Cool Air Warm Sun

12:59AM

This is that time of year that the sun is really making a difference. We have a fresh cool air mass now over southeastern New England, and the temperatures will be at least 10 degrees cooler in most areas today than they were on Tuesday. But the strong April sunshine will make the air feel warmer than it is, especially since it will be a west wind and not a widespread ocean wind (a west wind does still come off the ocean for parts of the South Coast so it will be cooler there). Some fair weather clouds will pop up from late morning into afternoon as sun hearing the ground will send some bubbles of moisture into the cold air aloft. Β The cooler northwest wind of today will shift around to the southwest and start to warm things up on Thursday, with sunshine dominating, though some high clouds may start to increase in the afternoon ahead of an approaching cold front. This front will be moving along initially and will pass through the region by early Friday morning, bringing clouds and a risk of a few rain showers. It should push just far enough to allow some partial clearing into at least areas north and west of Boston on Friday while clouds hang on to the southeast. Clouds will likely return to all areas Friday night and Saturday morning, with perhaps some wet weather, as a wave of low pressure slides along the front nearby. Then, high pressure should push in for drier weather later Saturday and Sunday. A warm front will push through the region late Sunday and open the door for a much warmer shot of air at the beginning of next week.Β  This should be accompanied by fair weather but gusty winds on Monday, but clouds and showers may arrive Tuesday as yet another cold front approaches from the west.

  1. How are the coastal temps looking? Even with the warmer temps, that breeze off the cold water is a touch nippy πŸ™‚ I did grab a tee shirt this morning to tuck in the bag to return…..probably very wishful thinking but…

      1. Sorry, I should have been more specific – I meant on the days you listed. We don’t return until Thursday night

  2. Thanks TK. I like the title. Seems to sum up the vast majority of the spring days so far.

  3. TK, do u think that chance of rain saturday morning will also happen in southern CT (casinos area)? I have a 9am tee-time down there on sat.

  4. Woke up to 39. Left for work it was already up to 43.
By the time I reached work, car thermometer was reading 46.

RAPID temperature rise so far this morning.

    Really nice out. πŸ˜€

Euro has the storm for the 17th again, but just “A bit outside”. πŸ˜†

    1. CMC and GFS both have something in the same time frame.

GFS MUCH warmer, however, CMC is very COLD.

      hmmm

  5. Thanks TK.
That storm threat you mentioned Old Salty around the 17th don’t think it will happen. Almanac predicting for that time frame major east coast storm with wet snow parts of New England and rain further south. It always seems we get the opposite of what they predict.

    1. I don’t know about that. Models are beginning to pick up on something.
It could be an OTS, but it’s looking like something. We shall see.

In addition to the Euro, CMC and GFS previously mentioned, have a look at this 0Z FIM run for the 17th:

      http://fim.noaa.gov/FIM/for_web/fim7_jet/2014040900/236/3hap_sfc_f210.png

Of course, that particular run looks too warm, however, the Euro and
the CMC depict it as VERY COLD at 850mb.

So I think the jury is out. I think we need to watch this one closely.

  6. Just spoke to one of our suppliers from Montreal and he said the SNOW
is completely GONE in the City. πŸ˜€

  7. My birthday is the next day the 18th when I turn 30. If it snows it would only be the second time in my life it snowed on my birthday. The only type of weather I have not had on my birthday is severe thunderstorms.
I have been looking back at some of the big weather events that happened here in CT that I have experienced in the first 30 years of my life. From Gloria to the tornado outbreak July 1989 Superstorm of 93 the 95-96 winter with over 100 inches of snow April Fools Storm Irene Sandy the October Noreaster in 2011 and the blizzard of 2013.

    1. Not too shabby.

I won’t do my list as it might bore people and it may be a bit lengthy.

      πŸ˜†

      1. I enjoyed reading JimmyJames list. Your would definitely not bore me, OS, as I suspect it would bring back many memories….and also remind me of some storms I had forgotten.

    1. Ok, Since you are always cordial on this blog, here goes. I’ll give it a try and it may not be exactly chronological:

Worcester Tornado, 1953 (I was living in Norwood, MA at the time. Perhaps I am misremembering, but I remember some pieces of roof shingles landing
      on my street)

Hurricane Carol, 1954 (it blew the steeple of our church, St. Catherine’s right
      over)

Hurrican Donna, 1960 (Blue Hill Observatory in Massachusetts reported gusts to over 145 mph (233 km/h) living in Millis, we missed the 1st whole week of school. Trees down ALL over the place. It was a mess.

Winter of 60-61, living in Millis at the time. three (3) 14+ inch snow storms.
      Dec. 12-13, Jan. 20, Feb 2

Winter of 68-69, living in Millis, two (2) 24+ inch snow storms. Feb 11 and
      feb. 24-26ish.

Blizzard of 78, living in Boston (JP). 36 inches (yes I know Logan received
27 inches, but we got way more, believe me)

And you have chronicled the rest.

      πŸ˜€

      1. Oh and I forgot something MAJOR. I actually witnessed
a TORNADO. It roared Eastward parallel to route 9 “just” North of it and passed over the Chestnut Hill Mall and Killed a person at the Longwood Cricket Club. I viewed it from the MASS AVE bridge over the Mass Pike. It was an awesome view. I only wish I had a camera with me. I believe it was an F1.

It was in the 70s, but I can’t remember the exact date
        or Month.

        1. I guess I should have read down and you did bring back great memories.

I seem to recall more than one hurricane in the early 50s and thought there were three storms in winter of 68-69 but then that could well have been wishful thinking back then πŸ™‚

Witnessing the Chestnut Hill tornado gave me chills. Wow.

JimmyJames – did Bob not impact you?

Oddly, with all of the weather events in my lifetime, the only time I recall being scared was with the June 1 tornado outbreak a few years ago.

          1. There was Edna and Hazel also in 1954, but it
was Carol that impacted my area the most and it
was the only one that was memorable for me.

        2. OS – I wonder if that’s the one that hit Chelmsford in 1972? I wasn’t alive yet for that, but my parents had friends whose neighbor’s house was destroyed. I remember hearing stories about it and picking out buildings that had to be rebuilt. It went from Tyngsborough to North Chelmsford to South Chelmsford. Not sure if it died out here or continued south. Here’s a link –

  8. Gorgeous day out there today . Very mild here on the south shore. Think I’m coming to the end of this bug hopefully as today is the best I’ve felt since Saturday not perfect but a heel of a lot better. Hoping to return to work tomorrow. Dr thinks maybe it was the flu. My son has a viral rash going on. His birthday is Wednesday the 16th and we had a family party planned for this Saturday but because of us being sick we felt it best to cancel. Tough call but in fairness to other family members we though it was the best thing to do. Sorry about the rant.

    1. Glad you are feeling better John but sorry you had to cancel the birthday celebration. You did the right thing though and there will be other weekends when you can all celebrate. I hope your son has a very happy birthday.

    2. John – good to see you here and so glad you are feeling better. It seemed to have taken my daughter’s girls just a week but the cough has lingered some. My totally unprofessional but experienced mother/grandmother opinion is that it is the flu.

You are wise to cancel not to mention very considerate. Good for your son to understand. I think that deserves an extra present added to his pile πŸ˜‰

  9. Thanks. Yes the party was the right call. It’s been a tough winter trying to see family with everybody so hectic and everybody was looking forward to seeing everybody this weekend . My father is having a knee replacement done on my sons birthday that’s why we were doing it Saturday because with my dad’s surgery everybody is going there own way for Easter . But we can’t risk him getting sick.

  10. Hi Vicki…. Bob didn’t have much of an impact where I was in CT which is why I didn’t list it as biggest weather events I experienced in the past 30 years.
Biggest Severe Weather Outbreak in my life is the tornado outbreak of 1989. A tree came down but thankfully fell in the yard and not near the house. The tornado started up in Northwest CT and traveled southeast coming across my area around 5pm that day. It was an F1 tornado which was not the biggest that day in CT. It was an 4 that hit Hamden, CT just before 5:30pm.
Biggest snowstorms I would say the blizzard of 2013 and the October Noreaster. The blizzard for the amount of snow that blanked CT and how big those snow banks were after the storm. For the first time in my life I saw people snow blowing their streets out just so they could get out. The October Noreaster created the biggest power outage in CT history. The damage that was left behind with so many trees down. I have never seen that much damage after a snowstorm in my life. Halloween was cancelled as a result of trees and power lines down.

    1. Thank you JJ and OS.

I had to read about the 1989 tornado outbreak in CT, JJ. I didn’t remember it and am surprised. What an awful day. I don’t know if the Halloween storm was the worst for power loss. I do remember the March 29, 1984 storm being significant but you, of course, were not quite born.

I remember Carol (#2) vividly. We were at Humarock and my dad had gone up to Boston to work saying that the storm was just in NC so no worries until he got home. I know I’ve said this before, but isn’t it amazing how little we were warned ahead of time. The ocean was coming into the house we had rented and my mom left me at the kitchen table and my brother in his high chair to go next door to call for help. My dad found someone who lived on the other side of Humarock to get us. We could see the boats all being sunk in the south river from his house. Funny but I have absolutely no recollection of weather we were able to continue our vacation but suspect we were not.

      1. The thing about the July 10, 1989 tornado outbreak was it wasn’t just CT that saw tornadoes that day. New York, New
Jersey, and Massachusetts saw tornadoes that day. To me its the benchmark for severe weather outbreaks in the
northeast and its hard to believe this year is 25 year anniversary of that outbreak.

  11. Bob had a bigger impact the further east u went toward the cape. Even in north attleboro where i was living at the time i remember big trees down and we lost power for almost 2 days. I do remember one thing about Gloria, I was very young, and they say the only things u remember that young are traumatic. A huge pine tree fell across our street and landed feet away from out living room window. The memory I have is of the sight of the tree in the yard.

  12. Pollen counts over 10 today and will continue to be for the feew days. Poplar, Juniper, Maple.

    1. Longshot, i saw u listed the pollen types once before a week or so ago and notice u have Maple. Is that from Maple trees? I haven’t even seen buds yet on my maples.

      1. You can tell when a tree is pollinating by looking for catkins hanging off the branches. Catkins are flower clusters usually with no petals. When you see them, you can bet they are pollinating. What many do not know is that while this begins in the spring, it can happen just as early as mid-winter.

        1. Very interesting. Thanks Longshot πŸ™‚ I’m lucky ive never been affected by seasonal allergies, but that doesnt mean i cant develop them

      1. Getting my wife as well.

        For me, no problems, luckily.

Hang in there, it’s sure to rain again soon.

    2. Longshot – I really appreciate your posting what is causing the allergies. I know mold is a big problem also but never know what trees are responsible.

    1. Thank you OS. So sad about the girl who was killed. I have no recollection of this either and I’m surprised as those areas are very familiar to me.

      1. It was freaky as my wife had just driven by the area a few hours before the storm struck. There were several trees down within feet of where she drove.

I was awe struck watching it swirling around. I got to see
it dissipate as it twisted around and slowly retreated back into
the wall cloud which then dissipated itself.

  13. The forsythia on the south side of my house are just showing a yellow hue. They were not, as far as I could tell, last night.

  14. SNOW PILE UPDATE!
It’s on life-support. He says you cannot even really measure it. It’s fragmented. He says it may not make it through the night. Though it may hang on just barely as it is going to get cold quickly tonight. By tomorrow though, history. We’ll just have to determine whether or not at is gone before midnight tonight. I think it will survive (barely) til the morning. So it looks like the 10th is going to be the date.

        1. I just figured out that whoever typed the dates made an error. I said 9 and not 29. Is it possible to get someone more qualified to keep track ;). And I just remembered I forgot to post the dates. I will in a fee minutes.

  15. Hey OS – I was reading the weather events you experienced above and it was quite fascinating…not boring in the least.

Just curious. Do you remember these other events as well? πŸ™‚

    1. 1944 Great Atlantic Hurricane
    2. March snowstorm(s) of 1956

    1. That 1944 Hurricane doesn’t get much mention, but from what I have read, there was quite a bit of damage in the city of Boston. I have never heard of any old timers mention it.

    2. Sorry,

I didn’t see this until now.

The 1944 hurricane was just before my time. I was born in 1947.

The snows of March 1956 I remember, most especially the last one, which
I believe came on the 1st day of Spring. After that storm I had to walk into
town for an errand for my Mom. I took a “short cut” and The snow was nearly waist deep. I was pretty tall even for a 9 year old, so it was at least 2 feet deep, probably 2 1/2 feet. There was a crapload of snow around. πŸ˜€
I was totally exhausted when I got back home.

  16. I never heard or read anything about the hurricane of 1944. The hurricane of 1938 I have heard plenty of stories about and saw the destruction it caused.
It was real interesting reading the posts of the biggest weather events some of you have experienced in your lives. I did not find them boring at all.
I would love what other people thought were the biggest weather events of their lives.
I listed mine earlier as I will be turning 30 next Friday and when I listed them as I said to myself I have experienced a lot of weather in CT so far in my life from snowstorms to a tornado outbreak and hurricane Gloria.

    1. My memory goes back as far as the 1969 Blizzard. Hurricane Donna in 1960 was a couple months or so before I was born. Not much happened as far as major storms in the 1960’s. The 1960’s had a good deal of snow. Most of those years in that decade were well above normal but nothing no one couldn’t handle.

Happy (30th) Birthday in advance, Jimmy! πŸ˜€

  18. We are on weenie patrol by DT. He posted in FB about a potential storm in the ne but saying no snow for big cities.

  19. I bought two Clematis vines, and was told to keep them indoors until it is above 40 degrees around the clock. I see tonight will be in the 30s, but the rest of the week looks warmer. What’s the consensus… OK to plant them outside Easter weekend?

    1. I defer to anyone in landscaping for this answer. πŸ™‚
If I had to guess, the last week of April should be fine.

    2. Amy, you should plant your “potted clematis” by the last week of April. Clematis thrive in the cool, moist spring soil. As long as the soil is workable – plant away! It is very important that you properly prepare the plant site for healthy, thriving, beautiful clematis! Good luck πŸ™‚
