October’s Home Stretch (Updated)

5:54PM

This is basically a second version of the previous blog with basically the same discussion but a different idea about the end of the forecast (the middle of next week). For my weather model savvy friends and readers you’ll be able to tell I’m leaning heavily toward the solution of the ECMWF (European) model. Here’s a quick summary of the coming 7 days (or the final 7 days of October) followed by a detailed forecast…

-Frosty Saturday morning as high pressure moves across the region then sun followed by clouds during the day as high pressure gives ground to a low pressure area which will pass north of the region Saturday night. Precipitation should be absent (passing north of the area).

-Sunday will be breezy with sun and clouds including nice football weather for the Pats game at 1PM against the Dolphins.

-Monday may have a few passing areas of clouds as a weak trough moves through, reinforcing some cool air for Monday night and Tuesday, which will be a nice day.

-Midweek changes: Looks like progression of weather systems will slow down and put high pressure off the coast and low pressure well west of New England. This could spell a continued dry pattern and a milder trend beginning during this period.

Details…

TONIGHT: Mostly clear – few high clouds. Widespread frost by dawn. Lows in the middle to upper 20s inland, lower to middle 30s urban and coastal areas. Wind W under 10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Frosty start, sunny morning, increasingly cloudy afternoon. Highs in the 50s. Wind SW increasing to 10-20 MPH with gusts up to 30 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Lows around 40. Wind SW 10-20 MPH and gusty.

SUNDAY: Partly sunny. Highs in the 50s. Wind W 10-20 MPH.

MONDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 36. High 55.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 31. High 50.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 28. High 53.

THURSDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 37. High 62.

  1. Thanks TK.
Its nice to see good weather for Tuesday October 29th. The past two October 29th’s we had to deal with the October Noreaster with that heavy wet snow and a year later Sandy.

  2. looks like a “flat jet stream is forming and that was what i was afraid would happen , with alot of the cold being locked up ,up in canada.

  3. Lakes will probably freeze near or earlier than normal unless we get a heavy amount of rain in November/December. Shallow lakes turn over much more quickly.

    1. Bite your tongue. There is no rain in dec. just snow. I’m going to have to organize positive thinking seminars I see

And speaking of seminars….where is OS?

  4. 4.3 degrees above normal for the month at Logan, Worcester 3.2 degrees. Logan is 2.56 inches below normal for the month for precip, Worcester 2.41. For the year (since Jan 1st), 2.33 and 1.59 inches below normal respectively. Since Sept 1st, 3.91 and 3.25 inches below normal respectively. Dry period has taken over!

  5. Given that 1 year ago, Sandy was off the Bahamas, here is today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

Hurricane Sandy’s lowest central pressure was …

    A. 27.76
    B. 28.26
    C. 28.76
    D. 29.26

    Answer later today. No cheating.

    1. We had our first fire in the insert this year last night. Felt good and got the chill out of the air. We heat our house with it (it’s centrally located and the design of this house lends itself to using the fireplace as a heat source), and it was good to not have to use the electric heat (someone back in the 70s was coerced into thinking that’d be the more economical way to go; the house originally had oil). When it was 34* last night, I picked the last of the tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants in my garden… felt sad though, there are a few baby veggies that had to be sacrificed πŸ™

      1. What is an insert? We heated with a wood stove years ago. Oldest had asthma though so it was not good for her. I love a fire. We had one last week and it smelled sooooo good. Wow still getting veggies!! I would have felt sad for the baby veggies too. It’s why I picked my last few flowers the other day. I love seeing them in the garden but they’d held on so long that I didn’t want frost to get them πŸ™‚

  6. Vicki to answer your question it was fun to track these storms and what was amazing was they happened on the same exact date. What was not fun was with the October Noreaster people without power here in CT for up to two weeks and the trees and power lines down in many places particularly the interior where most of the snow fell. I remember driving around that Sunday and I have never seen this that much damage in my life after an accumulating snow event.
With Sandy it was more of a shoreline event. There was one restuarant on the shoreline that just reopened after tropical storm Irene and Sandy came and caused damage to that restuarant again and once again it had to close.
Third straight morning with frost where I am. The frost came just over a week later than normal where I am.
For the trivia I will go with B.

    1. JJ I remember my wife’s grandmother who was 88 did not have power for 9 days and refused to leave the house in NW CT. You guys definitely have some good outages in CT. Maybe Vicki should move there :). She loves them.

    2. Hi JimmyJames and thank you for a great post. You are very right that we enjoy tracking and anticipation but no one likes the destruction. It’s a two edge sword. We had many out in MA for long periods after the Halloween storm. We were only out four with that and I think 3 with Sandy. Neither long enough for me πŸ™‚ But electricity is a minor thing and can be planned for. It’s the horrible destruction that breaks your heart.

  7. I am at the SNE Weather Conference all day. Love this annual event. Harvey and Dickie are already here.

    1. Tk anyway you could ask Harvey when his winter forecast from Judah Cohen will be out. No worries if you can’t. I would also love to get Harvey’s work email address so I can chat with him on weather events to give me a heads up work related weather.

      1. I wasn’t able to really chat with Harvey – only a quick passing hi. He was a busy bee…

        1. Vicki it says to install app. If I do that does it mean I’m on twitter. Don’t know what twitter is but don’t think I want to be on it.

  8. Answer to today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

Hurricane Sandy’s lowest central pressure was …

    A. 27.76
    B. 28.26
    C. 28.76
    D. 29.26

The correct answer is A, 27.76

    1. Hmmmm – I almost went with that because my daughter was born July 22 and it adds to 22…..except B adding to 18 was far more obvious to me πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

      Thank you, Longshot!

Seemed to be a lot of fun sidewalk activities in your area today as we drove through. We saw stores with paper taped to the front window and kids (and some not kids) painting pictures of pumpkins. And there were some families with kids in costume that appeared to be trick or treating somewhere?? Fun!!

  9. Thanks TK! πŸ™‚

I’m glad that you are leaning towards a dry Halloween, because if I decide to paint my face it won’t be a total mess haha. πŸ˜‰

I’m loving the fall smell outside, and the colorful leaves πŸ˜€

    1. Smells like fall leaves doesn’t it. I love the smell too. And the feel. Happy trick or treating πŸ™‚

  10. The Week Ahead posted early.
Will edit it this evening for time period update and any tweaks!

Big Halloween Parade in Woburn today. πŸ™‚
