally affected by what happened, it affected me, as w/everyone else greatly. I was born in Boston and lived in Boston at times and graduated college in Boston. Boston is special to me and it hurt. Again, my thoughts and prayers are for those who lost loved ones and who are healing from the effects. No one can bring Boston down – I watched what I could on TV, mostly on WBZ as events unfolded – I am glad that everything is better. But unfortunately, we always have to keep on guard in this society. I pray that there will come a day when we don’t have to. But – human nature is human nature.

Hope I have this right –

Tom, North and Hadi – glad you enjoyed your vacation.

Hadi – I am jealous! Enjoy your vacation and the sunshine and warmth!

John – enjoy your vacation! It sounds like a lot of fun for the whole family!

Vicki – excited about your daughter!

Hope I didn’t leave anyone out – if I did, sorry.

Oh – glad to see you back, Old Salty. Keep posting for the spring/summer season.

Now out the door for more errands and things to do. A grey day today but looks like more springlike weather coming up.

And TWC finally got to Zeus! I knew they would, even if they had to make it snow! 🙂

  14. I hope that the Red Sox do not give up on tonight’s game weatherwise. Yes, it will be raw and damp, but I think the rain wont be too heavy to play in.

Of all places in the US, why do the Red Sox have so many home games in April and May ?? Wouldnt trips to Texas and the LA Angels, Kansas City, etc …..where its somewhat milder now, be a great time to play in those cities and not in July, August when its 95F to 105F. Send the MLB schedule to Woodshill Weather, we’ll make better choices. 🙂

    1. Idk ill tell ya the truth I can’t wait for July when Patriots mini camp starts and even more the nfl draft in 5 days, for some reason I haven’t watched a full redsox game in over 2 yrs, Go Patriots!! 🙂

      1. I don’t think I’ve ever watched an entire red sox game in my life. I love the sox and baseball dont get me wrong, but i just cant sit and pay full attention for 3.5 – 4 hours. I usually get up and walk around or do so stuff online. Its one of those things i have on in the background.

    1. Looks beautiful Charlie. Looks like that forecast a few days back of persistent rain and cold for weeks has gone out the window.

  15. Harvey bought the wrong model.
Never expected much rain in Boston. Not gonna rain much there.

  16. Sox down 6-0 in the rain. It looks miserable if you’re in the stands.
    B’s down 1-0 off a horrendous effort on D.

  17. Drizzle of different intinsity through out today and it was cool . did not get above 38 degrees.
