Summer Delayed

11:30PM

We had the heat preview, and now we’ve slipped into a cool and wet pattern that will continue for a little while longer. Complex low pressure moving eastward across the northeastern US will continue to create unsettled conditions into the middle of the week. The heaviest rain will have gone by most of the region by Tuesday morning, but another round of showers and embedded thunder will track west to east across the region late in the day into the night. Clouds will dominate Wednesday as low pressure will be slow to depart. A lingering trough will set off a coastal low that may come close enough to bring another round of rain to at least southern and eastern areas Thursday night into Friday. As this departs, the coming weekend may start cool and breezy but should end a little warmer. There is no heat in sight at this time.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England…

OVERNIGHT: Rain, some heavy. Slight chance of thunderstorms. Lows 54-59. Wind E 10-20 MPH.

TUESDAY: Cloudy with patchy fog to start as rain and embedded downpours end southwest to northeast. Spotty drizzle north of the Mass Pike where clouds hang on into afternoon. Partial sun possible south of the Pike. Heavier clouds from the west toward the end of the day with an area of showers/thunderstorms, most potent to the south. Highs in the 60s except 70-75 some interior areas south of the Mass Pike. Wind variable, mainly E to N 5-15 MPH in areas north of the Mass Pike, variable to S 5-15 MPH to the south.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Showers likely in the evening, tapering off overnight. Patchy fog. Lows in the 50s. Wind variable to N 5-10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Isolated showers. Highs around 70. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Clouding over. Late rain. Low 56. High 72.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy. Morning rain. Low 57. High 68.

SATURDAY: Sun & clouds, breezy. Low 55. High 65.

SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 55. High 75.

MONDAY: Variably cloudy. Low 58. High 77.

    1. Thanks Tom. I also think of this as being quite average for this time of year.

Thanks also for the update TK!

  2. Thanks TK.
As I said last night any thunderstorms will be non severe. However even though they won’t be severe any that develop have the potential to produce heavy rain and vivid lightning.

  3. Looking wet through Thurs and cool for a couple of days after. Not very summery at all. Hoping it warms up a little.

On another note, nothing happening in the tropics. Water is warm, but upper level winds are strong. Generally things look unfavorable (as they do much of the time) for any development.

    1. We got 1.12 here, hope we don’t get more tonight. Basement still ok for now, but have no town water!

  4. Another Crap Day. So what else is new? Weather really stinks around here.
I absolutely HATE this kind of weather. Hate it.

    Where’s the Sun?

Only one good thing I can say about this week….The Bruins play tomorrow night!
    😀

  5. At this time of year, it’s hard for the sun not to come out. No sun in Sudbury now but it is getting somewhat brighter. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some sun around here around Noon or shortly thereafter.

  6. Sun is starting to poke through a little now. As I always say on days when a cold front is approaching this is self destructing sunshine which further destablizes the atmosphere.

  7. Still quite cloudy in Plymouth. I figure it may as well be crappy until the kids get out of school. At least my son isn’t roasting on the 2nd floor of his ancient school.

  8. It appears there’s a never ending chance of rain for the next 7-10 days, we don’t really need any additional rain as far as I’m concerned now that we r above average for the year by almost a half inch of rain, good day all 🙂

  9. A weak ridge moves in for the weekend supplying us with fair weather; however, more troughy weather moves in next week. Before we know it, it will be July before summer finally arrives. So much for a dry June.

  10. I am still finding the Tebow thing kind of nutty today. Certainly it doesn’t hurt the team financially, but it does’t figure to give the Pats anything they need either. Tight end? He is being paid the minimum veteran salary with no guarantees though there are probably some incentives. Even after minicamp, not sure he’ll be there for training. Bizarre.

  11. This Tebow thing and media circus that comes with him is a joke. He is not a good NFL QB. The reason he led Denver to that playoff victory over Pittsburgh was because Pittsburgh had a lot of injuries.

  12. Charlie how about some analysis on why you think Tebow is a good thing? All I read is Go Patriots.

  13. This Thursday night/Friday storm may be quite an intense hitter. Down to 993 mb on the 12Z EURO, continuing its trend of tracking closer. Looks like a direct hit for rain and wind.

Both EURO and GFS showing warmer times ahead in the extended, with perhaps a very hot day by June 22nd ???

  14. Cyclonic flow aloft through Saturday. That’s a trough, and it’s a cool and unsettled pattern in this particular setup. May hang in the 60s in most areas most of the day Saturday along with a gusty breeze. Actually a great day for outside cleanup projects which I will be doing in advance of the heart of early to mid summer during which I don’t have much interest in outside “projects” unless they are fun, other than mowing the lawn when it’s needed. 😉

    1. Thanks TK – Is Sunday still looking good?? We have a 6 year old birthday party with one of those bouncy houses and if it’s going to be windy at all my daughter didn’t think she’d order it

      1. Looks good so far. Weak high pressure but enough for a seasonable, fair day. Not too cool but no heat either.

  15. Amazing – heavy rain about 1/2 or so away and finally the sun comes out. Sky is mainly overcast but still the sky looks kind of pretty in a weird way.

      1. Same here, sun just popped out and yet there seems to be heavy showers popping up on the radar just southwest of Marshfield.

        1. Sunshine was very brief. Now just waiting for the rain. Almost on our doorstep according to doppler radar.

  16. Hadi, 1st I would like to say Tebow is really a class act, 2nd we can cut him at anytime, 3rd if you think there’s gonna be a circus down at Gillette then you don’t know the Patriots organization and ill sell ya the tobin bridge for 20 bucks, will see what happens, did you see the press conference? I thought BB was great, the Patriots are Polarizing here in America, it’s Chinas and Europes favorite nfl team. Forbes 2013 has the Patriots worth 2B just behind dallas. I’m actually not sure what they see in Tebow but he’s an athlete, this team has tooken other teams so called junk and the Patriots have turned them into something, there is no negative to this, there will be no circus, enjoy the storms, good day all 🙂

      1. Charlie he has the talent to do whatever we want for no money. If anyone can develop him, BB and Brady can. If they cannot, nothing is lost. It is a no brainer. I simply don’t get the problem

  17. What a difference an hour makes where I am from heavy downpours to now having wall to wall sunshine.

  18. A few thoughts on how the Pats could use Tebow…these are just my thoughts and not a reflection on if I think this is a good signing or not.
    1. He could end up being the holder on FG’s and PA’s (some options there)
    2. He could end up being out there when the Pats are punting
    3. He could end up being a contributor at other times on special teams
    4. Maybe being used as backup TE or HB (although I see this as less of an option than others do but that’s just my personal opinion and I could be all wet)
    5. Continue to be tutored in the art of being of good QB and see what happens 3-5 years down the line…remember Steve Young didn’t take over for Montana until he was 30 (and for a time while with Tampa Bay Steve Young was considered a bust)

Just some thoughts….your mileage may vary 🙂

    1. Well thought out. There really are many options for very little money. It’ll be fun to follow and if he doesn’t make it there’s nothing lost. He’s a hard worker and I for one love to see him given the opportunity.

    1. I knew this morning it was only a matter of time when the water was rising in the sump pump hole at a quick pace. Tonight’s rain didn’t help either.

TK any chance Thursday nights rain misses?

      1. I hope you havent had a lot of experience with this in the past, but you may want to use tomorrow to consider how to offset more water in a few days as the trend for Thurs night’s storm has been closer and increased amts of rain.

            1. Not too bad. If it was just this it wouldn’t be too bad. Adding another couple of inches Thursday and I won’t be the only one doing this!

  19. Wow!! Picked up another .87 which puts me at 2.65 above average for the year, not sure if Boston is that much above average but it must be at least an inch above average

    1. Wait until midday Friday after the next soaker Thursday night into Friday.

I think Boston is +3 for the month and close to avg for the year.

      1. No kidding I think another widespread 1-2 inches of rain for Friday, I’m a little concerned for flooding bc these rivers don’t peak till tomorrow then more rain, not good

  20. So much for a drought this summer geez, could be 3-5+ inches above average for the year in the rainfall dept by the end of the week

  21. The storm system coming for the Thursday Friday timeframe looks to take the a track we see with alberta clippers in the winter. At least we won’t have to worry about severe weather being on the cooler stable side of the storm.

  22. So far this June is the 13th wettest on record and it’s only the 11th of the month. Could easily enter the top 5 wettest Junes.

  23. Tebow: i’ve said this a couple of times on other blogs. There is no real downside, but I can’t figure the upside. At best a limited role for a few years and that’s if he makes through training.

  24. UGH is right Longshot. I am trying to search for a silver lining in this next storm system and the only one I could find is we won’t have to deal with severe weather like the Mid Atlantic will see. With that said heavy rain and flooding are looking more and more likely with this system as its taking a track we see during the winter.

    1. perhaps the silver lining is, in terms of temperature, its departure on Friday may be the pattern changer that ends highs in the 50s and 60s for a long time to come.

  25. On a purely selfish note, this weather is great for the last several days of school. The building is not hot, the students aren’t looking outside thinking where they could be (Ok, maybe they still are, but at least not outside. 🙂 )

Today would have been our last day of school, however, we lost 2 days to Sandy in October, 5 to Nemo in February and 1 in March due to those late season snowfalls and thus we continue onward until Monday, June 24th.

    1. Good points, Tom. For some reason FRmingham ends on the 25th and I thought we had fewer storm days. Now that I think of it, I am surprised since that is also the special election date.

      1. That was my thought also Tom as my son’s school in Plymouth is so old and gets so hot. His last day is the 26th since they started after Labor Day. However, he is enroute to the New England Acquarium today for his field trip and was just a tad excited this morning. 🙂

  26. Please turn the faucet off. I don’t want to spend the rest of the week in the basement. I think I managed two hours of sleep last night! Hoping the next storm trends south since it is acting like a winter storm :).

  27. North I am with you on that one. The ground is very saturated and can’t take any more rain at this point. If we get any wind gusts with the saturated ground there could some power issues to go along with the heavy rain and flooding potential.

      1. The way the low is forecasted to track it looks to take the track of an Alberta Clipper going south of Long Island and
heading east from there. With that track were on the cool stable side of the storm. South of the low track is where the
moist unstable air is. I think were going to see a lot of severe weather reports from this storm system.

  28. I noticed the 6z NAM didn’t show it slowing down as much as previous runs. Waiting for the 12z to complete now.

Have a waterproofing company coming this afternoon for an estimate.

    1. I had somthing done to my basement and it worked. they drilled a hole I believe from the outside and than on the inside they installed some sort of rubber strip. It worked and no water since it was done four years now.

      1. Good to know John thanks. It is not fun to constantly worry about it. I had water in March 2010 and now, but the precious owners that lived here 50 years did not. I don’t think. Believe that statement anymore…..

        1. The previous owner of my house knew I was doing the basement over. She said no water down there ever. Not even a week there on the first rain storm it leaked, I took her to court and won my case. When they drilled they also injected the hole with something. It’s guaranteed for life. So it was an injection than a rubber strip barrior inside where the water was coming from. Of course the key is to find the leak. I wish I could try to remember the product. Mention this to the contractor. Also make sure the guy your using is repeatable.

          1. Thanks John. It actually comes up through the floor. I gave ValueDry a call ans they local offices, so I am hoping they are good. I have to check reviews and the BBB.

  29. Things not good in Colorado. No let up for fire fighters. Scorcher today and 15-20 mph winds with gusts to 30. They need a break.

      1. Hmmm….I dont think anyone here reports anything that is not fact. No one said drought….the term abnormally dry was used. Now if anyone said we were not abnormally dry when we were, that would have been silly…..eh?

  30. The Potential Flooding and the heavy rain threat are the big tickets items here. However as I said earlier with the saturated ground and winds that could gusts there could be some power issues.

  31. Another good 2-4+ inches with isolated 5″ amounts seems like late Thursday thru Friday. This is a slow moving storm system with gusty winds and a moderate to high flood potential. Unfortunately, there is no end in sight when it comes to rain over the next 10 days; however, a nice weekend awaits before the next period of unsettled weather returns Monday-Wednesday of next week.

      1. Gfs 12z run take a run at us late tomorrow and then heads southeast to VA coast and then out to see. Still some rain bu weird track. Has Boston more near the Euro totals at 60 hours.

        1. How’s your basement? My friend who had flooding for the first time back in 2010 is watching his basement nervously. Nothing so far but after Friday that could easily change.

          1. It is ok right now. I slept in 45 min intervals about 3 times last night. Had t keep the wet dry vac going. I also have a sump pump outside my basement door helping the one I have in the hole inside. I hate the anxiety that goes along with it! Have a company coming out this afternoon, so they can see exactly what is going on. Hoping it is not a huge amount to fix it! It looks to be receding back a little bit. So far. Have been able t keep pace, but am worried about tomorrow. The funny thing is we just spent the last two weekends cleaning e basement out, so there is a lot less in there. Just dying to keep it away from my finished part, which is raised up slightly.

I think many will have issues if we get the amounts that were being floated around for tomorrow night.

            1. Boy that is tough. I’m sorry to hear that. I know how stressful it is when it comes from above……I will keep positive thoughts for you to find an easy solution

              1. Thanks Vicki. I probably shouldn’t let it drive me crazy, but I do since the water heater and furnace are down there!

  32. watch with my luck the nice summer weather is going to come back when i start working. on june 20th.

  33. I just saw the SPC upgraded Chicago area to a high risk for severe weather. According a tweet I just read from meteorologist Jaci Jarus from WJLA in D.C. the last time Chicago was placed under a high risk was May 30, 2004.

    1. Wow – I didn’t realize Chicago didn’t have many severe threats. I heard someone on TV say this morning that the high risk was up to CT?? But it’s been a crazy day so I could have heard incorrectly.

      1. Hi Vicki…. They get severe weather but when an area is placed under a high risk for severe weather by the storm
prediction center there is a POTENTIAL for a serious weather situation.
The three categories for severe weather from the storm prediction center are slight, moderate, and high.

          1. Your welcome Vicki. Just west of Chicago a tornado watch being classified as particularly dangerous
situation. This storm system your going to be hearing a lot about in the news. Tomorrow the Mid Atlantic
gets the severe weather tomorrow while were dealing with the cool side of the storm with heavy rain and
            the potential for flooding.

    1. What kind of phone system OS? We are looking at replacing our PBX next year and have started our due diligence.

      1. Comcast Business Voice Edge.

It is a cloud based system utilizing Comcast Cable
        for the connection.

Saves maintenance/replacement costs of legacy PBX systems.
It uses IP phones and POE switches, so the wiring needs to be in place.

If an office needs to use “hoteling” or “Hot desking” this system
        is perfect for it.

        We “hope” it works well.

My problem was that we have a “temporary” satellite office
that had to be integrated into the new system. Translation,
I had to FUDGE it in, by programming the satellite office
phone system with short codes etc. Pain in the butt, but I got it all done and we’re ready to roll.

        Good Luck with your search.

We cutover on Monday (it is a HOLIDAY for our office, Bunker Hill Day).

So, please feel free to check in with me later and I can tell
you how well it is working or not. 😀

This product offering is new for Comcast and we’ll be one
of the largest customers to date. We shall see.

        1. Interesting OS! We are looking at the Verizon hosted service but hadn’t even considered Comcast. We have an Avaya CM right now but we are at a software version that will no longer be supported. We need to either upgrade or move on.

One of my favorite things to do is FUDGE things in the phone system. Somehow I feel like I beat it somehow. I consider myself the Queen of Work Arounds!

Good luck this weekend…hope it goes well.

          1. Actually, you “may” be better off with
Verizon as they would make the connection
with Fiber (FIOS I presume). We didn’t look
at Verizon because they DON’T have fiber here
and they won’t/can’t put it in here. (Translation: It would cost them too much money!) 😀

            1. Thanks OS…I actually love my Avaya CM but it is definitely costly. We use an IP Office for our conference bridge. It is a nice little system. We have over 80 offices to connect so it gets a bit tricky.

  34. What a day.

Many road closings and traffic jammed due to the President’s visit to the Reggie Lewis Center at Roxbury Community College, a mere stone’s throw away from my office.

My boss actually attended and had an opportunity to meet the President.
So close, yet so far for me. 😀 Wish I could have attended.

  35. North,

I hope that your water problems get resolved.

I have a very negative recommendation. We had some work done by Basement Technologies. It was a terrible comedy of errors. If I had not been home for the first major soaking after their installation, I believe that our foundation, which has stood since 1738, would have been destroyed. This would have brought down a good chunk of the house.

    1. What a horror story for you. You have comfort that they fixed the problem only to have something see to go wrong right away.

I will stay away from that company.

    1. Hadi,

yes, I saw that. Euro suppresses system to the SOUTH of us.

I am ROOTING for the EURO.

      😀

  36. Look at the low in Canada on the 12Z EURO seems to suppress the upcoming storm should it hold.

  37. EURO text output for KBOS

  38. BTW, before I forget:

    GO BRUINS!!!

I plan on enjoying this game, regardless of the outcome, but I sincerely
hope our boys are up to the task.

    1. It is the Euro and GFS against the other models. The 6z GFS follows the 12Z and takes a track more to the south like the Euro.

  39. Hey North. Is the company you had over today out of Framingham. I hope you don’t mind but I did some . I see they offer a lifetime warranty and 0% finance, that’s good. Bbb has three complaints on file all closed. Advertising and product was the complaint.

    1. John, That was nice of you to do some research.

North, I just saw your comment above. If water damages your furnace, etc you are responsible ??

    2. Thanks John, that was nice of you to look them up. Yes, that is them. This guy that came out was great and spent 2 hours here. It is an arm and a leg though, but will be worth it if I can get it done. He will take out the concrete around the perimeter of the two main parts of the basement and put in French drain type pipe with rocks surrounding it and then put concrete back on top. Those pipes will go around the perimeter connected and empty into a new deep sump pump. The only downfall is they have to remove part of the bottom of the wall in my finished part and I have to get the heat moved on one wall. They would elevate m,e on their list since I have water now.

      1. That’s what my SIL the plumber said you have to do. I believe his parents did the same thing. And he said it is horribly expensive but it solves their problem

        1. Thanks Vicki. Getting over the sticker shock tonight but leaning towards doing it. I will sleep better at night knowing that is in place during a rainstorm and they replace the pump for free within 8 hours forever.

  40. All I can say is we were overdue for a lot of rain. Haven’t had a period like this in ages. This said, enough is enough. Feels like we live in Burma (monsoons) without the heat.

    Go Bruins!

  41. There are many bright sides here…

It’s not really truly the heart of summer. Take the cool/wet now. We’ve erased the majority of the precipitation deficit and flooding has been minimal. This will not be a repeat of 2009. There is a decent chance we turn things around right about the time of the solstice.

Euro is starting to consistently hint at building ridges in the southern US and off the East Coast and a retrograding and weakening trough from eastern into central Canada.
