The Three Seasons

9:36PM

A night that feels like Fall, a return to Spring warmth with wind, and a possible shot of Summer heat are all things to talk about during the next 7 days. The last one of course is far enough way that there is uncertainty in timing and even if it takes place. But right now I will forecast this for the start of next week.

Several things will take place between now and then. The chilly air mass that came in at the end of the weekend is still with us and will cause one more night that feels more like the middle of Fall. More-than-expected cloudiness last night prevented most areas from seeing frost and freeze, and with the core of the coldest air now gone and a slight breeze continuing during tonight, there should not be any frost or freeze. A small, fast-moving low pressure area will move east southeastward across southeastern Canada Wednesday, dragging first a warm front and then a cold front across the region. Lots of clouds and eventually a shower threat will result. Once this moves by, a shot of warmer air will invade the region Thursday, but it will be a little tougher than usual to enjoy because of an accompanying strong westerly wind. As we get to Friday and the weekend, high pressure will build north of the region and introduce a more northerly wind and eventually some onshore flow. Temperatures will respond by lowering from the warm levels of Thursday. Mostly fair weather is expected, though clouds will race into the region during Sunday ahead of a warm front. If things move along quickly enough, some Summer-like air will be here by Monday and Tuesday.

      1. How’s your game? Groupon has some deals for Waverly Oaks Golf in Plymouth (I think that’s the name). I got a couple for Mac – hope it’s still in good shape.

        1. The game is coming along slow. We are 1-2 so far in the first 3 weeks. I haven’t played my best though. Groupon is awesome! I’ve never played that course but I hear its really nice.

          1. Mac and son Scott played it a few times and really like it. Ill see if I can find the link to the deal

            1. Vicki…my parents enjoy Waverly’s Nine and Dine special. They can tee off between 3 and 5 on Friday nights and play nine holes and then have a very nice dinner at their clubhouse all for $50.

              1. WOW – I’ll tell Mac – that is amazing. He could easily head there one of the Friday’s we are in Humarock. Thank you!!!!!

    1. Hmmm if’ it’s a Thursday, it may well rain. Rain seems to like golf league days πŸ™

TK looks to have ordered some very nice summer weather starting on what I believe is his bday????

  1. good that heat comes when i can actually use it πŸ˜‰ right now im stuck not able to do much do to my trip to the ER and having minor surgery πŸ™

  2. I think this morning was chillier that yesterday morning. Got down to 34 in easton.

    1. I think based on the fact that some of the people are Saudi and Pakistani then people assume motives were bad, what if it was 7 college kids from BU, doubt people would be thinking anything.

      1. I don’t know…I think it’s a combination of that and the fact they were hanging around a reservoir after midnight(in a restricted area) and were said to have careers as “chemical engineers”…

  3. Forgot to mention they were released??? Sorry for the non weather comment, but something seems really wrong with this!

    1. Thanks OS and I’d agree with Longshot. I see Cliff Mass’s name more often – maybe because my cousin in Seattle (a weather buff) has mentioned him several times so I’m aware of the name.

  4. Well I can say the following today:

I am almost recovered from the Bruin’s win. My heart rate is currently “down” to 500 beats per minute. πŸ™‚
It is my B’day. Don’t anyone ask!
My birtdate is always the 1st day of a weather “season” which I will ask you to name.

Yes, this is real trivia. Answer later today.

    1. Hint: This “weather season” has to do with a particular type of storm.

Footnote to the B’s win: Milan Lucic had a bad year, but he woke up in the playoffs for sure. He is nothing less than a true hockey animal. For those interested in his performance in the 7th game.

    2. A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU – I won’t ask but suspect you are a young chicken πŸ˜‰ Hope you have a special celebration!!!!

  5. As indicated by TK & other mets, very windy tomorrow and probably bone dry air along with it. Wondering a little about fire watches.

    1. My son is in ft worth tx. tornados all over,
big one headed SE of his area. Dodged a bullet.
      Really scary for awhile.

      1. Oh dear. Good to hear. My sister in law (delta) lived in Irving TX for years before moving to Atlanta.

        1. Oh boy OS. Just checked the radar. Literally just south of your son. Hoping everyone there stays safe

          1. Thanks Vicki. Missed by about 20 miles or so.
worried about the NW of him. That cell has tops to 32,000 feet with 1.75 inch hail.
            Watching….

      2. What a bleepity bleep night. Wife and I were on the phone with my son
in Ft. worth who wisely cancelled dinner plans. May call him again soon. At first it looked like a large wedge tornado was headed directly towards his location, but eventually took a turn to the Southeast. Now apparently safe from that one. However, a new mesoscale cell has erupted to the NW of his area, now headed directly towards him. His hotel is at I820 just East of I35.

Interesting how hotels handle this. He checked with the front desk and was told that IF a warning were issued, they would knock on each door and instruct patrons to grab 2 pillows and go out into the hallway and crouch against the wall with the pillows. Pretty scary stuff.

I am somewhat worried that this new cell (L2 on this display) may develop
        a t0rnadic signature.

          1. There should have been a few question marks after Game plan. Seems pretty pathetic for a tornado prone area

  6. I see a cell still to go thru Fort Worth but no warning attached. After that it looks to quiet down……well that’s my view of the radar. It may be incorrect

  7. The areas that got hit by the tornadoes, Granbury and Cleburne, TX, are SW of Dallas. It is believed that the tornadoes were EF3 or EF4. Unfortunately a number of people died and many are missing. There is a question of whether there was an adequate warning.

  8. Answer to the trivia question.

May 15th is the 1st day of a weather β€œseason” which I will ask you to name.

Those who answered the beginning of the Pacific Hurricane season are correct — in fact I think everyone who answered, got it right.(Itis June 1st for the Atlantic Hurricane season.)

  9. NOTE TO TK: Some comments are posting out of order chronologically. See Vicki’s post on May 15th at 10:22 PM followed by posts from OS and myself dated May 16th which are then followed by other posts dated May 15th again. Thank you.

  10. Wow OS I saw the coverage on the news just now. Horrific. Glad your son is safe. You are right about the terror at night and I can’t imagine being in a hotel either.

  11. Unfortunately, I read on CNN there was loss of life in Texas from the tornados last evening….. Up to yesterday, it had been such a quiet severe weather season, unfortunately, much like the tropics, it only takes one event.

    1. Incredible pic. The first comment is there – they just keep going before some of the older comments

  12. The big buzz in ny are the Knicks tonight, just talked to a few friends and in Times Square there are electronic signs everywhere saying go Knicks,

    Reply

  14. I also saw a poll that asked ny what game they were gonna watch tonight and a whopping 76% said the Knicks, impressive

    1. I think I heard if it hits 80 at logan it will be the first day since September 14, 2012??? Maybe I made that up. Something would be the first since that date πŸ™‚

      1. That sounds about right Vicki …. Its been a while. For as hot as our summer’s can be … and the fact that we are slightly closer to the equator than the pole ….. The idea that it usually hits 80F or higher only about 3-4 months of the year really shows how dominant Eastern Canada and the Atlantic Ocean are in controlling our local climate.

      2. Very different here, last time we hit 80 deg was Oct 5th and we hit 80 degrees for the 1st time a week ago, 80+ runs from May-Sept on average

          1. Of course there is always the potential for 80 degree days outside of those months πŸ™‚

  15. Ocean is ranging from 50 north 55 in Boston and 60 degrees south, pool temp 64.8 degrees

  16. Well,,the traffic on 93 and 95 north has delayed our visit to my dad till tomorrow, sitting in traffic for 2 in a half hrs and only half way there, we’ve decided to go tomorrow morning late, it’s ashame that we have to much traffic and can’t build more highways and roads

  17. Boy did they BLOW the forecast in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metro area yesterday.
My son told me that the forecast yesterday AM was for evening thunderstorms with
some of them reaching strong status. Yeah Ya think??? Wouldn’t happen here. We’d be all over it. πŸ˜€ Of course we virtually NEVER get those situations.

Oh, btw during the height of those storms I was changing the radar type on the
Nexrad site. I clicked on Wind Profile and it told the whole story. Surface winds
were strong from the SouthEast and they changed to the South, then Southwest and then the West with height. Pretty dramatic.

    1. I cannot imagine the night your son had and you had. Awful damage in that area. I thought you were saying your son lived there. I also cannot imagine being in a totally unfamiliar area.

Do you have a link to that radar? I don’t think I have it. Thanks OS

        1. Charlie, Good point. However, those guys are like us, only
much more skilled, but just as intense. However, the
forecasts people were getting gave no hint whatsoever of
the devastation to befall North Texas.

      1. I got the NEXRAD app. What’s the difference between reflectivity and Doppler velocity and Doppler relative??

      2. Vicki,

No he doesn’t live there, in fact he lives in our house renting
the 1st floor with a room mate. The reason he is in Ft. Worth
was because his room mate’s Mom had a massive stroke. She
passed away on Wednesday, the day of the storms, making what
they went through that much worse. Funeral arrangements
are being made today. My wife and I are very likely to head
down there to attend the funeral.

Thank you Vicki. You are very kind.

          1. Thanks, OS – I marked all links and will clearly have to read the last one when I can fully concentrate and I think a good deal of it is over my head πŸ™‚

        1. Oh no — what a tragic experience for your son and his roommate and family. I’m so sorry.

  18. B+ in english, A in bio and im 98% certain that i pulled the A in coral reef ecology which really was just a repeat of my enviormental class of high school with a few things of coral reefs , now i only need to know my math grade .. gulp, there was stuff on there that we never went over in class or in the book so yeah not so confident. in the math.

    1. I’ll post again later in case you don’t see the link since the blog is putting new comments above old ones.
