Warmer Weekend (For Most)

7:44PM

Another day of fairly mild to warm temperatures on Friday – even warmer than I expected, with some locations hitting or exceeding 70, especially interior eastern MA to southern NH. A cold front has been working into the region from the northwest, but slowly, causing lots of clouds and some rain shower activity. This will continue through the night as a little wave of low pressure moves along the front, but also serves to pull it further to the south as it passes. This will allow somewhat cooler air to settle in through Saturday morning, along with lots of clouds, before drier air returns sunshine to the region and allows temperatures to warm up in the afternoon, except along the coast and over Cape Cod where it will be cooler due to the ocean’s influence. A warm front will cross the region eraly Sunday with some clouds and maybe a shower in parts of far northern MA and southern NH, otherwise sunshine will end up ruling Sunday along with slightly warmer air. This warm air will max out over the region Monday, with a late Spring / early Summer feel to the air thanks to a strong southwesterly flow ahead of an approaching cold front. The exceptions both Sunday and Monday will be the South Coast and Cape Cod where south to southwest winds come across somewhat cooler waters and modify the temperatures there. Once we get to the Tuesday-Thursday period of next week, a transition will take place as a cold front ambles west to east across the region Tuesday with wet weather developing as mild air hangs on. How quickly midweek clearing comes will be dependent on the speed of the front and the push of a new high pressure area from Canada, so Wednesday’s forecast is low confidence. Thursday should be dry but fairly chilly.

  1. Ocean temp is creeping up, 44 degrees off Boston, for people along the coast you just need that ocean to get to 50+, then the sea breeze isn’t as bad, few more weeks, looking nice and warm or shall I say hot the next few days, especially Monday πŸ™‚

    Thanks tk

    1. Hmm. Saw 41 on one of the weather channels tonight. 5? 7? Even off the water today, it wasn’t bad. But it was not a direct east wind. I suspect if it had been you would be very correct πŸ™‚

  2. Thanks TK. I’m shocked you’re not buying the Euro snowstorm for midweek though πŸ˜‰

    1. This will mark about the 6th time in a row that the ECMWF has gone for something that has completely not happened. Oh how the mighty has fallen. πŸ˜‰

    1. We may have to watch for a cut-off low around that time. Pattern may support it but positioning would mean everything.

      1. Thanks! We are having everyone here, so hoping that some can eat outside since everyone replied yes.

  3. does anyone on here have a Town and country (vehicle )and how do you like it. in all weather

  4. Thanks TK. Glad we are warming it up a bit for my step daughters arrival to America. Off to New York in the morning to pick them up.

    1. Hope everything goes well, how come they don’t just fly to boston? Or do they only fly to New York, must be a inconvenience to drive 3hrs, when boston is so close. Good day πŸ™‚

  5. Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

On this day in 1934 Mount Washington recorded the fastest surface wind measured in northern and western hemisphere. How many miles per hour was the recorded speed?
    A. 186
    B. 200
    C. 215
    D. 231
Answer later today. (Which everyone should get.)

    1. Thanks JJ. I watched his interview yesterday. I soooo hope he can hold on. He isn’t used to the 4 days any more. Or is it 3? I know senior plays one day less. He is amazing, isn’t he. Mac thinks this is a perfect week to have vacation. Except we have everyone here tomorrow for an early Easter so he’ll have to watch the taped version and ill hope he doesn’t see who won before

  6. It is funny how temperatures are relative. We have both changed in short sleeves. It feels like a late or early summer morning. I looked at the temp just now thinking it had to be close to 60. It is just 50. If it were summer I’d have a sweatshirt on to welcome the change to cooler weather.

  7. Beautiful morning here at Lake of Isles golf course at foxwoods. Not a cloud in the sky, where was the rain?

    BTW, the EURO BLOWS CHUNKS!!!!

    1. The above are the real deal AND we shouldn’t really go by the inner harbor
one as this will warm up more rapidly than the others as Spring moves along.

Better 40 or 41 than 37, but there is a LONG way to go before
sea breezes will not be brutal. Need the water temps well into the 50s.

    1. Exploding golf ball? I used that once. It was compressed powder. Pretty
      cool when hit.

      Sooo What was it? Curious.

  9. AND we knew this was coming sooner or later…..

KOJI UEHARA SITS OUT RED SOX WIN AFTER EXPERIENCING SHOULDER STIFFNESS

  10. Those clouds were outta here by dawn. Didn’t even have to keep them in the forecast for this morning. πŸ™‚

Warmer in response today. Some places inland will hit 70. Coast still cools with a light sea breeze this afternoon.

70+ many inland areas tomorrow. 80+ many of these areas Monday! Summer preview. And to think, parts of the region may snow early Wednesday…

    1. Seriously? OR are you jokingly referring to a previous EURO run?
      0Z run has NADA. πŸ˜€

OR do you mean a little light snow with frontal passage?

      1. Frontal passage. Cold air comes in fast at all levels and there may be enough moisture along with the cold air to result in a change to sleet and snow overnight and early Wednesday especially Boston west and north. It wouldn’t likely accumulate anywhere except maybe a coating in some car tops or grass if it came down briefly moderately. We’ve seen it plenty of times, so it would not really be a surprise, just more the contrast between Monday and that. πŸ™‚

  11. Screens going in today.
Outside water being turned on as well.
And most importantly, I am going to put away the snow shovels. πŸ˜‰

Here’s the thing, if we get accumulating snow from here on, 1 of 2 things will happen:

    1) I’ll let it melt by itself.

    2) If it’s enough to move or we have a bizarre shot of super cold air with and after it, the shovels are not that far put away that I can’t pull one out for a P.S. shovel job.

Based on current pattern, I think option 1 is more likely with any final flakes.

    1. I haven’t used my shovel in 2 months, last meaningful snow around here was back in late Feb, I actually don’t even kniw where it’s at πŸ™‚

      1. It quit a lot earlier this year than last.

March was a mostly dry month other than the big rain right at the end.

        1. Logan, at 3PM

          Temperature: 68.0 Β°F (20.0 Β°C)

          Relative Humidity: 22 %
Wind: from the West at 16.1 gusting to 21.9 MPH (14 gusting to 19 KT

  12. Thanks, TK.

Can anyone help me re: a good restaurant? Nxt. Sun., Easter Sunday happens to be our 40th wedding anniversary. Although we live in Sudbury, we wouldn’t mind traveling somewhat of a distance (not Boston) to go to a real good restaurant. Any suggestions on a restaurant that anyone has eaten at recently that is really good and moderately priced? And would it be difficult to eat out on Easter Sunday – that is – higher prices and more crowds? Thanks.

    1. If you want to drive a bit Alicante in mendon is good. Probably about the same as the sherborn inn pricewise. We like the coach grill wayland but it is pricey. And post road grill wayland but not as upscale.

  13. Answer to Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

On this day in 1934 Mount Washington recorded the fastest surface wind measured in northern and western hemisphere. How many miles per hour was the recorded speed?
    A. 186
    B. 200
    C. 215
    D. 231

    Everyone was correct, D.

  14. Old Salty and Vicki – thanks for the suggestions and good wishes. Yes, 40 yrs.! Hard to believe.

OS – I already called the Sherborn Inn and they are not taking any sit-down dinners on Easter and when I called they only had 4 or 5 p.m. left for the buffet. My husband isn’t sure he wants a buffet but by the time he decides, I’m afraid they will already be booked. It must be a good place to already be booked up. But I will try the other suggestions you and Vicki suggested.

    1. rainshine, did you try the Colonial Inn in Concord? I was a bit disappointed the last time I went, but usually they are good.

  15. Looked at a bad boy webber e310 grill today. Big bucks $700 but webber grills last. New deck and was looking at furniture.

    1. Nice, John! That’s built for some serious grilling! πŸ™‚ I’m still using my “old” Weber Charcoal grill which might classify as an antique this year! Ha πŸ˜€

      1. Yup. We will see. It’s a lot of dough but they last and all parts covered for awhile. I have a two burner webber now this one is a 3 . I still have a few more things to wrap up with the back construction project so I have time to think about it.

        1. Our weber has lasted longer than any grill. Three burners and maybe 7 years. We use it year round. I believe my niece still has my parents charcoal webber It would be 40 yrs??

  16. Luciano’s is very good, a distant relative, we take care of the turf there, little canova owns the blacking ton, another nice place, and now little little canova has a restaurant in Attleboro called conovas, beautiful night in Boston πŸ™‚

  17. Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

An okta is a measure of what?
    A. Cloud cover
    B. Rainfall
    C. Wind speed
    D. Sleet

    Answer later today. No cheating.

  18. Hey TK, How is next Saturday looking? We are having my daughters birthday party that day and will need to get these kids out of the house after they have all that cake!

    1. The signals at this point are for a progressive trough (earlier I thought it may cut off) moving through that day. As for the timing of any associated surface system – too far out to be sure. So at this point plan for the potential for unsettled weather, and then we’ll see if it ends up being a weaker, slower, or faster system as we get closer to it. Plan for the worst now. It can only get better from there, right? πŸ™‚

  19. I think we could be looking at an all day and into the evening rain event on Tuesday. I am not the best at reading models, etc., but when look at it, am I seeing rain from 1st thing in the morning til midnight?

    1. A little extra ridge bulge westward may delay the onset of rain that day until later. We’ll see. πŸ™‚

  20. Saw the grill talk above. Need a new one here. Thinking of Weber. Don’t want anything huge, just average. Don’t need any really fancy gadgets. I just want to be able to grill dogs, sausage, burgers, and the occasional chicken or steak / steak tips. Any recommendations?

    1. Ours is standard. Silver something model. Three burners and cast iron which mac likes. We have had char broil and sunbeam and one other and they did not last.

      1. Oh I should have repeated it is a weber. Mac thinks silver genesis but they prob have different names by now. No outside burner for pots. We have had those and I think they are useless. A side tray/shelf. Very basic.

  21. Thank you for all the good wishes and suggestions. We will consider them – husband has heard of the Sky Restaurant – might give them a call today.

For the trivial question, I am probably wrong but I will go with D. Prob’ly very wrong, but I have never heard measurements of sleet so I am going with that.

    1. Rain,

We used to love the SKY but have been very disappointed the last
      few times there.

One more suggestion, also in Norwood. OneBistro

1125 Boston-Providence Turnpike Road (Route 1) (South bound connected
to The Four Points by Sheraton Norwood Hotel & Conference Center)
      Norwood, MA 02062

      http://www.onebistro.com/

Very nice restaurant with excellent food.

    2. If you have 6 or less rain shine, the best seat in the restaurant is the moon booth, you can reserve it πŸ™‚

    1. It’s chilly and raw and raining here in Sudbury ‘though it looks like it wants to clear. Right now it’s hard to believe that in a few hrs. it will be sunny and warm w/a summery wind blowing!

      1. Actually, I think tomorrow will have more of a summery wind as it will be warmer.

And once we get some sunshine and really warmer weather, watch how things are going to start to blossom out fast! πŸ™‚

  22. Thanks all!

Rainshine… congrats and best of luck!

The lots of clouds was not a surprise this morning. The scope of the rain is a bit more widespread than I would have though. It may take a while to clear but it will do at least partially this afternoon.

Tomorrow will have the summer feel. Later today will give you that “preview” feeling as you’ll feel the warmer air moving in.

  23. Oh yes that fictional snowstorm the Euro had the other day for Thursday will verify as “mostly sunny with a high around 50”. πŸ˜‰

Poor Euro. Poor poor Euro. Once the King, now just the custodian.

  24. I saw note from TK that he suspects the eastern progression of the front could be slowed on Tuesday and I completely agree. I think areas inside 128 could end up with a large portion of the daylight hours more dry than wet and yes quite warm still.

  25. As the longest tenured and chief ECMWF basher, I would like to say I told you so, but really want drives me nuts is so much continued reliance by and description by forecasters as the more consistent ECMWF, when it has actually been more consistent with over amplification, northern and eastern misfires on precip bullseyes and too long of a duration precip events since August.

Its ensemble mean has been better than the OP run, but the GFS OP has been consistently superior to the ECMWF OP for 6 plus months.

    1. I admit I was a fan of ECMWF for a while, but never completely trusting it (or any model really). I always try to look for the weak points in these runs, but the ECMWF became a giant weak point after the upgrade. And the GFS has been outperforming it regularly, as you stated. Lately I have found that the best bet if you want to base your forecast on guidance, is the NAM from 3 to 36 hours – decent, and then it’s GFS out to several days. After that, experience and loosely looking at GFS in medium range, with some input from the CMC.

      1. The ECMWF has been one of my go to choices, it just seemed clear to me that there were obvious errors in its prognostications beginning last summer and forecasters were turning a blind eye to them.

I still operate on a less is more GFS/ECMWF/NAM and their ensembles as my go to model suite for guidance. I do look at the GGEM/GGEM ENS too, but not as much as I probably should.

  26. Just threw 100 plus pitches of batting practice to my two boys. Now I am sitting down to watch Masters Sunday. Opened up a Miller High Life in honor of my dad (his favorite, if not mine..). This was the one golf tournament he would sit down and watch and so would I. Hard to believe we last got to do it 22 years ago.

    1. JMA I will ask my niece to toast your dad. My brother – her dad – always drank miller high life. We will have some in his memory next weekend when she spends Easter with us. To your dad πŸ™‚

    2. Thanks for sharing the memory.

My dad is still with us but he does have a form of dementia (I know it sounds so nasty). He still has a good long term memory, but short term is basically gone. Today I took my mom out for her Sunday church run and then to the cemetery because she likes to put palms on the graves of my grandparents, aunts, and uncles that we have lost, and then a shopping run and her usual Sunday McD’s coffee and sandwich. When I got back to drop her off, she called my dad and he came out of the room saying “How did you know where to find me? I just got back from my trip to another state.” … We had to laugh just because of how it sounded, but he really did think he had been away. Once I told him it was Sunday, he was home, and it was time to enjoy coffee, he sat down and all was right with the world. πŸ™‚

      1. TK. I understand what you are describing, my grandmother had Alzheimers and she could remember being a child in Melbourne, Iowa, or a lecture as freshmen in College, but couldn’t remember that her underwear went under her pants….My grandmother, my dad’s youngest brother, and my dad all died in a 12 month span.

Anyway, enough sad stuff. Enjoy the next two days all…

Thanks Vicki for the sweet thoughts.

    1. Just a little teaser.
      A bigger taste tomorrow.
75-80 many areas where the wind is coming over land for the longest distance with even a few lower 80s inland valleys.

  27. Answer to Today’s AccuWeather Trivia Quiz.

An okta is a measure of what?
    A. Cloud cover
    B. Rainfall
    C. Wind speed
    D. Sleet

The answer is A, cloud cover.

  28. NWS says that they are going with the WPC in giving more weight to the Euro for next weekend. Really????????

      1. The funny part is they say the with the ECMWF depicting a stronger southern stream mid level trough moving through the Eastern US than the GFS. There are so many things wrong with that statement πŸ™‚

  29. today was a good example on how merrimack valley could be either warmer than other areas or much cooler
