Sunshine Sabbatical

4:36PM

We have had much sunshine during the last few weeks, in a season when a grey sky can be common. That grey sky will be a little more the rule during the coming several days as we will be in the vicinity of a frontal boundary wavering around the region along with the passage of several low pressure areas. It will not rain all the time, and temperatures will depend on the exact positioning of the front at any given time. This will be a lower than average confidence forecast due to these factors, so check back for updates.

Forecast for southeastern New England (southern NH, eastern MA, and RI)…

TONIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 48-53. Wind SE under 10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Partly sunny through early afternoon then cloudy. Highs in the 60s. Wind SE to S 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Chance of showers. Lows in the 50s. Wind S 5-10 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly cloudy. Highs around 70 but cooler in some coastal areas. Wind S to SW 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY-FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy. Daily risk of showers and a few thunderstorms. Lows in the 50s. Highs in the 70s except 60s coastal areas.

SATURDAY: Variably cloudy. Isolated showers. Low 50. High 65.

  1. Answers to today’s TWO Accuweather Trivia Quizzes.

I will start by saying that BZ and others made a mess out of today’s 1st quiz! They could not have possibly got things more wrong than they did, sooooo……… I am rephrasing the question.

    1. Which of the following, if any, is not classic (textbook) stage of a tornado?

    A. Dust stage
    B. Organization stage
    C. Mature stage
    D. Shrink stage
    E. Rope stage

Actually they are all stages of tornado development, but all tornadoes do not necessarily go through all stages. (Also some believe that there are just 3 and others 4 stages to tornado development.)

    2. Today’s 2nd AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

How many tornadoes are formed in the US in an average year?

    A. 500
    B. 800
    C. 1500
    D. 2000

    The correct answer is B.

    1. I always thought the high spine was designated for tall skyscrapers, people r getting nasty on both sides, again most of the nastiness is young against old and letting the old win hence why the young move away

  2. Charlie during my visit to Cuba a lot of talk was about how does Cuba keep its history/roots when the Castro’s are gone and not end up like many islands that are tourist traps. Boston came up as a great example of a city keeping its history and not allowing itself to get over developed. So I for one appreciate the old way of thinking even though I am 39 in a couple days 🙂

    1. Hadi I will echo you and my kids all have a huge network of friends who love Boston and its history. They do not want to be like another city because we are Boston and we are unique because we hold our history dear. We have relatives who visit regularly from all corners of the world and they feel the same

      1. Exactly Vicki we’ve pushed them out of state so now all they can do is visit, it’s ashame, really is

      2. Lol been to San Fran recently and what comparisons we could make between boston and San Fran can be no longer, San Fran is way bigger than boston in everyway but land wise but they have just broken ground on a 1,100 ft skyscraper in downtown San Fran, maybe there all moving there

        1. Or maybe hadi is right this new tower will take its soul from San Fran, don’t hold your breath

        2. Charlie my brother in law and family live in San Francisco and LOVE Boston. It was first choice for his kids for college because of what it has to offer

  3. Boston mixes education, technology and history better than any city in the US. San Franscico is a close 2nd. Have you even been to Shanghai China, it’s lost it’s soul bc of the massive high rises throughout the city.

  4. For those who have not seen ice calving before, this is worth watching. Calving takes place regularly and can start about this time of year. You can actually take calving tours. This is considered to be a rare video.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hC3VTgIPoGU

Right now, scientists are working to model the predictability of calving. One day so called “calving law” will take into account the ice thickness, density, temperature, impurity, stress, etc. Much like the predictability of many major weather events, it’s not so easy.

    1. I hadnt heard the term calving. Thank you very much for posting this. Its both spectacular and chilling.

  5. Logan at 52F with a light NE wind, meanwhile its 63F here in Marshfield with a SW wind, along with plenty of bonus sunshine.

  6. My computer has been working, but would not connect to the Internet. I was connecting through Linksys which stopped working. Finally today, I tried connecting via Windows wireless and it worked fine.

What a stressful week. My son is still in Texas and last night was in Edmond, OK
to experience a nasty T-storm with a micro burst that knocked out power for an
hour. At least the people he was visiting had a storm/safe room in the interior
of the house, reinforced with concrete.

We are joining him tomorrow night to attend the wake and funeral. Of course, there
is a threat of Severe weather for Tuesday. Go Figure.

  7. Just a quick take on Boston (old vs new, etc). In the late 50s Boston tore down a vital (albeit aging) neighborhood….The West End. What was lost in tearing down that neighborhood is immeasurable. What was gained was a chunk of unattractive concrete (City Hall Plaza, etc). Yes..at that point in the late 50s Boston had become a dying city but John Collins and others knew something had to be done…imho they went about it the wrong way. Kevin White however did things somewhat better by rehabbing what was old (Quincy Market, parts of the South End, etc). The answer is not always in building new or bigger or more glitzy…there are other options. As the city rebounded in the 70s, 80s and early 90s we had a very liveable city that was something to be proud of. Now we are on the verge of becoming a “tourist city”. I know many people (including myself) who don’t enjoy going into the city as much as they used to (that includes old and young). Imho Boston may never be what some call a world class city. Please don’t take it the wrong way….what I mean is that due to size of the city..population and geographics…we may never become a NYC, Chicago, LA, etc. But (once again Imho) I feel that we are already a world class city in so many ways and “keeping up with the Joneses” may not be the best solution for Boston.

    1. New Englanders are know to be selfish, I’m a new Englander, major gentrification now effecting the pressure Boston puts on suburbs, it’s ashame that a city that wants to be bigger and thrive and it’s own people detour it make up lies why skyscrapers r bad, I feel for Boston, if we can’t build in the suburbs and now we can’t build in Boston, then were can we build? Put it this way come back in a 100 yrs and it will be run down and electoral college number for this state will be down to 2 or 3, just ashame

      1. Charlie…..Is Boston just for those who visit the city or also for those who live there too? Your thought process is actually somewhat selfish..you aren’t really thinking of the people who live there (or even in the suburbs). Build those skyscrapers take away what is there and see if families and those who now live there can still live there 20 years from now. Boston is one of the most expensive cities to live in and that trend will continue unless we make the cities liveable and affordable for those who want to live and visit. Cities will always go through periods of good and bad….the question is how we address the bad…not with tearing down the old and replacing it with a concrete and steel jungle but rehabbing, preserving and mixing in some new with the old. IMHO your outlook is very shortsighted.

          1. what…no “see ya” or “talk to you tomorrow” or one of your usual sign offs that tries to cap the conversation so it looks like you’ve made your point and that’s it? Oh…wait…I guess this is a new one 😉 You are a gem Charlie!

            1. I just think its selfish that we new englanders push away our own new englanders, it’s called gentrification, ill be back, it’s weird bc the people I talk to agree with myself, I go to all these meetings and different conventions trying to fight for this city bc no one else is

    2. Boston will never be a world class city and its ashame bc it could be with just some compromise, anyways enough of my crazy rant 🙂

    1. OS…I saw those vids and they are so wild. I can’t imagine being on the beach watching that. Youtube has a bunch of videos for this airport.

      1. The opposite was true as well. When those big jumbo jets would take off they started with the jet exhaust right at that fence and would practically knock people over on the beach. Insane.

  8. sunny, just hit 70 degrees, getting the pool open today and got a new solar cover, beach possibly next weekend. yeah this is much better than last week 😀

  9. could this up commin week be humid with mostly clouds but periods of sun as well and the sun leads to the thunderstorms and showers. with temps in the 70s i believe that is what this week is going to be like.

    1. Its going to be like Florida this week. Thursday could be the day where the thunderstorm activity could be potent but a lot can change between now and then.

    1. So do I 🙂

I’ve lived in Dorchester, Southie, Roslindale, West Roxbury, Brighton, Charlestown and Beacon Hill….loved them all!!

      1. Me three and I am not saying so selfishly. I’m saying so with an overwhelming feeling of pride in what we represent and what and who we are.

    2. All ill say is we the people will eventually make this a small city overtime and fall in every rankings except education, even our high tech areas are slowly moving to Silicon Valley, do you know rt 128 started 8 yrs before Silicon Valley but the presidents of oracle and a whole bunch of other comp said eventually they will be there, the president said most take the offer to Silicon Valley anyways and responded also by saying its hard to build, for crying out loud libert mutual headquarters almost went south when the people of Boston were fighting over a 22 story building being to tall, again the people will eventually kill this city in the long run if we let them, onto the weather

  10. Some of you may remember that last July I went to Snowshoe WV with a couple of radio friends of mine to see what we could hear on FM from the top of Snowshoe Mtn. (one of the few ski resorts where the lodge is on top of the mountain). We heard over 300 FM stations from around 12 states.

Well this year we are headed out to Valentine Nebraska in a couple of weeks. A day and half drive to get there but hopefully it will be worth it. Valentine is located just south of the Sand Hills of South Dakota. Been looking at some of the early models and it looks like a mixed bag for the first half of the week. Hopefully that will change and we will have a nice big stable High sitting over us to set up enhanced/tropo ducting conditions. Can’t Wait 🙂

    1. A road trip. I love road trips and haven’t been on one in too long. I’d enjoy visiting that area.

        1. Hey Charlie,

I don’t post my email in a forum that the public can view. I was just giving my viewpoint as a counterpoint to your views. In a sense we probably agree on some things and disagree on others about this subject. I just don’t consider things as black and white as you portray them sometimes.

  11. I meant to post yesterday and maybe I did. We were with macs aunts family who flew in from all over. His aunt who would have been 96 yesterday passed away Thursday. What a full life she had. Anyway I found a WGBH special on YouTube entitled Boston the way it was. I think there are 20 or so short parts but the little I’ve watched so far had some nice memories.

  12. Tornado watches popping up across parts of the plains and midwest. Hopefully there will be no repeat of what happened in Texas last Wednesday.

      1. Thanks for the link Old Salty. I see breaks in those clouds which is not good since that will further destablize the atmosphere.

    1. Yes, and it spawned a Wedge Tornado. TWC had Impressive live video
and I watched it develop. Incredible!!

        1. CNN reporting three tornadoes have touched down. One in Kansas near wichita and two in Oklahoma.

  13. Oh did I ever say today that our New England Weather really blows!

An absolutely DISGUSTING day. I HATE Spring in New England! HATE IT!

    1. I actually love a day like this in the Spring. Classic late Spring warm front action now.

  14. Well, I still stand by my statement. I still think the weather sucked here today. 😀

Btw, Horrified at the video footage of destruction near Shawnee, OK. Fatalities reported.

How do those folks deal with it all?

    1. I could not live there. I will repeat that while New England has outbreaks of sever weather it seems to me its one of the least worrisome areas.

    2. I think even YOU would take today’s weather here over what they have gone through. 😉

Seriously, it has been nasty out there. We know it happens, but this is going to end up as one of the historical outbreaks, maybe not in # of tornadoes, but damage and casualties, unfortunately.

      1. Of course I’d take our weather today over that. No brainer.

I heard on TWC that there were 21 confirmed tornadoes today.

Btw, My son’s friends who live in Edmond, OK, could see one
of those tornadoes today. It was the one that KFOR had the footage with the helicopter. Freaky, scary weather.

We’ll be in Ft. Worth tomorrow night until Wednesday night. We’ll see what happens. Pretty decent shot of severe weather tomorrow and somewhat less of a chance on Tuesday. Wednesday looks to be in the clear. 😀

        1. Be safe OS. I’m keeping you in my thoughts. My business associate heads to Milwaukee tomorrow. I don’t know what he can expect
