Humidity Hangs On, Fall Feel Follows

2:24AM

Thunderstorms made a run for eastern MA on Wednesday night but ran into issues, specifically some warm air above the ground which capped the atmosphere, and in addition to forcing the storms to die out as they moved closer, kept any from forming in the area during the day. A few downpours and storms did regenerate and move across northeastern MA and southeastern NH, but all the activity is now gone. A second disturbance may send a cluster of showers/storms across northern MA and southern NH during the early morning, but no severe weather is expected. During the day Thursday, sunshine will end up dominant as cloudiness from the first batch of storms is offshore and afternoon storms will be only isolated. The main action, in the form of a line or cluster of showers and thunderstorms, will arrive during the later evening or night, and may hold off in much of eastern MA and RI until after 11PM. This will lessen the chance of any severe weather, which will be much less likely well after the maximum daytime heating. Nevertheless, the atmosphere over eastern MA, southern NH, and RI, will be far less stable than it was during Wednesday, so storms are a good bet.

The cold front responsible for the storm threat will be very slow to exit on Friday, and a wave of low pressure forming on it along with upper level low pressure moving in from the west will combine to cause additional showers and possible thunderstorms during the day – a slightly more pessimistic forecast than previous. By FridayΒ  night, genuinely drier and much cooler air will finally make it to the region, setting us up for another feel-of-fall day on Saturday, as surface high pressure builds in. Another quick turn-around day will occur Sunday as high pressure sinks to the south and the air warms (but not nearly to the levels of the current spell of heat). Another cold front flies across the region early Monday, sending another chilly air mass in for the early part of next week. Temperature moderation will follow by the middle of next week as the roller-coaster pattern continues.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England (southern NH, eastern MA, and RI)…

TODAY: Some cloudiness and a threat of a shower or thunderstorm northern MA and southern NH early to mid morning, otherwise partly cloudy to mostly sunny and hazy with additional isolated showers or thunderstorms possible during the mid to late afternoon. Continued hot and humid. Highs 80s to around 90 except some 70sΒ  South Coast areas. Wind SW 10-20 MPH and gusty.

TONIGHT: Heavier clouds arrive from northwest to southeast along with episodes of showers and thunderstorms, but much of the activity may hold off until later at night. Storms may be strong. Warm and muggy. Lows in the 60s to around 70. Wind variable 5-15 MPH, higher gusts near some storms.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy with episodes of showers and possibly a few thunderstorms. Continued humid. Highs in the 70s. Wind variable to NNW 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy, cooler, lowering humidity. Lows upper 40s outlying valleys to middle 50s urban centers. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

  1. Thanks TK.
Will see what happens to the slight risk area when the SPC updates today’s outlook just between 8:30 – 9 this morning.
Heavy rainfall, strong wind gusts, and vivid lightning look to be the biggest threats with these storms today.
    Threat Level Index
    Flooding – Elevated
    Wind – Elevated
    Hail – Low
    Tornado – Low

  2. Thanks TK. Hoping those showers and storms hold off until after the game tonight. Hoping not to get soaked leaving the game!

      1. Thanks Vicki! Saw my Mom last night. Seemed to be improving some. Still just on liquids. Talked to her this morning and she had sounded very tired, so they were giving her something to sleep. She said she wasn’t having pain, so hopefully she just needs to sleep a little since she didn’t sleep much last night. It was 4 weeks yesterday she has been in there….This is crazy…Still trying to persuade my Dad and Brother to move her to Boston, but they love Falmouth Hospital. Very frustrating..

  3. SPC has expanded slight risk to include more parts of SNE in their latest update. The exception the eastern parts of SNE.
Don’t see this as a widespread severe outbreak but I am not ruling out strong to possibly locally severe storm.
As I indicated earlier heavy rainfall, strong winds, and vivid lightning the main threats with these storms which is why I am going Elevated with the wind and flooding on the threat level index. Hail and Tornado going with low.

    1. JJ by the time the convection makes it to Eastern sections, the lifted index
is not nearly impressive. Perhaps -3 or -2 at best.

Although there “may” be severe weather today, I think it will be confined to
more Western and Northern areas. Unless something changes, I don’t see
Eastern sections getting any severe weather. πŸ˜€

  4. We may see that game end before any “significant weather” arrives, and partial credit for this goes to Gabrielle.

  5. Was thinking that as well, that the storm would stall the progress of the front until it passed us by and then pulls it through. Classic set up with a tropical system offshore.

    1. Yes and most often the most heavy duty action is with the pre-frontal trough.
Looks to be the case today. We’ll continue to monitor. No watches and warnings at this time that I can see. πŸ˜€

  6. Sun has been out here all day but the sky has that Hazy, Humid summer look. Clouds moving in now but still hazy blue sky between. 84.6 with a 72 DP and a steady breeze.

  7. Thanks TK! I am hanging in the parking lot of one of Woburn branches bringing a new ATM online. It is getting a bit toasty!

  8. SPC has Extended the Slight Chance of Severe Weather area into the Boston
area and even to the SE of boston.

I just came back from lunch. On the way to the office, I noticed Verticle growth
to the cumulus clouds almost overhead. I think to myself, I wonder IF there
might not be convection in our area SOONER than previously thought.

    We shall see.

    1. SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH OUTLINE UPDATE FOR WS 524
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
      105 PM EDT THU SEP 12 2013

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 524 IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 1000 PM EDT FOR THE FOLLOWING LOCATIONS

      MASSACHUSETTS COUNTIES INCLUDED ARE

      ESSEX FRANKLIN HAMPDEN
      HAMPSHIRE MIDDLESEX SUFFOLK
      WORCESTER

      Suffolk County includes BOSTON.

      1. Of course, Boston is at the extreme Eastern edge of this watch, which means mostly likely NO SEVERE weather in Boston, but
it also probably means some thunderstorms are virtually
a certainty. Same applies to Foxboro tonight.

This watch would indicate that the game tonight does get
        interrupted sometime while in progress.

  9. Its cloudy here. There are storms north of me and to my southwest. It will be interesting if this zaps the energy and by the time the actual front comes through it will be more of heavy rain threat than a severe threat. Were under a severe thunderstorm watch until 8pm where I am where the rest of the state is under the watch until 10pm.

    1. Keep on the look out. Quite sunny here. I don’t see any significant
cumulus growth at all now. I do see considerable high cloudiness, presumably
“blow off” from storms to the West.

  10. What I am noticing with the radar link you posted earlier that back over western parts of PA it looks like a little bit of a bow is trying to form with the actual front. The SPC must think that will hold together progressing eastward and why the watch is up until 10pm.

      1. If you click on the any of the statements on the right side, you
will go to a web page with full details. πŸ˜€

  11. 91 with. 69 DP and very gusty wind up to 18 mph. OS significant clouds but as you said not building so I’m thinking your description fits here also

  12. I think Taunton has run out of colors if any other type of advisory is needed. Click on their opening page and there’s like 10+ things already in use. πŸ™‚

  13. The nws is already sending their bogus tstorm warnings. I just got one on my phone. I thought maybe if there were one anywhere in middlesex cty I got one but I’m not seeing one anywhere.

Considerable cloud cover now. Wind calmed down some

    1. That’s Hilarious. If you subscribed to this, I would COMPLAIN bitterly to the
NWS. That is Absurd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s CRIMINAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What IF it were a tornado warning and there wasn’t a tornado within
      100 miles of you???????

  14. The bow echo with the front now in central PA. This looks similar to what happened last July when a bow echo formed and by the time it reached western CT it weakened and was just a heavy rain producer. Hopefully that happens this time.

    1. No forecast bust here. πŸ™‚ Though maybe a little more activity in southern NH than I thought, coverage-wise, during the afternoon.

    1. On one hand, yuck ! Its not fun to have it so warm in the schools. On the other hand, I’d like to see Logan get 2 more and have 20 for this summer.

    1. I have been all along. For eastern MA only went isolated possible during the day, and evening. I only had to work out the timing of any line or remnants that made it, and I have been leaning later versus earlier. NAM was later, GFS too early. The difference in performance between these 2 models of late is stunning.

  15. Interesting radar loop!

    http://www.wunderground.com/radar/radblast.asp?zoommode=pan&prevzoom=zoom&num=6&frame=0&delay=15&scale=1.000&noclutter=0&ID=BOX&type=N0R&showstorms=0&lat=0&lon=0&label=you&map.x=400&map.y=240&scale=1.000&centerx=400&centery=240&showlabels=1&rainsnow=0&lightning=0&lerror=20&num_stns_min=2&num_stns_max=9999&avg_off=9999&smooth=0

Aside from the interesting pattern depicted here, what does this say for the game tonight? Impact while game is in progress or after completion of game.

If and I do say IF there is any activity left this far East, then there will be an
Impact during the game. We shall see.

    ENJOY the Game every one.
Look for Kembrell Thompkins to have a break out game!

    1. I hope he does. What a stinker first game he had, I mean real bad. Feels like I’m in a wind tunnel here in pembroke.x

      1. Yes. And he looked so good in preseason.

I’ll be watching him. The next 1.5 hours are going to drag.

Wish we had more weather to keep us busy.

I think Eastern sections are not going to see too much, as per usual. πŸ˜€

        1. Well looking at that satellite loop, it sure looks like
something will survive, even if not severe. We’ll be watching. πŸ˜€

        2. Love breezy warms nights like tonight and they do seem to happen often in September through early October.

Looking for the Pats to win big tonight.

Taping the series finale of Burn Notice and switching to the Sox too…Magic # 8 to clinch the division.

          1. I enjoy them as well. I was sitting on the porch for a long while enjoying. Darn I don’t like when games start at 8:30

      1. I’m not so sure he’s missing as much as his guys are missing. And did I say last week and this we need a wide receiver. Maybe I didnt πŸ™‚

  16. Theres a wall of water headed toward Foxboro…or is that Tom Brady crying about his receivers not catching his passes

    1. Hahahahahahahaha. Its closing in fast isn’t it and we have thunder here so game may be called when it reaches there.

  17. Red Sox lucky to be down by 1 run.

I don’t even want to talk about the Pats. This could be a long, long season.

    1. It was intense longshot. Repeated simultaneous thunder and lightening to the point the house just kept shaking. Lasted a bit but not terribly long. Tons of rain

    2. Looks to be headed your way longshot. Be safe. It took every ounce of patience I had to keep from turning the TV off while waiting to see if thompkins catch was called back. Darn

      1. Tough game, north. I dozed off at alf so missed the rest. Was it ever halted due to lightening? Also saw therecwas some fighting. Not something I remember seeing at a pats game

        1. No never got delayed. I left right before the end, so didn’t see the fighting but heard it on the radio. Got to sit in the suite that is next to Bob Kraft’s. Teddy was in there for most of the game. No sign of Trump though.

  18. Everyone tired this morning ?? πŸ™‚

2-0, a partial bye week and another 10 days to heal all the injuries. Its ok !!

Still humid, dewpoint 60F all the way west to Albany. πŸ™

  19. Quite a storm we had last night. Lots of thunder and lightning and it really poured.

I am still sick – went to dr. yesterday w/low-grade fever that had just developed and a persistent cough for a wk. He checked me over and said my lungs are clear and because I also have bad pain when I cough he checked that out and said I pulled a muscle. He says I have a viral infection – if fever goes above 100 degrees or I get discoloration in mucous to call back and will get antibiotic. I have not been sick with anything like this since 2008! And I feel crappy. He recommended some things like Mucinex which won’t cure it but might make me feel better – I have bad post nasal drip. My husband never caught it and no one else in my family has it. I wonder if all the stress I’ve had all summer has brought my immune system down. Couldn’t enjoy the HHH we had a few days ago. Oh, well. Sorry for the complaining! Hope everyone has a good wknd.!

    1. Rainshine – I am very sorry to hear that. I sure hope you feel better quickly. Rest and drink lots of fluids. I think when a person is very stressed, his/her immune system just can’t keep up.

      1. Thanks, Vicki. I hope so, too. The dr. said my cough should subside by nxt. wk. But from past colds and such in the past ( I used to get colds at least once a year up until 2008) sometimes I can have a cough that lasts up to 2 mos.! Hopefully, this cough will get better faster.

    2. Sorry to hear that Rainshine. You have had a tough year. Try the Mucinex. I don’t take many medicines, but my wife convinced me to take that last year and it really helped. Hope you feel better soon!

  20. Awful devastation from flooding in Colorado and the fire on the boardwalk in NJ just made me feel sick. After all they have been through.

    1. I know, just after the rebuild from Sandy too. Not that it would be good at any time, but at least they made it through most of the summer season and it won’t be as economically devastating as if it hit happened in May and they can try and rebuild some before next summer. Still horrible that it happened at all. How much can one area take.

      1. They had to tear down the new area in two places for a fire break also. Good point that they at least had the summer tourism.

  21. Figures it’s Friday the 13th. What a miserable day so far. Nothing is working or going right at all.

    It’s all the Patriots fault.

Patriots Piss Poor Performance in the Pathetic Puke Bowl Puntarama!!!!

Oh and while I’m at it, what a WIMPY thunderstorm. πŸ˜€

    1. OS – definitely NOT a whimpy thunderstorm here. It was amazing. I was in surgery for the one on June 18 which I was told was big. I fully enjoyed two on July 20 at the beach. The one last night was nearly as close to the one at the beach and I think the only part missing was, in fact, the beach πŸ™‚

Have I said we need a wide receiver? Ugly, ugly games so far. However, a win is a win………darn I don’t like that saying πŸ™‚

And where is the nice, dry air.

    2. I was almost embarrassed to be a Pats fan last night. That was by far the worst football game I have ever witnessed. Hope they take Vicki’s advice and get a damn wide receiver soon!

      1. They won!! They have spoiled you for almost 2 decades that when its an ugly win, it’s not good enough now, Patriots defense most importantly looks good

        1. Psssstttttt I think the comments have been a win is a win. You know even Brady said they were ugly…right? Have a goos night πŸ™‚

          1. Psst the offense didn’t do well, the defense won the game, so a third of the team stunk especially Brady being a veteran and all, you can’t blame the rookies and you can’t blame overthrows on Bellicheck, Brady needs to continue to work will his offense and improve

          2. I would never be embarrassed to be a Patriots fan, that’s why I said that, my favorite sports team has never and will never change, the Patriots could be 3-13 and they would be my favorite team still, I don’t jump around to each team like a lot do judging there favorite team on how good they are, since 1985 it’s been Patriots,Celtics, redsox, bruins in that order,

            1. Charlie it was an expression. May i respectfully suggest you not take things quite so seriously…and please stop picking on sue. You dissed her town and she gave you a pass. Learn by example. oh did I say we need a wide receiver

              Have a good day πŸ™‚

                1. Nice Charlie πŸ˜€ In case you haven’t noticed I may have a few strong opinions also. I also have trouble keeping my mouth shut. I know my faults ….that’s for sure πŸ™‚

  22. Got to give TK kudos !! Above on his forecast, he says for Friday ….. continued humid and it certainly still is. Whereas, I might say that other forecasts created the idea that it would be less humid by now. Looks like you have to still go all the way to Burlington, VT to find a dewpoint in the 50s.

On the Pats, I’d say I’m thrilled that somehow they are 2-0 and have given themselves an opportunity to have a very good season recordwise in spite of a few questionable personnel decisions and the many injuries. I’d rather be a poor looking 2-0 and a flashy looking 1-1 or 0-2.

    1. In this pattern the fronts have no real big push and so the dry air just kind of eases in many hours after the “front” passes.

  23. last night a win is a win for the patriots, Defense was good, Offense needs alot of work.
TK there are fireworks for yankee doodle at the marshal field are you going?

    1. Yes. Saturday night at 8:30 but Ocean State Pyrotechnics. Their displays are pretty unique. I’ll be there with our friend Emily from the blog and my son (who will be joining us on the blog in a matter of days).

  24. Hello from windy Puerto Rico. Thanks TK for the forecast. Sunny and chance of storms nightly but beautiful so far. Trip just for us without the kids and it feels odd but fun.

  25. 85 and DP of 75 but let me tell it doesn’t feel half as humid as home. I guess the wind and the fact of being right on the ocean.

    1. I’m Jealous. Have a great time!

I was at the airport in San Juan once on a stop over, but that is close
      as I ever got.

      ENJOY!

  26. I can’t remember who had the trough around their house because do flooding. Was it you, North? I can’t believe I don’t remember. My business associate just returned from two week trip and had water and mud in his basement. They have had water problems before but don’t have a sump pump. They are trying to decide what to do. I don’t understand how mud gets in but maybe it isn’t unusual?

      1. Didnt you have a sump but it didnt do the job? I think they’ll try a sump first but is it unusual for mud to get into a basement? Thank you, north!!

  27. Hello everyone, been very busy with work and of course being up late bc of the game, it’s finally cooling off here with the dp down to 61, OK, now the Patriots game was of course tough to watch considering what we have endured the last decade in a half, these ugly wins are no longer good enough, well just winning is still good enough for me. We just need to get healthy again and gradually bring these rookie receivers in as supposed to throwing out to the wolfs on some there 1st nfl game of there career, injuries have dessimated the Patriots offense, but they will improve and may improve dramatically once some of the pressure comes away as more players return from injuries, good day all, I had on field passes last night, awesome!!

    1. Psstttt. A win is a win. And someone said we need a wide receiver although I can’t remember who

Otherwise Charlie everyone has said the same u r saying. The kids need to work it out. There is a lot of potential. However, projecting wins with potential is ……well, its obvious what it is

  28. The TV mets this morning left the impression that the a.m. showers were pretty much going to be “it” for the rest of the day with maybe an isolated sprinkle and considerably drier by days end.

Of course as always TK was on the ball as usual. Downpours this late afternoon and still humid in the mid-60s…UGH! I sometimes wonder why TK sees things those TV mets don’t with all their studio “equipment”. πŸ˜€

  29. Does anyone else have a ton of spiders invading there homes? I have way more than I ever had. Do you know how to get rid of them?

    1. TJ my daughter in Uxbridge said she does. My youngest here said she found one the other night and it was big enough to be doing push-ups. She killed it. Clearly she didnt get the Robert the Bruce message. No wonder we had the storm last night
