Showers/Storms Today Lead To Great Weekend

7:46AM

A slow-moving cold front running into tropical moisture will produce showers and thunderstorms today, some with heavy rain, as it moves west to east across southeastern New England. This front will accelerate offshore by early Saturday allowing for fair and warm weather with lowering humidity. Great weather will continue Sunday and Monday thanks to a high pressure area dominating the weather. The next shower and thunderstorm threat will be Tuesday when a disturbance is expected to cross there region. More great weather returns by the middle of next week as it looks now.

Forecast for southeastern New England…

TONIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Additional scattered showers and thunderstorms possible. Muggy. Lows in the 60s. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Clouds may linger SE MA otherwise partly to mostly sunny. Lowering humidity. Highs 85-90, cooler Cape Cod. Wind W 10-20 MPH gusting to 30 MPH.

  1. Thanks TK!
The clouds and rain that are moving through right now are a good thing and will prevent the atmosphere from destabilizing. As I said last night root for the cloud cover since there are some ingredients in place for strong to possibly severe storms and if the sun were to come out that would not be a good thing.

  2. Thanks TK. I put a bunch of posts on the old blog earlier. If anyone cares to, they can check them out there.

One thing, SPC has us in a 2% chance of Tornadoes. IF anything were to happen,
it would have to be WITHOUT benefit of sunshine as we are locked in. Satellite
images show clouds locked in and radar is lit up with moderate to occasionally
    heavy rain.

Rain started in BOSTON right around 7:30AM.

Personally, I’m NOT expected any severe weather. Perhaps some flooding rains, but
severe weather I think not. Will monitor just the same as one never knows. 😀

        1. I know, they’re at Philadelphia, right next
to the Delaware River. One side of Rt. 95 is the Satdium and the other side is the river. 😀

  3. I’m thinking rapid clearing around 8pm tonight and looking like a fantastic weekend. Another thing to watch today is the wind. No wind in Boston now but It will be arriving.

    1. Hi John – wind literally just picked up here. Don’t know if it will last but I chuckled when I read your message and then saw the wind. Some power you seem to have 🙂

  4. 14 jersey’s ? wow I thought I was bad with 2 skins jersey’s. Charlie I can refer you to someone for some help 🙂

  5. I am VERY excited about the game. It doesn’t seem possible it’s time for football again though. Six months ago today we woke up to a “few” inches of snow!!!! Ahhhhh memories.

  6. Even with the rain it’s a nice day here. Mild and little breeze making things seem even quieter than it already is. Nice!

  7. Pardon me for the lack of “blog updated” message. Go check out OS’s posts on the last blog. Great info. 🙂

  8. From NWS:

CONSIDERING NOTABLE TURNING OF THE ATMOSPHERIC WIND PROFILE WITHIN THE LOW-LEVELS AND STRONG EFFECTIVE SHEAR UP TO AROUND 35 KTS… ALONG WITH INSTABILITY VALUES /MLCAPE/ POTENTIALLY RISING TO AROUND 1000 J/KG…ECHO THE SPC CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK FOR POTENTIAL STRONG TO DAMAGING WINDS ALONG WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF A BRIEF TORNADO. WITH MARGINAL MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND THIN CAPE PROFILES…NOT ANTICIPATING LONG-LIVED STORMS.

      1. I think some of the echos near Springfield and out in west central CT are starting to look more intense.

        1. Tom, I agree. First signs of anything meaningful.

Here’s a little something from the NWS concerning these storms:

AT 1 PM EDT…NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR WAS TRACKING A LINE OF STRONG THUNDERSTORMS ALONG A LINE EXTENDING FROM NEAR BELCHERTOWN MASSACHUSETTS TO CANTON CONNECTICUT…MOVING EAST AT 25
          MPH.

THESE STORMS MAY STRENGTHEN AND BECOME CAPABLE OF PRODUCING DAMAGING WINDS. STAY TUNED FOR LATER STATEMENTS AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS.

  9. Interesting OS and as always thank you. I’m out from 1:30-4:00 and hoping all remains calm during that period. I am going to ask my youngest to keep an eye here to see if you (or others) notice anything and have her txt me if there is a concern.

  10. SPC still has us for a 2% chance of tornadoes. Also they added a slight risk area
SW of our area in NJ, PA, and MD.

  11. Haha Hadi, my earliest jersey are Tippet and Grogan,Bledsoe,Brady,Bruschi, welker,Gronk,Mankins,Wilfork,Flutie,Law,Vinateri,Faulk, and Light, not sure what my next 1 will be 🙂

  12. Thunder and lightning here, no severe weather here but localized flooding has been a problem, already 1.02 here

        1. Oh well, I couldn’t see it. Perhaps it’s gone now.
Storm has moved way to the East. 😀

  13. Absolutely pouring in Boston. Should be fun at 3:30 leaving the city. I mean its pouring bigtime.

    1. You are so right. Look at this enhanced wording from the NWS office at
      Taunton:

      2.) SEVERE WEATHER

CLOUD BREAKS EVIDENT BETWEEN THE BATCH OF HEAVY RAIN PUSHING OFFSHORE OF EASTERN NEW ENGLAND…AND THE AFOREMENTIONED SECONDARY TROUGH AXIS MOVING INTO THE MID- TO LOWER-HUDSON RIVER VALLEY.

AMPLE SUNSHINE WILL BE THE KEY TOWARDS MODIFYING THE ENVIRONMENT MAKING IT FAVORABLE FOR BOUNDARY LAYER DESTABILIZATION AND ENHANCING WEATHER ALONG THE SECONDARY TROUGH AXIS.

WILL RE-EMPHASIZE EARLIER POINTS…CONSIDERING NOTABLE TURNING OF THE ATMOSPHERIC WIND PROFILE WITHIN THE LOW-LEVELS AND STRONG EFFECTIVE SHEAR UP TO AROUND 35 KTS /SEE VERTICAL WIND PROFILERS DERIVED FROM WSR-88D RADAR/. THIS ALONG WITH INSTABILITY VALUES /MLCAPE/ POTENTIALLY RISING TO AROUND 1000 J/KG IN THE AFOREMENTIONED REGION BETWEEN THE TWO AREAS OF DISTURBED WEATHER ECHO THE SPC CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK FOR POTENTIAL STRONG TO DAMAGING
WINDS ALONG WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF A BRIEF TORNADO. WITH MARGINAL MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND THIN CAPE PROFILES…NOT ANTICIPATING ANY ROBUST LONG LONG-LIVED STORMS…RATHER SMALL DISCREET SHORT-LIVED STORM CELLS.

FEEL THE ENHANCEMENT OF WINDS ALOFT COUPLED WITH DRAGGING OF MOMENTUM TO THE SURFACE FURTHER HEIGHTENS THE THREAT OF STRONG TO DAMAGING WINDS WITH ANY STORMS AND HEAVY RAIN CORES.

      1. 4 PM reports show not too many places with any real sunshine…clouds look to be filling in.

      1. Yep I was hoping the AC was finished for the summer but we have used it to dry out yesterday and today.

  14. Pouring in Sudbury now but skies are brightening. Looking at doppler radar, even if sun comes out, would be out briefly as there are more showers not too far to the west.

    1. Pretty crappy, eh?

It was brutal. Took me an extra 5 minutes to get home! I hate it when that
      happens.

Seriously, I was only 5 minutes later. It wasn’t too bad for me, luckily. 😀

    2. Pike was bumper to bumper from before exit 17 to well past where I drove over it in natick earlier. Mac said he had very little traffic but he comes home 30 to avoid the pike. Odd. You’d think others would figure it out but shhhhhhhhh don’t tell them

  15. The line of showers that was looking good when it entered western CT and MA now seems to be weakening. Inf fact most of the activity is now in CT. It will be interesting to see that even holds together as it moves into eastern CT and RI.

  16. In Sudbury for dinner. Sun is out. Storms look to go south. But that was a quick check of radar

  17. Young Pat receivers looking hungry and catching the ball, though a little tenuous. Feeling like Vereen will need a a good year.

      1. He will be needed. It is no secret that after the departure of Moss; the loss of Hernandez; the move by Welker; the failure of Ocho; the aging of Branch; the trade of Woodhead (capable of tough catches); and the injury to Gronk, that the Pats were the one of most receiver needy teams in the league. Belichick scoured the planet for receivers and as a lover of TEs, he was willing to look at anybody and anything that could catch a ball. Hopefully a couple of the newbies will come through big.

  18. I don’t mean to bash, but ONCE AGAIN, NWS completely over-reacted, over-hyped, and over-worded the severe weather threat.

They are so trigger happy it’s not even amusing anymore. It’s discouraging.

I’ll be talking to some of them in person on October 26 and I aim to find out what’s up with this. They are going to turn everyone into nonbelievers soon and the cry-wolf syndrome will end up screwing the public over.

    Anyway, rant done. 🙂

Also, showers done! Still muggy for now, but drying out as the night goes on and what a fabulous weekend ahead!

    1. TK, I would agree with you, and wondering since the days of events like Sandy (and other weather events as well) whether the NWS feels like they are under pressure to be overly vigilant and don’t want to get caught with their pants down … so they purposely (maybe unconciously) over-forecast.

    2. TK. Its upsetting. Some of us are cautious when they put out warnings like OS posted. There was some serious stuff there and for one I am not amused ……well maybe more than one since you are not either. Of all agencies we should not be losing confidence in the NWS

      1. I’m really hoping it gets addressed at the conference.

I understand the inexactness of the science and the uncertainty that comes with trying to predict the atmosphere down to local detail, but this is clearly not just that. Ah well…

        1. I hope you are heard also because you are right. When they lose confidence of the average person it actually gets dangerous

          1. Yeah, suddenly everything is tornadic.

Pretty soon it’ll be: “a few wispy cirrus clouds on this cool and calm afternoon, but we’ll be eyeing the situation as some of these ice crystal clouds may start to rotate and drop a 35,000 foot long tornado.”

    1. I love games like this. We get to see what the new players can do and how they work with the team as a whole

      1. Fun preseason game so far. Many times games like this aren’t as entertaining as this one has been so far.

Meanwhile in KC…Ortiz just tied it up with # 22!

        1. Maybe because we know a lot will be the ones we see all year.

I’ve decided I misunderstood John. He was talking about the announcers never making the first string. They are driving me nuts

          1. They are now so busy discussing their plans for tebow they missed a flag and then talked through the penalty. Shoot me now..

  19. Signs of heat returning just after mid month.

Heat in August? Oh wait that doesn’t happen. 😉
