Arctic cold front bringing a little snow to the region this morning then wind today and cold for the remainder of today through tomorrow before a warm-up commences and lasts into late week. Pattern is still dry as high pressure dominates overall.

Updated forecast for southeastern New England…

TODAY: Mostly cloudy. Snow tapers off NW of Boston earliest, around and south of Boston about midday, and rain/mix/snow toward Cape Cod diminishing during the afternoon. Snow accumulation up to 1/2 inch on unpaved surfaces. Highs around 40. Wind NW 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.

TONIGHT: Clearing. Lows in the 20s. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Sunny. Highs 35-40. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 25. High 50.

FRIDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 35. High 60.

  3. What took so long??? Looked out at 6Am and it was raining. Got up at 7 and it was still raining with temp about 37. I was shocked. By the time the temps coasted down to
    40 or 39, I fully expected the changeover. Didn’t happen until 7:30.

    Snowing here now. No big deal, but snowing none-the-less. 😀

  5. Thank you for the update, TK!! A friend was telling me the other day that he has friends whose son is TK. My friend asked what it stood for. They told him they couldn’t think of a name in the hospital when their son was born. Once they did come up with a name, they were so used to calling him The Kid that TK stuck !!

  7. well it was all rain here besides for the very end for about 10 minutes when it was a mix of snow and rain. now it has stopped.

  15. My mother is at home on hospice. She will be leaving us soon. She loves snow.The timing of the snow this morning was perfect. We were able to open the door and let her watch it. It brought a smile to her face.

    7. Very sorry Coastal. I went through something when my oldest brother was terminally ill in 1997. No words to describe how difficult it can be. I am glad that she did get to see the snow. It helps a little when you know they are enjoying something. Thoughts are with you and your family.

  19. Coastal, I am so sorry to hear about your mother. My mother has terminal liver cancer but right now the main symptoms haven’t started yet.

    My prayers are with you, your mother and your family. I am glad that she got to see the snow.

    1. I think you can expect a daily sunrise and sunset along with mild
      to warm temperatures with increasing fun and relaxation.

    2. Since I don’t trust the GFS I’ll take a look at some of my favorite guidance and combine that with what I know of the pattern and try to come up with a reasonable medium range outlook for you.

  23. Although I see cold air building in Canada and most especially over Greenland, I don’t
    really see any mechanism to drive it down into the US at least not through nearly
    the end of the month. What am I missing? 😀

    1. Hi Vicki! I read the blog every day, sometimes multiple times a day, but I often don’t write (as you know). I’m so excited you made my chicken!!! Let me know how the family liked it! I made a delicious soup out of it, too – so much flavor! I love this weather, too, and was excited to see the snowflakes in the air. I had hoped it’d stick, but I’m too far north.       To Coastal: I’m so sorry to hear about your beloved mom, but so glad she got to experience snow. I lost my mom exactly 13 months ago – her passing was unexpected and sudden, but as an only child, and her being my “person,” has hit me very hard, and I still struggle with her being gone. My prayers and thoughts are with you, your mom, and your family. Be sure to take this time to tell your mom how much you appreciate and love her. Much love to you.

      1. We Loved the chicken and we think alike. I’m making soup tonight also. The recipe just sounded as if it’d make a perfect soup. I would like to have you friend me. I am thinking of a way to do so without posting a full name here. Do you have ideas?

        I’m so sorry about the loss of your mom. I lost mine nearly 22 years ago and don’t think I miss her any less but often feel she’s with me :).

      1. It basically blows up after about 6 or 7 days, and just cannot handle the 2nd half of the period at all.

  27. From Friday-Tuesday it looks very mild with each day coming close to 60 degrees. The weekend looks very nice. I have 2 weeks of work left and then we are done until about mid March. I usually have about 12-14 weeks of down time, or should I say a lot of inside work. We already have the 2014 projected start date of Mon March 10th.

    1. Right, but not until Near Month’s end. I suspect this will cause November
      to come in above average. By how much is not totally clear at the moment.

    Ocean Temperatures off of Boston down to 51 (50.9 and 51.1 respectively).

    Still a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG way to go.

    In good Winters I can recall that ocean temperature being 46 on Thanksgiving Day.

    This Winter we’ll be lucky to see it 46 by December 15th. 😀 😀

        1. I’ll agree with u there that whatever reporter didn’t even have him on the ballot should lose his BBWAA rights. The same goes for the other 2 guys who didnt vote for either farrel or francona. Totally ridiculous. Still think Francona deserved it though. He did more with less. Its a reg season award, voted on before the playoffs started.

  36. At least we had a little excitment with the possibility of an east coast storm last week and that bit of snow yesterday. By and large it has been boring. The weekend looks good to get those leaves raked and bagged.

  37. Another cold front will be coming through middle of next week. Possibility of some much needed rain around next Tuesday. After a cold start tomorrow, though not as bad as today this current cold system will be on the way out with each passing day getting Warmer as high as 60 towards around Friday.

    1. I am not sure we can get the rain we truly need but any will be helpful. The Sudbury is now mud in many spots. My SIL and his dad have an office building along the Sudbury in Ashland. They built it over 30 years ago. It’s never been even close to this low. The other day a deer was walking up the middle of it and it’s usually flowing at about 6-8 feet.

    The fact that points north of us are as intensely cold as they are bodes well for New England, I think, at least several weeks down the road.

    1. Thanks Joshua. I was a bit surprised re presque isle. We went from my flowers still blooming a weeks or so ago to solid ground. I was surprised how frozen it is.

        1. I haven’t checked it out although I did like BZ. I mostly stick to Keller. Its a good group although I’m in the minority. There is one though who makes me not want to go back. He gets nasty if you don’t agree with him. I’ll check out the FB. Thanks.

              1. I generally like channel 4, but I’m afraid I don’t care for Keller.
                Keller was at our office as we had
                both Mayoral Candidates here. He was just taking it in, so I really don’t have anything to say about his appearance that day. I’m just basing it on his manyTV appearances on Channel 4 over the years. He’s a political reporter with a very clear and known bias.

                To me IF one is going to be a station’s political reporter, NOT
                a single viewer should EVER know which political party is supported by said reporter. I’m afraid it is well known which party Mr. Keller supports. I don’t care which party he supports, all I’m saying is that the political reporter should at least give the appearance of being neutral.

                1. Hmmmm I’d say he runs to the right but then his job is to get the conversation going. I don’t post there because I like Jon as much as there is a respect on that blog you don’t find on most others..or any others….there are exceptions. I like it because it forces me to learn

    Vicki, I heard from my Uncle. His Wife is ok as of Sunday, but she was heading south from Manilla, I think to assist in the efforts. She is originally from the Philippines and has been there for a while with her Church.

    Bullet points:

    The only day that comes close to 60 is Friday, IMO, and probably not everywhere.

    Saturday will be cooler because of a new high building down from the N (not Arctic in nature).

    That ridge may keep Sunday sunnier than some forecasts have.

    Best chance of rain: Monday afternoon & night. But we probably get less than many forecasts will indicate.

    Tuesday: BIG transition day.

    Wednesday: Coldest air of season-so-far. May not get above freezing interior higher elevations.

    1. I asked you a question on the Syberia snow being above and how this may or my view will impact us with cold and snow this winter. Although its not winter yet we are already seeing some cold outbreaks and even colder as you were just saying. When you have time could you please answer. Thank you.

      1. I thought I did answer back several blogs ago.

        There is a correlation between the snowcover in the part of the world and the weather in North America. I believe the impact this season will be more regarding the cold as opposed to the snow. I think we’re locked in a long term dry pattern, but also a pattern which now is able to produce frequent cold snaps interspersed with milder spells.

        1. Well I believe you were calling for dry conditions last season. Although the snow started late we had some severe snowstorms and some real close missed ones. I believe the snowcover for Syberia last October was not above like it was this October. I could be wrong but I believe when October snow in Syberia is above average we have a very decent shot at both cold and snowy conditions for that upcoming winter in the norteast. As I understand this is a really huge key in looking at the winter forecasting. I am also aware it is not the entire picture as other factors such as the cbo, enso, La Niña, El Niño and all of the teleconections coming together just right. By the hints of your post above I believe you are swaying towards dry and cold and not maybe so much snow if that is correct. I will be posting my winter thoughts on 12/1. As I have not completed all of my research I can say that for snow I will be going with above average and very cold outbreaks. Although I am not as experienced as others here I have been doing some homework. As always thank you.

    2. Looks like the GFS wants to develop a little wave on the arctic front next week, something to watch in the days to come with the cold rushing in at the same time.

  52. Hi Vicki I believe the blizzard Boston received 24.8 inches of snow and they had around 63 inches for the winter.
