Some Heavy Rain, But Most Of Weekend Ok

3:37PM

Rain from advancing warm air aloft above cooler air at the surface, and additional tropical moisture from Tropical Storm Andrea, which is riding up the East Coast to pass over or near CapeΒ  Cod early Saturday, will bring beneficial rain to much of the region through early Saturday morning. In fact too much rain may fall in some places, resulting in stream and street flooding. The heaviest rain from this event is likely to be over interior eastern MA, with less toward Cape Cod. Winds, though they may be gusty especially over Cape Cod, will not pose a significant problem with the passage of the tropical low.

It looks like things move along quickly enough so that part of Saturday is salvaged, though a final disturbance may bring a few showers at night. Sunday will be the pick of the weekend with a weakΒ  high pressure sliver bringing fairly nice weather. This won’t last though, because another low pressure trough will swing from the Great Lakes into the Northeast early next week, bringing a return to unsettled weather.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England…

    1. Yeah I’ll do my best.

You know what’ll happen. We’ll have the drought in 2014… I’ll be a year off. πŸ˜›

      1. πŸ˜€

It is what it is, so I guess we’ll just deal with it.

In the meantime, it’s still a great night for a Hockey Game!

GO BRUINS!!!! C’mon guys, wrap it up TONIGHT!!!

        1. Indeed ! I cant wait for the game and mother nature has taken away having to check the Red Sox game every once in a while. πŸ™‚

  1. Continuing to nowcasting the radar, torrential rain south of Long Island, down the NJ coast and down to the northwest side of the low.

In this more continuous rain, most places locally are already around an inch and I’d think some of those more convective elements will be passing through later this evening.

I’m thinking 5 inch amounts wouldnt surprise me at Logan. Anyone else think that much is possible in Boston ?

    1. The center “appears” to be about 1/2 between Raleigh, NC and Norfolk, VA.

Admittedly, pretty much on the predicted path.

          1. Track still on track to clip extreme southeast MA IMHO. The heavy juice shuts off rather quickly over NJ. This thing is outta here first thing tomorrow morning and splashed of sun will be evident by mid to late morning.

  2. A wall of rain is on our doorstep! I think there could be some damage from rising waters. Many place already coming in over 1 inch QPF

    Thanks TK

  3. Again keep in mind GFS/NAM etc… not very good with system with tropical origins in terms of accurate QPF numbers

    1. Watch the dry slot. I think if anything, qpf numbers may be overdone in eastern MA. The CT river valley and the berskshires are spared the dry slot and thus are at greatest risk of receiving the heavier liquid totals in my opinion.

      1. Agreed AROD.

I just don’t see huge numbers in Eastern MA.

        About 2 inches tops.

        We shall see. πŸ˜€

  4. Thanks, TK.

We have been watching the French Open (tennis) the first part of today – actually – all along. We love watching tennis – we used to play some tennis when we were first married – that didn’t last long! πŸ™‚

Anyway, we’re getting beneficial rain and that’s good and it looks like the majority of the wknd. will be ok, and that’s good too.

Seems kind of early for a tropical system, but I am sure we have had tropical systems this early before – I just can’t recall. In any case, have a safe night if anyone is going out.

    1. Oooh – I meant playing tennis didn’t last long!! I’d serve, my husband would pick up the ball, he’d serve, I’d pick up the ball, etc. No, we’ve been married a long time! πŸ™‚

  5. Watch the dry slot’s northward extend. That likely is what will be the saving grace for eastern southern new england as it continues to progress northward and shut off the heavy/torrential rain in eastern sections by very early Saturday morning while the western part of the state continues to be enveloped by the strongest axis of rainfall. That is where the heaviest rainfall totals seem most likely while ‘ only ‘ an inch or two falls in eastern MA. I feel QPF numbers, if anything, may be too generous in eastern sections.

  6. Circulation center of Andrea is probably going right down the Cape Cod Canal and then over P-Town.

  7. Thanks Tk, it appears the heaviest of the heaviest rain will happen between 7pm-2am, I would not be suprised if a few locales tomorrow break out in sun after 11am, 1.17 so far

    1. Agree, and agree. Other than rain first thing tomorrow lingering in some areas, and soaking wet ground to start the day, the vast majority of the weekend will not be that bad for early June.

  8. Dry slot about to reach Long Island. Heavy rain could shot off by midnight with only scattered convection thereafter. Look for a short burst of very heavy rainfall but if shuts off. Sun should be out in the a.m. Rain totals to be on the lower end of the spectrum except for western MA and CT.

  9. Sorry Arod and OS you watch the QPF totals come in and they will be way above 2 inches. Just look at radar those bands are capable of producing easily an 1 inch in an hour time.

    1. Hadi,

It just depends upon HOW much rain falls before it shuts off.
I agree that initially, there is a pretty decent slug of water.

It will be interesting to view the final tally. You may very well be correct.

We will certainly know tomorrow. πŸ˜€

At this point, I really don’t give a crap whether it rains 2 inches or 6 inches. πŸ˜€

      Give me the BRUINS GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We’re headed out to a sports bar somewhere to watch it. It’s more like being
at the actual game that way. We did for Saturday night’s game and it was awesome.

    2. Hadi,

I am aware that some towns have already picked up an inch of rain. However, these totals are NOT as a result of Andrea. Most of the rain that has fallen thus far was as a result of a frontal boundary. The precip. shield from Andrea is just commencing and those WIDESPREAD heavy rain totals of 2-4+ inches FROM Andrea will not be realized due to the quick departure of the heavy rain overnight. Gotta love that good ol’ fashioned dry slot. If this were a winter storm, we’d all be bracing ourselves right now πŸ˜€

      1. I bet we don’t make 3 either. I’m assuming you mean today all day and tonight/morning combined. If we make 3 ill go swimming in a puddle

  10. That dry slot may get pushed a little further east not long after it gets in. There is eastward progression of the trailing precipitation back to the low center, and if you study the radar you can see eastward movement, but it’s more than just the existing echoes. Those convective showers have outflow with them. That outflow is pushing eastward into still humid air in the “dry” slot and will kick off additional development. So you will probably see the dry slot get pinched from the west with time, and we may end up with another slug of heavy rain in eastern MA after 2AM until somewhere around dawn.

      1. Trust me I’m rooting for some break after this first core goes by. My son and his classmates are on 2 buses, just beyond NYC and heading along I-95 in CT. They were due back at 11PM but I believe they departed ahead of schedule by around 90 minutes, but that along with weather will probably land that back home about 1 hour ahead of originally planned (my guess anyway). I’ll be watching Bruins but promptly using the DVR during pick-up time so I don’t miss anything. πŸ™‚

    1. I agree TK, however, that sliver of rain to the west that is destined to move eastward with time will likely weaken some. The heaviest rain occurs from now until midnight max.

      1. I do agree with that, the heaviest is certainly the next few hours. Just not sure we completely shut off for all that long.

        1. For sure. However, it appears dry air is drying to wrap into the system and the convection/precip along the western side appears to be breaking up a bit.

    1. Have you ever tried to talk to a Floridian about tropical disturbances, as soon as you say we can get a hurricane in New England they usually will interrupt stating (no no no nothing like here, by the time it gets up to you guys its dissappated) very frustrating,

      1. It may pretty much be the truth. Weve had some very destructive hurricanes but its like trying to tell a Californian we’ve had an earthquake or a resident of tornado alley we had a tornado. They live a d breathe it. On the other hand its like any of them telling is they’ve had a “blizzard”.

  11. Earliest sunrise of the season tomorrow morning at 5:07am, won’t see it though, but sunset is 8:19pm and we may see that though πŸ™‚

  12. Vicki are you going to the Museum of Science on a weekday from here? Saw your post just now on the other blog. 1.55 here.

    1. Son works right by there and is looking for an apt closer to RI where his lady friends family is. I was wondering about n Attleboro for a commute

        1. Does the MBTA run from that area? Thanks for your help. Promise this is my last question.

  13. Maybe I’m misunderstanding the conversation but 2 hrs from north Attleboro to Boston no way!! πŸ™‚ no traffic it takes 40-45 min’s and if there’s traffic who the hek knows, if there’s 1 accident it practically shuts down everything for miles, geez that’s a whole different story for a different day, are they ever gonna build another highway to relieve traffic or widen them? I mean do we think 3 lanes on 95 from Boston to Providence esp from 128 to 295 is gonna be enough in 50 yrs? again no way!! 200,000 cars drive daily on a 3 lane highway, crazy!! It’s gonna be terrible and embarrassing, anyways moving on, it’s pouring!!

    1. Don’t take this the wrong way grrr, sometimes I get so frustrated but again moving on, 1.87

  14. Well, this is just setting our region up for a very humid summer ! Lots of water to evaporate into the air.

  15. Winds coming around to SE on Cape and Islands, temps and dewpoints climbing into the low-mid 60s.

Looking closely at the radar along the south coast, almost can see more convective showers developing near and south of Long Island.

  16. 8:00 pm: Andrea labelled post tropical with sustained winds of 45 mph; 996 mb; moving along at 35 mph.

  17. Block Island has a due south wind and the temp is rising quickly. The warm, humid air is nearing then south coast and it will help keep the rain regenerating for a while.

  18. 2.08 here. .5 in the last hour. Just quieted down. Awesome to sit on the porch and watch. Ain’t weather grand πŸ™‚

    1. Yes, I have one eye on it and the other on the Bruins game, yet another great game thats unfolding.

    1. What did Pittsburgh get in 4 games, 2 goals ……. Absolutely unbelievable ! In a positive way, I am completely stunned !!

        1. Wonderful !

Does anyone know anything about the Blackhawks or the Kings ? I’m not sure I could name 3 players on either team.

  19. Both are very good teams, hawks have a great defense, very good goalie. Good puck handlers and Patrick Kane is a top 5 player even though he has been a stymied this playoffs.

  20. Tom, I am not sure how Pitt only got 2 goals in 4 games. They were a goal scoring machine all year.

    1. I am so glad this series is over. I think I’ve held my breath since they were up 2-0 because every other shift is Crosby or Malkin and I always was feeling that a quick 3 goal explosion was coming …. and thankfully, it never did !

  21. Longshor I don’t either. They were an offensive juggernaut all year. They weren’t a one team either. Bruins are a classic example of a team and how hard work pays off.

    1. I wonder what kind of odds we could have gotten in Vegas that the Penguins would only score 2 goals in the series!?

  22. Hyannis has shot up to 68F, Falmouth is now 66F. That new line of torrential downpours is the warm front and I think that will only get so far north and may provide heavy rains from Providence to Boston the next handful of hours.

  23. Congratulations to the Boston Bruins! Heading back to the finals! I know it’s not official yet but probably against Chicago. To be honest I’d rather play them than LA.

As was expected, the outflow from convection in a trailing batch undercut mild/moist air that was just waiting to be triggered, firing off all kinds of convective development on the western side of the earlier dry slot. Much of that has expanded into the area and as of 1:30AM it’s pouring buckets on a frequent basis out here. 2-4 inches already, so 3-5 totals was a decent call for those who made it. The total being for the rain in advance of the actual named system, along with the named system itself.

    Have a great weekend everyone!

    1. Thanks TK. We had a couple of lightening flashes and a soft rumble of thunder mixed in during that downpour. Was nice to listen to

  24. Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

At what wind speed does a tropical depression become a named tropical storm?
    A. 35
    B. 39
    C. 45
    D. 52

    Answer later today.

  25. For the trivia I will go with B.
Its nice to wake up to the sunshine here after 3 inches of rain yesterday. I probably won’t get much roll on the fairways when I play golf today.

  26. We probably won’t see a boatload of sunshine but it will come out at times. We may lose it later pending the strength of a trailing disturbance.

For anyone interested, Foxboro Founders Day is today with some schedule and location adjustments. The event caps off with a fireworks display tonight at 9PM. I’ll be there for the fireworks. πŸ™‚

I honestly don’t mind days like this in June even though of course I prefer a nice summery day. This morning / early afternoon is the type of day I like to take advantage of to get stuff done that I would not be in the mood to do on a day I’d rather be at the beach. πŸ™‚

Don’t forget, Belmont Stakes today for you horse racing fans. Though we’re not rooting for a triple crown winner this year. Starting to wonder if that will ever happen again. Can’t say I’m a huge fan of the sport, but I do watch the 3 big races and the Breeders Cup in the Autumn.

    1. Thanks TK. I feel the same about horse racing but we also watch the big three. I don’t mind today’s weather either. Kind of a nice feel

  27. CONGRATULATION BRUINS!!

Went out to a sports bar last evening to watch the game. Picked one we could get to, find parking and hopefully find a seat or 2. Picked Canton Junction Sports Pub, well, in Canton. It was nice, we had seats, a few drinks a little something to eat and a most enjoyable hockey game, EXCEPT for the 10 minutes or so their satellite TV went down! We almost went home, but it came back on. It was raining Sooooo hard, I thought the place was going to float away. πŸ˜€

  28. Well, I suppose the next local weather question becomes …. How much rain happens early to middle of next week and more importantly, how much rain can the streams and rivers take before flooding becomes an issue ?

  29. Beautiful out today, at Patriot Place at Gillette which is packed geeez, anyways eating at CBS Scene then HOF then Bass Pro shop

  30. Trivia quiz answer is B…yet another easy one. πŸ™‚

With showery conditions for early-midweek and clearing not until next Friday, I am hoping for a lovely weekend come next Saturday & Sunday.

  31. Eating my crow today. Dry slot certainly filled in and Hadi’s numbers verified. Nice forecast Hadi! Enjoy the day everyone:)

    1. Most people I’ve seen here in all the years I’ve been coming here, saw a few Patriots at the Dana Farber dome (Ridley) etc etc they r mobbed with people trying to get autographes, yes I waited 2hrs and 20 min’s to get it πŸ™‚

  32. Last night the rain was exciting, the Bruins were exciting, and TK and I both saw blue/grey heron at the edge of a lake in the rain πŸ™‚ We saw it take flight, which Native Americans believe is good luck πŸ˜€

    1. Emily I love the heron. We see them in the marshes at the beach. I didnt know it was good luck to see them take flight. Thanks

    2. It was awesome, and only saw it because we had watched the hockey game at our friend’s house and had to take a small detour around a street-flooded part of our normal route, taking me by the pond, which is where I spotted the bird. It stood out when my headlights shined on it, so I stopped to grab a photo after which it took off.

  33. Following the Bruins’ sweep against the Penguins, B’s forward David Krejci once again emphasized the importance of his team’s togetherness.

β€œWe don’t have the superstars on this team. We don’t have the best player in the world. But we might have the best team in the world,” said Krejci. β€œWe play as a team.”

That sums it up pretty well!

    1. I wish I cared about hockey I really do, there’s only a few selected cities in America that even care about hockey, ESPN refuses to even mention hockey ever except Olympic hockey, as you know I love football. I’m glad they won for you, who r they playing now? America is a football 1st country, it’s a ratings MONSTER, plus when You win a Vince Lombardy trophy the entire world knows about it, when you win a cup it’s a very localized clientele and mainly the 2 cities competting are the only cities interested, no disrespect to you or any hockey fans, also when I lived in Dallas Florida and the Midwest ,,hockey was a 5th sport behind NASCAR, and in some parts of America it doesn’t even matter πŸ™‚ Go Patriots Go Bruins πŸ™‚

    2. Sounds like the Patriots in 01 Superbowl when they ran and were introduced onto the field as a team, that’s great!!

    3. I know little about hockey but what I do know about the bruins is they give back more than any other Boston team. Impressive.

  34. Charlie,

It is true about Hockey. Really only popular in the Northern states from North Dakota to Minnesota to New England and including New York, Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin.

    πŸ˜€

If the Briuns win, they will play either Chicago or LA, but most likely Chicago. πŸ˜€

    1. I agree that the Bruins will play Chicago. The Kings needed to win that game at home the other night. It will be tough to beat Chicago 3 straight. The Kings have yet to win a game on the road in this series.

  35. Actually Charlie hockey is very popular on an international level. Way more than football. They bring the Stanley cup all over Europe.

Football is king in this country but only here.

  36. Don’t forget Canada hadi, believe it or not more Canadians watch the superbowl than Stanley cup

    1. Agree. All I was trying to point out is that the Stanley cup is brought all over Europe and thousands of people turn out to see it.

    2. I disagree. Canadians live and breathe hockey. If Chicago wins tonight it will be the first time since 1979 that there was a final with original six franchise teams.

      1. I would have bet you were right John but did a quick google search and it seems it may be the suoerbowl. That truly surprised me

        1. I was thinking he meant in canada. Because in Canada hockey is life, its everything over there and thats why they produce such phenomenal hockey players. I would like to go there some time. There is a place in Ontario called the frozen pond all autograph stuff from anybody who ever played the game. I’m not sure how many people realize how big an original six matchup for the cup would be, bigtime big. Go Chicago.

          1. Sorry I wasn’t clear. I was talking about Canada and it seems the Super Bowl surpasses hockey

I have only been to Canada a handful of times. I fished the Miramichi in Blackville New Brunswick and travelled through Nova Scotia. Both breathtakingly beautiful areas. I’d like to go back to Nova Scotia and would really like to see British Columbia

            1. I believe your saying the superbowl is bigger than the Stanley cup and I would agree. The superbowl is the most watched event out of any sport. Black hawks up 2-0. This series ends tonight. How’s the baby and you.

  37. Final disturbance moving through now but only a few sprinkles/light showers, except slightly heavier showers crossing the Islands and maybe scraping the Cape. After that we can say goodbye other than some lingering breezes as the clouds start to depart tonight.

  38. Answer to today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

At what wind speed does a tropical depression become a named tropical storm?
    A. 35
    B. 39
    C. 45
    D. 52

The answer is B. I think everyone got it. Congrats.

  39. No John it’s a fact more Canadians watch the superbowl than the Stanley cup, even more than the grey cup in Canada whatever that is but just saying, beautiful night πŸ™‚

    1. Granted there prolly watching it for the commercials but nevertheless, have a good night John, it is nice to see you back on woodshill weather πŸ™‚

  40. TK, thoughts on rainfall totals early next week. Getting nervous about the basement with the rain we just had and more on top of that right away.

    1. Potential for 1 inch plus on Tuesday.

We have made up a whole lot of ground recently.

  41. Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

Which absorbs and radiates the Sun’s energy at a slower rate?
    A. Snow
    B. Forest
    C. Water
    D. Sand

    Answer later today.

      1. Cancel that. I’m going with B

Sorry clearly I can’t decide but that’s my final answer πŸ˜€

  42. We have a decent amount of rain on the way Mon/Tue, rain we really don’t need but its very possible to have ABOVE average rainfall for the year as we go into mid June πŸ™‚

  43. The red thread disease everyone’s seeing in there lawns is from all the rain and humidity, a high nitrogen fertilizer will help the problem and a little help from the weather. Don’t waste your money on fungicides. Also no need to water for this upcoming week obviously,, but you’d be suprised πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks Charlie. We don’t have it since our lawns were starting to show stress from lack of water but ill sure watch for it. Iirc we all had it this time 2011

  44. TK if I’m not mistaken we started the year on average with about a 4 inch deficit. Even if we are average for the year does that still calculate to below average until we make up that deficit ? I was just out shoring up my snapdragons that took a beating fri night and was surprised the top level is already drying.

    1. The previous deficit is still there, yes. But if we are getting beneficial rain on a more frequent basis it’s not as big a deal in the short term.

      1. Thanks Vicki…hard to believe that snow fell just a few months ago when you look at the landscape now compared to then. πŸ™‚

        1. I know. As much as I tried to enjoy it, I feel as if there is never enough time to do so. Except on the coast. I do wish it could have been without that destruction.

  45. Why do people that live in Tx or Cali or Arizona never have water bans for watering and can water as much as they want and here they have water bans all the time? I have a friend that lives in Arizona and says it hasn’t rained for a month yet everyone in the neighborhood waters everyday, should Massachusetts be trying to find ways to have more water in reserve so people can water when they want without inconvenience?

    1. I’m from California. We had watering bans often, and when we didn’t, we were always on a schedule of when we could or couldn’t water, so, not sure what you’re referring to.

      1. DS. You are of course correxf. Not only does CA have water bans, they have bans on how often you can flush the toilet. This happens from la to San Francisco to San Diego.

  46. Answer to Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

Which absorbs and radiates the Sun’s energy at a slower rate?
    A. Snow
    B. Forest
    C. Water
    D. Sand

    The correct answer is C.

  47. anyone interested in knowing that the World Cup and the Olympics are the most sporting events in the world.

  48. Updated…

I’d have guessed both of those events. Worldwide interest is big time.
