Some Good With The Bad

10:27PM

Yes another storm is coming on the heels of the one just departing. Before we get to the details, I’m hoping that some of you got to enjoy the picturesque sky today which included some sun and many passing clouds, some with greatΒ  texture, scattered showers, and evening rainbows. The next wave of low pressure will pass south of New England early Friday, sending a shield of rain into southern New England which will arrive during Thursday. The track of this low will be far enough south and development just slow enough to spare the region of the heaviest rain potential. Who would have thought just a few weeks back that we’d be wanting rain to miss us, as we were in a significant rainfall deficit in much of the region. Mother Nature can turn things around in a hurry, and has, giving us a cool/wet pattern so far in June. So despite some bad weather, it will be a better scenario than what may have been. In either case, by later Friday it will be drying out and this will lead to a weekend that will be pretty spectacular, at least for most of it, as high pressure builds in. The next weather system will be approaching from the west by the very end of the weekend, but the majority of Father’s Day should be nice before clouds roll in and lead to a shower threat at night and into the first of next week.

As far as the specifics from the Thursday PM to Friday AM storm:

Rain… 1 to 2 inches, heaviest south of the Mass Pike. Local flooding but it should not be too severe.

Wind… East to northeast winds 10-20 MPH with gusts around 30 MPH will become common Thursday night into Friday before shifting more to the north and eventually diminishing. Top wind gusts of 40 MPH or greater will occur mainly over Cape Cod in the Islands.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England…

OVERNIGHT: Clearing. Lows ranging from near 50 in outlying areas well northwest of Boston to the upper 50s in urban centers. Wind NW diminishing to under 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Clouding over rapidly in the morning. Rain developing from west to east during the afternoon. Highs in the 60s to near 70. Wind variable becoming SE up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Overcast with rain, may be heavy for a time especially southern MA and RI. Lows 50-55. Wind E to NE 10-20 MPH gusting to 30 MPH or greater especially in coastal areas and higher elevations. Some 40 MPH gusts are possible over Cape Cod and the Islands.

FRIDAY: Overcast morning with rain ending west to east. Mostly cloudy afternoon with isolated sprinkles or light showers. Highs in the 60s. Wind NE to N 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.

SATURDAY: Partly cloudy AM. Sunny PM. Low 51. High 73.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny AM. Clouds arriving PM. Low 56. High 78.

MONDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Low 61. High 79.

TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Low 64. High 79.

WEDNESDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 63. High 80.

  1. Thanks TK!

Do you have a forecast for the Bruins in overtime? πŸ˜‰ Do you see any “rain” on the ice? haha I have no idea what I meant by that….bad joke….or attempt at one πŸ˜›

I got great pictures of the sky today…love that! LOVED the rainbow too!

    1. I have a forecast. The final score of the game will be 4-3. πŸ˜›

I’d like to see the rain of the hats of the few Bruins fans there after Lucic scores the OT winner and gets a hat trick in the process. πŸ˜‰

But at this point I don’t care who scores as long as they are wearing a Bruins jersey.

  2. I learned that inside the Chicago rink the air temp starts at 60-65 degrees and goes up about 5 degrees when the stands are full.

    1. Into the 3rd OT! I’ll never survive the playoffs. One thing for sure — the 2 teams that are playing for the Cup deserve to be there.

      1. No offense but as a nation, the Voice got a higher tv rating at 4.1 than game 1 ofStanley cup playoffs at 3.6, very crazy stuff but very interesting πŸ™‚

        1. You have explained your lack of interest in hockey several times. We get it.

If you are not a hockey fan or even Boston or Chicago hockey fan, why would you bother watching Game 1 of what will be a 6-7 game series? If the Voice, on a national basis, didn’t outdraw a hockey game, I would say the Voice would be in very serious trouble.

I am sure you took the time to get the Voice ratings vs the game ratings in the cities of Chicago and Boston. Could you please share those numbers with us too?

          1. Had to be in early today so missed some of the game. All the Bruins need to do on this road trip is split. You don’t want to come home two games in the hole. I think they will be fine.

          2. Huh? I didn’t watch and that hockey game last night on a national level was the 5th most watched event being watched last night, I don’t care what the ratings are on a local level, I root for the bruins but just not invested, good day long shot πŸ™‚

          3. I don’t mean to be offensive longshot, I didn’t watch but am always interested in tv ratings on a national level, if the city that’s involved in the Stanley cup doesn’t have the highest ratings on a local level then hockey is in trouble here, these ratings tell me that locally sure hockey is fine but on a national level it’s struggling bad, again no offense intended longshot and go bruins!!

            1. Just about everybody I knew was still up when that game ended. πŸ˜‰

I’m with my team to the end, win or lose. It was a great game. After getting into the 3rd OT it’s a shame one of those teams had to lose.

            2. Charlie I am not a hockey fan and know a good amount of others who are not. I watched the game and they all watched as well. If the regular fans are watching and the regular non-fans are watching, I’d say the bruins have nothing to worry about.

As an aside, even not being a hockey fan, I am well aware that the Bruins give far more back to the community than any of our other teams – pats included. Again, I don’t see hockey ever being threatened in Boston.

  3. Thanks TK !

In hindsight, I am glad I fell asleep last night, but am preparing Saturday night to stay up as late as needed. πŸ™‚

Impressive compact system headed this way.

I guess in the warm season, the models cant figure out track of these noreasters then either, as they seem to have zagged back northward overnight.

Impressive warm sector with this storm, as I think I saw that Cincinnati was 80F at 5am this morning.

  4. re: Bruins

TOO many blown opportunities, PLUS, they changed their style of play to
Protect the lead” when they took the 3-1 lead in the 3rd period which allowed Chicago back in the game.

We’re COOKED if Horton is out.

KEEP the Rain to the South of here!!!

    1. GREAT point about playing to protect their lead in the 3rd period. I was yelling at the tv for them to keep pouring it on and stick the nail in the coffin! But they just sat back and watched. Uggghh

    2. I think they will be fine Oldsalty. They did have a solid game and rask again did have a huge night. Saturday is not an absolute must win game, but they need to win and want to come home 1-1. You know what I mean right. I think it will be a long series and long games. Do you think it will be raining in Boston by 3:00. It was sunny out now all cloudy.

      1. John, Hope you are correct.

I am really concerned about Horton being out.
They were REALLY playing SHORT last night
without him and the fatigue factor was large.

If Horton can’t go, we lose the series, no doubt.

IF he’s OK and we can grab Saturday’s game, we’ll be in good shape.

I thought it was interesting that the announcers last night
said that if these 2 teams played 100 times, they’d each
win 50. I’d say that was a declaration that the teams are
        even.

        πŸ˜€

        1. its funny you just said that on the 50/50, my buddy and I were just talking about that. My buddy thinks Horton may have a separated shoulder and should dress Hamilton. Krug made some bigtime mistakes last night and heard it from Claude. The Bruins did not stink lastnight and should be more than ready for Saturday.marshon needs to smarten up, play a little cleaner. I think they split. If not still not a series ender. They started the Vancouver series down two games and won the cup, although we would rather have the win.

  5. Whatever is about to hit Philly to DC looks aboslutely vicious.

Always a not smart thing to do, but I’m going to do it anyway :), if we were to just translate the current precip eastward, it sure looks like the area is going to get an enormous amount of rain, as in 2 to 3 inches. Perhaps the NAM is correct …… it was pretty good with the QPF in these type of storms during the cold season.

    1. Due to some dry air the system is running into, most of the leading edge of precip isn’t reaching the ground and won’t make it in here till after noontime. This won’t be as impressive as some think.

  6. What a letdown. After Bergeron’s goal to make it 3-1, the B’s played like the Penguins in Games 3 and 4. Not taking advantage of chances. Often dominating play, but not finishing. That’s worrisome, especially with Horton out. The Bruins have been scoring well throughout the playoffs, but we all know they can go through stretches of scoring droughts.

Speaking of drought, I guess it’s over. My goodness, a full-fledged nor’easter looks to be shaping up, just southeast of the benchmark. Have we (Woodshill gang) put a buoy at the spot of the benchmark yet? I think that some day we should rent a boat and head to the benchmark.

    1. This nor’easter will not be as impressive as many think. An inch or two of rain south of the pike. The system is running into dry air and is under the influence of the low up in Canada and thus will be suppressed to the south.

      1. I’m OK with that. I live in a basement condominium (euphemistically known as “garden level” – should be renamed “rat, mole, and shrew level”). So far, no damage, but these monsoon-like rains have tested our flood protection system.

      2. One thing I will say is that the sky is unusual for June 13th. It almost looks like a snow sky. Of course it won’t snow, but the sky reminds me of February, certainly not June!

  7. Our tight compact storm looks to be racing east southeast and should be outta here tomorrow a.m. Huge dry slot behind it.

  8. I am football fan first and foremost, but Charlie I can assure you nothing matches the intensity of Cup finals. No NBA or NFL playoff game can rival the riveting action on a hockey rink in the playoffs. Who cares what the rating is nationally, it’s a great game and great run for the B’s.

00z EURO still only showing .93 QPF for KBOS

    1. I agree to disagree bc 3hrs prior to regular season games I have radio tv pre game on and then the pacing back and forth on both sides of the ball in my living room at kickoff, I can’t even eat during the game, and then 3hrs of postgame interviews. I’m so invested into the Patriots ill tape the game and watch it again to see things in better detail, so for me there’s nothing more exciting than the game of football, it’s great, playoffs and superbowl r off the charts with anxiety but that’s me, good day!! πŸ™‚

      1. Don’t disagree that Football is beyond awesome, I am fanatic but I have no doubt in my mind that Hockey is a different beast. Very few time outs, little or no TV commercials, non stop intensity, I can go on an on on why Hockey is the most intense playoff sport in the world.

  9. An inch or two is pretty impressive Arod πŸ™‚ remember in the winter with a 10-1 ratio we would be talking 10-20 inches and I think that would be impressive !!

  10. Don’t underestimate the loss of Campbell on the power play unit. Could be a big issue so far it has not.

    1. Agree, and also agree on your post on hockey. Nothing beats the intensity and sheer guts and determination of the sport of hockey. It’s truly a test of endurance, skill, power, strategy. Everything we love in a sport, in my opinion, without some of the baggage we get in other sports (super inflated ego’s, whining, constant breaks in the action, repetitive and almost excruciating commercial cycles on TV). Don’t get me wrong, I’m a sports fanatic and love football, baseball, basketball, soccer, and hockey. But I do think the latter fits the definition of sport and athleticism the most.

    1. We don’t even get a thunderstorm.

I just returned from my colonoscopy which was to determine if I’d need surgery – that’s been in play for a couple of years now – and the great news is I do not need surgery. I would LOVE a nice thunderstorm to cap the celebration. πŸ˜€

PS if I’ve been grumpy this week I apologize. I’ve been on edge worrying what the decision would be !!

        1. Hehehe. The best part is having anything you want to eat afterwards and then nice deep sleep πŸ™‚

  11. So when do we think this thing will clear out? I have an outdoor event tonight at 6:30….I’m guessing probably not by then?

    1. I noticed that, too. You were right to call it a disorganized system this morning when I was calling it a “full-fledged nor’easter.” Good to know I’m not forecasting.

      1. Don’t get me wrong. That deformation zone in northern MA moves southward early this evening and as a storm gets going to our south tonight, rain fills back in, but rainfall won’t be excessive.

  12. Radar echos filling in now. Rain should begin again in south-centeral and south-eastern new england over the next 1-2 hours.

  13. Most places come in under an inch with tonight’s rain. Sun pokes through tomorrow. Not a big deal tonight. Bust.

  14. Logan at .19 for today before the break the last few hours. Rain looks like its about to start up again.

  15. Welcome to Woods Hill Hockey! πŸ˜‰

    J/K πŸ˜€

As for the “northeaster”, had my doubts this was going to end up a big deal. The Euro over-developed it, and has also been horrendously too slow.

I may divorce it for a while, the Euro that is… πŸ˜‰

GFS, eh, so-so, but maybe putting a little faith in it for a while in the faster flow pattern. Yes it’s unsettled but things keep on moving right along.

This is the reason that Sunday may turn out to be a mostly cloudy day, at least in part.

  16. .78 here

TK is it only cloudy Sunday or possible rain? My daughter is still worrying about the bounce house. Thank you

    1. With warm air coming in aloft, can’t rule it out, but will lean away from it for now.

  17. Not buying a mostly cloudy day on Sunday with the exception of late afternoon and evening. Should be lots of early and midday sunshine.

    1. I wouldn’t be surprised if we have a significant amount of middle and/or high cloud cover by mid to late morning. It may go mostly cloudy, partly sunny, then mostly cloudy we we move through the day.

The warm advection pulses are moving so fast in this pattern.

Originally the model forecasts for this period of wet weather we are in now brought it in on Friday morning. Meanwhile, 24 hours sooner…. I was raining at 11:30AM today with wet ground already.

    1. Very active severe weather season in Plains, Midwest, and East. Luckily we have been protected by being in the cool and more stable air much of the time. Of course with that there has been a price to pay: Old Salty’s “FAVORITE” weather. πŸ˜‰

  18. Light to moderate rain looks to be settling in for the next several hours, .63 so far with all lakes/ponds/ and rivers r high and will remain high going into July, we need a week to just dry out geez, I’m not sure I’ve seen the local lake this high in June, last yr same time it was well below normal and today it’s even with the road, I threw a 3 inch diameter rock in the water and the little waves from that came rippling over the road, it’s maxed out

    1. Charles in needham area may go into flood. I haven’t heard about the Sudbury in saxonville but it has gone from below normal to very full in one week. Amazing how quickly it can change…..in either direction

        1. Charlie are you seeing .63 in North Attleboro. I only have had .15 today. Just signed the contract for my waterproofing system to be installed next Wed-Fri :).

  19. 65F at Barrow, AK……… 54F in Boston. Yup, all is good and normal in the northern hemipshere. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Radar seems to be filling in some, wonder if that convective band over eastern Long Island rotates up a bit overnight. We’ll see what happens ……..

    1. It’s all in the placement of the upper features.

This pattern is not actually that unusual. πŸ™‚

      1. TK do you think this should wind down soon. I have had almost an inch of rain in the last 4 hours.

  20. Impressive radar this morning. Heavy rains for most of the last several hours for most of us. Wen will it end. Basement is about to flood again. Can’t end fast enough! Hope all of you aren’t having these problems in your basements too, but with the amount of rain we are getting again and what we have had in just the past 7 days alone, I think that there will be many more basements flooding this morning.

  21. Good morning, all. I’m one of your lurkers. I had an opportunity to sleep in this morning and its a no go – up at 4:30 because my husband has been up pumping our basement. I’d like to trust the “future” radar on weather.com – I have to drive west today for work and I am hoping the rain lets up early this morning. I’m OK with the rain – beats snow for me! Anyone want to estimate when this stuff clears out of here? Have a great day everyone!

    1. Hi Suzanne,

Tell your husband I know what he is going through! This is crazy and we are having a family birthday party tomorrow for my daughter. Hoping to be done with the water in the basement by then!

Should start to wind down from west to east this morning. Would be ending n the west (western MA and CT) in the next 1-2 hours and the east between 8-10. Hopefully we don’t get those pop up showers late this afternoon and evening. If they occur they should be brief.

        1. God luck to you and your husband with the basement. I met with Value Dry on Wednesday and they are coming Wednesday to install drainage under the concrete around the interior perimeter of my basement. Not a cheap solution, but it will be nice in the long term. If to often have problems, I suggest you call them. I have heard nothing but good things about them from friends. They are a national company, but this office is in Framingham. The poor guy I met with has been out on appointments until 1 am all week!

          1. Sounds like you have a guy in mind…otherwise I can highly recommend this guy:

            http://www.lapansbasements.com/

He use to work for B-Dry and actually invented many of the waterproofing technologies. Did my basement and not a drop…pump hasn’t even gone off at all!

  22. If I’m reading the obs correctly, Logan is at 1.35 inches total for the storm.

It sure is a chilly breeze this morning.

  23. Tom I asked the NWS for some precip totals as they have nothing on their home page.

So I am excited for this afternoon as I am getting a VIP tour of whdh with a focus on the weather department

    1. Hey Hadi tell Pete Vicki from framingham says hi. I got that tour a few years ago from Todd g. Its tons of fun

  24. We are just at 2 inches. Suzanne. Nice to see you here. Good luck and safe travels

North sorry you are flooding again

A friend who flooded badly in 2010 was told wednesday by a builder that if she didnt flood yet with all the rain we have had she wouldn’t. I just shook my head.

Longshot JR said if we reach 8.63 this month we will be sixth wettest on record. We are at 8 I believe already

    1. Thanks Vicki. Just got to get through the this one! Been up since 3. Working from home today.

      1. We are over 2 with 1.17 today. We were up to .83 last night around 9:00 and I don’t have a record of what fell between 9-12

  25. Hey North, send it up this way. No sun here yet, but rain has stopped and it now looks like I can stop working on my ARK. πŸ˜€

    1. LOL. That radar at 3 am was scary. Goodbye and good luck to this storm. Hoping the basement starts to recede by tonight.

    1. I don’t think so. Sun should be out soon and we have a top ten day tomorrow. Tonight should be dry but cool.

  26. Reading the Logan obs, I see 1.61 last 24 hrs, as of a couple hrs ago and another .13 after that, so I believe Logan received 1.74 inches.

  27. stupid clouds are still hanging on. i want the sunshine….. At least this weekend is gonna be good. going to the cape on saturday then going to my grandparents on sunday. Then filling out paperwork for a job, starting work on thursday. at least 12.50 an hour maybe a little more. …. Im going to be in the per diem system, but my first job will be from monday through friday 8-3 . This job ends in august. and yes some of this is for college but also so i can go to Belize next summer πŸ˜€

  28. I dont know if anyone is on here but my youngest is now going into overdrive because she saw 30% chance of rain Sunday afternoon and they are having her son’s bday party with the bounce house (can’t rain on it) from 12-4 on Sunday. She’s working on moving everything until tomorrow but to me 30% isn’t a lot. Does anyone know if this is a reality and if so a rough idea of timing??? Thanks.

  29. In the “careful what you wish for” category, the sun is cooking some showers N & W of Boston. Some isolated ones may survive the trip southward into the Boston area this evening but they should be isolated. So the rain threat is not quite over yet.

Tomorrow is certainly the pick of the weekend – lots of sun though there may be some mid morning to midday puffies with lingering moisture, a little cool air aloft, and sun heating the ground. If they do form they should go away during the day.

Sunday, lots of high & middle cloudcover from advancing warm air aloft. Some of these middle clouds may be enough to produce sprinkles/light showers from late morning on. Not a bad day but not perfect either.

  30. Hope the party goes well Vicki. I know how stressful it is for the mom. πŸ™‚

Not sure OS will be on at all today but if you do….GOOD LUCK this weekend. I know all too well what is involved in those phone cutovers and here’s to a successful conversion!

    1. Sue, many thanks. Just bopped in at the end of the day.
We’re all set. I think we’re in great shape. We shall see come Monday.
      πŸ˜€

    2. Thanks Sue. The kids are at Veronica’s in marshfield getting the cake now. Tomorrow is now party day

      Good luck OS!!!!

        1. They love it. Veronica’s did the wedding cake for my oldest and its now a tradition. Too much frosting for me but I love that its a tradition.

  31. Wow!! Did anyone see about LA schools giving out free cars and I pads for perfect attendance?

  32. Had a great time with Pete. Golf was on so he had tons of time to talk and let me behind the camera. We had a nice discussion. Camera does add a couple pounds:)

    1. Fantastic! Happy you had a good time.
Did you ask Pete what he could do about getting us some
Summer weather. This TK type of weather really blows. πŸ˜€

  33. He He He He…..When OH when are we going to get sustained Summer weather?
Looking at the 12Z Euro…850MB temps really suck ALL the way for the next 10 days.

Let me give you an example. On day 10 (240 hours) 850MB temperatures are WARMER in the Northwest Territory of Canada than it is in Boston!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    http://meteocentre.com/models/explorateur.php?lang=en&map=na&run=12&mod=ecmwf&stn=TT850&comp=1&run2=12&mod2=ecmwf&stn2=TT850&hh2=216&fixhh=1&hh=240

    1. July 18th, ending ….. July 23rd …. Then autumn kicks in πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

      1. Thanks. However on the scale of things when it comes to basement flooding……its minimal. And thanks to TKs help a decision was easily made :).

How’s the basement North? And I hope all went well for Suzanne and everyone else with flooding
