The Week Ahead

8:15AM ORIGINAL

6:50PM EDIT FOR TIME PERIODS AND SKY CONDITION FOR TONIGHT

High pressure will remain in control through next weekend. There is no rain in sight. Fire danger will increase and pollen counts will be high, but the weather will be fantastic. Somewhat more cloudiness may be in the sky Monday and Tuesday as a storm system to the west runs into the high pressure area parked over the Northeast and falls apart. Coastal areas will be cooler during many of the days because of onshore winds of the cool ocean waters.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England…

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows from the middle to upper 30s deepest valleys to middle 40s coast. Wind light variable.

MONDAY: Partly cloudy. Highs in the 60s but cooling back to the 50s along the coast. Wind S to SE 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows in the 40s. Wind light variable.

TUESDAY: Partly sunny. Highs in the 60s but again cooling back to the 50s at the coast. Wind SE to E 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 45. High 66, cooler coast.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 46. High 67, cooler coast.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 47. High 68, cooler coast.

SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 48. High 67.

  1. Thanks

Any landscapers out there do you know what bug looks sort of like a beetle and is destroying my Lillie’s ? I bought stuff last year but it did not work this year so wondering if its a different creature. Thanks

    1. We have them too. We have one Lilly and the bugs somehow used to find it every year. Nothing I did worked. I think its called a lily beetle. I finally pulled the one lily plant but noticed yesterday its back. Strong plants. Bugs don’t bother any things else to my knowledge

  2. I got my answer and there is no way to get rid of them except to remove plants or brush them off daily which I don’t have time to do 🙂

    1. Oops I never read down. As you can see from above even pulling the plants doesn’t mean they won’t re grow.

  3. Another beautiful day, some of the clover is trying to flower already in some southern area lawns, it’s about a week early, pool temp is 59 degrees!! It’s getting balmy lol

        1. If it has snowed as late as May 18 (2002) then YES. There is always potential until at least that date.

Do I see any potential in the next 10 days? No.

            1. Right. A 0.1% chance is still a chance. 😉

About the same chance you have of winning the lottery on the daily #, but yet my brother did it 2 times in 2 days.

And about 75 times in the past year. 🙂

  4. LOL!!!! I don’t see a repeat of May 9, 1977 this year.
We are in a nice spring pattern now but the downside is we could use a good soaking. Here in CT were over 3 inches down for the year and as of the latest drought monitor a good chunk of the state is abnormally dry.

    1. JJ we noticed the Sudbury river is dropping again. It was fairly high a few weeks ago. Golf course husband plays is along river and he was surprised how low it is when he played last week

      1. Before to long will be depending on rainfall from showers and thunderstorms for a good chunk of our rainfall and with that it is hit and miss where some towns get soaked and others get drenched. Very rarely does it rain all day during the summer months.
Speaking of showers and storms Zurich Classic of New Orleans still in a weather delay. So much for moving the tee times up to avoid the inclement weather.

        1. Oops. Mac is recording it. Something happened yesterday to the recording so he missed the whole day

  5. This long-lasting dry stretch was something that was expected to start in the Spring when I was outlining the long range pattern back some weeks ago. This sets up a potential summer drought as I don’t see a return to a wet pattern for a very long time.

  6. My tulips have finally come up today and they are absolutely beautiful! 😀

It has been a very slow flowering start here along the coastline compared to the interior suburbs. As recent as just a couple weeks ago my crocuses were still at their peak.

  7. I had no luck with my crocuses this year. They came up for a day and the next day they bent over on the ground. I am hoping the rest of my plants do better. My hosta and bleeding heart started a few days ago to come out.

    1. Same with crocuses here. Dafs were great. Hostas up about 5 inches and peonies about 6-8

What a glorious day. I’d love this for summer temps

      1. Vicki I to would love these temps during summer.
Golf tournament resumed at 2:33 and it looks to be an on time finish with the final round live now thanks to that
        weather delay.

        1. Thanks for letting me know. Currently macs on the deck cleaning his clubs and trying to get the spikes out of his shoes. 🙂

        2. JJ IMHO this is the very best of outdoor weather sitting. No mosquitoes just glorious weather . You can sit out forever….

      1. boogie boards and skimboards. we are opening the pool around the 11th. two days after finals for me 😀

  8. Just heard there is a now 40 acre brush fire on Clinton at hopkinton. We kept our daughters first pony on Clinton. A lot of it is Weston nursery but the pics don’t look like nursery land.

      1. It sure does. We were going to take a ride that way after dinner but we just finished eating and enery is gone.

  9. The planet Saturn.

We will be able to see Saturn starting now and throughout May because Saturn is opposite the sun in the earth’s sky. I think astronomers call this “opposition.” Today is actually the very best day to view this planet. This is unusual because we can see it with the naked eye and the weather is cooperating. I think it’s at the end of the handle of the Big Dipper or near there and alittle lower in the sky. But you can read about it here. It could be a treat! If you have even the smallest telescope it will be better.

    1. Thanks longshot. My grandson and I will be out looking. I love the night sky, planets and stars

  10. planted my pot herp garden. i have a series of pots that i put rosemary, different kinds of basil and manny more different kinds of herbs. gardens are fuilled with tulips ,dalfs and other spring flowers. trees are starting to turn green. though in the marsh only the lower trees are starting. . went with a freind to a hiking area. and we saw. a a few hawks and a family of blue herons the babbies look so fragil

  11. Tweaked the blog to remove “TODAY” and also changed the sky condition forecast tonight from “clear” to “partly cloudy” to reflect the fact the high cloud deck from the storm to the west is already in the western sky and going to blot out the sun before it sets. These clouds will be thinning out as they run into the ridge over us though, but may filter the sun at times during the last 2 days of April.

  12. Pollen counts are still very high, hanging around 10 on a 12 pt scale. Part of the problem is the lack of rain which would reduce the count. I think we’re more than 2 inches behind for the month and not much in sight.

  13. I have a great article on Red Lilly Beetles, and if not controlled (best w/ Bayer Rose and Flower Spray) they will take over you lillies, leaving nothing left but stems. See gardening blog for more on Red Lilly Beetles.

  14. Wow, the ridge truly is eating away at these clouds, which are literally thinning out overhead. It has turned into a mostly sunny day here.

  15. Still talking snow eh? LOL. You guys crack me up.

Enjoy a taste of summer this weekend heading into next week. Unfortunately, no rain in sight as temps climb from the 60s this week to the 70s over the weekend and into the 80s by early next week. But, hey, snow certainly still remains a “potential.” LOL! 😀

    1. To everything there is a season. And to every comment there is a reason. Hadnt seen you in a bit so figured it was time……..nice of you to stop by. Hope all is well and you’ll join us for Tstorms. Potential for them also 😀

  16. Two questions. Did I miss answer to yesterday’s quiz. Also husband said jet stream lingers longer when lower. He wondered if its cause there’s more moisture.

  17. I have 7 different vegetables growing in garden, I think I’ll get more veg this yr than last yr 🙂

    1. Flowering trees correct ? Not other trees Have you ever driven around Mt Auburn cemetery at this time of year?

      http://www.mountauburn.org/

I,was interested to read about the downy mildew disease for impatiens. We always have success with our impatien garden – its all I have luck with. Last year it was a disaster. Now I know why

  18. Interesting that we have a fabulous blooming spring going on and everything is going to die early due to drought… Enjoy mowing now because come late May we’ll probably have brown lawns except in places there are no water bans and people are rich enough to have sprinkler systems to cover it all. 😉
