Reversal Of Fortune?

7:43PM

On the previous update, I had optimism about the upcoming holiday weekend. I no longer feel such optimism. Reliable guidance takes a cold front slowly into the region Thursday into Friday, stalls it, develops low pressure on it, which then cuts off and sits around for a few days. If this is indeed the scenario, then there will be some uncertainty as to how fast the low finally lifts out, and if it is quickly enough to salvage some of the long weekend. The plus side of this would be that any rain would be welcomed to ease dry conditions, and periods of rain would also keep pollen counts down.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England…

TONIGHT: Low clouds and areas of fog especially Boston area northward and along the coast to the south, with variable clouds elsewhere. Lows in the 50s. Wind light variable.

THURSDAY: Variably cloudy. Areas of fog early. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms. Highs in the 70s except 60s coastal areas and Cape Cod. Wind S to SW 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Showers and thunderstorms likely. Lows in the 50s. Wind variable 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Cloudy. Showers likely. Chance of thunderstorms. Highs in the 60s. Wind variable 10-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Cloudy. Periods of rain/drizzle. Low 48. High 58.

SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Low 48. High 62.

MONDAY – MEMORIAL DAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of showers. Low 52. High 66.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 52. High 70.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Low 55. High 77.

  1. Ugh!! We are supposed to have a family cook out. I think it’s going to be a cook-in.

    1. Darn. I’m sorry longshot

On the bright side – if family is there all is right with the world :)))

  2. Thanks TK ! Camping in the rain, oh well …..

3 EURO runs in a row of a heat blast late next week. This morning’s run I almost want to print just because its an eye opener.

A blast of 20 to 22C air at 850 mb around June 1st. Wow !! With a WNW surface wind, that unique setup when our region closes in on 100F.

Of course, in a few more days, subsequent EURO runs will project the heat more towards the mid-Atlantic. Our region will get a day in the 80s before a backdoor front cuts the heat off at the pass.

    1. Sorry Tom. I’m trying to think of a positive take on camping in the rain. Its not easy 🙁

  3. 107.9 Boston was talking about how it’s ashame that everyone looks forward to this weekend for it to be completely washed out, I’m sure most are in ugh mode, like the commercial, “wanna get away”

  4. Good morning,

First of all, a big thanks to Tom for posting the link on Tornado Chris.

Some comments on the trip to Fort Worth.

    1. I was pleased that I had a tablet with me. Having instantaneous access
to the radar was so comforting. The tornado activity on Monday stayed clear
of the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex. When I awoke Tuesday AM to see totally
and completely cloudy skies, I breathed a sigh of relief, even though the Metroplex
was smack dab in the middle of a tornado watch box. Then later, when I saw
developing storms to the West setting up in a line, I was pretty well convinced that
we had dodged a bullet and thankfully, we did. The line actually went through remarkably uneventfully. I only heard 2 claps of thunder and the rain was no big deal

    2. The wake and funeral services went as well as expected.

    3. The whole area seems to be under construction. One had to be Houdini to get around. Barely made our flight home.

    4. Comments on airline plane boarding and deplaning: They should eliminate overhead
storage! If one can’t fit carry on baggage under the seat, then it should be checked.
ALL of the time boarding and deplaning is taken up by people storing or removing
baggage from the overhead compartments. (Rant #1)

    5. New England weather sucks! I couldn’t believe the CRAP weather here when we
landed late last night. AND it looks like we’re in for more of the same. (Rant #2)

Your resident GRUMP has returned. 😀 😀 😀

    1. Oh and Rant #3, how could I forget this one:

People who reside in the tornado prone area of “tornado Alley” from North texas through Nebraska at least, should ALL have some sort of storm cellar/shelter.
Sadly, many even most do not.

Further, it is absolutely CRIMINAL that homes are built in those areas
WITHOUT storm shelters. It should be MANDATORY and part of the building code.

I just don’t get it. Makes no sense to me. Maybe it’s just I. I can be about
      as logical as SPOCK sometimes.

      😀 😀 😀

      1. Continued rant.

No politician down there has the stones to file legislation to
make it mandatory for storm shelters. One should NOT be
able to purchase a home WITHOUT a shelter. It should be part of the home inspection. No storm shelter => the home can’t be sold. PERIOD.

It may be a hard pill to swallow, but it NEEDS to be done.

And for (!@*(#&*(!&@#*& ALL SCHOOLS should have adequate shelter as well. Businesses as too.

There is no need to have this kind of loss of life.

I am still horrified at the images of devastation I have seen.

And while I am at it, why were those poor little children interviewed on camera? Can you say ratings. Shameful.

        Sorry, just letting loose.

  5. OS. Glad you are back safely. My sister in law says the same about overheads. She had injured herself several times because passengers want the attendants to put them up and take them down and the majority are too big to fit. I agree all schools should have some sort of storm shelter. I can’t believe those children had to huddle in the halls. Inexcusable. The private hime shelters are a problem there because the ground is either sand or ledge. Blasting the ledge is very expensive. Building anything underground in sandy soil won’t hold up. There is new tech in above ground shelters but I am not sure its perfected. Maybe someone here knows. I think there needs to be a govt credit of some sort to help those who can’t afford one. I sure could not live in any tornado prone area without one. I believe there are govt mandates re structure in earthquake prone areas

    1. Vicki, I agree with your sentiment.

Btw, while I was there, they had a couple of specials on storm cellars, even
a local company. Despite the soil situation, these can be installed below ground
at a relatively reasonable price. Certainly can easily be done at time of
construction for new homes. It is not as easily retro-fitted to an existing home,
but there are local companies in those areas that specialize in these home
      storm shelters.

They interviewed a Moore, OK resident who, on camera, told of how his wife
was worried and insisted on getting a shelter installed. This guy had it installed a year ago, and it saved his and his family’s life in this tornado.

A Government credit. Absolutely. I have no problem with that whatsoever.

      It needs to be done.

      Crazy insanity.

I sure wouldn’t live there without it. If I couldn’t afford it, I’d build it myself.

These shelters are self contained units. It gets delivered and inserted into
the whole dug into the ground. They have built in stairs and benches.
They are pretty nice, considering their use.

      😀

      1. Then its a no brainer OS as long as the soil is sandy. I wonder what the expense is to blast through ledge. That is probably where financial assistance would be needed. I don’t see how people can live without them. Thank you for the information.

          1. Thanks OS. At a meeting so only read quickly but of this is the installed price it isn’t bad when you compare it to the risk.

  6. As far as our weather, ill take this over what can happen most everywhere else. My first thought when Charlie mentioned the radio station complaining was at least we have a home to be stuck in if the weekend is less than expected. And we need the rain badly.

      1. Hehehehe. Yes we do :). I thought the media complaining was in bad taste considering but among friends……well that’s what friends are for. We all look forward to special times and are naturally disappointed when the weather interferes.

  7. I agree os but they will never do that, in that part of this country if you own the land it’s your land and if you don’t effect someone’s else’s property or lives then those states will never pass a regulation to tell you what you have to do, very different here, they live a little more free, just had some friends trying to purchase a house in mass, and they say its hell, anyways take it easy

    1. A lot of those people ESP in Texas think Boston is a joke, i disagree,, a matter of fact, Europeans know more and have more interest about Boston than some of those extreme southern states from what I’ve seen and lived there

    2. Charlie,

I agree. I was going to put it in political terms, but restrained myself. 😀

    3. It may be difficult, but the regs are there for a legitimate reason, namely to
PROTECT the consumer. Something other states don’t seem to get. 😀

      1. I was also trying to keep it non political. I think being a weather phenomenon it is a great discussion. I thought CA had codes for new buildings and reconstruction for earthquakes. Would the requirement for a storm shelter be the same?

        1. Certainly something along those lines. Exactly and great
point Vicki. If California has special building codes for
Earthquakes, then certainly tornado alley states should
have special codes for Tornado safety, yet they don’t.

BACKWARDS states, if you ask me and certainly another reason why I would NEVER reside there.

I was once offered a job in Oklahoma City. I said no
faster than it wold take the clock to tick off one second.

          😀

          1. I would never live in the plains. I would never live to far away from the ocean. and i would like to stay close to the mountains. and i honestly would never live on the gulf. I rather have snow storms, blizzards ,nor easters and all 4 seasons. thanks.

          2. I think you would have gone without your wife OS ;). With very good reason. I would never live there either. Nor would I live in an earthquake prone area. I’m a coward. I think it takes a special kind of nerve to do it

            1. Vicki,

If not married, not sure. Honestly, I still
              don’t think I would have gone. 😀

  8. Update early evening…
Going to squeeze a quick round of mini golf in with my son and 2 of my friends while it isn’t raining!

  9. I have wonderful friends that live in Texas and are from Boston, they don’t think Boston is a joke but seems as though a lot of you think Texas is a joke. That is too bad. Some wonderful people live in Texas.

    1. My sister in law lived in Irving for years and loved it. My son loves Austin. I’m sorry to say I haven’t been. It seems at times that Mother Nature is not kind to tx. I don’t remember anyone here saying anything about tx. Or any other state

      1. Sorry I never finished that as the break at the meeting I was at ended. I am sorry if anyone said anything about Texas. I think all of our states are beautiful. Of course I am a bit prejudiced when it comes to New England. 🙂

  10. I see an Atlantic Hurricane Season forecast prediction was released today. To say the least, it looks ominous. No El Nino to increase shear in the tropical Atlantic …. Warmer than normal ocean temps and an overall climate setup conducive to sending healthy tropical waves off of the African Coast.

  11. JJ have the storms been training (is that the correct term) over you? If not they look close.

    Just wind here.

      1. Hi Emily. Are your class over for the summer? I had a great day. I was at Babson for a meeting and my favorite part is the food. They do an exceptional job. I’m just there one day this week but go for four days week after next !!! Thank you for asking 🙂

    1. Hi Vicki…. Yes that is the correct term training when storms go over the same area. We had multiple flood warnings across
CT today including my county Litchfield. It came down in buckets mid afternoon with the thunder and lightning thrown
      in for good measure.

      1. I kept checking the radar since its macs golf league day and saw cells and more cells over you. Are you below normal for rain?

  12. I loved loved loved how it was cloudy and warm today. I love the feel of it. I am not sure what it reminds me of, or why I love it so much, but I just do 😀

    How was everyone’s day?

I went mini golfing with TK and friends, and he won 😉 It was windy out, but nonetheless it was perfect weather for it. It’s always the best when it is not too hot or too cold 🙂

    1. Emily I saw a Charles dickens quote today

“There is something good in all weathers”.

I agree and it sure seems as if you do also

  13. Hadi yes they do, I’ve lived there and they do not think Boston as America, to them Texas is America, I certainly don’t agree with them but a lot of people in the southern states think Boston or Massachusetts will slowly diminish, when I lived there they used to have commercials stating how the American future belongs in Texas and stated how the north were losing all there jobs to the sun belt and eventually this country will be ruled from the south, I don’t want this or do I agree but when you look at the numbers it’s staggering how Mass could seriously only have an electoral number of 5 by just 2060, we either wake up or we don’t, it’s up to us

    1. In the end it just makes us more powerless than we used to be that’s all , anyways back to the weather

    2. They always talk about how we have rules for everything that’s why they will never force somebody to get a tornado shelter like I said if it doesn’t effect another Life or property the states down there will never vote it in never , good night 🙂

      1. Charlie a good part of our extended family live in the south including charleston, Atlanta, Charlotte, Florida. They all love Boston. I told my SIL what you said about TX and she has no idea where you got that idea.

  14. TX vs MA? Folks, it’s all about NE weather and the B’s, who made me sick tonight. Ugh!

    1. most of eastern massachusetts was spared the heavy rainfall vicki the line of showers and storms basically was outside of 495 the entire time. and that area is still out there but now an area of rain has moved up from the south and moved over the area and even then the hieviest of this is across southeast mass. northeast mass is going to be spared the heaviest of the rainfall. between tonight and tomorrow morning.

      1. Sorry Matt – I should have been more specific. I was just referring to the swath of rain that had just gone over Framingham. On radar it looked to hold a whole lot more moisture than it did. We do have a flood watch in affect for Framingham (at least that’s the email I got from the NWS this morning) but we will need a whole lot more rain than we’ve had – that’s for sure 🙂

  15. this weather is going to interfer with my plans for toworrow i was going to go on my float in the pool with my mom so when my brothers got home they would be jelious. but no the rain and cold temps had to get in the way god darnit mother nature.

  16. Good Morning.

Someone above summed it up well: YUCK

That’s about all I have to say today. Thanks

  17. I was lying…Of course I’ll say more:

    1. Re: Texas ALL of the people we encountered in Texas were wonderful, Very nice and friendly. Still think they are out to lunch regarding mandatory shelter regulations.

    2. Our weather SUCKS.

    3. The Bruins performance last night was pitiful! And while I’m at it, NBC can go S**T in a hat somewhere. We were watching the 1st period on NBCSN and the period ended and the intermission show was on. Then I said to my wife, must be longer intermissions during Stanley Cup play and then they started the damn Red Wings-Black Hawks Game with ZERO MENTION of where the Bruins-Rangers game went. It took me 1/2 an hour to finally find the game on CNBC. NBC SHAME ON YOU!!!!
That kind of CRAP really blows!

    1. That happened to me too. It took my 10-year son who was watching in a different part of the house to clue me in.

  18. hahahahahahaha – I know you are not being funny OS but I’m doubled over here laughing. You sound like me when I get on a roll.

My feeling is if it’s going to be dark and damp and gloomy it should rain…..heaven knows we need it.

I think mandatory regulations are a real bone of contention with some. They see it as big brother interfering. Someone said the other day that it’s common sense and you can’t regulate common sense. IMHO there is no more common sense …… e.g., people who should have shelters do not. And that makes regulation necessary. But it’s the same everywhere. In the new construction in Boston I would think that sprinker systems would be mandatory and they are not.

For a game that big, how could they NOT make it obvious that there was a change of channel??? No wonder you are upset.

      1. Vicki,

As far as I know, all new construction is absolutely required
to have sprinkler systems. New homes MUST have smoke
        detectors.

        😀

        1. I don’t think it is in Boston but may be wrong. I asked my son in law is a commercial plumber in Boston and said it’s too expensive and not required by law. They of course do have to have smoke detectors.

            1. I’m talking about apt buildings not businesses and also reconstruction and I’m definitely not saying they are not. Ill have to dig a bit as I’m now curious

              1. Vicki,

You got me thinking. I am sitting in a new office building and we do NOT have sprinklers, but rather an extensive system of linked smoke detectors. So I suppose it depends
on the size, but there is a building code for fire protection one way or the other through smoke detectors and/or sprinklers. 😀 😀

                1. I found the code and its over 7500 Sq ft but it says something about not applying if there isn’t adequate pressure. Detectors are great but in a big building I think I’d want sprinklers going off while I evac. I do believe most of America accepts a lot of what we should not – like the storm shelters.

See how the discussion transitioned back to weather related – hehehehe 😉

      1. Interesting thing about this storm is the cold air behind it, which is forcing the changeover to snow overnight up in the Presidentials. While not really cold, any spot above 3000 feet will have some wet flakes at least, and above 4500 feet it’s Game On. Should be an interesting weekend for the rescue and search teams. Memorial Day weekend is traditionally the first weekend for day hikers up Mt. Washington. Needless to say, no-one who is unprepared should venture up beyond the Hermit Lake Shelters. Above that point, this storm could be deadly for anyone ascending Tuckerman’s.

        1. Now that is very telling. Now Memorial Day is the start of day hiking. When my dad was a youngun it was Massachustts ski weekend. I can only assume that is an indication of how our weather has changed

  19. I have had 1.06 inches of rain so far. .6 just since 9 this morning. Didn’t think I would end up with that much so far.

    1. 0.11 here today. 0.07 yesterday.

      Is that an inch 😉

I think N Attleboro is the only place in Eastern MA that isn’t shy of water.

      1. LOL. We have been very dry too. Just ended up with much more than other areas of eastern MA on this one. Hopefully not too much more….

  20. Me: Hey TK! Any snow threats?!

Other me: Why yes! Yes there is! Just NW of here in the hills!

Me: But it’s LATE MAY! It doesn’t snow in New England after the Equinox! Like almost never.

Other me: Oh well! First time for everything! And a second time. And a third time. It’s just weather and it has a lot of history.

Me: I think it’s time for a blog update… yes?

    Other me: Already done, dude!
