Summer Encore

4:25PM

Who said the heat was done weeks ago? Not I. Climatology says that you do NOT count out hot days at that point in the season. While it’s true we slipped into a cool pattern for the end of July and the first half of August, for the time being we are out of that pattern and the peak of the warm side of the new pattern will take place during the next 2 days as a high pressure ridge dominates the weather across southern New England. No not everybody will reach 90 Wednesday & Thursday, but we will see a few 90+ readings around the area. A cold front will put an end to that as it slides across the region Thursday night, bringing cooler air in for Friday and the weekend. A back-side warmup is expected for next Monday before we slip into a back-and-forth regime as we head down the home stretch of August next week.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England (southeastern NH, eastern MA, RI)…

  1. Thanks TK! The warmth feels pretty darn good out there today so I am looking forward to the next couple of days. I am not a huge fan of heat and humidity but when it is only lasts a couple of days it really isn’t so bad. Loving your forecast for Monday as we will be driving out on Plymouth beach for the day. Looks like great beach weather!

    1. Hope you enjoy it! Wish I could be in the Plymouth area more often. I love it down there. The only time I end up down that way is storm chasing and even that’s been a long time since I had a chance to chase something to the storm magnet otherwise known has Plymouth Harbor. 😉

    2. Sue I love this weather also. To me its the best of summer. Hot not oppressive

Enjoy your beach day and all other days next week

  2. TK – Any early thoughts on Labor Day Weekend into the first few days of school for most? 😀

    1. We were just watching it rise over the seawall in Brant Rock. Pretty orange the first 10-15 minutes.

I dont know about anywhere else, but with the winds having calmed down, its like a wall of humidity was rolling in off the ocean. It has become quite a muggy evening.

      1. 74 with 63 dP here. Not a bad night at all

Nothing like watching the moon rise over the ocean. Enjoy

  3. I did tk and thought today was rather nice, I didn’t know once it got back in the 80’s again that it signified a return to summer, those consecutive days of 90+ are long gone, and that’s all the really matters IMO, I’ll take 75-85 degrees for highs, this weather is great!! I’ve seen a lot of 70’s the past month for highs and believe overall that will continue over the long haul going into Sept and mid Sept

    1. A return to summer? Summer hasn’t ended yet. Hard to return to something we are still in. 🙂

And of course 70s will be dominant in September. Climatology indicates this.

I never said we were going to have long strings of 90+. I said that we were not done with 90 degree temperatures for the season back when those TV guys called it over just after mid July.

And they are about to be proven wrong.

  4. TK…the Plymouth Waterfront Festival is this weekend. It is a good take if you feel like taking a road trip. 🙂

  5. Good morning all,

Does anyone know what the High Temperature was at Logan yesterday?
I never saw it. I’m thinking around 88??????????

Will it make 90 today?? It’s going to be close. We shall see.

    Interesting….
ALL of the Tropical activity depicted by successive runs of the GFS have now completely disappeared. I’m seriously wondering IF our Hurricane Season
has come to an end due to that Saharan Dust?????????????????????

We shall see. There is still time.

    1. It sure has seemed that way, OS. Everytime something looks to be brewing it goes poof. I’ve been hoping TK would weigh in on that and maybe he has and I missed it??

    2. I think somethings going to develop soon close to the US. Perhaps the Gulf of Mexico ??? The water vapor loop shows a very moist atmosphere down there and perhaps a bit of a less hostile environment.

I may sound like a broken record, but I really dont like that the tropics are so quiet. No heat is being released from the tropical oceans down there, which means the heat content should be at a max for anything that develops.

Alright, sneaking in one more ….. before school starts ……. camping trip. Have a good day all !!!

      1. Tom,

Certainly, The Saharan Dust has NOT affected the Western
Caribbean and the Gulf, but so far not much cooking there either.

        There is still time.

      2. What a camping summer you have had Tom. Enjoy.

I’m not sure I follow the concern for no heat being released? Would it affect winter temps? or are you saying the heat being trapped should promote development?

        1. Vicki,

I “think” that what Tom means is that with no
heat being released so far, it is still ALL available, thus
potentially contributing to a MONSTER, should one
          ever develop. 😀

          1. ahhhh thanks – that was what I was thinking with my second option. But if the dust has dried out the area between there and here, I wonder if even a monster would be unsustainable. Questions from a rank amateur to be sure.

  6. To me were in the time period now Aug 20th to Oct 20th where a lot of named storms happen. It only takes one landfalling hurricane to make it a bad season. Andrew in 1992 comes to mind.
Back here non severe storms tomorrow.
    Threat level index
    Flooding – Low
    Wind – Low
    Hail – Very Low
    Tornado – Very Low

  7. 11 AM Boston obs:

    Temperature 80.
    Wind SOUTH EAST.

Another sea breeze. We’ll see just how long it lasts.

    😀

      1. Yes, since both originated in the dry desert area.

This occurrence is really not that unusual. This particular one was just one of the larger ones.

        1. I had read it wasn’t unusual but hadn’t heard of it before because I didn’t have all the great info available on this blog.

Thanks TK – makes sense……now make it go away please??

  8. Tk where and how much rain tomorrow? Also what areas around here have the best shot at rain tomorrow ? Thank you in advance 😉

    1. Isolated to scattered, 20-30% coverage of 0.25 inch or less with isolated heavier during tomorrow. Most rain falls on Friday. I will be adjusting the forecast for slower timing in a while.

  9. Brett Anderson has above to well above normal temps for the fall from the Maritimes nortwestward into Hudson Bay.

TK – How much if any will this affect our temps in SNE and the rest of the northeast this upcoming fall?

      1. Yes, the falls have been warm. I was in the thinking that a real warm fall translate into a mild winter. I am no longer in that camp.

        1. I can remember wearing a very light jacket as early as the first day of school. Our fall temps have definitely changed over the years.

          1. Even after the 2011 snow I sat outside in a sweatshirt to hand out Halloween candy. Making sure costumes were big enough to fit warm clothes under is no longer the norm either

          2. I think it runs in cycles. I can remember back in the late 70s when I had season tix to the Pats..sitting in my end zone seats in Sept and Oct sweltering. I can also remember being in high school in the early 70s in Norwood and having some snow squalls on Columbus Day.

            1. I can remember that as well but it seems they were the exceptions. I can also remember a Christmas Day in 1964 maybe 65 when it was so warm I was disappointed that I couldn’t wear my new “tennis” sweater. I have no idea why it was called that but it was the thing to wear when I was 15 🙂

What I don’t remember is it being consistent enough that we couldn’t always ski Christmas vacation week…..yes I’m repeating 🙂

    1. We’ll have to see because the overall orientation will have to come into play. The Hudson Bay warmth probably translates to mild air for a while here. If that warm bubble shifts more toward Greenland we get cold.

        1. Probably several weeks.

The thing is, warmer than normal and cooler than normal patterns have always happened. It’s just that now it’s become mainstream for everybody to want to know the cause and for most meteorologists to talk about it. Hence the conclusions that what we are seeing is somehow “unusual”. It really is not unusual at all.

  10. Boston was given an official 89 degrees yesterday. I think about a half dozen towns hit 90. Maybe 90 in Boston today but I have doubts.
