Unsettled Through Friday, Better Holiday Weekend

3:00AM

As expected, a few air mass boundaries are dancing around southern New England, resulting in contrasting temperatures and areas of showers, thunderstorms, and fog. This will continue into Friday, waiting for a final cold front to slowly pass through the region from the west. By the time we get to the Memorial Day Weekend, it should be better, though the start of the weekend is likely to feature some clouds and a shot of cool air, with improvement toward the end. I’m being optimistic for the start of it though, I must admit, as some guidance lingers low pressure wet weather not only Friday but also Saturday…

A sneak peek deeper into next week indicates a potential shot of very warm to hot air.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England…

TODAY: Variably cloudy. Areas of fog mostly Boston northward early. Showers/thunderstorms possibly early and again scattered during midday and afternoon. Highs ranging from upper 60s Cape Cod to 80-85 inland eastern MA and southern NH. 1. Thanks, TK.

I read about Chris in the earlier blog and I couldn’t believe it. Very sad.

We got quite a hailstorm yesterday, I never saw anything like it. I have seen hail before – bouncing off the ground. But late yesterday aft., there were patches of ground that were covered with hail! The hailstorm then turned into rain and when it stopped there was still hail on the ground. I went outside and brought a hailstone in to show my husband. It was about the size of a nickel – kind of a round shape but very thick. No, I didn’t put it in the freezer! But it was a fascinating experience!

    1. Hi Rainshine. We had hail also but not that much by any means. It turned to rain too fast to accumulate. Did you have any car damage or damage to anything else??

  2. I think…..again I am never positive….Hadi’s birthday is today.

    Happy Birthday Hadi!!

        1. Well that’s not correct. There are at least four (or is it eight) of us. Gayle has a birthday but I have two dates….is it the 23rd or 26th???

          1. What’s day does your b-day fall on, Vicki?
            I’m the 27th, and I’m going to be 39, again 🙂
I grew up with 5 Geminis (4 siblings and mother), which sure made for some crazy times at the Smith home! My dad didn’t stand a chance 🙂

            1. Oh my – all those birthdays at once??? My son is in March and we are June, July and two in August and he says summer is too expensive.

I’m at the other end of Gemini – June 18.

  3. Sad news about tornado Chris. One just never knows.

Weather here, luckily was very uneventful.

Flight home tonight. Hopefully any convection will be long gone before
We land close to midnight. Be careful all today with any severe weather.

    1. Glad the weather cooperated. Your purpose for being there was difficult enough. Safe travels!

  4. I am keeping my fingers crossed that heat for late next week remains in the “potential” phase. I suppose though we are lucky that HHH has stayed away as long as it has.

  5. Good afternoon just hit cust 463, lawns r looking beautiful with these daily rains, it appears it continues through next week 🙂

  6. GFS is not looking good if you want a sunny weekend. Looks like the upper low hangs out through part of Sunday and western New England gets over an inch of rain on Sat.

  7. Severe Thunderstorm Watch out – looks like the same area that was yesterday. Severe thunderstorm warnings and even a tornado warning out in NY state already.

    1. The watch is covering NY state and Western New England into the Worcester area, I believe.

      1. I saw that tornado warning, rainshine. Am I just more aware of tornado warnings or are there more in the northeast in the past couple of years? I’m suspecting I’m just more aware now that I have radars on phone and tablet??

        1. Probably both – but I am guessing that w/all the fancy equip. and gadgets we have now – which is a good thing – we can see a possible tornado on radar even if it doesn’t develop – and if it does – get some warning out asap.

  8. Question – when a cold front comes through and the sun has been out, there is more instability and there can be strong storms. Now, when a warm front comes through, do we need sun to create instability or does it matter? With a warm front passage, can we still get strong storms even if it is cloudy?

    1. yes you can expecially if its humid and warm. if its cool and humid sometimes. if its cool and dry forget it.

  9. im thinking isolated severe weather mainly western half of the state if that. there has been alot of cloud cover and its been stuck in the low 60s. been seeing on and off dizzle which probably has killed any chance of thunderstorms. those storms out by ny has a long way till they get here. and they will be fighting the maritime air . so not really expecting much but showers around eastern mass .

  10. Happy Birthday Hadi!!!
Different day same story with severe thunderstorm watch for the same counties as yesterday. Once again level 2 activity since the threat is there for some severe weather. A 1 outside the watch where I am expecting non severe storms.

  11. Each successive run of the EURO is looking like worse and worse Holiday Weekend Weather …. and on day 10, June 1, it would be 90F to 95F.

    1. and GFS is somewhat in agreement too! Not good. I can remember many cold, damp memorial day weekends in the late 80’s and early 90’s.

  12. Thanks jwr. I just knocked my iPad over trying to get to the radar. I wasn’t watching. Don’t know where retrac is ?????

    1. Well that post made little sense. See what happens when I panic…..Anyway. JWR. Thank you very much for letting everyone know.

  13. The dewpoints are 65F plus, from Worcester westward …….. perhaps eastern sections have not seen their high temps yet today …….

    1. Thanks Tom for the article. Is that 5&10 by chance the same store as some of us “older” folks remember? 😉

      1. It is. Chris and I talked about it a bit because i was completelh impressed. There is also one still in Belmont where I grew up and I have wonderful memories of the 5&10 as do so many of us

  14. Been so busy, 1st was there an actual tornado? And 2 was this on the mass NH border in northern Worcester cty?

  15. All updated.
Changed the weekend forecast unfortunately. Too much evidence for cut-off.
