Quick Change Day

2:23AM

After a chilly and damp Tuesday with temperatures barely over 40 in much of southern New England, drizzle and light fog, and some heavier rain over Cape Cod, the weather will pull a quick change today, starting much the way Tuesday ended, but turning much nicer! Low pressure will move away, taking its damp chill with it. Eventually the sky will clear and air will warm (though parts of the coast may struggle to warm up too much) as drier air moves in.

A cold front will cross the region from west to east overnight and early Thursday with a chance of showers. High pressure builds in Thursday, centered first to the south then eventually expanding into the weekend, but it will be fighting a little bit of an upper level low pressure trough around Friday/Saturday which may mean some diurnal cloudiness and even a slight shower threat (mainly Friday). Overall, however, the pattern will be much nicer for the second half of this week.

Forecast for southeastern New England…

Starting out in the 40s but warming rapidly to mid or late afternoon highs of near 60 immediate coast to near 70 in some inland locations. Wind NE to N 10-15 MPH eventually shifting more to the W.

TONIGHT: Clouds return west to east with areas of showers and possibly a thunderstorm in the overnight hours. Lows around 50. Wind S 10-20 MPH.

  2. Thank you TK. My best to your friend and family and to you today as I know it will be a very difficult day for you all.

  3. Again again and again, why do the commuter rail trains break down on a regular basis? I mean once a month either someone jumps on the train tracks to commit suicide or simply the train just breaks down, this is never gonna be fixed, is it? We have tooken trains everyday for months at a time and never a report of a problem, here it’s almost an everyday occurrence, it’s bad real bad, Boston is gets a good vibe on an expansive subway and commuter rail but its so outdated the tracks in some areas are warped and I thought the train was gonna actually flip over, what a turnoff!!

    1. We’ve tooled trains everyday in other cities and never ever a prob, I never thought Boston had such problems with the commuter rail and subways

  4. 1. It appears sunny, seasonable and dry weather expected for the long term through the beginning of May with above normal temps at times. 🙂

    2. Congratulations Vicki! 🙂

    3. TK…I believe it is safe now to put away the Woods Hill winter scene above…and your snow shovel. 😉

        1. At one point for May 2, the GFS had it cold enough for mixed precip. and the Euro had 70s to 80. 🙂

          1. With a blocking ridge building next week. Look for below precip and above normal temps for the next 7-10 days +.

  5. TK – I just read the prior blog and saw the news about the MIT officer being a family friend. I am so sorry and my thoughts are with all who knew and loved him. May he rest in peace.

  6. good day to go biking :D, sadly im stuck doing work for my class tomorrow. At least i played some football and hung out with some freinds earlier on campus

  7. So is there still potential for 1 last snowstorm? I’m seeing Tk mentioned possibilities 🙂 when is it coming?

  8. Today was the service for the MIT officer. Very sad and very moving. But those kinds of services always fill you with a little bit of hope when you see everybody together to celebrate somebody’s life. It’s just very sad that it was this occasion to bring them together. It would have been so much better had they all been celebrating a promotion or some other career milestone. Promising life cut so short by something that did not have to take place.

It’s also with additional sadness I tell you all that my brother’s best friend passed away yesterday. He suffered a heart attack back in March and the doctors said his heart was in bad shape. He was on a transplant list but of course that list is very long and it was only a long shot. Unfortunately, he did not make it. He was a great guy and would do anything for anyone. I know we always say that about people but it could not be truer about him. He and my brother were best friends since 7th grade (1960s) and even though they didn’t see each other every day they talked on the phone pretty much daily to check in with each other.

So yes, it has been a bit of a rough week or 2, but it’s always important to remember there is much good out there. So many great people. We have seen it during these trying couple weeks. Unfortunately it often takes some tragic event to make it apparent. We should all try to remember it daily, and try to do something good for somebody, however small, each day. You just never know what the next day will bring. But instead of living in fear of that, it’s best to just live for today and live with hope that tomorrow will bring good things. As one of my favorite bands (Klaatu) said way back in the 1970s, “All is lost if one abandons hope.”

All of that said, it’s still a beautiful day out there and there is much to be happy about. And yes, I do believe I can finally say that we’ve seen the last of the flakes. Looking at the trusted Euro, there is no chance of any flaking around these parts into early May, and we all know how rare snowflakes are in May (even though we have measured snow in May a couple times). In fact, the pattern looks quite nice overall in the next week or so. But of course there will be days when the ocean breeze makes those not far from the coast reach for the sweaters and jackets. That is to be expected.

Enjoy the rest of today everybody. 🙂

I will update the blog again later this evening!

    1. TK – what a beautiful post. I am so sorry about your brother’s best friend. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family with their loss and also to your family. This is quite a loss when you speak to someone daily – I can’t begin to form the words what you have gone through the past several days with 2 losses. At least try to enjoy the pretty day, TK. Spring has definitely sprung.

    2. I am very sorry TK, what a rough two weeks it has been. I know your brother will miss his best friend a lot. It is not often that we have friends like that for such a long time. My thoughts are with you and your family.

    1. Thanks everybody. I’m the lucky one, really. I have not gone through these things so directly as some of my friends and family have. I’m here for them though.

    1. It was overdue.

Spring is here. Winter’s done. He may remind us of his not-so-long-ago presence with a few cool blasts into May, but he cannot grip us any longer, at least until next October at the earliest…

Spring is here. Can summer really be far behind?

        1. Boston’s average first inch of snow is November 11.

And that’s why I said October at the earliest.

And we had measurable snow around this area 3 out of the last 4 Octobers.

  9. A somewhat puzzling CPC outlook (especially given the season) of above normal temps for SNE but well below normal temps for most of the southern tier of states.

    Can you explain this TK?

    1. Ridge centered over the Northeast, non-ridge (not really a trough but lower heights relative to normal) over the Southeast. The Euro shows this nicely.
