Sunday Morning Update

7:40AM

Here comes the front! The rain arrived in the pre-dawn hours in most of the southern NH, eastern MA, and RI region, with a few showers leading the main area. This area is just making it onto Cape Cod as of 7:30AM, and of course will end there later (early afternoon). Everywhere else, the rain will be ending from west to east by late in the morning. This afternoon will see a quick transition back to the very nice weather we have been experiencing. Though there may be some additional passing clouds later today as a gusty wind develops, think of this as the delivery of the very nice air mass that will hang around, courtesy high pressure, for much of if not all of the coming week (more details tonight on The Week Ahead post). For now a quick updated forecast…

TODAY: Rain exits southern NH, RI, and eastern MA by late morning but lingers on Cape Cod until very early afternoon. Clearing west to east following with sunshine dominating much of the afternoon though some additional passing clouds possible later in the day. Highs around 70, holding in 60s most areas. Wind SW shifting to W 5-15 MPH, then NW, increasing to 10-20 MPH with higher gusts later.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy to clear. Lows 45-50 except lower 50s urban centers & Cape Cod. Wind NW 10-20 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Highs 60-65. Wind NW 10-20 MPH and gusty.

TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY: Mostly clear nights and mostly sunny days expected. Overnight lows upper 30s to upper 40s early in the period, middle 40s to lower 50s later. Daytime highs 60s Tuesday, middle 60s-lower 70s Wednesday, upper 60s-70s thereafter.

Looking at the models, which I have done a lot less of this year, I think we are not looking at any more precipitation for well over a week. I know it’s New England and everything is subject to change, but am I right?

    1. Anything is subject to change to one degree or another (no pun intended) but I am pretty sure we go from this afternoon into the start of next weekend (if not longer) with nothing in the way of precipitation.

  2. NOAA’s monthly / season outlooks are out as of 2 days ago. They have changed their tune a little bit. So while we have the media throwing almanacs at us (duck!) saying how cold/snowy the winter is going to be (with not a lot of scientific basis other than the solar cycle), and we have of good friend the ECMWF telling us not to put away the Summer clothes until sometime in early 2014, we have the government backing off on their warm outlook beyond October – not saying cold, but not keeping it above normal as they had for several forecast cycles. In fact they keep it warm through October then the warm air goes *poof* and we are in neither above normal below through the Winter & Spring, then they return above normal for Summer 2014. Also notable is that they don’t have many wet areas. Could this be the start of that longer term dry spell I thought was going to get underway this Summer? Speculation only at this point.

    1. As long as we get a couple of killing cross for those mosquitoes and it isn’t overly warm. I do enjoy crisp fall weather. But whatever it is, can do much about it

    1. That darn Canadian. It did have the general idea with the last storm developing, just no where near the strength…..

  3. From wxrisk.com:

Fall arrives tomorrow, but at WxSouth, we like looking ahead. Already there are signs this Winter will be a lot different than last years. I explain it all (for free) at http://www.wxsouth.com if you’re a registered user, just click either “Winter” or “Public” to get the rundown.

Overall, there is a tendency for Greenland Blocking, a Tri-Pole Atlantic Setup, and much colder airmasses coming down with bigger Arctic Highs this Winter, that the last two Winters. The Pacific is different, the Atlantic is different, and much more. This spells more snow, ice and cold weather than last year, and probably more than the climatological 30 year averages as well. Check out the article for reasoning on why this could happen. Northern Alabama to the Washington DC region looks to be the winners as of this early stage in Winter forecasting. I’ll have the final outlook around Halloween.

    1. re: North Atlantic Tripole

I found this. Not a whole lot when googled. Perhaps TK can shed some more light on this?

It has long been recognized that fluctuations in SST and the strength of the NAO are related (18), and there are clear indications that the North Atlantic Ocean varies significantly with the overlying atmosphere. The leading mode of SST variability over the North Atlantic during winter consists of a tripole pattern with a cold anomaly in the subpolar region, a warm anomaly in the middle latitudes centered off Cape Hatteras, and a cold subtropical anomaly between the equator and 30Β°N (Fig. 1 Upper; refs. 19 and 20). SST observations also display a myriad of long-term (interannual and decadal) responses (21, 22), which allows for the possibility that decadal and longer-term variations in the state of the ocean surface imprint themselves back on the atmosphere.

    1. No Blue sky yet here. No .65″ of rain here either. Looks like it just sprinkled and that is all. πŸ˜€ I’d be surprised if it exceeded .25 inch. πŸ˜€

        1. I just checked logans and saw that also, OS. I wouldn’t have known it rained hard except it woke me and it came onto the porch which requires downpours.

            1. When it is hard and hits the skylight in our room it sounds as if someone is tossing ice cubes at us. Although Mac snored right through it so must just be me πŸ™‚

  4. Gronk NOT playing today:

    September 22, 2013 11:29 am
    Rob Gronkowski out against Buccaneers
    by Jeff Lippman | CBSSports.com

Although he had been upgraded to questionable for Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay, Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski was inactive for another game Week 3. Gronkowski continues to deal with his back and forearm issues and will hopefully be able to return Week 4 at Atlanta.

  5. Totally not weather related….or maybe just a little. We had a mass save energy audit yesterday. Its free. They tell you things you know but they replace all light bulbs free that need upgrading and the free services available are amazing. Once we clear at least 60% of the attic, they (being an approved contractor from a list) will seal the entire attic which includes a fitted cover for the two entrances we have to the attic. That is 100% free of charge. Then we will have the attic completely re insulated, insulation blown into the walls of the original part of the house (our additions are fine) and they cover that 75% with a 7 yr interest free finance for remainder but it isn’t a lot so we won’t take advantage of that.

We have been considering. Multi split AC unit and found out there is a $500 rebate for that

We all pay for this every month but so few take advantage of it that more free of charge services become available.

    1. Yes, signs of an Improved team. Thompkins and Dobson somewhat more
in Synch with the Master. Let’s hope the improvement continues.

      1. We know both have great potential. They looked better that’s for sure. Still work to do but they know that better than we and I have faith they’ll get it done.

I am always awed watching the greats when they know they mess up. They are so much harder on themselves than they are others. Its what makes them the best of the best

      1. If i had to pick just one I think its mine too. Many wonderful memories of walking home from school shuffling through the dry leaves piled on the side of the road and just the smell of autumn.

  6. The Halloween air blowns will go up this Saturday about six of them. Than on November first the turkey goes out and than the day after thanksgiving the big Christmas display both inside and outside.

  7. Two new additions this year for Halloween a howling wear wolf rising from the ground and a screaming ghost girl.

  8. It is strange that no one in my family has gone in my pool since august, we might be closing it, though when we close it probably turn and be warm again lol. next weekend will be UML marching band compititon number 1 and we have over 115 people this year.

      1. TK we are not doing that parade this year. πŸ™
The parades that we are doing are.
The Everett home coming parade, sunday october 5th
South yarmouth mass october 13th , we are not doing as many parades as last few years.

    1. Mac is still watching it. One more hole for stentson. We have agrees golf can be watched after the fact but football has to be watched live. I might have had some influence on that decision πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚
