The Week Ahead

11:08PM

A low pressure trough and associated disturbances will move across the northeastern USA bringing a few episodes of showers and thunderstorms to southern New England through Tuesday. This will not be a repeat of the washout rains of last week, however.

High pressure will dominate mid to late week and into the start of the weekend, delivering a  pleasant air mass at first, which will then turn warmer and more humid with time as high pressure sinks to the south toward the end of the week. An approaching front by the end of the weekend may trigger more showers and thunderstorms.

Forecast for southeastern New England (southern NH, RI, and eastern MA)…

OVERNIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows middle 50s to lower 60s. Wind W around 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Partly cloudy. Isolated showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon. Highs in the lower 80s, 70s some coastal areas. Wind W to SW 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Chance of showers early. Patchy fog in valleys late. Lows 60-65, few upper 50s interior valleys. Wind W under 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon. Highs in the upper 70s, cooler some coastal areas. Wind variable 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 56. High 76.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 56. High 79.

FRIDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 60. High 82.

SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 66. High 84.

SUNDAY: Partly sunny. PM thunderstorms. Low 67. High 83.

  1. Thanks TK !

Wonder what might cook up this afternoon with sunshine, warm temps, dewpoints getting near 60F and the disturbances you mentioned above.

  2. Thanks TK.
Keeping an eye on the sky the next two days with the threat of thunderstorms. Storm Prediction Center has us in the see text both today and tomorrow as there could possibly be an upgrade to slight risk. I am thinking non severe storms but it is worth of watching.

  3. the 9:35am update from Taunton is rather eye opening regards to thunderstorms this afternoon. Probably not many of them, but what are could be supercells, etc……

  4. It is a beautiful day Emily but we need keep an eye to those skies for the possiblity of strong to a locally severe storms.
Storm Prediction Center has SNE in the slight risk zone for severe weather. I don’t see a widespread severe weather outbreak.
Thunderstorm Index at a 2 with the biggest threats strong winds, hail, vivid lightning, and heavy rain.

    1. From the NWS at Taunton:

THE MAIN THREATS WILL BE LARGE HAIL AND/OR DAMAGING STRAIGHT LINE WIND GUSTS. IN FACT…A SUPERCELL THUNDERSTORM OR TWO IS POSSIBLE
WITH HAIL TO THE SIZE OF GOLF BALLS GIVEN GIVEN THE AMOUNT OF SHEAR AND COLD 500 MB TEMPS. THE TORNADO THREAT LOOKS LOW GIVEN MAINLY UNIDIRECTIONAL WIND FIELDS…BUT CAN/T RULE ONE OUT GIVEN MAGNITUDE OF SHEAR AND IF SOME MESOSCALE INTERACTIONS CAN OCCUR.

  5. Looks like it could be a fun afternoon ……

Storms already percolating to our north and west…… and they have plenty of warmth to feed off of.

  6. We MAY do this all over again tomorrow afternoon. There are some ingredients in place for another round of possible strong to severe storms.

  7. Broken lines today. Better support for isolated severe but not for widespread severe. Best instability is from just south of Boston to near Providence.

Tomorrow there is better support for a late-day squall line of some sort, but it may have trouble holding together in eastern and southeastern areas due to some component of wind from the ocean.

    1. Still going. What a pain in the butt! We’re getting there. Almost done.

Thank you so much for asking. 😀

  8. On about the northern third of the horizon, I can see some tall cumulus clouds and cirrus blowoff from the storms.

I’m guessing some who are further north must have darker skies, if not rain and storms going on.

        1. Thats right where the big storms look to be, one batch out in Boston Harbor and a nasty batch just north of Marlborough ….

    1. Like Vicki said – very dark in Sudbury. Just started to thunder and clouds moving very fast. I expect heavy rain anytime now.

  9. Fitchburg’s obs show they got .55 inches of rain in 27 minutes, wow !!!

That big storm is getting close Vicki, I’m not surprised things are crazy out there.

  10. Pretty decent T-storm just blew through. Intense rain. Couldn’t tell if there
was hail, too busy working. Plenty of Thunder and Lightening.

    😀

    1. It looked like it was going to be nice and juicy. Wind lasted five minutes, no down pour just a quick minor rain event.Go Bruins.

  11. The big cell that was over Fitchburgh made it to Woburn but just as it was coming overhead it was getting cut out of the newly developing line and started to just rain itself out. However it was strong enough for a handful of close lightning strikes. However, no hail here, and only moderate wind gusts.

  12. Looks like an outflow boundary formed ahead of the line causing it to cool the air ahead of the storms once it got south of the pike, thus collapsing them.

      1. They start Wednesday. I was so worried sitting at work I. Quincy and watching the torrential rain. Got home at 7:30 to find only .0 fell here. I dodged a bullet.

  13. Greetings, I hope everyone is well and enjoyed the storm. My question to you is I saw a double rainbow this evening and it was real vibrant. Then just below the main rainbow I saw at least two more rainbows thinner and lighter than the main one but still there to see. My wife saw it also so it’s not just me this time and I don’t remember ever seeing one before. Can anyone shed any light on this phenomenon. Thanks much.

    1. Hi Merlin. I can’t answer your question, but we were all out looking and sadly didnt see one. Glad you not only saw one but several

  14. The current temperature in my living room is slightly over 1,000 degrees. B’s are making me EXTREMELY nervous.

  15. I don’t know about Logan but here in Dorchester the storm started as hail. Did that happen in anyone else’s location?

I hate thunderstorms so hopefully no repeat for tmorrow. The only “repeat” I want is of a Bruins victory. 🙂

  16. on my way into boston. it felt like a summer day. It just felt like something was gonna happen today weather related. The thunder and lightning were natures celebration fireworks …. got a job as a mailman at mass general. good starting job paying12.30 an hour… All day i was looking outside and already felt. crap its such a nice day …. i want to be soaking up that sun.

  17. The B’s didn’t play their best game in my opinion, but certainly tough enough! There is one thing that separates the Bruins from many others, they do play as a team and there is no one on the Bruins that says it’s all about “Me” or “I.”

    1. It is incredible that they were less than 90 seconds away from being eliminated in round 1 against the Leafs.

  18. Happy Birthday, Vicki! (I hope I have it right)

Kind of a sticky morning today.

Is the wind going to be out of the east today? If so, would that cut down on the severity of any storms? L

    1. The “L” is an error – started to write something else but deleted it and the L wasn’t deleted.

    1. Thanks Sue. Hehehe. I am spending it in a rather unusual way. I have a kidney stone stuck and was at hosp most of yesterday and am scheduled to have a stent put in this afternoon. But if they get rid of the stone it will be well worthwhile 🙂

      1. Oh no!!! That is no way to spend a birthday! Hope they get you all fixed up soon so you can celebrate YOUR day. Good luck!

  19. Keeping an eye on for another round of showers and storms this afternoon. Its look like heavy rainfall will be the biggest threat with the storms today.

      1. Hey AceMaster… Its looks like will start to see the activity start to develop around the mid to late afternoon timeframe.
I am so hoping for an extended stretch of dry weather since the course I golfed Saturday had standing water near or just
to the side of the green on a couple holes including a bunker with standing water in it. Amazingly the greens were
fast despite all the rain we have had here.

        1. Thanks JJ. I second that about wanting an extended dry stretch. More summery weather. It is amazing how greens can absorb water and then dry out so quickly. Our league was cancelled last week, not cuz it was raining, but the course was closed due to standing water. We are only allowed 3 rainouts this year and we are right there at 3. Keeping my fingers crossed!

    1. Happy B’Day!!!
We All have them, but at our age, they seem to be closer and closer
      together!! 😀

  20. Nothing severe with that line but no doubt a lot of heavy rain is happening. Its something to keep an eye on this afternoon.

      1. Now two severe thunderstorm warnings up in SNE one in the Worcester area and another toward the CT River Valley.
I am not expecting a widespread severe weather event.

  21. Happy Birthday! Vicki 🙂 Wishing you a wonderful birthday and hope all your birthday wishes come true!

  22. Starting to get a little worried. That cell by Worcester, now moving east and drifting a bit south is staying together and looks to be getting stronger.

  23. The severe thunderstorm, now having passed through, left a good sized lake in front of my house in Westborough because of the blocked off drainage. The last time we had a lake in front of the house was actually July 7, 2009, which were the worst thunderstorms I had ever seen in my life. The pool overflowed, the basement flooded, and the lake formed in front of our house was massive. We got 4.5 inches of rain in less than 2 hours that day, it was just awesome.

  24. Happy Birthday Vicki !

Well, I have followed this rain all day …… Our field trip was to Canobie Lake Park in Salem, NH and it poured rain from about 12:45 to 1:30pm. We followed it on the bus ride home from 2:45 and outran it around Weymouth ……. and now it is an absolute torrent at my house in Marshfield. Whew !!!

  25. Cars have been stuck in the Brigham and women’s parking garage for 2+ hrs and people r beginning to riot and 1 car just blasted through the exit paddle thing and cops arrested him and now there’s a person that rammed into another car in frustrating, just talk to a ct couple they said never seen anything like it, I told her its embarrassing, still no one moving geeez

    1. And another person yelling and I can’t even hear myself think bc there r 50 cars in this garage just laying on horns

      1. I got in this line at 3:45 lol ut oh now someone’s yelling at the attendant someone’s gonna get hurt

    1. I thought I heard something about a power outage on Mass Ave causing gridlock. I have no idea if that has any connection to where you are at and what your experiencing.

  26. Wow…so many special birthday wishes. Thank you all. And some from people we haven’t seen in a while….Please stay and play 🙂
