  1. That Wednesday event may be a nighttime or overnight event (though obviously it’s way too far away to be sure). I also am not buying the overly troughy picture that some model runs have been painting for the end of June & early July.

    1. That makes me happy TK because we are off to Maine next weekend from Thursday to Sunday. Keep that trough out of here!

  2. I hope it is late Wednesday night since the summer concert series kicks off that night at Plymouth Harbor. Great band playing and I will not be happy if it gets rained out.

  3. Thanks TK.
Its certainly looking very summer like. I wonder here in CT will this be the first time in what seems like a long time that it will not rain during the PGA tour stop here. It always seems to rain or we get a severe weather outbreak when the PGA tour tour stop is here as was the case in 2009 and 2010 when we had EF1 tornado in Wethersfield 2009 and in 2010 the Bridgeport tornado also EF 1 tornado.

    1. Sadly Mac remembered that but I didnt. I can’t remember where in CT he said it is being played. Will you attend?

      1. Hi Vicki… The tournament is being played in Cromwell, CT at the River Highlands course. Its a good field this year
considering its a week after a major. I will not be attending the tournament.

        1. Hi JJ. Thanks. My inlaws used to drive to the masters for the pre tournament play but always said it was better to watch on TV because you saw more than just one or two holes. Enjoy!

  4. I personally don’t smoke pot but between 35-45M or 17% of American residents smoke pot daily and around 155M (50% of population) have smoked it at 1 time or another, this is all up 3% in last decade and no signs of changing, again I wouldn’t touch it but just saying. Personally they have lost the pot battle long ago, just look at the states, they should stick with the problem drugs.

    1. I’m all in favor of medical marihuana. Otherwise I could never do drugs cause I need to be in control…….I know that comes as a shock. Hehe

  5. Well this weekend is the SUPER MOON weekend when the moon is closest to earth. I think the moon appears to be about 10% brighter though it’s probably tough to tell. I don’t know how cloudy it will be in the evening, but maybe we’ll see it.

Looks like we could have afternoon showers and possible t-storms many-a-day this week and maybe next weekend too.

Good news is that there is nothing much on the tropical storm front though it’s very early in the season. There are a couple in the Pacific, but likely headed west over the water and the fish.
    http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/?epac

(I think while hunting and pecking around I saw something that gave me reason to believe a possible tropical low (or lows) might appear in the western Carribean in roughly a week. Can’t remember what I was looking at. Maybe I am getting older. :))

  6. Todayโ€™s Accuweather Trivia Quiz.

When the moon is closest to the Earth in its obit, we call thisโ€ฆ.
    A. Apogee
    B. Perihelion
    C. Perigee
    D. Aphelion

    No cheating. Answer later today.

  7. More on the Super Moon –
The so-called “supermoon” occurs when the Moon reaches its closest point to earth, known as a _________ full moon.
The effect is to make the Moon seem 30% bigger and 14% brighter than when it is furthest from the planet.
Skywatchers who miss the phenomenon this weekend because of cloudy skies will have to wait until August 2014 for the next one.
When the Moon was high in the sky, it looked normal. But as it got closer to the horizon, a “kind of optical illusion” occurred where it looked bigger when compared with trees or houses.
It might be possible to dispel the illusion by turning away from the Moon, bending over and looking at the sky from between your legs. ๐Ÿ™‚ HA!

  8. If I heard correctly, the time of the full moon and when its closest pass of the month occurs is within 4 minutes of each other. When those times are nearly the same, the closer the moon to earth, the more those separate, the further the closest pass is.

So, in this case, its something in the mid 350,000 km …….. when the closest pass occurs around a quarter moon phase, it “only” gets to the low 360,000 km range. Same relationship holds true for when the moon is furthest away each month.

  9. Thank you everyone for the super moon info. Is it tomorrow night or tonight. I had 23 stuck in my mind

  10. By the year 2040 1/3rd of Americas Population or 120 Million people will live in either Texas,Florida or California.

      1. Think about those numbers?! Like I’ve said before the country will be ruled from those states and feel bad for our kids and grand kids that r trying to buy a home in Mass. It’s terrible what we’ve done. And we think its normal.

            1. It’s very sad and gut whrenching to know that my kids and nephews will probably not be living here in Mass when they get older bc of the way we wanna live. My nephew that’s 18 is already talking about moving and is looking at schools and eventually wants to move in a milder climate, very smart kid #2 in his class out of 302 and its sad to lose so many kids and adult family’s to the sun belt, and then we try to replace our own with immigration from different country’s, it won’t work forever, it’s very sad

              1. Its not the way we want to live, Charlie. Its the way they want to live and they should go someplace that offers the lifestyle they want. In the same regard, those who love the lifestyle Massahusetts has to offer should be allowed to enjoy and preserve it. Its simple really

                1. See that’s where we disagree, half of the millions of new englanders that left left bc it was a better quality life elsewhere and us we vote to make rules to make it expensive like limit new housing and apts so there’s no inventory but then if a corporation wants to make money it’s a sin, Massachusetts in a business sense is a generic Russia, people try to control whatever you do. it’s not simple Vicki, it’s a slick sneaky way to be like what? If we built, prices would come down some and boy do we need housing esp in Boston. But we turn a blind eye and say idk. So sad, anyways good day vicki

                2. Meant to say bottom line massachusetts won’t have much say in America by the time 2040 comes anyways unless we change, we will be powerless as a state in this country.

    1. possibly even more than 120 mil…most projections have the US population @ 360 mil by 2030. Lots of different theories on what states gain the most…California for sure…also Texas…don’t bet on Florida tho…

  11. Tk, if your out there what’s the forecast for the rest of the weekend for Cornish Maine. Been raining on and off here all afternoon. Thanks.

    1. Looks like about a 50/50 shot of showers/storms again Sunday with highs in the lower 80s and on the muggy side. Not much wind either, light southwest.

  12. Answer to Todayโ€™s Accuweather Trivia Quiz.

When the moon is closest to the Earth in its obit, we call thisโ€ฆ.
    A. Apogee
    B. Perihelion
    C. Perigee
    D. Aphelion

The correct answer is C, Perigee.

    1. Thanks longshot. Tom taught me that over a year ago and I was amazed I remembered. Its an appropriate time with the supermoon!!!

    1. Hadi…I don’t think he hates this area altho he has certainly touted Texas as being better at times. IMHO I don’t think Charlie knows what he really likes (except for the Patriots!!). Demographics always change in this country…it’s a fact of life. I don’t really think it’s sad at all.

  13. I was thinking, as June can go temperature wise, this one hasn’t been too bad, obviously with early and mid month significant rains. Here’s the high temp breakdown at Logan thru 6/22 …..

    50s ….. 1
    60s …. 4
    70s …. 10
    80s … 6
    90s … 1

    1. Interesting…and this morning is just a beautiful summer morning. Nice temps and a slight breeze making it seem even more pleasant.

      1. I seem to be just feeling the increased humidity in the breeze here. I didnt feel it earlier. And I didnt feel it at all yesterday. The breeze is lovely isn’t it?

        1. It is nice … The 9am obs show the increased humidity you are feeling ….. with all dewpoints now 60F to 65F.

  14. (2) 90+ F days at Logan for the warm season thus far, perhaps to add 1 or 2 more the next handful of days. So, probably headed into July with a total of 3 or 4. I think Logan averages somewhere btwn 10-14 (90F days) annually.

    1. Not bad and thanks tom. It was around 87 here yesterday but with a lovely breeze. No AC needed. One of the reasons I don’t favor HHH is you need AC and I far prefer having house open to the outside and sitting on porch/deck. Yesterday was a perfect summer day for that

      1. Agreed, that was very nice the last few days. I think by afternoon, our luck with comfortable humidity runs out.

  15. Hadi in most cases I love it here, but there are things here that we think is ok that will bring New England down and that pisses me off bc the people of Boston just 40 yrs ago wanted to show how much power we have before 1950 but now new englanders or Bostonians show no confidence in its economy and no edge to the city, I don’t want my Boston to fall behind into the black hole to no where like most want, and who wants to live in a state that has no power in this country, trust me we give people to many rights when no offense they won’t be here in 10 or 20 yrs, it makes me sick, anyways live New England but why stop there I wanna love love New England, have a great day hadi ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. not sure exactly what you are saying here Charlie as your soapbox seems a little muddled. In 1950 (or 1960 for that matter) Boston and New England were on an economic dowslope that showed no signs of changing until forward thinking people helped turn it around. I look around today and see that economic upturn still in place (albeit slowed overall)…but if you think Texas is a better place (and you have stated that before) then feel free to pack up and leave. Not sure what sets you off with these occasional “shout outs” about life here in New England. Do you do it to stir the pot out here or what? Have a nice day ๐Ÿ™‚

New England loses more educated persons that are actually from New England than anywhere else in this country, itโ€™s not that they ultimately want to leave Boston or New England itโ€™s that there ultimately forced out of the region, ( our own) and thatโ€™s terrible have a good day all
    Reply

    1. I’ll assume this premise is correct …. with that, perhaps this occurs because our area produces the most, highest and brightest minds for the US and the world and then, understandably, people take their abilities and chase their dreams.

As long as our region is the education capital of the US, our region’s influence isnt going anywhere. Further, watch the results of this Tuesday’s special Senate election and then tell me if the heart and soul of this region ( not that I necessarily agree with what will be the majority ) has gone anywhere.

      1. See Tom that’s what I’m talking about, everyone doesn’t want to change to allow this region to go ahead of everyone else, I’m not fine to watch massachusetts lose another house seat and fall into the abisk.

        1. We just won’t change our selfish thinking hence why we don’t build hence to expensive hence lose population and educated professional, why can’t we do more to retain them and build more housing, we have this false sense that we have enough housing lol and we don’t hence 1 reason it’s so expensive. Thanks Tom for the response ๐Ÿ™‚

          1. We only have about 14 giant new condo complexes in Woburn.

Not enough housing around here. ๐Ÿ˜‰

        2. Oh….now I see what this all about. You really aren’t being sincere here about what you really want to talk about…Democrats vs Republicans (Liberals vs Conservatives).

      2. Agree Tom. We are also the technology hub and medical capital. I’m not worrying about our area. And we do not need to be TX or CA. Both are in trouble. We handled the recession better than many because of what we are.

We have to be careful we don’t lose our great educated kids to a city that eventually in the next 20 yrs could be Bostons demise, bc this is truly what there trying to do, Austin is eerily getting more and more like Boston only it’s 1/3rd the price, just saying, I’m sure ill hear the same stubbornness, selfishness, and our city is becoming more and more in the past, lets be a city that leads the future not a city that did lead the future.

  18. While I have to admit that I’ve answered some of Charlie’s posts I have to say that they are becoming a little tired. There are other avenues to vent your political rants, etc and I think they should be used for that and not this forum. That’s just my 2 cents. Others may agree or disagree. To me its one thing to talk about other stuff beyond weather (sports, etc) but (and I’ve said this before) once you get into any talk of politics it can set off a lot people the wrong way. I’m pretty much a middle of the roader when it comes to politics but I don’t like coming on this page and being hammered by some of the stuff that Charlie posts. If I wanted that then I’d go to the Globe or Herald’s editorial page. I don’t post here as much as others (especially in the summer) but I enjoy this page a lot. I’ll stand back and lurk now and refrain from replying to any of Charlie’s posts.

That’s just wild….what a stretch of weather for them or anyone for that matter.

While thinking about the weather up there I also remembered some YouTube links for the annual Midnight Sun game that is played up there. Bill Lee (the Spaceman) pitched in one and here is one of the many links for that game.

    1. Sometimes when a super-ridge sets up and parks it makes itself a stone mountain. Happens in Europe sometimes and of course other locations, but the European ones are notable because of the impact to highly populated areas and agriculture.

  20. I suspected this would happen: Watching model trends, starting to see the runs trend weaker with the trough amplitude and also placing it further west, and allowing a more rapid retrogression of the Atlantic ridge as we end June and start July.

What was once nearly an East Coast cut-off has now become a lower amplitude open wave trough about 500 miles further west, and the result is that a medium range forecast of cloudy and showery days is now becoming a warmer and more humid sun/cloud with scattered t-storms type of forecast.

      1. Possibly. Of course the middle H (hot) varies for some people – to some, 80 is hot, while others want to see 90+ before they consider it to be hot. Regardless of that debate, it would lean more toward the HHH in comparison to the CCC (not clear calm cool in this case, but cloudy cool clammy).

  21. DP Is up to 67 here from a consistent 62 yesterday. Breeze not quite as consistent. Temp hovering just at 80. All in all a real beginning summer feel. I like it ๐Ÿ™‚

  22. Great to hear TK! My brother is going to be here from California and hoping to play a round of golf with him on Friday.

  23. Hot to me is 90 degrees plus. It is more humid today but I would not call this oppressive.

  24. All the mets have PM thunderstorms for Wednesday.

Jimmy and/or TK…are these likely to be strong/severe?

    1. Hi Philip…. I am not seeing severe weather here in SNE on Wednesday. It looks like Northern New England will is the area to watch. Stay tuned. I would not rule out an isolated storm to pop up somewhere in SNE with the heating of the day today tomorrow, or Tuesday but nothing severe expected.

    2. I’m not sure Southern New England sees anything until later at night. Timing things is going to be difficult for a while. But agreeing with JimmyJames that NNE is the area to watch first.

      1. Thanks to you both…hope those storms stay away from SNE for the entire week if possible. ๐Ÿ™‚

  25. If you look at those overnight lows when there in the mid 60s and higher that is a pretty good indication the day is going to be humid if not oppressive.
I can’t believe were going to get through the Travelers Championship here in CT without any rain or severe weather. This almost never happens. It should be a great final round with fan favortie Bubba Watson tied for the lead.

    1. I like bubba too and your state is offering them a wonderful week of weather for the tournament.

      1. The weather has been great for the four days of tournament play which doesn’t happen often when the PGA tour is here.

  26. Sorry guys I will no longer bring those topics to this blog, I’m thinking a few isolated storms later today

    1. We all do it……well some of us do it and I’m among the some ๐Ÿ˜‰

I wouldn’t mind a storm later today. We had some nice soft rain in the night.

Tom what was parade for in marshfield ??

  27. 2PM obs:

    Boston 89 dp 68
    Blue Hill 87 dp 69
    Norwood 88 dp 70

Dew points are getting up there.`

  28. OS was it you a while ago that traced rabbit tracks to a fence and then wondered how they got on the other side ? We have a pair of baby rabbits who play in our yard. They repeatedly jump effortlessly up the stone wall in our yard 3 ft- and our neighbors 5 ft as well as over the 5 ft fence between our houses

    1. Vicki,

Yes it was I. It was Winter and I could see the tracks in the Snow.

Since then, I have actually seen the rabbit. ๐Ÿ˜€

    2. We have lots of young rabbits in our yard and they don’t really seem to get spooked by us at all. Very cool!

  29. Now a severe thunderstorm watch up for parts of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine until 11pm

    1. There’s a warning from barre to Essex junction VT. Will that line of storms in NY fall apart before arriving here?

      1. Just mho, probably, but we always should keep watching.

Even the NWS in Taunton has a chance of a storm in the Forecast,
even for the Boston area. ๐Ÿ˜€

        1. From NWS:

          LATEST MESOANALYSIS INDICATING ROBUST
INSTABILITY WITH MLCAPES NEAR 2000 J/KG ACROSS NORTHERN HALF OF
FA. WE DO EXPECT WIDELY SCT STORMS TO EVENTUALLY MAKE IT INTO OUR
N ZONES THROUGH EARLY EVENING. HOWEVER…THE DRIER AIR IN THE
COLUMN S OF THE MASS PIKE IS FORECAST TO SLOWLY LIFT N THROUGH
EARLY EVENING SO THE THREAT WILL BE CONFINED TO FAR N
          ZONES…MOSTLY N OF ROUTE 2.

  30. I think the severe weather threat is going to be up in northern New England today. As I said earlier I would not rule out an isolated storm to pop somewhere in SNE with all the heating we are experiencing.

  31. Logan has hit 90F, I think a heat wave may be in play. We’ll see …. day #3 of this warm season.

  32. Nice weekend up in Maine. Today was hot and the better day with full Sun. Yesterday had the on and off cloudy skies with. Rain showers.

    1. Phew glad to hear it John. Was worrying you’d be rained out after your comment last evening. Enjoy!!!

  33. When I posted it was raining, not pouring and it was like the third Time it rained since getting there at noon time. Though like I said not pouring. It did however cancel are planned bonfire but fireworks show went on. Today was sunny and hot and we left at 3pm. My cousins live up there and it was a small family reunion at there house. So nice as my uncle and other cousins also were there from Florida. We never get to see them so it was so nice, to short of a visit. My grandparents passed about 13 years now. My grandfather always had his movie reel out when his kids, my mom and her siblings were growing up. Were talking 50,60 and 70s footage my mom as a kid and so on.when I was growing up we had a traditional showing of those films every thanksgiving. When my grandparents passed my mom sent everything to her brother in Florida so he could put on DVDs for all the siblings. Well it took all these years but he presented his siblings with that DVD lastnight. My mom cried and said it was the best day of her life. I was so happy for my mom. I miss my grandparents and it was so nice too see them again

    1. John that brought me happy tears. I so miss the family reunions that our kids grew up with. There is nothing like them. We are actually working on one next year….a whole new generation

I’m glad it was a special weekend for you and am so very happy for your mom.

      1. Thanks Vicki. I was very, very close to my grandparents so to see those movie reels was cool. 5hrs of footage.
